October 27, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary We receive God’s grace. What next? When we come to faith in Christ, none of us are instantly transformed into Christ-like souls. When we are made right with God, we are set apart for God’s purposes and begin a lifelong process of growing in virtue. This growth is both our work and God’s work, in the person of the Holy Spirit.

PRELUDE | Totentanz Guy Bovet, Composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist OPENING PRAYER I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O Glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Come, Thou Long-expected Jesus 196 | Hyfrydol Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Toccata in D Minor, BWV 565 J.S. Bach, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist Bachtober | Today’s prelude is by contemporary Swiss composer, Guy Bovet, who is an honorary citizen of the City of Dallas. This piece originated as a four-hand organ improvisation (!) using ostinato rhythms in a big crescendo, and as such “freedom, color, and fun should characterize performances of this music.” Listen closely for musical quotations of themes by Offenbach, Beethoven, and Wagner. We close Bachtober with Bach’s most iconic work as the postlude. Though scholars have debated its authenticity to Bach, or even authenticity as an organ piece, its popularity solidified through the orchestral transcription used in Disney’s Fantasia. The work is immediately recognizable in three notes, which is really a single note with a mordent trill.

Second Saturday Series: “Songs of Comfort and Strength” | Saturday, November 9, 4:30 p.m., Sanctuary Phillip Haworth, vocalist and Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, pianist

October 19/20-26/27 | To understand Wesleyan theology you need to understand the Wesley story. John and Charles Wesley had a standard approach to their ministry. They would enter a rural, English town square with an entourage of 20-30 friends, singing songs through the streets until people gathered. They’d end up in the town commons, and John would preach on living each day as if it was your last and your first. The first week of this series is a focus on Amazing Grace — the “last” portion of Wesley’s message and the second week is a focus on Responsible Grace — the “first” portion. 4
