Sisters and Brothers June 9, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Respect for the family, as defined according to the patriarch, was a high value in Jesus’ day. Many Jewish interpreters believed the command to honor your father and mother to be the most important commandment in the law. Yet Jesus redefines what it meant to be a brother and sister according to obedience, not kinship. We who obey God are brothers and sisters of a new household.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Marche Héroïque Herbert Brewer, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist CALL TO WORSHIP Like the murmur of the dove’s song, Like the challenge of her flight, Like the vigor of the wind’s rush, Like the new flame’s eager might: Come, Holy Spirit, come. To the members of Christ’s body, To the branches of the vine, To the church in faith assembled, To her midst as gift and sign: Come, Holy Spirit, come. With the healing of division, With the ceaseless voice of prayer, With the power to love and witness, With the peace beyond compare: Come, Holy Spirit, come. *OPENING HYMN | As a Fire is Meant for Burning 2237 | Beach Spring As a fire is meant for burning with a bright and warming flame, so the church is meant for mission, giving glory to God’s name. Not to preach our creeds or customs, but to build a bridge of care, we join hands across the nations, finding neighbours everywhere. We are learners; we are teachers; we are pilgrims on the way. We are seekers; we are givers; we are vessels made of clay. By our gentle, loving actions, we would show that Christ is light. In a humble, listening Spirit, we would live to God’s delight. As a green bud in the springtime is the sign of life renewed, so may we be signs of oneness ’mid earth’s peoples, many hued. As a rainbow lights the heavens when a storm is past and gone, may our lives reflect the radiance of God’s new and glorious dawn.

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS REMEMBERING PENTECOST | This is the Spirit’s Entry Now 608 | Azmon This is the Spirit’s entry now: the water and the word, the cross of Jesus on your brow, the seal both felt and heard. Let water be the sacred sign that we must die each day, to rise again by hi design as followers of his way. Renewing Spirit, hear our praise for your baptismal power that washes us through all our days. Lord, cleanse again this hour.

Worship Series | Through June 15/16 | The old saying “blood is thicker than water” is a misquote. The full saying is, “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” In other words, in Jesus, we redefine what we mean by blood, from shared DNA of our familial ties to the shared covenant of Christ’s blood shed for us. When we follow Jesus, we inherit a new family of fellow believers. We have a place at the table. We find that we belong. We are a child of a living and loving God. The community of faith is what church is all about. 4
