Power –&– Love May 19, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

Is God all-powerful or all-loving? The presence of evil in the world would seem to nullify one or the other: either God is allpowerful but allows sin, and therefore doesn’t fully love us, or God is all-loving but lacks power to remove sin. Since it is hard to reconcile the two, we tend to minimize one at the expense of the other. How are we to resolve the tension between a God who can do anything and a God who is pure love?

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

OPENING PRAYER God of compassion and justice, hear our prayer. Christ calls all to repent, and we protest we are virtuous people. Christ calls us to costly discipleship, and we cling to the status quo, focused on our own security and well-being. Christ calls us to love you and one another and we find excuses to put off faithfulness until tomorrow. Forgive us, O God of love. By your grace, cleanse and renew us, we pray. Amen. PRELUDE | Solemn Melody Sir Henry Walford Davies, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP Gather us in, the brokenhearted and the joyful. Gather us in, the weak and the strong. Gather us in, the fearful and the brave. Gather us in, the young and the old. Gather us in, to sing of God’s works. Gather us in, to praise Jesus Christ. Gather us in, to worship and wonder. Gather us in, to know of God’s love. *OPENING HYMN | O Worship the King 73 | Lyons

O worship the King, all glorious above, O gratefully sing God’s power and God’s love; our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. O tell of God’s might, O sing of God’s grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space, whose chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is God’s path on the wings of the storm. The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old; hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail; thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Brooks Steven Puskos, son of Jeff and Jordan Puskos We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

*CLOSING HYMN | God of Love and God of Power 578 | Dix 3 All our lives belong to thee, 1 God of love and God of power, thou our final loyalty; grant us in this burning hour slaves are we whene’er we share grace to ask these gifts of thee, that devotion anywhere. daring hearts and spirits free. (Refrain) Refrain 4 God of love and God of power, God of love and God of power, make us worthy of this hour; thou hast called us for this hour. offering lives if it’s thy will, 2 We are not the first to be keeping free our spirits still. banished by our fears from thee; (Refrain) give us courage, let us hear heaven’s trumpets ringing clear. (Refrain) *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Joie et Clarté des Corps Glorieux Olivier Messiaen, composer | YunJung Lee, Larry and Susan Hauser Organ Scholar About Today’s Prelude and Postlude This weekend’s theme focuses on the dichotomy of Power and Love. In the prelude, we hear a hauntingly beautiful melody treated both lyrically (love) and then restated boldly (power). YunJung just returned from giving a winner’s recital in China having won the AGO Taiwan Organ Competition where she performed today’s postlude. Olivier Messiaen was a revolutionary 20th century Parisian composer who created his own harmonic languages, saw colors as he heard music (synesthesia), and loved notating bird song. The Joie et Clarté (Joy and Brightness) movement is from a larger suite about the Christian soul’s progression through life. This movement includes the subtitle “Then the righteous shall shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father,” beautifully depicted by this jubilant trumpet tune. Messiaen never believed his music had any connection to jazz, instead, the driving rhythm of the accompaniment draws on ancient Greek rhythms, while the middle section employs rhythms and modalities of the Far East.

“Intelligent creatures, both angels and humans, sinned – doing not His will but their own, He used their willful sin. . . as an instrument for carrying out His will. . . . For in the very fact that they acted in opposition to His will, His will concerning them was fulfilled.” “God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” — St. Augustine 4
