Faith –&– Works April 28, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary

Salvation comes through faith alone. This is a basic tenet of Christian faith and was the cornerstone of the Protestant reformation 500 years ago. Yet, as German theologian and Nazi resister Dietrich Bonhoeffer reminded us, grace without response is cheap. God’s mercy compels us to act. How are we to resolve the tension between the call to simply believe and the call to do something about it?

CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP We Gather in God’s Name

PRELUDE | Air and Variations Sigismund von Neukomm, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist *CALL TO WORSHIP This is the good news which we proclaim to you. Jesus Christ is raised from the dead! Walk in the light of his love. Live in the light of his teachings and healing mercies. Come, let us worship the One Who overcame death. Let us celebrate the triumph of our Lord. Amen. *OPENING HYMN | Easter People, Raise Your Voices 304 | Regent Square

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. OPENING PRAYER Lord of Resurrection surprises, open our hearts this day to the presence of Jesus Christ. Erase our excuses for unbelief, and exchange them for strong witness to the power of your mercy and love. Give us courage and challenge us to walk the path of discipleship, knowing that Jesus goes before us, leading and guiding our steps. In his name, we pray. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*Please rise in body or spirit. 2

+In this instance, catholic means universal.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Nolan Samuel Thiele, son of Kyle and Shelby Thiele We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

3

*CLOSING HYMN | Christ Is Risen 307 | W Zlobie Lezy 1

Christ is risen! Shout Hosanna! Celebrate this day of days. Christ is risen! Hush in wonder; all creation is amazed. In the desert all-surrounding, see, a spreading tree has grown. Healing leaves of grace abounding bring a taste of love unknown.

3

Christ is risen! Earth and heaven nevermore shall be the same. Break the bread of new creation where the world is still in pain. Tell its grim, demonic chorus: “Christ is risen! Get you gone!” God the First and Last is with us. Sing Hosanna everyone!

2 Christ is risen! Raise your spirits from the caverns of despair. Walk with gladness in the morning. See what love can do and dare. Drink the wine of resurrection, not a servant, but a friend; Jesus is our strong companion. Joy and peace shall never end. *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE | Toccata, Op. 29 Joseph Callaerts, composer | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist

CRUX Worship Series | April 27/28-May 25/26 | We tend to look for the satisfaction of conclusive answers. Yet, much of life persists as a mystery. Big questions of faith and life usually aren’t resolved with either/or arguments. For example, can Jesus be fully divine and yet fully human? How can Christians be in the world and yet not of the world? While we see problems from limited perspectives, Christ sits at the center. In every big question, don’t just reinforce the usual positions. Look for Jesus, even in the apparent contradictions. When you find the cross, you find the crux of the matter.

We shall be judged according to our works – this is why we are exhorted to do good works. The Bible assuredly knows nothing of those qualms about good works, by which we only try to excuse ourselves and justify our evil works. The Bible never draws the antithesis between faith and good works so sharply as to maintain that good works undermine faith. No, it is evil works rather than good works which hinder and destroy faith. Grace and active obedience are complementary. There is no faith without good works, and no good works apart from faith... Faith without works is not faith at all, but a simple lack of obedience to God. – Dietrich Bonhoeffer 4
