Letter From The Stylist Emily Baldwin

othing excites me more than the inspiration I get from culture and design. Don’t you look forward to your next trip to a new city, restaurant, or music venue? I feel this anticipation every time I get ready to head to market for the upcoming season. This season of fall fashion was no exception. After scouring New York and Los Angeles in February, I feel so confident in the trends and silhouettes for fall 2010. I am excited for you to see what the designers have developed for your fall and holiday wardrobe. Inspiration for the fall 2010 season trickled down from the couture runway shows. Geniuses such as Karl Lagerfield for Chanel debuted sharp outerwear, silk blouses, touches of fur, and evening ensembles in nude tones. Marc Jacobs focused on soft neutrals and sweet pastels. Miuccia Prada’s collection highlighted Fifties and Sixties dresses, cable knits, feminine outerwear and patent leather. Dior by John Galliano went vintage with lace detailing, fur coats, and beaded evening gowns. Ready-to-Wear collections pulled details from these creative minds to create looks and trends accessible to you. My biggest thrill was seeing contemporary fashion designers outdo themselves once again with ensembles featuring beautiful detail and polished silhouettes. Whether you’re 18 or 75, there is something to fit your lifestyle. This is the season to think outside the box, invest in quality and don’t be afraid to take a risk. Fashion is an individual expression meant to enhance your personal lifestyle. For those needing to re-invent themselves, find your most flattering silhouettes, or create a look with a personal stylist, Standard Style welcomes you. I am enthusiastic about every piece purchased for the upcoming fall season. And with such great designers and an abundance of options, this seasonal look book will hopefully inspire you to update your wardrobe with the top trends. We have placed our favorite pieces into the trends of the season: Neutrals, Ivy League Prepster, Glam, Outerwear & Layering, and Military. There is something for everyone, from individuals in need of casual daywear to those desiring elegant evening attire. As I always say, the runways are for inspiration. Standard Style is bringing these creative concepts to the streets of Kansas City and into your closet. Let us help you find your personal style and feel confident in what you wear. As Karl Lagerfeld said, “Personality begins where comparison ends.”

ENLISTED The military inspiration is the most prominent of all trends for this season.

The expected color palette includes grey, tan, black, and olive, with olive being the most popular. These natural hues set a foundation for bold layering pieces for fall wardrobes. This trend exemplifies the discipline of our military arms through orderly lines, polished silhouettes, and sharp edges. Favorite pieces to scout out and put into your closet include the military coat, the cargo pant, a combat inspired boot, black structured dresses, fitted blazers, and patterns that stick to the military story. However, stay away from the typical camouflage print. When styling this trend, one option is to introduce

10 | Standard Style Boutique

feminine aspects as an underlying tone. Pull in soft shades of pale pinks, muted golds, and even a touch of beading. Look for accessories in leather including cross body clutches, messenger bags, and jewelry in gold tones. Belts are important pieces to complete this look whether small or large. Finish this look with neutral or deep green nails. A deep shade of green was the nail color of choice for most fall runways. Darker lined eyes and glossy lips pull this look together, and top it off with polished hair either in a high bun or sleek middle part.

Making The Grade IN THE IVY LEAGUE East Coast prep school isn’t just for students anymore. This trend of modern Ivy League is being shown in

abundance this fall for women of all ages with classic statements in plaids, stripes, and lace with navy and burgundy tones taking center stage. Look for inspiration stemming from primary school days with oxford shoes, capelet coats, and cardigan sweaters. To indulge in “back to school” shopping, you can even find laptop cases and iPhone covers from Marc by Marc Jacobs. The cross body purse is key to this look, and make sure you have a weekender bag for traveling. Go more natural with makeup. A red lip tint and slightly blushed cheek work well with these jewel tones. Try deep side parts and low ponytails for your hair. To finish this look, use red polish on the nails

BARELY THERE Most popular color seen on every runway for fall? Nude.

Its light and refreshing introduction to fall’s seemingly dark hues is inspiring enough to pull in to every closet. From bra-lets to sheer silk blouses, pencil skirts to flowy dresses, chunky sweaters to fur outerwear, and even shoes & accessories, you will not be able to escape this trend. Embrace this neutral color and wear it as the staple tone back to skirts, tailored denim, black leggings, or find it in the perfect party dress. The nude color trend will also feature shades of lavender and silver. Mix and match this fresh take on fall. When wearing your neutral out on the town go for either a smoky eye or a deep rouge lip, but don’t do both. For daytime try a fresh clean face with a more bold red lip, and use a deep purple or burgundy polish to tie everything together.

Take A Hike. Blaze your trail this fall with lots of layering. Outerwear is more established than ever as a true trend. Instead of simply buying a coat or sweater for warmth, it’s now a must have statement piece. When heading outdoors, dress to impress. This trend encompasses using accessories, sweaters, vests, coats, and touches of fur to polish your look from head to toe the minute you walk out the door. The thing we love most about this trend is incorporating fall florals. Use floral printed dresses, blouses, and skirts as layering pieces. Our favorite outerwear pieces include military inspired

parkas, puffer coats, and sweaters made of luxurious materials. We love leggings and skinny jeans to finish it off. Accessorize the look with a scarf, sunglasses, and leather riding boots. Use a more neutral color palette when it comes to make-up to complete this woodsy look. Wear hair naturally or pull it into a loose braid or messy bun, and use darker shades for nails.

For special occasions this fall, go glam. These pieces stand alone

because of their color, silhouette, and materials. Bold and bright is noticeable in the season’s distinct shades of blue, purple, and red. The staple of the glam look is the use of beading and sequins on jackets, dresses, and blouses. This touch of sparkle is classic. Think sophistication when wearing this trend.

It is more vintage inspired rather than trendy. These investment pieces add an element of uniqueness and creativity to your wardrobe, but won’t over-shadow the always polished little black dress a staple yet again this season. Find the perfect pair of heels to rock this look. Pair dark smoky eyes with a nude lip. For hair try a sleek up-do and shiny black nails to add a little edge.

Letter From The Stylist Matt Baldwin

hat a great year it has been in menswear. The day of the trendy jean seems to be far in the rear-view mirror. Clean and classic seems to be relevant and here to stay for a while. What is currently happening in menswear is so fitting to the American man that it’s a part of our childhood and has a sense of familiarity. The heritage brands and heritage vibe will ultimately become a trend that we leave behind, but what I believe is truly happening right now, in principal, is a focus on buying quality American made goods. That piece will be here to stay. This is a personal passion of mine as we move forward designing a menswear collection; the principal of American-made quality goods is what guides our development and production. We will drop our first full menswear collection in the two stores on August 27, 2010. The creation of product has been a wonderful journey into the past, present and future of menswear. Exploring functionality, value, lifestyle and experience have helped our menswear section be more deliberate about the products we carry. This year is full of designers that possess these attributes as well. In The OUTDOORSMAN Red Wing boots have made their way from our grandfathers’ closet to ours. This classic look paired with unmatched quality puts these boots on the fall essentials list. Gitman Vintage shirts will continue to become a mainstay of quality with their construction and fantastic vintage deadstock fabrics. With Baldwin denim, we introduce a great black jean that offers versatile function for dress and casual wear. The Ever down jacket truly embraces layering and function. With the removable arms, it can also be worn as a great vest. FALL ACADEMY is bringing us back to the familiar sense of dressing the American man in the 1950s and ‘60s. The chino pant is a great alternative to denim. We pair it back to any shirt with a collar. The classic washed jean is also something that deserves attention. Dry denim has been a topic of discussion for the last two issues of the magazine. While we are still wearing dry denim, we now are shifting to a washed pair but within the parameters of looking like you aged it yourself. And, of course, it has to fit like it was tailored for you. The casual, navy blazer is an essential component of the modern man. And this fall 2010 is the time to pick one up. The standard men’s guide… Buy quality. Buy American. Buy from an expert. Buy for longevity. Buy something that truly fits you and your body. Wear a watch. Possess a challenging hobby. Go to an experienced barber. Buy good shoes. Wear a go-to suit. Use a skilled tailor. Buy a pair of quality American made denim. Own a classic pair of board shorts. Have your drink of choice. Have a purpose and know your own personal style.

Fall Academy. We look to the 1950s and 1960s and the birth of modernism as inspiration for the American man as he goes to college. The classic aviator. The varsity jacket. The rolled pant. We’re not joining a fraternity, but we are going to the barber to get a low fade.
