Come

to the

Table

June 2, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Studies have shown the bonding power of gathering at a table with other people. It is the beginning point of intimacy. Just as King David invited his disabled friend’s son to sit at his table like his own son, when Christ the King invites us to the table, he is inviting us to be fully known. As sons and daughters, we don’t have to bring something to the table.

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

PRELUDE | Overture to Royal Fireworks G.F. Handel, composer | Imperial Brass and Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *OPENING HYMN | Come and Find the Quiet Center 2128 | Beach Spring Come and find the quiet center in the crowded life we lead, find the room for hope to enter, find the frame where we are freed: clear the chaos and the clutter, clear our eyes, that we can see all the things that really matter, be at peace, and simply be. Silence is a friend who claims us, cools the heat and slows the pace, God it is who speaks and names us, knows our being, touches base, making space within our thinking, lifting shades to show the sun, raising courage when we’re shrinking, finding scope for faith begun. In the Spirit let us travel, open to each other’s pain, let our loves and fears unravel, celebrate the space we gain: there’s a place for deepest dreaming, there’s a time for heart to care, in the Spirit’s lively scheming there is always room to spare! *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

(All pray in silence.) Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFFERTORY | A Song for Saint Cecilia Bradley Ellingboe, composer | Chancel Choir From harmony, from Heav’nly harmony This universal frame began: From harmony to harmony Through all the compass notes it ran, The diapason closing full in man. But oh! what art can teach What human voice can reach The sacred organ’s praise? Notes inspiring holy love, Notes that wing their Heav’nly ways To mend the choirs above. As from the pow’r of sacred lays The spheres began to move, And sung the great Creator’s praise To all the bless’d above; So when the last and dreadful hour This crumbling pageant shall devour, The trumpet shall be heard on high, The dead shall live, the living die, And music shall untune the sky.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP *CLOSING HYMN | This Is My Father’s World 144 | Terra Beata *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Toccata Craig Phillips, composer | Imperial Brass and Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist

Worship Series | June 1/2-15/16 | The old saying “blood is thicker than water” is a misquote. The full saying is, “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” In other words, in Jesus, we redefine what we mean by blood, from shared DNA of our familial ties to the shared covenant of Christ’s blood shed for us. When we follow Jesus, we inherit a new family of fellow believers. We have a place at the table. We find that we belong. We are a child of a living and loving God. The community of faith is what church is all about. 4
