Storm Story July 21, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

Later that day, when evening came, Jesus said to them, Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake. They left the crowd and took him in the boat, just as he was. Other boats followed along.

Jesus got up and gave orders to the wind.

A furious storm came up, and waves crashed against the boat. But Jesus was in the rear of the boat, sleeping on a pillow!

Silence! Be still!

Teacher, don’t you care that we’re drowning!?

The wind settled down and there was a great calm.

Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?

Who is this? Even the wind and the seas obey him...

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Adagio Daniel Gawthrop, composer | Hentus van Rooyen, organist

*CALL TO WORSHIP When the waves rise high above our ability to see your face… Still my soul, Lord Jesus, calm the storm in me. When the howling winds and the pouring rain drown out the sound of your voice… Still my soul, Lord Jesus, calm the storm in me. When the thunder and the lightning distract us from your presence in every circumstance… Still my soul, Lord Jesus, calm the storm in me. *OPENING HYMN | Be Thou My Vision 451 | Slane *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. OPENING PRAYER Ever-present God, thank you for being here with us right now. In the chaos of our lives, we often forget that you are always with us, always seeking to bring us peace. We feel overwhelmed, as if the world around us is a heaving, crashing sea; and we are adrift in a small boat, unable to keep the waves from closing over us. Only you can bring order out of this chaos. Say the word, all-powerful God, and we know that the seas will be calmed, and we will be safe. Bring order to our lives. Calm the seas of our busyness; still the waters of our “doingness.” Let us drift on the gentle swells of your love and care. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Katelyn Lei Cocek and Allison Mary Cocek, daughters of Adam and Rachel Cocek We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. *Please rise in body or spirit.

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

OFFERTORY | Be Not Afraid Taylor Davis, composer | Chancel Choir Ensemble Be not afraid, for I have redeemed you. Be not afraid, I’ve called you by name. My love for you is everlasting, my love for you shall have no end. When you pass through the waters, I will surround you. When you pass through the floods, they will not sweep o’er. When you walk through the fire, you will not be consumed. You are my child, you are my child, you are so precious to me. You are my child, and I’ll love you always. Just hold my hand, and I’ll lead you home. When you feel lost, always remember: I am right here, just call out my name. When you pass through the waters, I will surround you. When you pass through the floods, they will not sweep o’er. When you walk through the fire, you will not be consumed. You are my child, you are my child, you are so precious to me.
