Hockey Canada’s top 6 sports & activities to develop better hockey players By Corey McNabb Many hockey specialists and coaches profess that before anything else, a good hockey player should be an athletic player. What this means is that in order to achieve their full potential, young hockey players should develop skills beyond hockey and practice other sports. To quote Corey McNabb, Senior Manager of

professional coaches profess that complete athletes make better hockey players and that specializing too early is not the best way to go for a kid’s development. So, if you want to ensure your son or daughter achieves their potential in hockey or other sports, and if you want them to develop to their full potential both physically and mentally, make sure that they develop their athletic abilities and physical literacy by being involved in other sports and activities.

Player Development at Hockey Canada, “The ability to learn agility, balance, and coordination that comes from playing a variety of sports, builds a solid foundation for athletic success, physical fitness and more importantly, staying active for life.” Hockey Canada is not alone in believing that encouraging young players to play baseball, lacrosse, soccer, or any other sport helps them improve their hockey abilities as well. Hockey greats such as Bobby Orr and

3. Racquet sports: Excellent for handeye co-ordination, lateral mobility, and quickness of body and mind

1. Lacrosse: Develops hand eye co-ordination, balance, & agility

4. Team handball: Develops overall athleticism, agility, and power

6. Baseball: Awesome for developing handeye co-ordination, athleticism, focus, and lateral movement speed

GGHA and Guelph Giants play a friendly On Saturday, November 30th the Guelph Girls Minor Hockey Atom B and the Guelph Giants hockey teams played a friendly at the West End Rec Centre. The two teams shuffled their players around and had a great time showing a lot of skill and camaraderie. This game was the result of an idea from Shane and Kayla Beaver – brother and sister who always wanted to play against each other. Kayla plays for the GGHA Atom B team and Shane plays for the Guelph Giants. For more information on the GGHA and the Guelph Giants visit their websites at: www.ggha.com and www.guelphgiantshocket.ca

Midget BB team brings smiles At a recent tournament the Jr. Gryphons Midget BB team displayed great sportsmanship and brought smiles to a lot of people. At the Niagara Falls Girls Hockey Tournament, the Midget BB division saw the Ottawa Ice meeting the Guelph Girls in the first game of round robin. The competition was spirited and the game went back and forth, keeping both goalies very busy. Late in the first period, an Ottawa player landed awkwardly and injured her ankle. The injury caused her to be removed from the game, and it was later found that her leg

was fractured. The Ottawa team ended up winning the game, and while happy with the win, it was a bittersweet victory as they lost a player for the next six to eight weeks. During the postgame coaches debriefing there was a knock on the door – thinking it was the game sheet delivery, the coaches opened the door and found three Guelph players standing there with a box of Tim Horton’s Smile cookies. The players had made an agreement with the coach that the cookies would go to the team that won the game. The Guelph players went around the Ottawa dressing room handing out

the cookies to all the players. The injured Ottawa player had already left for the hospital, and so the Guelph coach sent a Tim Horton’s gift card and a get-well card from the Guelph team to her, as she did not get to share in the post-game celebrations. This is a great example of leaving the competition on the ice and demonstrates many of the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association values of friendship, respect, fun and integrity.

GGHA looking good on the ice Guelph Girls Hockey Association (GGHA) is off to a great start this year and are proud to be wearing their new colours. After 22 years as the Guelph Thunder, the GGHA – in partnership with the University of Guelph – are now the Jr. Guelph Gryphons. With 17 house leagues and ten rep teams, the GGHA has become a well-respected organization in Ontario for the development of female hockey players. A number of teams have reached the finals of tournaments in Ontario and the U.S. in the fall of 2013, as well as winning several of them.

Healthy recipes for growing athletes Rapini and Shrimp Pasta Serves: 4 to 6 Ingredients: 3 cups penne or rotini pasta 1 bunch rapini (about 1 lb/500g) trimmed and coarsely chopped 2 tbsp canola oil, divided 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp hot pepper flakes 1 tsp dried basil 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 large red onion, very thinly sliced 1 ½ cups sliced mushrooms (1/4 inch thick slices) ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Directions: Step 1: In a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and transfer to a large serving bowl. Step 2: Meanwhile, in a saucepan, bring 3 cups (750 ml) water to a boil over high heat. Add rapini, reduce heat to medium-high, cover and boil for 3 to 4 minutes or until just tender. Drain and rinse under cold running water; set aside. Step 3: In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp (15 ml) oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic, hot pepper flakes and basil for 1 minute or until garlic starts to soften but does not brown. Add shrimp and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes or until starting to turn pink. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook for 2 minutes, until shrimp are pink and opaque. Transfer shrimp to a bowl and set aside. Step 4: Wipe out skillet. Increase heat to medium-high and add the remaining oil. Sauté onions and mushrooms for 3 to 4 minutes or until onions are softened. Add rapini and shrimp and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes or until heated through. Step 5: Pour shrimp mixture over pasta and stir to combine. Sprinkle with Parmesan.

Guelph gears up for synchro season Articles by Louise McIntyre, photos by Steven Brooks

The synchronized swimming season is well underway. January is an exciting month, as it is the start of the competitive season for many of our athletes. The Guelph Synchronized Swim Club is very honoured and proud to be hosting three Synchro Swim Ontario meets – Lisa Alexander Figures Meets in combination with the Provincial Qualifier and the Ontario Winter Games Qualifier – during the weekend of January 24-26, 2014 at the Victoria Road Recreation Centre – Victor Davis Pool. All competitive synchronized swimmers in the province are required to swim at the Lisa Alexander Figures Meet. During a figures meet, each athlete individually performs a total of four figures, that are drawn two weeks prior to the competition, in front of a panel of five judges. Figures are technical positions that are performed without music. All athletes compete within their age group wearing a standard black swimsuit, white swimcap, goggles and noseclip, and

are scored on a 1 to 10 scale. The Provincial Qualifier is a routine competition for national level athletes, and the Ontario Winter Games Qualifier is specifically for teams aged 11-12 and 13-15 who are vying for a spot to compete in the 2014 Ontario Winter Games that will be held February 27 to March 2, 2014 in Muskoka. Routines are composed of a variety of figures, positions, transitions, arm movements and strokes. They often have impressive highlights where swimmers lift or throw one of their teammates out of the water. Swimmers also need to be synchronized with Swimmers also need to be synchronized each other and with the music, all the while not touching the bottom of the pool. with each other and with the music, all the
