How Can I Be Saved? January 20, 2019 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary On the surface, asking the question, “are you saved?” seems simple-it is a question about the soul. But at different times, Jesus talks about four different kinds of salvation. That’s because Jesus was concerned with the whole person-heart, mind, soul and strength. Salvation is both for the future, and for right now.

PRELUDE | What a Friend We Have in Jesus Kaiser/Colvin, arrangers | Dr. Jonathan M. Gregoire, organist and Yunjung Lee, Larry and Susan Hauser Organ Scholar *CALL TO WORSHIP Now is the moment of grace. This is the hour of blessing. Today is the day of salvation. Here is the path to new life. Already joy is abounding, and love is flowing. For this is the day God is making. Let us rejoice and sing. *OPENING HYMN | O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing 57 | Azmon *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy +catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Jackson Joel Walker, son of Katie and Jess Walker We are happy to celebrate your entrance into Christ’s holy church and welcome you into this church family. With you we renew our vows to uphold the church through worshiping, connecting, serving, and giving. With God’s help, we will shape our lives to follow the example of Christ, to surround you in steadfast love, so you may grow in the faith, and be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to abundant life. SUNG RESPONSE Jesus loves me still today, walking with me on my way, wanting as a friend to give light and love to all who live. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

REMEMBERING MLK

We remember the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s conviction that “freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Therefore, let us pray for courage and determination by those who are oppressed…. We remember Martin’s warning that “a negative peace which is the absence of tension” is less than “a positive peace which is the presence of justice.” Therefore, let us pray that those who work for peace on our world may cry out first for justice…. We remember Martin’s insight that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.” Therefore, let us pray that we may see nothing in isolation, but may know ourselves bound to one another and to all people under heaven…. We remember Martin’s lament that “the modern church is often a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. It is so often the arch-supporter of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the church’s silent and often vocal sanction of things as they are.” Therefore, let us pray that neither this congregation nor any congregation of Christ’s people may be silent in the face of wrong, but that we may be disturbers of the status quo when that is God’s call to us…. We remember Martin’s hope that “dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-drenched communities and in some not-too-distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.” Therefore, in faith, let us commend ourselves and our work for justice to the goodness of almighty God. 3

The Wesleyan Way: Worship Series | January 12/13-March 2/3 | Sometimes the “rules” of Christianity can seem so complex. An 18th century English pastor named John Wesley taught that the best guide for the journey of life and faith goes beyond the important forms and rituals of religion to a place of rediscovering the joy and freedom that the earliest followers of Jesus felt. Wesley sparked a worldwide revival of Christian faith by pointing to a way of following Jesus based on a real relationship where we can find God’s grace. This series looks at eight core aspects of faith that lead to a joyful and abundant life. 5
