A
s a child, summers in Texas meant swimming, bike riding and backyard barbecuing. Little did I realize the sun damage I was receiving as I paraded around with my gorgeous tan. No longer a sun worshipper, I’ve long since turned to self-tanning products to simulate that beautiful bronze glow of my youth. Thankfully, these products don’t leave my hands—and other body parts—an orange that rivals the University of Texas orange! There are products you can add to your body lotion and some that even work in the shower— go figure. If you’re curious, “You Glow Girl” (page 73) reviews three self-tanning products. With summer bronzing addressed, we decided to feed the beauty foodies in all of us and discovered a few beauty products that contain a food as an ingredient, see “PRIME Finds” (page 72). My inner child had no idea getting fruits and veggies on my face would be such a good thing—rather than eat your fruits and veggies, it’s more like apply your fruits and veggies. For culinary lovers, this is your issue. From the best bucket-list-worthy places for cooking classes in “Cooked to Perfection” (page 18) to bragging rights for peach desserts in “Just Peachy” (page 46), you’re sure to find inspiration, as well as a few hunger pains. Then, fire up your backyard grills with tips and suggestions from a few of Texas’ culinary who’s who in “Texas Chefs Reveal” (page 33)—you might be surprised with a few of their answers. With the Texas culinary scene embracing the year of the skewer, our annual “Topping the Texas Grill” (page 23) showcases a few unexpected dishes for skewering inspiration. Pair these dishes with one of the most uniquely garnished cocktails we’ve covered, see “Bloody Maria” (page 14). All I can say is, it’s true, things are bigger in Texas. And, if a Fourth of July celebration is on your radar, let your “Patriotic Palette” (pages 12, 56) shine through with picks from our style experts—our friends at Kavador showed us that there is always a place for vintage jewelry at any celebration, including Independence Day. GINGER PEACHES AND CREAM INGREDIENTS 1 shot of bourbon 1/2 shot of peach schnapps ginger beer bourbon-bruleed Dandies marshmallow, for garnish DIRECTIONS Fill a glass with ice. Add bourbon and peach schnapps. Top the rest of the glass with ginger beer and stir. Garnish with a bruleed Dandies marshmallow. * To make bruleed Dandies marshmallow: Place a marshmallow on a skewer, dip in bourbon and roll in sugar. Using a kitchen torch or flame from a gas stove, toast the marshmallow until the sugar turns into a burnt crust. (recipe provided by Dandies Marshmallows)
