WHY WE’RE HERE MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

We have an extraordinary opportunity to ensure a brighter future for our community, but we must take action today, and only your support will make it possible. Strengthening the Stamford community is our cause, and we serve three crucial areas of focus to help individuals, families and communities learn, grow and thrive. The Y is for Youth Development, because we believe all kids deserve opportunities to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Through the Stamford Family Y, our children and young adults today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. The Y is for Healthy Living, improving the community’s health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.

Herbert K. Parker Board President

The Y is for Social Responsibility, giving back and providing support to allure neighbors. The Stamford Family YMCA has been listening and responding to our community’s most critical needs for almost 150 years. Whether developing life skills or emotional well-being, welcoming and connecting diverse populations or advocating for healthier communities, the Stamford Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. The Y is for the entire community and is open to everyone. Donors enable the Stamford Family YMCA, a charitable, non-profit organization in compliance with IRS code 501 (C) 3, to offer a Financial Assistance Program for those individuals and families that qualify. Now, when you think of your Y you’ll know it’s more than a place - it’s a cause. A cause, that, with your generous support, will continue to strengthen the Stamford community.

YOUTH PROGRAMS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS LEAD

Schedule and Calendar

Stamford Family YMCA’s LEAD (Leadership, Enrichment, Acceptance and Development) Academy After School Program provides homework assistance, swim lessons, health and nutrition, and recreational opportunities to children in grades K – 5. Transportation is provided by Stamford Public Schools to the Stamford Family YMCA.

LEAD Academy runs Monday – Friday, from the dismissal of school until 6 pm. The program corresponds to the Stamford Public School District calendar. During school vacations, a full-day Vacation Camp program is offered at the Y for an additional fee. Community members are also invited to participate in the camp.

Academic Support

School Closings and Snow Days

At LEAD Academy, children work with counselors based on their grade level. Counselors assist students with homework, reading, and computer and math skills. Students also have a “DEAR” (Drop Everything And Read) time throughout the week. Students bring a book of choice and read quietly during DEAR.

LEAD Academy will make up snow days, if the school calendar dictates, at the end of theyear. When school is closed due to snow or for emergency early dismissal closings, LEAD Academy will also close. During school vacations, single day and full week care is available for an additional fee.

At LEAD Academy, we work hard to help meet your child’s academic needs. We work with your child to get their homework done and provide outstanding, engaging learning experiences.

Personal Development At LEAD Academy, we foster youth development by focusing on the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Our dedicated staff lead by example and are positive role models. We promote positive friendships and foster strong bonds between our students and staff based on mutual respect. We encourage our students to volunteer in the Stamford community.

Learn to Swim with LEAD The Stamford Family YMCA is proud to offer swim lessons as part of the LEAD Academy program. Students learn how to swim from certified instructors in a supportive atmosphere.

Cost: $315/month - membership required * * Call for multi-child rates. The Stamford Family YMCA is committed to providing children with a safe, enriching environment where they can spend their after school hours. Our highly trained staff fosters positive growth by offering developmentally appropriate activities that promote social, physical, creative and cognitive growth.

LEAD Academy Students Participate in: Academic Support Physical Education Volunteerism Swim Lessons Nutritional Health

Students are grouped according to their swimming ability and have one 45-minute swim lesson per week. Instructors are trained and certified by the YMCA (YSL) to teach students to becom fortable in water, learn proper stroke technique and become strong swimmers. Our swimming academy is inspired by the YMCA Learn-to-Swim Curriculum and is specifically designed to encourage children to join our competitive swim team, the Stamford Stingrays.

YOUTH PROGRAMS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Education professionals, and high school and college students work with staff who assist with homework in all high school subjects. Students also have access to computers and technology, allowing them to complete their schoolwork and helping them become more at ease with important programs. Staff at LEAD Academy work closely with students, helping them set and achieve personal goals. Regular progress reviews ensure students are making steady progress.

Expectations Our staff at LEAD Academy promotes academic success and personal development and will work alongside students to achieve their goals. In order to get the most out of LEAD and reach their full potential, LEAD Academy high school students are expected to:   • Set and achieve personal goals

Personal Development

• Build character through weekly discussion meetings and activities

High school is a significant time of personal growth. At LEAD Academy, students are surrounded by staff and peer group support and encouraged to reach their goals. They are immersed in a diverse population of teens, all of whom have their own unique perspective.

• Perform 30 hours of volunteer service for the year

LEAD Academy supports students in becoming leaders in and out of the classroom and offers opportunities for children to become active within their communities. By offering a range of activities, we hope to guide students through high school and provide varying learning opportunities.

College and Career Training At LEAD Academy, we understand that one of the most important aspects of high school is preparing students for the future. That is why we offer guidance in preparing for and choosing a college and life and job skills workshops. We expect all our students to graduate high school and attend an institute of higher learning.

• Become responsible members of the YMCA and utilize the facilities • Avoid substance abuse • Achieve better grades • Maintain a high level of school attendance • Graduate from high school • Attend an institution of higher learning • Become productive law abiding citizens

Fitness and Nutrition At the Y, we believe that it is important for your children to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially during their high school years. With our health, nutrition, and exercise classes, we aim to teach students the importance of eating a balanced diet and staying in shape to maintain a lifetime of good health. We have a certified YMCA fitness instructor and nutritionist from Stamford Hospital who works with our children every week, helping students develop and improve their health. At the Stamford Family YMCA, we believe a happy kid is a healthy kid!

Aquatics Please note that our YMCA progressive swim classes are based on a child’s current swimming ability. At the start of each session, our instructors will evaluate your child’s skills to ensure that his/her ability matches the class description. Based on that evaluation, we may work with you to move your child to a more appropriate class or give you a credit for an appropriate class in a later session.

Swim Lessons At all levels, YMCA swim lessons provide valuable skills and components, including personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games, sports and rescue.

The YMCA swim lesson levels include: • Parent/Child: (6 to 36 Months) Includes three levels based on age: Shrimp, Inia and Perch. Because these are parent/child classes, they may often be combined with parents working on age appropriate activities. • Preschool: (3 To 5 Years) Includes four levels based on ability: Pike, Eel, Ray and Starfish. • Youth and Teen: (6 to 13 Years) Includes six levels based on ability: Polliwog, Guppy, Minnow, Fish and Flying Fish. • Adult: (14 Years and up) Includes Beginner and Intermediate levels. Babies must be at least 6 months old and able to hold their head up. The YMCA also offers a special Flounder class for young beginners (3yrs-5yrs) who still need their parents with them during lessons.

SYAC encourages young athletes to explore other after school activities and will create a plan around these activities to keep athletes progressing in a positive direction toward their goals.

September-March Swim meets occur approximately every 3-4 weeks. Summer Camp

Registration beginning January 1, 2017

Our mission is to instill the values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all of our programs. For nearly 150 years, the Stamford Family YMCA has played a vitally important role in supporting the social, emotional, and academic development of young people in the City of Stamford. Motivated by our mission to instill the values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all of our programs, we offer a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment where campers engage in activities that ensure self-discovery, team-building, and community. Children enjoy a daily schedule filled with opportunities to make memories, develop lasting friendships, explore nature, foster independence, find their voice, and express and contribute their gifts. Guided by trained counselors, campers are supported by positive role models and teachers who are committed to creating a kid-focused summer camp community. Our program complements academic programs offered in schools, ensuring that campers will be able to practice and enhance skills learned in their classrooms.

With a robust reading program and the integration of STEM skills in their daily activities, campers will apply their developing critical thinking skills in theme-based activities and field trips. While field trips include water parks, a professional baseball game, museums, and hikes, campers will appreciate how their adventures relate to their academic learning and aspirations. In addition, our campers will contribute as writers, illustrators, artists, and photographers for our camp newsletter. We invite your child to join us in 2017 for an unforgettable summer experience.
