LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear SPSG Community, The 2013–14 academic year was remarkable for St. Paul’s School for Girls. There are, of course, many measures of the school’s health and success, but none as important as the achievement of our girls. In this issue of Spiritus we tell their stories and those of the people—SPSG faculty, staff, and alumnae—who are making a difference in our students’ lives. Our efforts to strengthen this already model educational experience accelerated in 2014. As we reported to you this summer, we and St. Paul’s School have begun implementing a critical component of our joint strategic plan: improved coordination of our 11th and 12th grade academic programs. The committee of independent school leaders who visited our two campuses in April praised SPSG’s Advanced Placement program. And the committee gave us outstanding guidance for better aligning the schools’ schedules and learning technologies. Those recommendations have already been acted upon, an indication of our commitment to the plan. In the coming months, SPSG and SPS will work together to create expanded academic options for our 11th and 12th graders—and to address the joint strategic plan’s four broader initiatives: • to seek opportunities to promote educational excellence; • to identify ways to expand and integrate student life experiences; • to enhance the operational efficiency of both schools; and • to initiate co-marketing efforts to increase enrollment and retention. This is an exciting moment for our school, and the opportunities that lie ahead would not be within reach if not for our considerable strengths on other fronts. In this annual report, we acknowledge giving to SPSG—and recognize those who support the school through their philanthropy. There are several highlights within this report : • Annual giving increased by 18 percent over the previous year. • Alumnae participation in the Annual Fund increased from 21 percent to 28 percent. • Annual Fund leadership gifts—those of $1,000 and above—increased by more than 57 percent. • Gator Day FY14, our online social media fundraising effort, set a record, raising over $70,000, reflecting an 89 percent increase in contributions and a 154 percent increase in number of alumnae donors. As gratifying as these numbers are, they are made all the more compelling by the understanding that these gifts represent a vote of confidence in our school, and an investment in SPSG girls that is realizing significant returns. With great appreciation for all that you do for SPSG,

SENIOR GIFT For decades the Senior Class Gift has been a tradition at St. Paul’s School for Girls. Each year families of the graduating class work with school leadership to identify and fund a project that is a priority for SPSG. The Senior Gift Committee for 2014 chose to focus on the collaborative learning environment of the Upper School Technology Lab. Amy and Sean Furlong, along with Kathy and Scott Liotta and the committee, raised over $62,000 toward the Senior Gift initiative. Their gift included Annual Fund support along with the redesign of the technology lab. Renamed the Innovation, Design, Engineering, and Art Lab, and now affectionately known as the IDEA Lab, the new space includes flexible seating and 19 new MacBook Pro computers. This showcase space is used by Graphic Arts, Digital Photography, Digital Animation, and Computer Programming classes. Additionally, faculty and student groups use this space for technology projects and collaborative learning. This gift has made a positive, immediate impact on our girls. ENDOWED FUNDS Endowed funds provided over $305,000 in fiscal year 2014 allowing the school to focus additional attention on donor-designated areas of importance such as financial aid, athletics, professional development, and more. THE IVY SOCIETY Established in 1959 in its current location in Brooklandville, Maryland, St. Paul’s School for Girls has been fortunate to have the generous financial support necessary to implement and sustain the ideals of the founding Headmistress, Rosalind Levering. She believed that there was a great need for a school where the emphasis was on the “fullest possible development of personality, a school small enough and flexible enough to help each child individually develop maturity in judgment, discrimination, and perceptiveness, and to have a high standard of values.” Many agreed with her, and the school has grown, thrived, and flourished since then, sustained by voluntary contributions of time and financial support. In 1992, the Board of Trustees created the Ivy Society to recognize those members of the community who have named St. Paul’s School for Girls as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Originally a small group, the Ivy Society has grown to include trustees, alumnae, parents of alumnae, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends of the school. Members of the Ivy Society enjoy knowing that their gift will help the school prepare for the future. ST. PAUL’S PLUS
Greetings from St. Paul’s Plus, The 2013–2014 year was another great year for our preschoolers. We had such fun with the continuation of our world cultures curriculum. The children “traveled around the world” visiting five different countries. They also experienced several coordinated activities with the older students from St. Paul’s School and St. Paul’s School for Girls. Additionally, we achieved a Level 5 (highest level) within the Maryland EXCELs rating system. This is a voluntary system that assesses quality among child care centers and preschools. In an industry that requires a high school diploma and two college-level classes to be a teacher, we have eight teachers with their master’s degrees, two teachers working towards their master’s and 15 teachers with bachelor’s degrees. Additionally, we have over 500 years of combined early childhood experience. 2015 marks our 25th anniversary! Since some things have changed since we first opened, I thought I might share with you what you might not know about SPP. In 1989, SPP opened as a faculty and staff day care center and was originally located in one of the houses on campus with just three classrooms. Today, we have our own building with 16 rooms and 10 classes. In 1989 we only had children ages 2 to 4; now we have children ages 6 weeks through Pre-K. When we opened we had a small backyard play area; today we have a phenomenal playground that the children make use of three times a day. This playground was realized through a successful giving campaign and donations from SPS and SPSG. I could go on about the many activities and resource classes that our children enjoy, but as I always tell people, “The best way to get to know SPP is to come in and see our children and teachers in action.” I invite you to visit, take a tour, and see our amazing program.
