FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behavior, better health and educational achievement.

Improving our community’s health and well-being We believe that every individual should understand how to improve their lives through physical fitness and healthy food choices. Through partnerships with Stamford Hospital and Grade A Shoprite we are committed to bettering the lives of the community we serve through taking charge of their own health.

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

The YMCA has been listening and responding to Stamford’s most critical social needs for 147 years. Whether developing skills or emotional wellbeing through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policy makers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. 2 | stamfordymca.org

EVERYONE IS WELCOME We’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistance for programs or membership. We’re happy to help. We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our Annual Campaign. Contributions to our Annual Campaign enable us to offer a number of our programs and services at low or no cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable. The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyone can be a part of the Y? To donate to the Stamford Family YMCA or to get information, please contact Wendy Bennett at 203-357-7000 ext. 107 or email at wendy@stamfordymca.org

MASSAGE THERAPY

-

The Stamford Family YMCA now features therapeutic massage therapy at affordable rates. Far beyond feeling good, massage has an impressive range of documented health benefits. With a variety of methods available, a licensed and certified massage therapist not only stretches and loosens muscle and connective tissue, but also greatly improves blood flow. Sensory receptors in the skin and muscles are heightened, bringing new awareness to areas that have felt cut off by chronic tension patterns. The release of muscular tension also helps to unblock and balance the overall flow of life energy throughout the body. Packages expire one year from the date of purchase. Register for an appointment at our Membership Services Desk. For more information contact Steve Rosati at 203-257-7000 ext. 129 or steve@stamfordymca.org

AQUATICS PROGRAMS PARENT -CHILD SWIM LESSONS What’s more fun than swimming with your child? Our parentchild classes are the perfect way for your child to get moving. Work alongside our aquatics staff to help your child get comfortable in the water and to begin to learn swimming skills. Another benefit of these fun, developmentally appropriate classes? You’ll make new friends too! SHRIMP (AGES 6 - 16 MONTHS) The Shrimp class is an introduction to the aquatic environment for parents and their infants. Parents are encouraged to develop appropriate expectations for their children’s performance in the water. They learn basic aquatic safety and have a positive experience with their children that can help them grow closer. INIA (AGES 16 - 24 MONTHS) This program is for children under age 3 and their parents (or a trusted adult). The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through the water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes allow the child to have fun in the water, while the parent guides them to learn aquatic skills. PERCH (AGES 19 - 36 MONTHS) Children start moving more independently through the water under their parents’ guidance. Both parents and children will learn more about aquatic safety. In this class, the instructor begins to prepare the children to work directly with an instructor independently of a parent.

*Classes will not be held 12/23, 12/24, 12/25, 12/26 12/27, 12/28, 12/30, 12/31, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/20

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS RATIO: 1 instructor: 4 students These classes are for 3-5 year olds who are ready to learn to swim without parents in the water. With the aid and encouragement of the in-water instructor, the beginnings of the front and back crawl are perfected. Children must be comfortable in the water without a parent present. Each class builds upon the skills taught in the previous level. PIKE I (AGES 3 - 5) P This class is designed for first time swimmers. Children who have never taken group swimming classes before are urged to take this class. PIKE 1's are kids who may be nervous about lessons and the aquatic environment. They may be scared of swimming or they might be nervous about a new teacher and being in class. Either way, Pike 1 is for children with little to no experience swimming or in group classes. PIKE II (AGES 3 - 5) Pike 2 is a Beginner level preschool class for children who are not scared of the water. Pike 2 is for students who have already taken Pike 1, or have some basic skills developed already and are brave about getting in the water. If your child has never taken swim lessons before, please start with Pike 1. EEL (AGES 3 - 5) In order to move up to EEL a child must be able to swim 5 feet by themselves. EELs are working on swimming independently at least five feet on their front and back in a horizontal position. Emphasis at this level is putting face in the water, so the child should be comfortable submerging underwater. This class also concentrates on back floating independently and kicking on back while swimming. Sitting dives and diving safety are introduced. In order to move up to RAY a child must be able to swim 15 feet by themselves on both their front and back.

PRESCHOOL PRE-COMPETITIVE SWIM TEAM RATIO: 1 coach: 5 Pre-swim team for preschool aged children. Advanced preschool swimmers only. You must be approved by a coach or the aquatics director before registering for this class. To register, please contact Naki Mourtides at 203-357-7000 ext. 120 or naki@stamfordymca.org PRIVATE SWIMMING LESSONS Let our caring, experienced aquatics team of coaches and instructors support you in achieving your individual swimming goals. Private lessons target your strengths as a swimmer and allow you and your instructor to set individualized goals. Lessons are offered in 30-minute sessions, but you can decide if you want to add another 30 minutes for a longer work-out. You’re welcome to invite friends or family members to join you for a semi-private lesson. Private lessons are all about you. COMPETITIVE SWIM TEAMS STAMFORD Y AQUATIC CLUB

WHY WE’RE HERE

The Stamford Y Aquatic Club provides a USA swimming program that meets the needs of swimmers from entry level to college. We stress hard work and dedication in and outside the pool. Successful swimmers need to master essential life skills such as: time management, dedication, commitment and goal setting. SYAC promotes youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. TEAM PHILOSOPHY

SYAC will offer an individualized program with a main focus on stroke development and work with each athlete to reach his or her personal goals. We consider the athlete’s current ability, level of commitment, short term and long term goals to put together a plan that will make each of them enthusiastic, confident and successful both in and out of the water. SYAC encourages young athletes to explore other after school activities and will create a plan around these other activities to keep them progressing in a positive direction and be highly successful in the water.

GROUPS AND PROGRAM FEES SYAC has 3 group levels and has an at most 1 to 10 coach to swimmer ratio. The coaching staff is very hands on and works from both on the deck and in the water to provide the highest level of instruction to all our athletes. During the registration period the coaching staff will evaluate the athletes and decide which program fits the needs best. SYAC SWIM TEAM EVALUATIONS DATE

Your Y card now provides you free access to any facility in New England. Simply bring your facility/full privilege membership card and a photo ID with you, and you can check into any partner Y in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You can then utilize their gym, pool, fitness, and other wellness facilities, just like any other member! We simply ask that you maintain a current membership at the Y you visit most frequently.
