Competitive opportunities ahead! Submitted by CTC Obstacles CTC is excited to welcome 2019 with a fun, new endeavour. As many of you know, our first competition in October was a great time with many warriors completing more obstacles then they ever had before while trying new and fun challenges. Our adult division was fewer in numbers, but the competitors were just as determined and talented. And now the exciting news … we have become an OFFICIAL MEMBER of the Competitive National Ninja League! We are only one of a few gyms in Canada – and internationally – to join this United States League. We already have a few of our warriors competing at the worlds in February, and we’re looking forward to growing our competitive teams! Our first league event will be a rec tournament in the spring, as the 2019/2020 competitive season starts later in the year. BUT we will be holding our own RECREATIONAL COMPETITION on February 2-3! We can’t wait to hold this awesome event again, and we’re looking forward to all of you returning to compete again and encouraging new warriors to come out and show us your best! This is a great way to get started in this awesome sport, have fun, and be a part of a new, emerging group of ninja warriors in southwestern Ontario!

New Year, New You? Submitted by Athletic Fluency Looking to make significant physical changes in January’s resolution-oriented month? While New Year’s resolutions and yearly goal-setting are a great idea, let’s be realistic: ‘quick-fix trending diets’ are completely flawed. If you want to change your physique, you must be willing to change your lifestyle and commit to your health – both mentally and physically. Lasting results stem from lasting habits. Typically, fad diets enforce routines that are naturally unsustainable and set you up for failure. Commonly, they cause people to rebound and reverse the initial effectiveness of the diet. In fact, Body and Health Canada reported that despite the fact 85% of people lose weight in a quick-fix fad diet, only 15% are typically successful in keeping the weight off after two years. It has also been proven that many individuals gain back more weight than they lost in the first place. Here at Athletic Fluency, our mission is to have our members reach, sustain, and build off their personal goals. Rather than a fix n’ ditch approach, we believe in building a lifestyle. Whether you prefer personal training, small group training, or independent training, our trainers are dedicated resources – both in the gym and regarding nutrition. With our partnering nutritionists, supplements’ supplier, and physiological knowledge, working with us will provide you with long-term tools that will have you feeling healthier,

stronger, and more confident in all aspects of your life. Athletic Fluency is more than a gym. It’s a lifestyle, and its trainers are dedicated to helping members reach, sustain, and build off their personal goals

Interest growing for adult baseball Submitted by London Mens Baseball League The London Mens Baseball League has proven to be a unique and successful organization that continues to gain notoriety in London and the surrounding communities throughout southwestern Ontario. After 26 consecutive seasons, this not-for-profit association has proven to be the most successful adult baseball league in the area – with 14 teams playing 17 regular season (and 3 playoff) games per year. Beginning as a Sunday evening league when it debuted in 1992, the LMBL

has morphed into an ‘anytime’ Sunday league to capitalize on quality diamond time in the London community, and to accommodate a growing playing schedule. Since the LMBL isn’t a ‘slop-pitch’ league – but rather real recreational ‘baseball,’ park usage is focused on quality diamonds such as Labatt Park (where over 30 percent of league games are played) and Dan Pulham Stadium. The league also supplies Baseball Ontario certified umpires and paid scorekeepers for each game, and utilizes the GameChanger scorekeeping platform

to give its players and fans all the juicy stats that ballplayers love! Registration for the 2019 season is well under way and closing soon. The league fills up quickly – generally being full by Feb 15 each year. Players range in age from 30-80+, so all are welcome! For more information about the LMBL and how to participate, visit us online.

www.lmblbaseball.ca

The LMBL is a drafting league, as all new players register as individuals and are allocated to the existing 14 teams in the league through the drafting process in April. We do not accept team entries. We are a recreational league, but playing experience is recommended. Players must be cognizant of their abilities, as baseball can be a dangerous game for those lacking the basic skills necessary. Our league ranges in age from 30-80. The LMBL has grown over the years, since its debut 26 years ago. Games are played at high-quality diamonds, including Dan Pulham Stadium and the historic Labatt Park, which is shown here.

Registration for 2019 is now open. Visit our website for more information, or to register.

A season to remember Submitted by LDBA Baseball With the 2019 baseball season just around the corner, it’s time to reflect on what a fantastic year 2018 was for the London and District Baseball Association. We continue to hold our own with enrollment, as most of the local associations are seeing significant increases in registration – not only at our youngest ages, but even in bantam and midget. Some of our travel divisions saw team increases as well, and certainly our local leagues had tremendous growth. This is in part to the dedication of the volunteer board members and coaches for investing a lot of time and effort in the development of programs – both on and off the field. The London Badgers were on the national stage once again in 2018, as they took part in the 18u Baseball Canada

National Championships hosted in Fort McMurry, Alberta. The Badgers once again won gold, making it back-to-back championships, and they did so while representing the LDBA in impeccable fashion. The 18u Badgers also captured Ontario Elimination Gold. Meanwhile, London was the host for the Ontario Summer Games in 2018, and the 15u London Badgers, who represented the LDBA in the baseball competition, won gold at home at Labatt Park. The 2018 season also saw, for the first time in many years, a dedicated select baseball program at the mosquito and peewee levels. This was a pilot for 2018, and feedback received was very positive. The plans for 2019 are to continue with those two divisions while also looking at adding a rookie ball division. Also in 2018, the St. Thomas Minor Baseball Association hosted the TD 21u Mens National Championships. The event was ‘first-class’ from Baseball Canada’s perspective, and Emslie Field saw some 800 people take in the gold medal game between Windsor and Mississauga. The 2019 LDBA season is shaping up to be another very busy and exciting year. The London Badgers will be hosting the 18u National Championships – both

St. Thomas Minor Baseball, meanwhile, has been awarded the Ontario Eliminations at the peewee age level (13u), and the local associations once again will be hosting some of the largest local tournaments in the province, with the Cardinal Classic in St. Thomas, the Trevor Barton Memorial London Badgers tournament, the London Tecumsehs tournament, and the Bob Stark London West tournament. Each tournament draws a significant number of teams who visit, stay and play in the London area.

A local soccer legend By Greg Matthison In early November, Tom Partalas took his rightful place among the city’s most significant sports figures, both past and present, as the local soccer builder was inducted into the London Sports Hall of Fame – in an induction ceremony event at the Western Fair District. Known to many simply as ‘Mr. Soccer,’ Tom has served the London soccer community in all areas – and at all levels – since the late 1960’s. He immigrated to the Forest City in 1967 from Greece, where he was born, and he had an immediate impact on the soccer pitch in London, becoming an all-star player for the Western University Mustangs and playing professionally with the London City Soccer Club (1969-70). In 1971, along with John Henderson, Tom organized the first youth competitive soccer league in London (today, more than 17,000 young people play soccer in the city). He transitioned to coaching

minor soccer in the 1970s, and did so for more than two decades. In 1994, he began refereeing, which he still does to this day. That same year, Tom became an executive member of the Southwest Optimist Indoor Soccer League. He was a member of the Mayors’ Task Force on soccer in 1998, which ultimately developed 16 new outdoor soccer fields, and in 2001 he served as a venue leader for soccer when London hosted the Canada Summer Games that year. Tom was part of a group of members (the Southwest Optimist Club) who took over an indoor soccer facility in east London and turned it into a highly-successful indoor sports centre. And he was the driving force behind the creation of the $14.5 million BMO Centre in London, which opened in 2011 has become the hub for indoor soccer in London (and which recently underwent an expansion). He’s the long-time President of the

London Optimist Sports Centre, which operates the BMO Centre. Tom has earned many honours along Tom Partalas is the president and the way, includ- CEO of the London Optimist Sports Centre, which operates the ing: a Centre BMO Centre Circle Award from the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA), in 2010, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to growing the game; a local Pillar Community Award (2011); a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (in 2012); and a spot on the City of London’s Honour Roll (2017). And now, Tom has earned his rightful place in the London Sports Hall of Fame. It’s a prestigious honour, and it’s one that is well-deserved for a tremendous builder of soccer in this city. Marcoccia back for ‘19 Submitted by FC LONDON The 2018 season was a banner year for FC LONDON, headed by League1 Ontario head coach Michael Marcoccia, who gathered hardware and honours throughout the year. The FC LONDON Men’s team went 13-5-2, had five players named all-stars, and rostered the league’s Young Player of the Year (Marko Malitek). Meanwhile, Marcoccia led the women’s team to a record of 12-2-1 and a third straight regular season championship. Six women were named all-stars, and Jade Kovacevic earned Golden Boot MVP honours for the third year in a row. Marcoccia has confirmed a contract which will keep him as the head coach of the club throughout the 2019 outdoor season. “I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve as a club,” says Marcoccia. “The management gives me flexibility in picking the squad and applying training methodologies that are proven winners worldwide. Our goal now is to continue with this momentum into 2019.” On the men’s side, the Canadian soccer landscape changes with the debut of the

Canadian Premier League, scheduled to start in 2019. An affiliation between League1 Ontario and CPL will start to create a true pathway for players to a professional environment. League1 coaches are working directly with CPL ownership groups and head coaches to coordinate trials, creating opportunities for players who are looking to join professional teams. “CPL is a great complement to the Canadian landscape,” says Marcoccia. “Having our own men’s league … and the possibility of a professional women’s league in the future … will allow Canada to be more competitive on the world stage.” On the youth side, FC LONDON’s ‘London TFC Academy’ has completed its first year in the OPDL for U13 boys and girls. This will expand in 2019 to U13 and U14 players, who will get their chance to compete against other top youth players

around the province. With teams playing in the Ontario Academy Soccer League and the Ontario Player Development League, FC LONDON is creating a solid pathway for players, regardless of gender or level of play, which in combination with its U21 programs for young men and women bodes well for the continued growth and development of London and area players. “From our professional team partnership with 2017 MLS Champion Toronto FC, through to our local partnerships with Strathroy United SC, St. Thomas FC and Lambeth Soccer Club, it’s definitely an exciting time,” says FC LONDON CEO Ian Campbell. “We’re always looking for ways to create opportunities for players, and we seem to be on the right track to find that right formula to make it a winwin for everyone.” Keep track of all the FC LONDON news.

Banner fall for ‘Stangs Submitted by the Western Mustangs

Football The Western Mustangs continued their charge through the OUA, going undefeated in the regular season. In their eight regular season games, Western scored 384 points and only allowed 184 against, averaging out to 48 points for and 11 against per game. In the playoffs, the Mustangs beat Carleton 39-13 in the semi-final and then cruised to a 63-14 over Guelph to capture back-to-back Yates Cup championships. Western then faced the University of

Saskatchewan Huskies in the national semi-final, winning 47-24 to capture the Mitchell Bowl. The Mustangs finished the season at the Vanier Cup, in Quebec City, against the Laval Rouge et Or. It was a hardfought game, with Laval coming out on top 34-20. It was another incredible run for the Mustangs, and one they will look to pick up again in 2019 when the season begins August 25 on the road at Laurier.

Women’s Soccer Western served as host of the OUA

Final Four championships in women’s soccer, and the Mustangs provided plenty of excitement over the weekend in early November. The purple and white earned a silver medal and a birth to the national championship after beating Queen’s in the semi-final. They ultimately lost, 1-0, in the finals to the eventual national champion Ottawa Gee Gees.

Tennis The Mustangs’ men's and women's teams made it a gold sweep at the 2018 OUA Championships.

The Western women continued their domination on the diamond, winning their ninth straight (and 11th overall) Ontario Championship in the fall.

The Mustangs’ football team won back-to-back Yates Cup championships and the Mitchell Bowl before falling in the Vanier Cup against Laval.

Men’s Lacrosse On the lacrosse field, the Western

The Mustangs beat Brock, 9-8, in the finals to take home the title when third-year attack Tristan Simeoni scored in overtime. Fourth-year attack Cody Ward earned Most Valuable Player honours in the championships after scoring five goals over the weekend, including two in the finale over Brock.

The Mustangs’ women’s softball team won their 11th Ontario Championship (and ninth in a row) this fall. Western beat Laurier in the finals, 17-1. Third baseman Megan Parno was selected as the Championship MVP, while shortstop Isabella Kennedy and pitcher Rachael Jacques were All-Star selections.

New coach? No problem Submitted by the London Lightning and photo by Don Rycroft/London Camera Club The London Lightning and former head coach Keith Vassell decided to mutually part ways after a weekend in December in which the Lightning lost two games in a row. After failing to reach 100 points in either game, a change was needed. After one full year behind the bench, Vassell led the Lightning to their fourth championship title. So, in comes the new head coach,

Elliott Etherington. Etherington was the assistant coach last season underneath Vassell. Having veterans like Garrett Williamson and Mo Bolden return to the team this season, the transition looks to be smooth for the new head coach. “The great thing is that there's a good mixture of guys that I'm comfortable with and guys I got to learn about, and that creates an awesome opportunity and

The London Lightning made a change at head coach in December, as former assistant Elliott Etherington took over to guide the defending NBL champs as they eye another championship run

challenge as a coach,” said Etherington. One of the biggest areas that the new coach wanted to stress when he took over was the team’s attitude and attention to detail on the defensive side of the ball. “I think, all in all, we have to focus on tough defense and our principals … make sure we’re on the same page,” said Etherington. “If we can do all of that, combined with positive energy and togetherness, the sky's the limit for this team.” Etherington’s head coaching debut came on December 15, when the Lightning travelled to Sudbury to take on the high flying Five offence. The Lightning players looked energized and rejuvenated under their new head coach. Coming out of the gates roaring, leading 26-15 after the first quarter, the Lightning finished the game with a 120117 victory. And although the Lightning allowed 117 points, it was defensive stops at the end of the game (and the return of their potent offence) that stood out in the win. You can catch the London Lightning in action all winter long at Budweiser Gardens. For tickets and more information, visit www.lightningbasketball.ca and follow us on social media.

Street basketball is back! Street Basketball May 25 & 26, 2019

By SportsXpress Team They revived a popular street hockey tradition by launching the first GOT GAME Street Hockey Tournament last year, and now they’re doing the same for basketball. And the very first GOT GAME Street Basketball Tournament is coming very soon – this spring, on May 25-26, 2019 at Victoria Park. It’s been many years since London and area streetballers have had a tournament to play in, since the old Gus Macker tournament pulled out of the city more than a decade ago. But basketball is now

back – and in a big way. Following in the footsteps of their highly-successful debut GOT GAME Street Hockey Tournament last spring, the sports event management company is reviving another tournament tradition. “There is great demand for street basketball in the city and beyond,” says Greg Matthison, the captain at GOT GAME Sports. “It’s basketball in its purest form: outdoors, battling for loose balls, and playing with friends – and with big crowds watching the action. It’s been a long time since Londoners have had a big basketball tournament in our backyard, so we’re excited to bring ballers an event that they deserve.” Whether it’s the hometown London Lightning and their championship-calibre play year in and year out, or the Toronto Raptors,

Street basketball will take over the streets of Victoria Park similar street hockey events.

Canada’s team, who have been legitimate contenders in recent years in the NBA, the interest in basketball has increased in the Forest City, and more youngsters are picking up the game (while older players are returning to the sport). The GOT GAME Street Basketball Tournament will feature hundreds of teams and thousands of players and fans the weekend of May 25-26, when Victoria Park – and the surrounding streets – will be taken over by basketball action. All ages – young, old and in-between – are expected to attend the tournament, and there will be recreational and competitive divisions. “There will be something for everyone,” Matthison says. “We have been planning this for a few years, and we’re excited to bring this type of an event back to the community.” For more information, visit

Youth basketball fun Submitted by Elite Stars Basketball Elite Stars Basketball is an organization in the St. Thomas community offering opportunities to youth, women, and men for recreational and competitive play. It is owned and operated by Jesse Foster. New to Elite Stars this year is the development of competitive-level youth basketball teams. Current teams provide competitive play opportunities to boys between the ages of 12 and 16 (U14 and U16), and the organization has goals to develop a girls team (and additional boys teams) to meet the community demand

for youth basketball. The Youth House League, which just finished its 11th season, currently offers recreational play to youth between grades 1 to 8. A high school division will be added to the league in the Spring of 2019 for grades 9 to 12, including both men’s and women’s divisions. The Men’s 35+ Masters League, going into its 5th season, continues to run strong with eight teams, each playing once a week in the Spring season. The Women’s League is currently running its second season, with four teams (and an-

ticipating the addition of two more teams for next Fall). Game recaps and full stats are posted online weekly for the players. Dipping into competition Submitted by Middlesex Swimming When Middlesex Swimming’s 13-andunder team headed to Tillsonburg for the Acapulco Invitational meet (hosted by the Ingersoll Speed Sharks), it marked the first time that many of the team’s swimmers had participated in a competitive meet. Certainly, there were some nerves, but the experience was a fantastic one for the young swimmers. “They were super excited to compete, and they’re now looking forward to a great season,” said Brooke, one of the team’s coaches (along with Coach Tim). The pair have been working hard to build up the 13-and-under program, and they’ve already had a lot of success. “We’re looking forward to continuing to coach our younger swimmers and teaching them the values and discipline that it takes to compete in the sport for life,” said Brooke. “We’re definitely off to a great start, and we’re happy with the results early in the season.”

Young inspiration Submitted by Olympic Karate When you spend most of your life as a martial arts instructor, you get to work with tens of thousands of young people. You help them to develop as citizens,

scholars, and capable martial artists. One such youngster, Austin Davies, started with us at Olympic Karate as a Little Dragon (4 to 6 years old) in September 2015. When Austin first started training, he didn’t have a ton of confidence. But he was a good listener, and he was a hard worker. Austin was determined to be successful, setting goals to become a black belt and a good fighter. Austin is now a green belt in our advanced children’s class; he is still a hard worker and has also become a good fighter in our sparring classes. He is aggressive, but still has good defensive skills. He is learning when to attack and when to counterattack. In other words, he is learning to move and think like a fighter.

Austin Davies has experienced significant development at the dojo since he joined as a Little Dragon (4-6 years old) in September 2015. Today, he’s a green belt in Olympic Karate’s advanced children’s class.

We are proud of the work and commitment that Austin has put into his training, and we look forward to one day seeing his name on our list of black belts!

New goals for new year Submitted by Family Karate The past year has brought a lot of success to our team members at Family Karate. We saw one of our members compete in Ireland, and a couple of our coaches compete internationally as well. The majority of our members compete more locally, and they achieved quite a few goals while doing so this year. Some goals still need to be tweaked, but over-

all we had a great year! The Family Karate Competition Team is holding tryouts in mid-January, with the competition season starting soon after. The coaches, team members, parents and family are all excited for what 2019 will hold in terms of competition. What goals will be set? Which ones will be met? The answer to the latter question is

always connected to effort and time put into training. In 2018, the coaches saw much effort and dedication, and so our expectations are high. We know that our team members will deliver, because of their consistent hard work that we see put forth week-in and week-out. We can't wait to see what 2019 brings!

LEGALLY SPEAKING - FEATURING PHILLIP MILLAR

New impaired driving laws: What to know? By Nick Cake for Millars Law

As of December 18, 2018, the impaired driving laws in Canada have become some of the toughest in the world. It is essential that all drivers know the new state of the law and the jeopardy they could possibly face. Here’s a look at the top 5 issues to consider about the new impaired driving laws in Canada …

1. Every driver can be compelled to provide a roadside sample, and the police do not need a specific reason to ask for it. Formerly, an officer requesting a roadside sample was required to have a reasonable suspicion that the accused had alcohol in their body. Now, all the demanding officer needs is a roadside device on them. They don’t need an odor of alcohol or an admission of consumption, but rather simply to have the roadside device in their possession. That alone will be all the officer needs to require a roadside sample.

2. Do not refuse the roadside sample, even if you haven’t been drinking. The current law is certainly questionable, but until the courts strike it down, it is a valid law that must be followed. The minimum sentence for a refusal is $2,000. That goes for the breath demand at the station as well. Refusal in the face of a valid breath demand at the station will result in a minimum penalty of $2,000. The offense also carries a mandatory minimum driving prohibition of one year. 3. If you are convicted of impaired driving, on a first offense, the minimum fines have increased. Readings between .08-.119 will attract a $1,000 fine, and .120-.159 will now see a minimum fine of $1,500. Blow twice the legal limit or more and face a fine of $2,000. A minimum 12-month driving prohibition accompanies these fines. 4. It’s not all bad. The new impaired laws provide avenues for creative sentencing. With the consent of the crown, sentencing can be delayed for the completion of a rehabilitation program. Once proof is provided to the court, it is open to the defense to argue for sentences

that fall below the mandatory minimums, including the driving prohibition. 5. The new law does not require any minimum period of driving prohibition. Currently, the minimum driving prohibition upon conviction is 3 months in Ontario – with the Stream A interlock program. Under the new laws, that 3-month wait is no longer mandatory. At this time, though, our provincial government has not put a program in place to allow for anything earlier than 3 months, which means that we can’t take advantage of this clause just yet. The best defense is to always take a cab, get a ride, call a friend, and plan ahead. However, if you or someone you know has been charged with impaired driving, then the best defense is a call to Millars Law. Our team of lawyers is ready to fight for the best result.

Three cheers for youth! Submitted by CheerStrike Youth cheer is where it’s at for the CheerStrike Royals. Our largest number of athletes in the Royal Family are children aged 9 to 11. With so many athletes active in competitive cheer between these ages, CheerStrike Royals Inc. is proud to offer teams at multiple levels to ensure that each athlete is on a team perfectly suited to their skill level and experience. With our growing Youth program, our successes on the competition floor have also grown. Last season, we watched our Youth Level 1 team, Imperial, capture a National Title and an invitation to the Canadian Finals as one of the best level 1 teams in the country. This season, at our first American competition, at the Kalahari Resort, we saw all our Youth teams – Imperial, Regal, Reign and Heiress – finish as the highest-ranked Canadian teams in each of their respective divisions. We offer the only Youth level 3 team in London Ontario, and we were so excited to see these very talented young athletes leave Kalahari with a first-place finish. Meanwhile, our fifth youth-aged team is our most important team. Youth Aristocrats is our prep team, which allows children aged 9 to 11 who are new to cheer to enter the sport in a non-intimidating environment. This team allows

athletes to learn the basics of cheer and develop the required skills to progress through all the levels we offer without feeling like they are behind athletes who have been in the sport for years. If you have a child between the ages of 9 to 11 who is interested in trying out cheer, contact us today to get signed up at info@cheerstrikeroyals.com.

‘Dreams don’t work unless you do’ By Richelle Hirlehey In November, 12-year-old Emma Blesity, a Dance Extreme dance student, had an opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to dance down Main Street U.S.A. in Disney’s The Magic Kingdom. “I’m very grateful that I had the chance to be part of the Be Discovered Disney Intensive program, choreographed by William Blair,” shared Emma of the experience. “Will is a talented professional Dancer who has performed in several shows, commercials, and concerts. Hel also has a degree in Psychology and specializes in youth outreach programs. He’s a role model. He was very focused on education.” Emma has been dancing at Dance Extreme since she was 2 and a half years old. She attended Dance Extreme’s Creative Movement classes at a young age, and she has since blossomed into a dedicated, hardworking, passionate dancer. Her Disney experience provided Emma with many new dance ‘firsts,’ but what she remembers most are the words of Choreographer William Blair. “He said repeatedly that school always comes first, even if

you want to pursue a career in dance. He taught us that the dance industry is tough and competitive. He stressed the importance of working hard because talent and skill are not enough. Will said dreams don’t work unless you do. Throughout the program, he threw daily challenges at all the dancers to see who was ready to work during the long sessions.” Laura Ashley Foster, Talent Director, who specializes in the art of musical theatre and was a Disney performer, organized guest instructors from all genres of dance, including Jazz and Ballet, a professional photo shoot, a mock audition with a real casting Director from Disney World, and many fun team events with the 23 dancers from all over North America. When asked about her most memo-

rable moments, Emma shared that she performed on ‘The Beauty and The Beast’ stage in Hollywood Studios and in the ‘Dance the Magic’ Christmas parade on Main Street U.S.A. in the Magic Kingdom. Emma’s joy for the art of dance is evident when she shares of her experience. “I cannot express how appreciative I am to be a part of such an amazing program,” she said. “Thank you, Be Discovered and Dance the Magic, for such a wonderful opportunity.” Emma also attributes her experiences leading up to her trip of a lifetime and thanks her “phenomenal dance studio,” Dance Extreme, for “the world’s best instructors and their care and support.” Dance Extreme congratulates Emma on her first international performance!

Another new record! Submitted by Preferred Insurance The annual Preferred Insurance fundraising drive for Childcan produced another astonishing result in 2018 thanks to the commitment and generosity of more than 100 business partners. A lofty goal of $50,000 was set this year, following huge success and growth the past few years, and we not only met it – we surpassed it and set a new record! The pinnacle of the drive is the mas-

sive ‘Turkey Bowl’ event, which serves as a thank you to our business partners and supporters – not to mention, it’s a big fun day to celebrate our joint achievement. Since the event added the charitable component (supporting Childcan) seven years ago, the total amount raised has now surpassed $300,000! “We are amazed, honoured and extremely grateful for the support that we receive,” says Peter Carr of Preferred Insurance. “The Turkey Bowl is a special day for our business partners, as we invite them to connect with us on a mission to raise money for Childcan. It’s an amazing organization that helps families navigate emotionally and financially during battles with childhood cancer.”

The biggest transformation for the event came from partnering with BELFOR Property Restoration as our Signature Event Partner. The move has substantially helped take it to another level, and we are very thankful for their continued partnership. The Turkey Bowl is a fun day with a special purpose, and it's proof that many hands joining together can accomplish something truly outstanding. All-Star Partners who made special excess donations beyond regular partnership amounts include: Gore Mutual Insurance Company ($5,000), Enterprise Rent-A-Car ($3,000) and Heartland Farm Mutual ($2,500). We are extremely proud and grateful to have such fantastic partners. Together, we raised $53,125 for The Turkey Bowl is the pinnacle event celebrating the results of the fundraising drive by Preferred Insurance and its partners for Childcan, an organization that helps families with children battling cancer. Dragons fierce on the ice Contributions by Troy Glover The Dorchester Dragons Atom AE team enjoyed a strong first half to their 2018-19 hockey season, and they’re now eagerly playing the second half, excited for what’s in store down the stretch. The first half saw the Dragons post an overall record of 17-7-4 (prior to the Christmas break), which included some

big wins in regular season action – and also exciting wins in tournament play. In fact, the Atom AE squad, which is part of the Dorchester Minor Hockey Association (DMHA), won their first tournament of the year, the St. George Tournament, in convincing fashion. They went 5-1 during the Oct. 19-21 week-

end, and avenged an earlier loss to the Strathroy Jr. Rockets by beating them 4-1 in the gold-medal game. “We have an incredible group of kids,” says Troy Glover, the team’s head coach. “They’ve learned to leverage each other's strengths, and they trust each other, work hard and are able to adapt to different teams quickly.” Glover, who grew up playing the game himself (including at the Junior B level), says the focus as the players continue to develop will be improving their puck movement, skating and quick-thinking. “And, most of all,” Glover says, “being a great teammate and individual – both on and off the ice.” The Dragons are looking to build off a fantastic first half, which also saw them earn a silver medal at the Southpoint Tournament in Leamington (Nov. 23-25) and a gold medal at the Ayr Regional Silver Stick Tournament (Dec. 6-9). “With the support of the coaches, parents and sponsors [The Mill Pond Tap & Grill, Flight Exec, Performance Painting],” Glover says, “we’re really looking forward to a successful second half of the season!”

Good deed for Peewee players Contributions by Mount Brydges Cougars In the spirit of the season, the Mount Brydges Cougars Peewee Blue team visited a nursing home in mid-December and spread some holiday cheer amongst the residents, as both players and their elders took part in some hockey activi-

ties at the social event. The Country Terrace residence in Komoka was filled with players wearing their Cougars uniforms on December 16, as they spent time socializing with the seniors – and played some hockey! The

Peewees (a group of 11 and 12-year-olds) brought sticks, nets and oversized indoor pucks, and enjoyed some wheelchair hockey. “We’re going to try and give them an opportunity to actually play the sport once again,” said one Cougars player prior to the outing. And that’s exactly what they did, as the residence was filled with smiles all day as the youngsters connected with the seniors through the great Canadian game. The Cougars produced a YouTube video of the day, and they’re entering it into the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup competition, which promotes youth hockey teams to do good works in their communities. The winning prize of the contest is $100,000 to be given to the charity of the team’s choice – in addition to other neat honours, including a team profile on Hockey Night in Canada. “We had a great day today with the seniors, and I hope they enjoyed it too,” said another Cougar player in the video, which was filmed by volunteer Chris Regier, a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School. The Peewees’ head coach, Mario Schembri, was also on hand and proud of his players for giving back to the community. Nice job on the good deed, Cougars, and good luck in the contest!

Juniors seeking consistency Submitted by Komoka Kings Hockey Club The second season for the Kings in the heart of Komoka got off to a great start, as the team was consistently playing .500 hockey. Later in the fall, though, the boys found themselves skating on some bumpy ice at times, despite being able to muster up some great offense against league-leading teams like the London Nationals and the Leamington Flyers. Part of the reason is that the team has gone through a number of roster changes since the beginning of the year, which has resulted in a team on the bench

experiencing a state of flux while they finetune the lineup and pick up another few players. The Kings recently acquired goaltender Nathan Young, who came from the Exeter Hawks, forward Cameron Welch from the Chatham Maroons, and Dillon Ward, a forward from the Stratford Warriors. “We’re trying to find the right mix of players for our style of game,” says Head Coach Ron Horvat. “We’re workToronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings

Growing girls’ games Contributions by Chloe Jonsson and Madison Chantler At Snipe Academy, female hockey players are receiving top-notch coaching. They’re improving their skills, developing as players and people, and bringing their talent back to the teams they play for. Here’s a look at a couple of young players who have been positively impacted by Snipe Academy …

Chloe Jonsson After playing one year of Tyke hockey, Chloe Jonsson played up a year in her Minor Novice season in boys’ hockey. She met some female players she really liked, and so she decided to then move over to the London Devilettes program for her Major Novice season. Now a Minor Bantam player, she’s currently playing this year for the Devilettes’ Bantam A Dodgson team. Meanwhile, Chloe has also been training at Snipe Academy, where she works hard with the facility’s coaches to further develop her skills and improve as an all-around player. Specifically, she’s been learning from Cassidy Martin and Kalley Armstrong, who have helped her in a number of areas. “I’ve developed better wrist and slot shots, and I have also learned how to do snap shots,” says Chloe, adding that her stickhandling has also improved. “I shoot a lot better. Cass and Kalley tell me to keep my head up when I shoot, and

that has really helped. I have scored a lot of goals so far this year.” Her improved skills have allowed Chloe to have more individual success on the ice, and also help her Devilettes’ team improve as a unit. Training at Snipe, Chloe says, has been very enjoyable, and she’s developed friendships along the way. “I really like my Snipe coaches because they teach me hockey in fun ways,” Chloe says. “Kalley and Cass are easy to talk to, and they really encourage me to be my best.”

Chloe Jonsson (left) and Madison Chantler, who play in the London Devilettes’ hockey program, both train at Snipe Academy as they look to take their games to the next level

puck skills, as well as shooting. And she has experienced significant gains. “I’m becoming more confident with the puck and with my shot,” Madison says, adding that her training at Snipe has helped her to be more confident in general on the ice. “I’ve developed a quicker, harder and more accurate shot, and I’m becoming a better hockey player overall.” Working with the staff at Snipe Academy has been enjoyable for Madison, and she finds that it’s a great facility where she can work on specific areas of her game – including the little things that can make a big difference. “There’s a lot of opportunity to work on my shooting and puck skills in ways that I don't work on them at practice,” says Madison. “I really enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere [at Snipe]. They have great instructors who are very knowledgeable.”

Madison Chantler She’s been playing hockey since age 4, and Madison Chantler has been a London Devilette – at the competitive level – since Novice. This season, the talented youngster is playing Bantam AA – and AP for the Devilettes’ Junior team. She was also selected last summer to play in the 2018 Ontario Summer Games, which was hosted in London, and she earned a spot at the 2018 ‘Fuelling Future Athletes’ invitational hockey camp, which was sponsored by Gatorade and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Madison also trains at Snipe Academy in town, where she works on improving various aspects of her game. The youngster says she’s been working with coaches there on her stickhandling and

ing through it and there may be more changes, but we just take it one game and one practice at a time. We’re on the right track with Owner and President Roop Chanderdat standing firmly behind us giving us the tools and players to be successful.” Recently, Ron was the recipient of a special 25th Anniversary gold pin to recognize and honour individuals from Alliance Member Associations who contribute to the promotion, coordination and maintenance of Alliance hockey. Winning in bunches By Fraser Weir By the mid-way point of this year’s OHL season, the Knights had gotten off to a tremendous start, as the team sat atop the Western Conference standings with the highest winning percentage in the entire league. The success this season has truly been a team effort. It was unclear at the start of the year whether star players Alex Formenton and Evan Bouchard would return from the NHL, so the lineup was ripe with opportunity for the first month and a half of the season. In that first month and a half, Knights fans saw players step up and play major minutes – and with more responsibility than ever. Players like Connor McMichael, who led the team in points at the midway mark; Cole Tymkin, who had

already posted a career high in points and goals scored by midseason; William Lochead, who returned home to London and has become a leader – on and off the ice; and Adam Boqvist, who has made a very smooth transition from European ice to North American ice, playing at over a point-per-game level. These players became standouts as they led the Knights to a strong start to the season. Come Halloween, it was announced that both Bouchard and Formenton were going to be returning from their NHL teams. This sent ripple effects across the league. With Bouchard and Formenton back, Paul Cotter announced his commitment to the Knights. Cotter, a 4th round pick by the Vegas Golden Knights, along with over-ager Lochead, have brought a

gritty toughness to the lineup that has transformed the team into a group that opponents do not like facing. Bouchard and Formenton have shone in their returns to the OHL, with both players averaging over a point per game prior to the midway mark of the season (and with the Knights losing just one game that they’d played in during the first half). The pair would make any team a contender – let alone this year’s Knights squad. With those three additions, the Knights went on to have a perfect month of November, winning 15 straight games to launch them into a race with the Ottawa 67’s for the best record in the league. The Knights also played their way into the CHL top 10 rankings and have become a mainstay there. There is still a lot of work left for London, and the second half of the season brings new challenges and new-look teams (after having made moves ahead of the OHL’s January 10 trade deadline), but the Knights showed in the first half of the season that they’ve got the talent to go a long way in 2018-2019.

The London Knights have been dominant at times during the 2018-2019 OHL season, including winning 15 games in a row. They were at or near the top of the league standings the entire first half of the year and are looking to make a strong playoff push.
