Giving Our Children Faith

August 11, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

How do you help your child develop long-term faith? Many kids from Christian families leave the church as young adults. On Back to School Sunday, we look at practical ways to help create a more “sticky faith, including what it means to teach your child to trust God, and not just obey God.

PRELUDE | Andante Largo John Stanley, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *OPENING PRAYER Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Fairest Lord Jesus 189 | St. Elizabeth Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O thou of God and man the Son, thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown. Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer who makes the woeful heart to sing. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and all the twinkling starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels heaven can boast. Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations! Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, now and forevermore be thine. *Please rise in body or spirit. 2

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFFERTORY | Offertory John Ness Beck, composer | Chancel Choir Lyrics adapted from Micah 6 With what shall I come before the Lord And bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings Shall I come before Him with yearling calves? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams With ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give Him my firstborn for my transgressions The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man; He has shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, and to love kindness And to walk humbly with your God.

+In this instance, catholic means universal. 3

WHY I GIVE The St. Andrew community shares why they give to the ministries of the church. We were originally looking for a Methodist Church to raise our daughter in Sunday School. We stayed for the choir, ourselves, the people, the pastors, the message and family feeling, and the wonderful sense of God working at St. Andrew.

HOPE IN THE MIDST OF TRAGEDY... We at St. Andrew grieve those who have suffered as a result of

the three recent tragedies in Gilroy, California, El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. It can be difficult to know how to respond or what to do. We want to provide our community with a way to respond together. Here are a variety of things you can do: Give blood. Hospitals are in constant need of blood for victims and patients of all kinds. When you give blood, you are quite literally giving life to those in need. Our next quarterly blood drive is on campus Sunday, August 18. To sign up, visit standrewumc.org/News/BloodDrive. Listen to our new Lift Podcast. Our brand new Lift Family Ministry podcast debuts this weekend, and the first episode is a perfect fit as Rev. Kim Meyers interviews Student Ministry Director Michael Agnew and licensed professional counselor Jenny Gomez, MS, LPCS, RPTS, on what to do when tragedies strike. Visit standrewumc.org/liftpodcast. Pick up our prayer card. Visit the Narthex and get a list of specific things to pray for, written by a victim of a school shooting, or visit the website at standrewumc.org/2019tragedies. Visit our website at standrewumc.org/care for more information on specific things you can do, prayers you can offer, and words you can say to others affected by these tragedies.
