Tower Play June 23, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

Once, all people spoke the same language. When they traveled east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.

Let’s make bricks and bake them hard.

Let’s build ourselves a city and a tower that reaches Heaven.

They used bricks for stones and asphalt for mortar.

2

Let’s make a name for ourselves so that we won’t be dispersed over all the earth.

Then God came down to see the city and the tower that the humans built.

God said, There is now one people and they all have one language. This is what they have begun to do, and now all that they plan to do will be possible for them. Let’s go down and mix up their language so they won’t understand each other’s language.

Then the Lord dispersed them from there over all of the earth, and they stopped building the city.

That’s how it came to be called Babel, because God turned their language into “babble.” From there, God scattered them all over the world. 3

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Toccata in F Major, BWV 540 J.S. Bach, composer | YunJung Lee, Larry and Susan Hauser Organ Scholar

*CALL TO WORSHIP As the sun endures, and the moon glows, changing days speak of God’s glory. As the rainbow arcs through grey clouds, colors speak of God’s glory. As Earth provides sustaining food, harvest speaks of God’s glory. As people gather to praise God’s name, we sing of God’s glory. *OPENING HYMN | Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee 89 | Hymn To Joy 1 Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

3 Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, well-spring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our brother, all who live in love are thine; teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

2 All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

4 Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began; love divine is reigning o’er us, binding all within its span. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife; joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Please rise in body or spirit. 4

+In this instance, catholic means universal.
