The Lions Prayer July 14, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

Darius became the new king of Babylon. Daniel was appointed his chief officer.

You should make a new law that says everyone must pray only to you.

The king’s other officers became jealous and tried to find some problem with Daniel’s work.

The next day, Daniel knelt down, prayed, and praised his God three times, just like he always did. The king’s other officers caught him praying.

2

If they disobey, they will be thrown into the lions’ den at dusk.

Now you must throw Daniel into the lion’s den.

May your God rescue you.

A single stone was brought and placed over the entrance to the pit. The king sealed it with his own ring and with those of his princes so that Daniel’s situation couldn’t be changed.

The king then went home to his palace. That night, the king could not sleep.

At sunrise, the king rushed to the lions’ den.

Long live the king! My God sent his angel, who shut the lions’ mouths.

Has your God saved you from the lions?

So Daniel returned to his palace, and King Darius ordered everyone to honor and respect God.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Allegro con brio from Organ Sonata No. 4 Felix Mendelssohn, composer | Hentus van Rooyen, organist

*CALL TO WORSHIP We come to God in worship, even when we are weighed down with our guilt. Generous God, while confessing our sin, we come to you for help, healing, and wholeness. We come to God in thankfulness, even when we are lost in our deep despair. Forgiving God, in gratitude we come to you for your unfailing love and mercy. We come to God in celebration, even when we are discouraged and cannot find our way out of our painful struggles, because we trust God’s faithfulness. Renewing and restoring God, in joyous relief, we come to you with our praises as we honor and revere you for your merciful generosity and love toward us. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Praise to the Lord, the Almighty 139 | Lobe Den Herren *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *MIDDLE HYMN | Alleluia 186 | Alleluia

OFFERTORY | First Song of Isaiah Jack Noble White, composer | Chancel Choir Ensemble Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, and God will be my Savior. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation and on that day you shall say, “Give thanks to the Lord and call upon God’s name.” Make God’s deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that the Lord is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for God has done great things and this is known in all the world. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion; ring out your joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.
