E X EC U T I V E N OT E S If you love the arts, you’re in for a treat this season: the coming months are jampacked with events for the Twin Cities Jewish Book Series, Humor Festival, and Film Series. Join us as we hear from doctors, parents, rabbis, comedians, and more! This spring we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the JCC Symphony orchestra. I promise this will be an event to not miss!

As I write this article, I realize by the time you read it we will have a new president leading our country. You may be pleased or disappointed about who this person is, what they represent, and what it means for our country and our community. My hope for our little slice of the world is that we can all remember the core values of the St. Paul JCC throughout the inevitable changes that will happen over the next four years. One of these values, Kavod: Respect for One Another, is perhaps, even more important than ever. The St. Paul JCC has always stood for inclusion of all kinds of people. Our JCC will continue to lead with a voice of unity, support, acceptance and love. Knowing our members the way I do, I have no doubt we will continue to hold true to our mission and values, no matter what changes happen around us. One of the ways we do that is by continuing to come together as a community to learn and play. As you may

Our discussion begins and ends with a person by the side of the road holding a cardboard sign with the message: “I’m homeless. Anything will help. Earl Schwartz leads this enlightening class. Register by December 27. For more information, contact Tracey Agranoff.

Maggie Newman leads this course, a lively, comprehensive overview of Jewish history, using song as medium. INTRODUCTION TO YIDDISH THURSDAYS, JANUARY 12 - MARCH 30 • 7 - 8 PM $180 • $120 MEMBER VALUE PRICE Many of us know a smattering of Yiddish words like oy vey, shlep, and gevalt, but wish we had an opportunity to learn Yiddish as a full language. Here is an opportunity to learn all that Yiddish has to offer! In this 12 week class, using conversation and elementary Yiddish texts and songs, we will learn basic reading, writing, speaking and grammar. Knowledge of Hebrew alphabet welcome but not required. Participants will need to pre-purchase the course text: Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature and Culture, Vol. 1 - by Sheva Zucker. Students study texts in pairs, arriving at their own conclusions and utilize electronic polling to communicate their answers. Register at www.myjli.com. J E W I S H H O L I D AY S

HANUKAH | DECEMBER 25 – JANUARY 1 Hanukah is a joyous and light-filled eight-day holiday that celebrates the victory led by Judah the Maccabee over the Syrian armies who ruled Israel in 165 BCE. When the Maccabees went to rededicate the Temple in Jerusalem, there was only one day’s supply of sacramental oil for the Holy Lamp. Miraculously, it lasted for eight days. The tone of this holiday is a festive one, and the only special ritual is to kindle the lights for eight days in a hanukiah, a specific menorah for this holiday. The celebration of Hanukah includes playing dreidel games and eating foods made with oil such as potato latkes and jelly doughnuts.

PASSOVER | APRIL 11 - 18 Pesach, or Passover, is a major Jewish spring festival commemorating the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. It is observed for seven days by Reform Jews and Jews living in Israel. Conservative and Orthodox Jews celebrate the holiday for eight days. The celebration includes a ritual dinner, called a Seder, which calls for the prohibition of chametz (leaven) and the eating of matzah (unleavened bread) and other symbolic foods. The traditional book used at the Seder is called the Haggadah. It tells the history of the holiday, explains the order of the Seder, and contains fables, songs, stories, rituals and prayers.

TU B’SHEVAT | FEBRUARY 11 Tu B’Shevat is also known as the “New Year for Trees” and the Israeli Arbor Day. This is the season in which the earliestblooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It also relates to the various tithes that are separated from produce grown in the Holy Land. Tu B’Shevat is celebrated by eating fruit, particularly those that are described in the Torah as being bountiful in the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. It is celebrated as an ecological awareness day and trees are planted in celebration. Ecological organizations in Israel and around the world have adopted the holiday to further environmental awareness programs.

YOM HASHOAH | APRIL 24 Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed as a day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews and five million others who perished in the Holocaust. In Israel, it is a national memorial day and public holiday.

PURIM | MARCH 12 Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people, living in Persia, were saved from the wicked tyrant Haman by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, as told in the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). Purim’s merriments include carnivals, costumes, gifts of food and reading the story in synagogue. Be sure to buy your Hamentashen at the Front Desk and keep an eye open for costumed staff and children!

YOM HAZIKARON | MAY 1 Yom Hazikaron is Israel’s official memorial day for fallen soldiers. Commemoration has also been extended to civilian victims of violence. The observance opens with a siren. The siren is heard all over the country and lasts for one minute, during which Israelis stop everything (including driving, which stops highways) and stand in silence, commemorating the fallen and showing respect. YOM HA’ATZMAUT | MAY 2 Yom Ha’atzmaut is Israel Independence Day, celebrating the formal establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. In Israel, the holiday is celebrated much like we celebrate July 4th in America. There are official ceremonies, as well as picnics, parties, and public fireworks shows.
