For one week every year our Under 8’s students occupy the spotlight during the nationally recognised ‘Under 8’s Week’. During May, in schools across the nation, these excited younger students were the focus as they celebrated Under 8’s Day with special activities designed to embrace the joy of learning. Initiated by the Early Childhood Association’s (ECA), Under 8’s Week, is about acknowledging the importance of learning in the early years of a child’s life. Running for more than 60 years across Queensland, celebrations this year focused on the theme ‘Children Celebrating Outdoor Play and Learning.’

On Friday 21 May, students in Prep to Year 2 assembled at Ambiwerra for a funfilled morning of activities. The day was a wonderful opportunity for the school community to celebrate its early learners. The younger students really enjoyed the many activities on offer throughout the morning such as face painting, kite flying, an obstacle course and creating art with rocks. A highlight of the day was tree planting which was the concluding activity for the day. Representatives from the Oxley Creek Catchment Association spoke to our students about sustainability and the importance of looking after the environment. Every child was then invited to plant trees, which we will continue to care for at Ambiwerra to assist with protecting the wildlife that live there.

Our youngest St Aidan’s students also participated in a number of outdoor activities at school. Kindy girls and boys went on a ‘Bear Hunt’ in the Junior School playground and were very excited to use their handmade binoculars as they climbed, walked, skipped and jumped hunting for the bear. Their morning culminated in a special morning tea and teddy bear biscuits.
