Every Day Faith

August 25, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

If Jesus is truly Lord, then the implications impact our entire lives. We cannot keep faith in a box to open up and occasionally use to solve problems. Instead, we must consider our entire lives according to this truth. The risen Lord is a 24/7 reality that effects our commitments, vocations, relationships, and leisure time.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––----------------------------––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Andante con moto Wilhelm Volckmar, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP We come this summer day as Easter people. We have not encountered the risen Christ, but we see him in the lives of those transformed by grace. We have not seen Jesus face-to-face, but we must acknowledge him in the faces of everyone whose love encourages us. We have not touched the wounds from the cross, but we have been called to bring healing to the scarred of the world. *OPENING HYMN | O Blessed Spring 2076 | Gift Of Love O blessed spring, where Word and sign Embrace us into Christ the Vine: Here Christ enjoins each one to be A branch of this life-giving Tree. Through summer heat of youthful years, Uncertain faith, rebellious tears, Sustained by Christ’s infusing rain, The boughs will shout for joy again. When autumn cools and youth is cold, When limbs their heavy harvest hold, Then through us, warm, the Christ will move With gifts of beauty, wisdom, love. As winter comes, as winters must, We breathe our last, return to dust; Still held in Christ, our souls take wing And trust the promise of the spring. Christ, holy Vine, Christ, living Tree, Be praised for this blest mystery: That Word and water thus revive And join us to your Tree of Life.

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFFERTORY | The Call Z. Randall Stroope, composer | Chancel Choir Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life; Such a Way as gives us breath, Such a Truth as ends all strife, Such a Life as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength; Such a Light as shows a Feast, Such a Feast as mends in length, Such a Strength as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart; Such a Joy as none can move, Such a Love as none can part, Such a Heart as joys in love. +In this instance, catholic means universal. 3

Book of the Week Simply Jesus: A New Vision of Who He Was, What He Did, and Why He Matters | By N.T. Wright

4

Leading Bible scholar N.T. Wright summarizes 200 years of modern Biblical scholarship and models how Christians can best retell the story of Jesus today. In a style similar to C.S. Lewis’s popular works, Wright breaks down the barriers that prevent Christians from fully engaging with the story of Jesus. For believers confronting the challenge of connecting with their faith today, Wright’s Simply Jesus offers a provocative new picture of how to understand who Jesus was and how Christians should relate to him today.
