in considering a commitment from your family to help us realize our dreams. Every gift, at every size, makes a difference. What is most important is that you are part of this historic moment.

Right before our very eyes, our new transformed JCC is taking shape. As you drive down St. Paul Avenue you can see where the new windows will be added, showcasing what will be our beautiful new building and new North Commons area. It won’t be long! I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your patience and generosity. Throughout the construction and chaos, you have demonstrated patience and loyalty, sharing your enthusiasm and excitement with us. We appreciate your suggestions and comments and will continue to work hard to make this transition as seamless as possible. The overwhelming generosity of our community brings us to an exciting moment in our Capital Campaign. We have raised over 95% of our goal,

The St. Paul JCC is the welcoming, gathering place for people of all backgrounds, ages, interests and abilities to come together for the everyday moments that keep us all connected. Thank you for being a part of our JCC family.

THE BUZZ / CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL WALDMAN This fall we launched our short video series entitled Constructive Conversation with Michael Waldman. If you haven’t seen the videos – visit our website at stpauljcc.org and click on the Capital Campaign button. Special thanks to Jim McVeety, the Katz family, Chris Tolbert, Morgan Tamsky, Drew & Christy Danisch and the Coates-Cush Family for playing along.

The St. Paul JCC is the welcoming, gathering place for people of all backgrounds, ages, interests and abilities to come together for the everyday moments that keep us all connected. For a young family, our Early Childhood Center is where our loving staff welcomes a child and fills their days with imagination and creativity. For our youth, it’s where kids can develop friendships, self-confidence, new skills and have fun all year long. For our grandparents, it’s the place to stay healthy and connected. For the person with special needs, it’s about opportunities to participate in the warmth of our community.

Located on the shores of Lake O’Brien, Camp Butwin’s 88 acres becomes the destination for community, friendship, collaboration, exploration, team building, leadership skills and fun. We welcome campers of all faiths, backgrounds, and ability levels. For more information, contact Sarah Fedorowicz Nelson.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS!

The values of Tzedakah (Charity/Justice), Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) and Gemilut Chasadim (Acts of Loving Kindness) are lived every day in our Early Childhood Center. Even our youngest learners share in hands-on opportunities that teach the values of compassion and kindness. Sometimes it may be making a card for someone who is sick, or collecting items for those less fortunate, or it may simply be learning to help a friend. So, when St. Clement’s Episcopal Church held their Fall Charity Drive, five-year-old Matthias Palmer-Denig knew just what he had to do. A recent graduate of our ECC, Matthias remembered all the lessons he had learned so he emptied his three JCC Tzedakah boxes, counted his change and decided that he wanted to donate and be part of the Drive.

KICK-OFF SUNDAY, JANUARY 28 • 1 – 3 PM

Capture the ruach (spirit) at our Camp Butwin Kick-Off Party! Come learn about all the exciting new things coming to Camp Butwin for 2018, see your camp friends and have all your questions answered in time for registration to open right after the party! We’ll make fun camp projects, eat yummy snacks and have great giveaways, including one lucky winner who will get $250 off their camp registration for 2018. Prospective families welcome!

“We spent a lot of time as a family talking about all of the places that needed help,” said Jessica, Matthias’ mom. “This was a great opportunity for him to learn about those in need and the importance of giving.”

The Butwin Boutique THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 5 – 8 PM ST. PAUL JCC LOBBY

Are you interested in a great night out with the “girls” while, at the same time, supporting Camp Butwin? Thanks to Irina Braginsky and Lena Simelgor, owners of Fashion Fruit Boutique, we have the perfect event for you. Irina and Lena, both “Butwin Moms,” are hosting a one-of-a-kind event where you can relax with friends, enjoy food and wine while treating yourself to the latest fashions with a portion of the proceeds going to support Camp Butwin. “Camp Butwin has always been one the happiest places in the world to my kids,” said Irina. “It is that magical place where children learn new experiences and lifelong friendships are formed.” Lena added, “Our kids grew up at Butwin. It helped make them who they are.” She continued, “Irina and I wanted to connect our passion for fashion with our commitment and love for Camp Butwin.”

After a lot of consideration, Matthias decided to donate to the Bums and Tums Drive, providing baby food and diapers to children in need. Matthias donated $35+ in coins – presented ceremoniously in a Tupperware container, held high above his head.

Lena and Irina chose this date to connect with International Women’s Day on March 8. Both grew up in Russia and memories of this day are filled with flowers, pampering and acknowledgement.

“This donation was so special,” added Jessica, “because he did not hesitate. We are proud of him and we thank the JCC for helping our young son develop the desire to help others in such a meaningful and thoughtful way.”

The St. Paul JCC and the Sabes JCC want to thank our generous donors and sponsors, our event co-chairs Linda Fiterman and Polly Saxon and the over 60 volunteers who made The J Event a night to remember! “Let us remember the work that this community has done to build bridges and not walls… to not only find common ground but higher ground… to make Minnesota such a special place.” – Senator Amy Klobucher

An evening with writer/artist Eli Valley and his first full-scale anthology, Diaspora Boy, provides an essential retrospective of America and Israel at a turning point. Valley’s work has been featured in The Nation, The New Republic, The Village Voice, The Nib, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, Gawker and elsewhere. His art has been labeled “ferociously repugnant” by Commentary and “hilarious” by The Comics Journal. With meticulously detailed line work and a rich satirical palette peppered with perseverating turtles, xenophobic Jedi knights, sputtering superheroes, mutating golems and zombie billionaires, Diaspora Boy unmasks the hypocrisy and horror behind the headlines. Book sale and signing to follow. Warming up the crowd for this fun event will be none other than returning favorites and local Jewish improv troupe, The Chosen Few.
