September 29, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Christian works are unsustainable without a solid core. True, sustainable social holiness - loving one another - only comes through personal holiness - loving God. This comes from the regular practice of seeking after God’s heart, which forms virtue in us. Without these virtues, our lives are perishable. The work of reshaping that God does in our lives is a process of making us pure and holy, so that we will become indestructible.

OFFERTORY | To Everything a Season Taylor Davis, composer | Chancel Choir | Cindy Harder, clarinet To everything a season, to everything a time, for every purpose under heaven, to everything there is a time. A time to live and die; to sow and harvest. A time to kill and heal; to wreck and build. To cry and laugh, to mourn and dance; there is a time. To everything a season, to everything a time, for every purpose under heaven, to everything there is a time. A time to cast away; to bring together. A time to be embraced; to live alone. To find and lose; to keep and give; there is a time. To everything a season, to everything a time, for every purpose under heaven, to everything there is a time. A time to tear apart; to mend together. A time for silence, a time to speak. To love and hate; for war and peace. To live and die, to cry and laugh, to mourn and dance, a time.

*CLOSING HYMN | My Hope Is Built 368 | The Solid Rock *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Tu es Petra (“Thou Art the Rock”) Henri Mulet, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist About Today’s Music | In the prelude, Vierne honors the chiming of the hours at the Palace of Westminster. Through this piece we hear the gradual evolution of time, noting times of rest, time of momentum, and times of euphoric joy, which correlate to our own journey through the forging process. In the postlude, Mulet depicts the tumult we experience in our lives in the hands but shows the strength of God’s foundational presence in our lives with the melody in the feet.

This fall we launch our latest church-wide initiative, the Arts Foundation of St. Andrew, with the mission, “Enriching Spirituality through the Power of the Arts.” Consisting of five wings, the Arts Foundation offers opportunities in arts education, performing arts, visual arts, language arts, and community arts to support the St. Andrew mission of calling the Christian-ish to become passionate servants of Christ. Just as the blacksmithing process transforms metal through perseverance and craftsmanship, the Arts Foundation offers ways of transforming your faith through dedication and artistry.

PURIFIED Loving one another only comes through loving God, which forms virtue in us. The work of reshaping that God does in our lives is a process of making us pure and holy, so that we will become indestructible. “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” – Leonardo da Vinci

The power of words has been extolled throughout history - the pen being mightier than the sword. We know how uplifting someone’s words can be in our day, and we’re often amazed by how someone can know just the right thing to say at the right moment. The gift of language is celebrated each week as we study scripture. We read these sacred texts and allow God’s message to reshape us, to learn how to love one another as we nurture our love for God. In the Language Arts wing, the Arts Foundation promotes the power of the written and spoken word, whether weekly background studies offering insight and heightened appreciation for the scripture, or podcasts challenging and encouraging us in the struggles we face. Make your spirit indestructible and allow the gift of language to empower you. Second Saturday Series | October 12, 4:00 p.m., Sanctuary Join us the second Saturday of each month for a 30-minute recital, sponsored by the Arts Foundation of St. Andrew. This month, hear Dr. Jonathan Gregoire on the pipe organ celebrating J.S. Bach. standrewumc.org/arts
