noun 1 | someone who puts aside a personal agenda for God’s agenda. 2 | someone who understands that the key to holiness is knowing that only God is holy. 3 | someone who practices a strange math in which fulfillment means you give yourself away. 4 | someone who is willing to both know and be known.

A fourth attribute of what it means to be a saint is simply to be dedicated to Jesus. As the biblical story of Martha demonstrates, it is in our steady commitment to being in relationship with Jesus where we find that we can change hearts, lives and communities today.

PRELUDE | Thanksgiving Prayer in Tone Richard Purvis, composer | Lee Dettra, guest organist *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING For the wide sky and the blessed sun, For the salt sea and the running water, For the everlasting hills And the never-resting winds, For trees and the common grass underfoot. We thank you for our senses By which we hear the songs of birds, And see the splendor of the summer fields, And taste of the autumn fruits, And rejoice in the feel of the snow, And smell the breath of the spring. Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; And save our souls from being so blind That we pass unseeing When even the common thornbush Is aflame with your glory, O God our creator, Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Come, Ye Thankful People, Come 694 | St. Georges, Windsor *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

WITNESS STORY | Project Hope OFFERTORY | All Things Bright and Beautiful John Rutter, composer | Chancel Choir All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colors, he made their tiny wings. The purple-headed mountain, the river running by, The sunset and the morning, that brightens up the sky; The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden, he made them every one; He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell How great is God Almighty, who has made all things well.

*CLOSING HYMN | O Lord, May Church and Home Combine 695 | Land of Rest O Lord, may church and home combine to teach thy perfect way, with gentleness and love like thine, that none shall ever stray. Let all unworthy aims depart, imbue us with thy grace; within the home let every heart become thy dwelling place. Shine, Light divine; reveal thy face where darkness else might be. Grant, Love divine, in every place glad fellowship with thee. May steadfast faith and earnest prayer keep sacred vows secure; build thou a hallowed dwelling where true joy and peace endure. *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Now Thank We All our God Sigfrid Karg-Elert, composer | Lee Dettra, guest organist You’ll notice that our opening hymn uses the tune name “ST. GEORGE’S, WINDSOR.” So while this hymn is often associated with Thanksgiving services, it is actually not from the USA but from the UK. Our offertory is also English; a resetting of the words to a widely admired hymn. Those words were penned by a poet who was trying to make faith accessible to children.
