Morgan’s story: Double-lung and liver transplant give child with Cystic Fibrosis a second chance

M

organ couldn’t get her new lungs until her new liver arrived, too. After a 15-year battle with Cystic Fibrosis, prolonged hospital stays, and countless daily breathing treatments, Morgan simply couldn’t keep her oxygen levels up high enough on her own. Shortly after finding out Morgan needed a lung transplant, her liver began to fail, too. Rounds of daily Cystic Fibrosis drugs caused Morgan’s liver to stop working properly and doctors told the family Morgan would need not only a double-lung transplant, but also a liver transplant. To make matters more complicated, doctors needed to do the lung and liver transplant at the same time. A Long Wait to a New Beginning Morgan bounces around her Ronald McDonald House apartment excited about the news. She finally gets to go home

Spring/Summer 2010 to Decatur, Mississippi, because her most recent pulmonary function tests showed her new lungs worked properly. From the smile on her face and the bounce in her step, most would be unable to tell that just three months ago, Morgan underwent two major transplants simultaneously. On November 12, Morgan received a phone call that her new lungs and liver had arrived at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. For the last six months, Morgan and her parents have called a Ronald McDonald House extended-stay apartment “home” while they waited for the call that both her lungs and liver were ready. “It’s so nice to have a place to come to after the hospital,” Tracy said. “It feels so much like home and when our son comes up, our whole family can stay in the apartment to be close together.”

Morgan’s father Greg and Morgan

At 6:45 a.m. doctors brought Morgan into surgery for her lung transplant. At 8:30 p.m. doctors replaced her liver, and at 12:30 a.m., doctors finished a procedure they had only done five times prior. After battling Cystic Fibrosis for 15 years, Morgan can now run, jump, climb stairs—all things she was unable to do before her surgery. However, Morgan became diabetic post transplant—a possible side effect of the anti-rejection medications. Morgan now gives herself daily insulin shots.

the

R

ecently I received an e-mail from the mother of a family who stayed at the St. Louis Ronald McDonald House numerous times in 1999, 2000, and 2001. The family was using the House because their five-year-old daughter, Brianna, had a brain tumor and was being Dan Harbaugh treated at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Brianna was a year younger than my daughter, Libby, at the time. Libby liked coming to work with me on Saturdays to meet and play with the kids staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Over a two year period, Libby and Brianna became very good friends. Libby would always come down to the House to visit and play with Brianna when they were here. Libby and I would also go visit Brianna when she was in Cardinal Glennon, as well. Libby would climb up into bed with Brianna and they would play dolls, Uno, or other games. I will never forget the night I received the phone call at home letting me know that Brianna had lost her battle. It again “tested” my desire to continue to “work” in a place where I would be exposed to such sadness at times. Brianna’s mother e-mailed me to say hello. The nine year anniversary of Brianna’s death was coming up and it made her think of all the wonderful people at the House whom she had met when she was here. She spoke of the volunteers who were so good to her, and she asked about my daughter, who is now 17. More than anything, she wanted to express her appreciation for all the Ronald McDonald House did for her and her family during such a challenging and difficult time. We are only able to help families like this because of you. So, whether you are a donor, volunteer, family dinner participant, tab top collector, or maybe even someone reading this newsletter for the first time, thank you! Thank you for helping us to provide comfort, care and a “home-away-from-home” for families. We value your friendship!

OURMISSION

To provide a “home-away-from-home” for families of seriously-ill children and support to organizations that serve the needs of children.

Construction and Capital Campaign Underway on Third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and 300th in the World With the footings and foundation complete, we anticipate construction accelerating as the weather improves. We have incredible support from our donors and their in-kind donations continue to support the construction of this house. Additionally, as you may know, RMHC is in the midst of a $7 million Capital Campaign. To date, over $5.8 million has been pledged, which includes a $900,000 challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation that we will receive if we hit our goal. We still have many naming rights available. If you would like more information on the Capital Campaign, please call Dan Harbaugh at 314.932.4113.

C

onstruction is well underway on the third Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis and the 300th House in the world. The newest Ronald McDonald House will be located on the campus of St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital and will be a 20 bedroom, 3-story house, encompassing 18,188 square feet. The first floor will consist of community space (kitchen, living room, dining room, and play areas) and office space. There will also be the House Parent apartment and an overnight staff sleep room. Additionally, the second floor will have 11 bedrooms, each with a private bath and a small lounge area, and the third floor will have 6 bedrooms, each with a private bath. The basement will include storage, a laundry room, and a large recreational area.

Morgan’s Story: Child Recovered at RMH After Two Transplants (Cont. from Cover) Shortly after Tracy and Greg found out Morgan had Cystic Fibrosis, they also found out their son Tyler had four brain tumors. While the radiation and chemotherapy put Tyler’s cancer in remission, he has lost some of the use of his facial muscles, making it hard to smile and talk. While the rest of the family awaited Morgan’s transplant, Tyler stayed with his aunt and uncle so he could remain in school. Tracy stayed with Morgan while Greg went back home to continue to work. During their stay at the Ronald McDonald House, the family got to go to several St. Louis Blues hockey games because of a generous donation from Blues’ player Alex Steen. Each game, Steen donated 4 tickets for a family to use. The family

also got to go see Mary Poppins and received tickets to other events because of generous RMHC ticket donors. On Friday, February 12, the family finally traveled home to Mississippi, anxious to live under the same roof once again. Nearly everything will return to normal, except Morgan will not be able to go back to school right away because of her suppressed immune system. The family will make the eight and a half hour drive from Mississippi to St. Louis Children’s Hospital every three months for the first year after they go home and every six months after she is two years post-operation. Morgan will take anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life, but the family is relieved that she will no longer have to do the breathing

treatments. While the family is excited to go home, Morgan said she will miss the Ronald McDonald House in a lot of ways. “I love meeting great people here,” Morgan said, thinking back to watching movies and hanging out with the other children who awaited transplants. “You form a family here.”

These rooms provide snacks, Internet access, television, showers, and laundry facilities at no charge to St. Louis and out-of-town families with a seriously-ill child being treated at local hospitals. Many times, families do not leave the hospital for days and come into the Family Room to relax while grabbing something quick to eat. In 2009, more than 3,600 new families used one of our Family Rooms. If you would like to help or know someone or a company who would like to help, please contact Judy Schuler at 314.773.1100, ext. 1433, or e-mail jschuler@rmhcstl.com.

Almost Home for the Holidays Thank you to everyone who held Wish List Drives or donated items to make our 2009 McGift Shoppe a huge success. Because of you, families shopped free-of-charge, and their holiday season was much brighter, even though they were away from home! Here are a few of the groups that helped spread holiday cheer to our families:

Santa and one of his elves visited the Park Avenue House on Christmas Eve to bring Build-A-Bears to each of the children staying at the House with the help of the John C. Hill Family Dinner Group.

Vicki Pickle, Lisa Triefenbach, Katie Underhill, and Ally Favre from St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles Magazine collected items for our McGift Shoppe.

Two-year-old’s Katie Linscott, Aurora Alba, Charlotte Whiting did chores around the house to earn nickels and dimes to save up enough to purchase a tea set for our McGift Shoppe. Then, the girls and their mothers came and caroled for our families.

The Schwartz family hosted a holiday party and asked guests to bring gift and toy donations for RMHC.

PlannedGiving The controversial practice of charitable gift formulas in estate planning was recently upheld by the Tax Courts. An IRS appeal on the matter is possible, but the recent outline provided by the Tax Court is being used to structure formula clauses for gifts today. How does a charitable gift formula work? When transferring assets (commonly LLC or FLP interests) to heirs planners often recommend the simultaneous gift of the same asset to a charity. Using a charitable gift formula means that all gifts are calculated using a formula to adjust the amount going to charity without changing the fixed value delivered to heirs should there be a change in the appraised value of the transferred asset in the future. Because the value of gifts can be challenged by the IRS and expose the taxpayer to more gift taxes down the road, planners created this solution to provide clients with some certainty. In essence, this technique keeps the value of gifts to family members constant and the excess/shortfall upon revaluation is allocated to charity. This can result in a variable charitable deduction

2009 Coldwell Banker Gundaker Heart & Sole Award

Gateway Distribution Honored for its Support

Co-Owners of Gateway Distribution Bill Dowling and Ali Seyedi accepted the award on behalf of Gateway’s 160 employees.

In 2005 Ronald McDonald House Charities created the Heart and Sole Award in honor of Coldwell Banker Gundaker. This award was created not only to recognize Coldwell Banker Gundaker and their 3,000-plus agents for over 20 years of support of RMHC, but to then, on an annual basis, recognize a local company who emulates Coldwell Banker’s long-term commitment and generosity to RMHC. For its support, RMHC presented Gateway Distribution with the 2009 Heart and Sole Award.

Since the Ronald McDonald House opened in 1981, every month a truck driven by a Gateway Distribution employee, formerly PFD Supply, pulls up to the House and delivers a one-month supply of coffee, sugar, creamer, paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, and cleaning supplies. Because of Gateway’s dedication, RMHC proudly presented the company with the 2009 Heart and Sole Award. “The Ronald McDonald House has been important to us since the first House in St. Louis opened in 1981. Winning this award is special to all of our employees because we know that offering families a place to stay together during a child’s illness helps in the healing process and lessens the burden on the family. It’s our way of giving back to our community and to share our blessings,” Dowling said. Gateway Distribution also supports nearly every single RMHC special event

and fundraiser by forming a team for the golf tournaments, purchasing a table at a dinner auction, and for several years, by hosting a Tiki Hut with extra fun for the golfers at the McDonald’s Scramble for Charity. Several years ago, in addition to collecting tab tops at the company, Gateway Distribution also took on picking up all the tab tops collected at McDonald’s and hauls the tabs to Cash’s Scrap Metal for recycling. Most recently, Dowling joined the Capital Campaign Committee for the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and the 300th in the world to be open in September 2010. Dowling and Seyedi made a major gift pledge to the Capital Campaign on behalf of Gateway as well. “Gateway Distribution has been a tremendous friend to the Ronald McDonald House since we opened in 1981, and we are so very proud to recognize them with the 2009 Heart and Sole award,” RMHC President Dan Harbaugh said.

Various Companies Go the Extra Mile for RMHC by Participating in Time, Talent, Treasure Campaign RMHC recently launched a new program called the Time, Talent, Treasure campaign to help educate corporations about all the fun, easy ways to help our families. In 2009, RMHC Board Member Larry Carrico helped create the program after he helped grow the program at his own company, Rent-One in Marion, IL. Through payroll deduction and his company match, Larry’s employees donate more than $10,000 per year to RMHC. Several other companies have lent a hand to RMHC after learning about the easy ways to get involved. Imagery Marketing signed up for payroll deduction and donated their talent by redesigning the RMHC holiday card. “RMHC continues to be our primary partner since Imagery wholeheartedly supports their mission of helping children,” Chris Ruzicka, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Imagery Marketing, and RMHC committee

15

member said. “Their committed staff and the numerous opportunities to provide time and talent, not just donations, is ideal for our marketing firm’s employees.” Argent Capital Management employees also signed up for payroll deduction and have also hosted numerous snack drives for our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. One of Argent’s employees, Yvonna Keuss, has helped organize Argent’s Time, Talent, Treasure efforts and knows first-hand the importance of the Family Room. “My niece delivered a baby prematurely in Poplar Bluff and the baby was then taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital,” Keuss said. “She could not say enough about how wonderful the Family Room was on all levels. She was so thankful to have the room there to take a break or a shower.” Larry Glascott, CFO of Centric Health Resources and RMHC Board Member, and Pam Schneider, Vice President of Human Resources for Centric, also arranged for a Time, Talent, Treasure presenter to tell

www.rmhcstl.com

Centric’s employees about RMHC and the easy ways to get involved. After the presentation, Centric hosted a wish list drive to collect items our families need every day like toiletries and cleaning items. The company also started collecting tab tops and more than 15 people showed interest in volunteering for RMHC. Midwest Valve also began collecting snacks for RMHC families after the Time, Talent, Treasure presentation. Many Midwest employees donated their talent by joining committees and Midwest’s President and Owner, Brad Seabaugh, chairs the RMHC Kids and Clays tournament and serves on the new RMHC Ride committee. Dan Erman also joined the Ride committee and Darin Schlegel serves as the Raffle Chair for the Clays tournament. If you would be interested in your company finding out all the easy, fun ways to help RMHC in a 20-minute Time, Talent, Treasure presentation, please call Stephanie Stangl at 314.773.1100, ext. 1432.
