After her sons passed away, Kristin returned as a House Volunteer for the West County Ronald McDonald House— empathizing with the mothers and fathers who turn to the Ronald McDonald House during one of the scariest times in their lives. She enjoys being able to help welcome the families and make them feel at home. In September, the couple adopted a baby boy named Will who helps the couple continue their lives and gives them the strength to continue to not only raise funds for HLH awareness and research, but to also make sure families receiving transplants at Cincinnati Children’s have a safe place to stay after surgery. “I think Will saved my life,” Kristin said. “We’ve lost two wonderful little boys that will be missed forever. Our mission now is to help the families who will have to deal with this horrible disease in the future.”

hen we opened our new Ronald McDonald House on September 29, I felt a tremendous sense of pride in this accomplishment for our organization. Over the past three to four years, an incredible amount of time and effort had been spent on this project by many individuals; Board Members meeting with officials from St. John’s Mercy to identify a location and secure a Dan Harbaugh, President lease, meetings with officials from Creve Coeur and Westwood to secure approval, forming a building committee for the design and construction, putting together a Capital Campaign Committee to organize and execute hundreds of solicitations to raise money, securing hundreds of thousands of dollars through in-kind donations, recruiting and training hundreds of volunteers to run the facility, moving furniture in, and organizing all the pre-opening events and the Black Tie Gala and Ribbon Cutting ceremony, all culminating on September 29th as many dignitaries and VIP’s joined us in opening the 300th Ronald McDonald House in the world. Yes, I felt a tremendous sense of pride and honor in being part of the organization and working with Board Members, donors, staff, volunteers and friends who are so dedicated to the House. Little did I know that I would encounter an even greater sense of pride nine weeks later. On December 13, a water pipe froze and burst in the third floor attic of the new House. As we entered a Ronald McDonald House Board meeting, Lisa Stiefvater informed me that we “had a problem at the new House.” Numerous times during the meeting, Lisa left to get phone updates on what was going on regarding this problem. At one point, Lisa came into the room and asked Board Member Don Kalicak from St. John’s to go out in the hallway to talk; the House was deemed unsafe for families to stay and all 15 families had to be relocated. Don and Lisa worked to get all the families placed within an hour or so. That evening, our friends from Woodard Cleaning & Restoration began the massive cleanup. Over the next couple of weeks, I saw an unbelievable team effort by staff members, volunteers, our friends at Kadean Construction and Northstar Management, and all of the subs involved working hand-in-hand to remove all the damaged items as they began putting the House back together. Within four days we were able to re-open many of the community areas and eight bedrooms. Within a month, 12 bedrooms and other living areas had been completely gutted and put back together to their original elegance. It was amazing to watch so many folks work so hard in tandem to make sure the House was rebuilt and done so at the highest quality level possible. Yes, watching everyone “work together” during such a difficult situation was indeed something that brought out an even greater sense of pride in being part of this organization. Thanks to all of our friends for always being there and jumping in and helping out whenever the need arises.

Don't Miss the 11th Annual Kids and Clays Tournament

onald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis will host the 11th Annual Kids and Clays Tournament, sponsored by Marcone Supply, on August 19 & 20. The dinner auction will be held on Friday evening at the Edward Jones Atrium, featuring many exciting live and silent auction items. The next morning, the tournament begins at spectacular Nilo Farms in Alton, IL with three flights and 100 targets

per participant. RMHC offers 4 classes, with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each class, as well as a subjunior division (under age 14), junior division (ages 14-17), ladies division and corporate team challenge. Breakfast, lunch, and beverages will be served throughout the day with an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the event. Nilo Farms is a beautiful facility of 650 acres of rolling hills including oak-hickory woodlands and sub-marginal agricultural land.

House Volunteers Volunteers are needed during the week at our Park Avenue and West Pine House to help welcome families, give tours, and support our House Managers. Delivery Volunteers are needed to make weekly runs to distribute and pick-up supplies.

Snack Donations Needed for Three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms

ur three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are in need of individually wrapped, non-perishable snack donations, including crackers, cookies, microwavable single-serve meals, breakfast bars, or other light meal items. These rooms provide snacks, Internet access, television,

showers, and laundry facilities to St. Louis and out-of-town families with a seriously-ill child being treated at Mercy Children's Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital, and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. Many times, families do not leave the hospital for days and come into the Family Room to relax while grabbing something quick to eat. In 2010, more than 5,300 new families used one of our Family Rooms. Over the past 25 years, Coldwell Banker Gundaker and its associates have donated $1.5 million to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis through charity auctions as well as company and local office events. This phenomenal dedication has helped provide a loving and supportive home for families of seriously-ill children traveling to St. Louis for medical treatment. southwest airlines Presents $207,000 to Ronald Mcdonald House Charities of Metro st. Louis

ver 25 years ago, Southwest Airlines pilot Dick East and his family experienced the Ronald McDonald House firsthand. Following the loss of his daughter to Leukemia, East began volunteering by cooking meals at Houses in cities to which he flew. His dedication to the Ronald McDonald House quickly spread throughout the Southwest family as other employees also began volunteering their time and services. Not long after, several Dallas businessmen, friends and patrons staged a charity golf tournament to raise money for a popular Dallas club owner, Joe Miller, who was battling cancer. When Miller donated excess funds to the Dallas Ronald McDonald House, Southwest followed his lead. Thus the LUV Classic was born - a charity golf tournament and party that has donated over $12 million for Ronald McDonald Houses across the country. This year, Southwest Airlines chose to donate tournament proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis, to help support the completion of the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and the 300th House in the world. Southwest Airlines donated $207,000 on behalf of the 25th Annual LUV Classic to help provide all the comforts of home to the families in St. Louis’ newest Ronald McDonald House. The donation helped build the recreation room in the basement of the new House, complete with a Southwest Airlines section with actual Southwest Airlines seats and a wing of a plane. “We are so thankful to Southwest Airlines for their generous gift to our newest 'home-away-from-home'. or going above and beyond to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis, RMHC awarded Clayton-based Moneta Group LLC with the 2010 “Heart and Sole Award.” The “Heart and Sole Award” was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker in recognition of a more than 20-year commitment by the company’s nearly 3,000 agents to RMHC. Each year, RMHC honors a new company that emulates Coldwell Banker’s long-term commitment and generosity. Moneta Principal Donald Kukla recently accepted the award on behalf of the company. “We are honored to be recognized by an organization that does so much to improve the lives of families in their time of need. My colleagues and I share a commitment to giving back to the community that supports us, and partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities in an extension of that commitment,” Kukla said. Most recently Moneta served as a Gold Pedal Sponsor for the 1st Annual RMHC Ride and formed a ride team, raising more than $20,000 for RMHC. This year, the company renewed its partnership with the Bike Ride as a Gold Pedal sponsor. Moneta also sponsored the Gala of Gratitude, a black tie affair to say thank you to major donors helping make the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and the 300th House a reality. Additionally, the company also made a significant donation to the Capital Campaign to fund the new House. In addition to sponsoring events, Moneta employees also volunteer to cook dinner for Ronald McDonald House families. After an exhausting day at the hospital, RMHC family dinner groups, like

Ameren Missouri Presents $250,000 Check to Support Third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House

n January 10, Ameren Missouri presented a $250,000 check to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis to support the recently opened third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House. The kitchen of this new 18,000-square foot House is named in honor of Ameren’s generous gift. To commemorate Ameren Missouri having the naming rights to the new kitchen, Ameren Missouri employees served lunch for families staying at the House after the check presentation. “We are so thankful to Ameren Missouri for their generous lead gift and their commitment to our families. This gift will ensure we can help more families have access to the quality health care their children need and help them focus on what is most important – facing the weight of an illness together, as a family,” said Dan Harbaugh, president of RMHC of Metro St. Louis. Ameren Missouri employees recently started a quarterly corporate dinner group by organizing volunteers to cook dinner at the new Ronald McDonald House for the 20 families who call this new house “home” while their child receives treatment at a West County hospital. onald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis is proud to welcome Larry Carrico, CEO of SKC Enterprises, Inc., as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. Nearly ten years ago, Carrico began by donating televisions from his Rent One stores to each of the eight long-term RMHC apartments. Carrico also implemented an extremely successful employee giving campaign for RMHC, raising more than $40,000 and hosts several fundraisers to help RMHC ranging from golf outings to softball tournaments. Carrico served as the PR and Marketing Committee Chair for five years and also serves on the Development and Executive committees. Most recently, Carrico served on the Capital Campaign committee to help raise funds for the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and the 300th House in the world. Additionally, Carrico made a major gift to the Capital Campaign for naming rights of a family bedroom at the new House, located in West St. Louis County. Carrico is replacing Phil Brown, outgoing Board Chairman. During his time as Board Chairman, Brown helped guide RMHC of Metro St. Louis through a $7 million Capital Campaign for the construction of the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House. Brown started volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House 11 years ago as the first Chairman of the Kids and Clays

HEART BITS On February 7, Dillard’s presented RMHC with a check for $32,000 from the sale of their Southern Living Christmas Cookbook. For the third time, Dillard's offered a special edition of the cookbook exclusively to benefit RMHC. This "must-have" cookbook was available for only $10. At birth, Nate Pehle, from Jackson, Mo., was very sick, and his family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House while he received treatment. To give back, Nate and his family asked for wish list donations in lieu of birthday presents.

Pre-school students from United Services held a wish list drive for RMHC and presented the items to Ronald McDonald in honor of their classmate, Leah. Leah’ s parents used a Ronald McDonald Family Room when she was born prematurely four years ago, weighing one pound, seven ounces.

Employees from Rivet Marketing donated their time to repaint the laundry room at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House. Thanks to their efforts, the walls are now covered in a colorful seascape!

Keira Eppert collected books in lieu of presents for her fifth birthday celebration at school. It was “PJ Day”, which explains her comfortable-looking attire!

Elayna’s family used the Ronald McDonald House in Seattle during a heart surgery. Elayna, who just turned five, requested that her birthday party guests donate money to the Ronald McDonald House instead of bringing her gifts, raising more than $150.

Aesculap employees Ronnie Horn, Rita Retter, Melissa Spiller, and Jim Rickelfs presented a $1,665 check raised from multiple events, including a Wii tournament.

The family of Will Cruikshank, a patient at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, surprised him with an 11th birthday party in the Family Room on November 14. They decorated and even had a delicious ice cream cake they shared with the volunteers and other families. Vicki Pickle once again donated items for the McGift Shoppe in memory of her parents who were long-time supporters of RMHC before they passed away.

Dynamic Edge Dance Center taught dance lessons and accepted RMHC wish list items for admission. They also hosted a sleepover where the students made blankets for RMHC families. Lisa Sabath and Sarah Penberth dropped off the items.

Larry Sisco and Jasper Mangiore from St. Louis Lodge surprised the Ronald McDonald House with a generous check for $10,000. Larry and Jasper, thank you for your generosity!

An enthusiastic group of first graders from Little Flower School collected many much-needed items for our Family Room Program. They also made a $460 donation to the Family Rooms.
