As we embark on our 4th year at St. James, it is a joy to be fulfilling our objective to present ambitious new plays, musical theatre and revivals of ground-breaking works, from both sides of the Atlantic. We also celebrate two West End transfers this year, with Bad Jews at the Arts Theatre and McQueen at Theatre Royal Haymarket. It is always satisfying to establish some continuity in programming, so it is a particular pleasure to welcome Pig Farm by Tony Award® winner Greg Kotis to St. James. Many of you will know that Greg co-authored Urinetown, which received its UK première at the St. James in February 2014. In late November we stage a co-production of a new and exhilarating adaption of Around the World in 80 Days by American playwright Laura Eason. Directed by Lucy Bailey (The Importance of Being Earnest, Fortune’s Fool, Gaslight) this production promises to be thrillingly inventive, celebrating the very mechanics of theatre as we journey across the globe with Fogg, Passepartout and over 50 other characters, played by a cast of eight. Looking to 2016, in our spring season we bring you absorbing and entertaining tales inspired by true stories and notable for their leading roles for women. First up is the UK premiere of US hit, The Pianist of Willesden Lane, a life affirming true tale that recounts one young girl’s journey from Vienna to London on the Kindertransport and her experience of the war years. Next we welcome the world première of Miss Atomic Bomb, a new satirical musical with a warm glow, set in Nevada in 1952. We close the season with a long overdue London revival of the world’s most performed play by a female playwright, Charlotte Keatley’s My Mother Said I Never Should. In the St. James Studio, our unique 100 capacity cabaret space, why not seek out one of our 16 events during the EFG London Jazz Festival from 13-22 November. At Christmas, The Fitzrovia Radio Hour’s Christmas Special offers a seasonal take on the classic radio plays of the 40s and 50s performed in hilarious clipped period detail with live sound effects. And in January, the Edinburgh hit Dinosaur Park (formerly Jurassic Park) roars into the Studio for three weeks. And finally RE:act, our new initiative that gives younger theatre makers an opportunity to create work in response to our main house shows continues into 2016. Four creative teams have 24 hours to write a 15 minute response piece, which is performed in the St. James Studio. We look forward to seeing you at St. James.

A powerful story of love and jealousy.

MY MOTHER SAID I NEVER SHOULD Written by CHARLOTTE KEATLEY Directed by PAUL ROBINSON

13 APRIL - 21 MAY THE MOST PERFORMED PLAY BY A FEMALE PLAYWRIGHT “I don’t know if you’ll ever love me as much as I love you but one day you’ll understand why I’ve done this to you.” Doris, born illegitimate in 1900, exchanges her budding teaching career for marriage and motherhood. When the war is over her daughter Margaret marries an American and has Jackie, who becomes an archetypal 60s rebel. When Jackie can’t face being a single mother it is decided that baby Rosie will be brought up as Margaret’s own. That’s the plan anyway. Keatley’s award-winning play is a moving exploration of the relationships between mothers and daughters and the consequences of breaking the most sacred taboo of motherhood. A play about the choices we make which determine the course of our lives and how it is never too late to change. “This is a landmark play. The theatrical equivalent of breaking the four-minute mile.” The Guardian
