Now Jericho was closed up tightly because of the Israelites. No one went out or came in.

Lift up the covenant chest. Have seven priests carry seven trumpets in front of the Lord’s chest.

The Lord said to Joshua, Look. I have given Jericho and its king into your power, along with its mighty warriors…

Go forward and circle the city.

So Joshua called the priests. He made the Lord’s chest circle the city, going around one time. They went back to the camp and stayed there overnight. Don’t shout. Don’t let your voice be heard. Don’t let a word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you, ‘Shout!’

They did this for six days. On the seventh day, they got up at dawn. They circled the city seven times. Then seventh time, the priests blew the trumpets. Then Joshua said to the people,

They shouted and the wall collapsed. The people went up and captured the city. 2

Shout, because the Lord has given you the city!

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Allegro con spirito Johan Helmich Roman, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist

*CALL TO WORSHIP Faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, “is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (11:1). It is anything but certain. Did the Israelites step out into the Red Sea, certain that they would feel dry land beneath their toes? Did the Israelite army march around the walls of Jericho, certain that they would come tumbling down? By faith, we hope and dream and make plans. By faith, we face our fears and insecurities. By faith, we till the soil of our lives and plant seeds of love. By faith, we follow where God leads. By faith, we trust that God is present in our midst. By faith, we gather in this place to worship God together. *OPENING HYMN | O Worship the King 73 | Lyons *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength; Such a Light as shows a Feast, Such a Feast as mends in length, Such a Strength as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart; Such a Joy as none can move, Such a Love as none can part, Such a Heart as joys in love.

WHY I GIVE The St. Andrew community shares why they give to the ministries of the church. When I came back to St. Andrew after college, I didn’t feel like I had a church home anymore. St. Andrew saw that need from myself and many others, and out of that came the contemporary worship service. standrewumc.org/give
