Children of God June 16, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary In antiquity, people were known to abandon their children to die, a practice called “infant exposure”. Some cities even had specific locations set up, where others would pick up babies - including slave traders. Being a “child of God” references this tragic practice. It means that even if you aren’t a biological son or daughter, in Christ you are no longer a slave child, but a full member of God the Father’s family.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Andante Allegro from Concerto in B-flat Major G.F. Handel, composer | YunJung Lee, Larry and Susan Hauser Organ Scholar *CALL TO WORSHIP Come to God who gathers us in. We come to God who nurtures us like a father. Come to God whose arms are open and waiting. We come to God who welcomes and forgives us. Come to God who journeys with us. We come to God who sees us as we really are and loves us anyway. Come, praise our loving, nurturing God! *OPENING HYMN | O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing 57 | Azmon 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace!

5 He speaks, and listening to his voice, new life the dead receive; the mournful, broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe.

2 My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name.

6 Hear him, ye deaf; his praise, ye dumb, your loosened tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Savior come, and leap, ye lame, for joy.

3 Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; ‘tis music in the sinner’s ears, ‘tis life, and health, and peace.

7 In Christ, your head, you then shall know, shall feel your sins forgiven; anticipate your heaven below, and own that love is heaven.

4 He breaks the power of canceled sin, he sets the prisoner free; his blood can make the foulest clean; his blood availed for me. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

OPENING PRAYER Oh God, we thank you for fathers near, Fathers with strong arms, And fathers with feeble knees Present everywhere from the breakfast table to bedtime for prayers. Thank you, God, for fathers near. We thank you, O God, for fathers far away, Fathers who ache for their families, Fathers absent because of war, Or disease, or despair, Fathers who may be present and absent at the same time. Thank you, God, for fathers far away. We thank you, O God, for caring communities Where mothers fill in for fathers And fathers fill in for mothers And grandparents put on the apron and the towel. Where aunts and uncles, and those who are absolutely no kin at all Make our communities a home. Amen. Come hear her compelling musicianship in a program of beloved selections from this past year on Saturday, June 22 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a reception at 5:00 p.m. in the Narthex.

Worship Series | Through June 15/16 | The old saying “blood is thicker than water” is a misquote. The full saying is, “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” In other words, in Jesus, we redefine what we mean by blood, from shared DNA of our familial ties to the shared covenant of Christ’s blood shed for us. When we follow Jesus, we inherit a new family of fellow believers. We have a place at the table. We find that we belong. We are a child of a living and loving God. The community of faith is what church is all about. 4
