September 22, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Melting down is what we say when everything is chaotic and collapsing, when we are overwhelmed and things fall apart. While we melt down when we can no longer carry the world’s weight on our own shoulders, a meltdown to a Christian has a second meaning, seen through the light of God’s work in our lives. When we follow Jesus, God tests us, melting down the impurities of our sin, and calls us to him.

Heaven and earth are full of thy glory; Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Holy, Holy, Holy 64 | Nicea *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Cole Reece Jernigan, son of John and Allison Jernigan We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

PASTORAL PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER MIDDLE HYMN | Open My Eyes, That I May See 454 | Open My Eyes 1. Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-20) Who are our poor? Who needs release? What blind person needs our sight? Who’ll be a witness for my Lord? Are we the ones who’ve received the Spirit of the Lord? Are we the ones committed to share good news with the poor? Are we trusted disciples of Jesus Christ? Today, by God’s grace, let us declare that we will be witnesses for our Lord. 3. Open my mouth, and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere; open my heart and let me prepare love with thy children thus to share. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my heart, illumine me, Spirit divine!

This fall we launch our latest church-wide initiative, the Arts Foundation of St. Andrew, with the mission, “Enriching Spirituality through the Power of the Arts.” Consisting of five wings, the Arts Foundation offers opportunities in arts education, performing arts, visual arts, language arts, and community arts to support the St. Andrew mission of calling the Christian-ish to become passionate servants of Christ. Just as the blacksmithing process transforms metal through perseverance and craftsmanship, the Arts Foundation offers ways of transforming your faith through dedication and artistry.

MELT DOWN “Melting down” suggests we are overwhelmed and things are falling apart, unable to carry the world’s weight on our shoulders, but our suffering puts us in good company with Jesus who suffered for us, all the way to death. “My heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary.” ― Martin Luther Every one of us struggles. As we grow and develop we find ways of easing the struggle. Music is often used to soothe our spirits in difficult times, to offer comfort and consolation in ways words fail. Music augments the worship experience each week, but so, too, the power of music can speak messages to us on its own. Through the Performing Arts wing, concerts will be offered to help support and uplift you along your spiritual journey. Come explore the concert offerings and experience the transforming power of music. standrewumc.org/arts
