Promising career for Madison Broad Article by SportsXpress, Photo credit Julia Dueñas Madison Broad started swimming lessons at five years old; her parents’ effort to curb her hyperactivity. Turns out they were on to something. The seventeen year old represented Canada in the Pan Pacific Games in Fiji this August and brought home three medals, two silver and one bronze – Chatham-Kent’s first International Swimming Medals. The Pan Pacific Games was the next step in a promising swimming career. One Broad took on as a learning experience “It’s a great opportunity to learn what it will be like to travel and swim away from North America. So when I do make the national team for a senior level international competition like the Olympics, I will feel ready.” Competing in a world event was an eye opener for the Wallaceburg native that came with its own set of challenges. “The competition was tough and I think I can take away a lot of experience from that. The most challenging part of the meet was staying hydrated. I swim my best that way… In Fiji the water that comes from the tap isn’t always good (for drinking). We only got one big water bottle each day and running out was a big problem for me.. The time change was also hard because I had to totally switch my day around.” Challenges faced, Madison answered back. She got a best time in both the 100 and 200 meter back, something that has evaded her for several tournaments. After all the fanfare was over and the two day travel back home, Madison

slept for 18 hours straight, woke up to do interviews and went back to sleep – trying to adjust back to this time zone. She realizes that being from a small town has shaped who she is as an athlete. “I think coming from a small community has taught me good sportsmanship. Being with a small group of team mates has taught me this because we are so tightly knit… When I go and have a bad meet, I realize that someone has to win, whether that’s me or someone else.” She is thankful for the support and gives back whenever she can, making appearances at elementary schools to teach kids what it takes to be an elite athletes. She also made an appearance at the CK SportsXpo this summer, taking time to speak with kids and sign autographs. Broad’s parents are incredibly proud of their daughter, noting that Madison’s turning point came with Kyle Pinsonneault, a coach with the Chatham ‘Y’ Sharks. When it comes to those she’d like to thank, Pinsonneault is at the top of Madisson’s list. “He’s been by my side every step of the way – even if he wasn’t coaching. He’s putting so much of his life on the pool deck for me and the rest of my team. He’s gotten me where I am today by pushing me mentally and physically in the pool every day.” Whether it’s in her DNA, her coaches, her dedication to the sport, or a combination of it all, Madisson Broad is a force to be reckoned with, and athlete making Chatham-Kent proud every time she hits the water.

fromthesidelines Life Transitions Burial and Cremation Service Inc. “A New Approach to an Old Undertaking” Article by SportsXpress, Photo credit Melissa Doyle Having worked in the funeral industry for 18 years, James MacNeil has helped many families through the funeral process. Overwhelmingly, he saw the need to offer an alternative to the traditional funeral home model. That is why he and his wife Lee-Ann launched Life Transitions Burial and Cremation Service Inc. in 2016 – a fully licensed independent Ontario Funeral Service Provider. Life Transitions is owned and operated by James and Lee-Ann MacNeil, with a revolutionary business model: coordinating funerals and offering families a wider scope of opportunity to honour their loves ones. They do this by partnering with others in the community

that can offer the services associated with Funerals and Celebrations of Life. Because of these partnerships, there are reduced overhead costs incurred, and they are able to offer personalized services at very reasonable rates. James and Lee-Ann arrange all the necessary details of documentation, transportation, location, staffing, and the personal touches each family incorporates. Outside of the traditional funeral home constructs, Life Transitions is able to thoughtfully help you choose a location and service that will best honour your loved one. You may choose to host a celebration of life in your place of worship, or a community hall, a garden, park, beach, gallery,

museum or wherever your family feels most comfortable. Many people choose to preplan their funerals, to make an incredibly difficult time a little easier for their loved ones. James and Lee-Ann are happy to meet with you to set the plans. They work hard to make the process, easy, convenient and cost effective, and take pride in saving people 20%-50% of funeral costs while providing exceptional service. With over 40 years of combined service experience, Life Transitions is reliable and affordable, something their A rating on the Better Business Bureau confirms.

“James and Lee-Ann worked hard to honour our loved one’s life, coordinating several different locations to honour her family’s funeral traditions. They were sensitive and very helpful in an exceedingly difficult time. We wouldn’t have known where to start; they provided a service that honoured her life, and took care of us in the process as well! ”

360 degrees of health

Rick Zavitz, President

Chatham Kent Ready Mix Inc. Dresden Ready Mix Ltd.

Article by SportsXpress

Drs. Brian Sides and Sarah Ytsma are excited to announce a new partnership with Performance 360 “From a health standpoint, we feel it’s essential to have access to multiple avenues of health to reach maximum potential. Performance 360 is the only place around that offers that sort of environment and we are excited to be a part of it.”, says Dr. Sides. Previously known as Performance Fitness and Training, Dave Miller and his staff have been offering fitness services to Chatham for twenty five years. When he started to get feedback that members were looking for something new and modern, Miller followed through. He partnered with Matrix Equipment and redid the entire facility. “All of our cardio equipment has digital screens, (Netflix, Youtube etc) and a virtual trainer. The equipment also tracks your workout, we also launched our own mobile app that is available to all of our members.” To make sure every new member is starting off on the right foot, they meet with a personal trainer where they do a 3D body scan, movement screening and talk about health history, injury

prevention and personal fitness goals. The member and fitness adviser then devise a health plan. Members can choose to work on their health plan on their own, or with one of eight full time certified personal trainers. Performance 360 offers ‘more than a workout for your membership’. Bar stools pull up to the front desk and there is a seating area for those who want to stick around to hang out. A juice bar offers smoothies and healthy food options. “I wanted people to do a 180 in their life but have 360 degrees of health and wellness brought to them.” says Miller Drs. Brian Sides and Sarah Ytsma are a big part of that goal, “Brian and Sarah are a good fit for us. They’re young and innovative and they were all in right from the start.” Wilson is excited to know health professionals he can refer his clients to; plans for the Sides-Ytsma team to host health classes are already in the works. All part of their goal to be the most innovative health facility in Chatham. They seem to be off to a great start!

SIDEWINDER L-TX DX Making the right call Photo credit Jay McNaughton Nick Fisher When you come out to watch a local ball game in Chatham-Kent, you likely don’t watch the umpire. And you certainly don’t think that the umpire is an elitelevel official who is highly regarded by Baseball Canada and Softball Canada. But if you have been to a game where Justin Van Horn has officiated, that is what you saw. For Van Horn, umpiring baseball and fastpitch softball has been a passion since he first put on the uniform when he was 12.

For Van Horn, umpiring baseball and fastpitch softball has been a passion since he first put on the uniform when he was 12. Starting out at the minor levels of house league in Blenheim, Van Horn not only worked hard to learn the rules of the game, positioning and mechanics, but also how to deal with the coaches, players, and parents. This allowed him to progress and work his way up to travel games, and adult competitive games. Van Horn was recently invited to officiate at the International Softball Congress World Tournament that took place in Kitchener from August 10-18. He was one of 19 officials from across Canada and the US to be selected to umpire the best Men’s fastpitch players in the world. This was Van Horn’s first opportunity to work this prestigious

event, but this is far from the first highprofile event he was worked. Van Horn has also umpired at five Softball Canada championships, and five Baseball Canada championships, making him a rarity in the world of officiating to excel at two different sports. For Justin Van Horn, officiating has given him many great experiences. He has travelled all over Canada, and has made many friends, both nationally, as well as internationally. He wants his message to others about officiating to be simple and clear: “Umpiring baseball and softball have given me a chance to travel to many places. It has given my confidence and pride in myself. And I want others in Chatham-Kent to know that they too can have these opportunities.” And while he is skilled enough to officiate with other elite-level umpires, as president of the Kent District Umpires’ Association, Van Horn enjoys mentoring younger umpires and instructing at umpire clinics all over the Southwestern Ontario region each spring. The Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse program continues to grow thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Article by SportsXpress, Photo credit Wallaceburg Lacrosse The organization was able to run thirteen free camps last season and seven this year, introducing many kids to the sport of Lacrosse. The camps included The King of the Courts, winter camps in Chatham and Wallaceburg, including ones specifically for Tyke/Novice girls, Paperweight Walpole Summer Camp, King of the Courts, Fitness and Nutrition through Athlete’s Fuel for the Junior team, and Mental Health Awareness for all the minor teams. A portion of the grant also helped purchase more equipment which in turn, kept registration costs down, making it affordable for families. The King of the Courts Camp was started in 2015 to introduce the sport to nonplayers. After its launch, many students returned to play the following year. Wallaceburg Lacrosse is one of the few organizations in Ontario that continues to grow every year. Chris Dawson VP of the organization is thankful for the grant, noting the benefits are easily tangible. “ We have won the OLA Development Award twice in the last four years. We have multiples teams that have won gold or silver Provincial Championships. And

most importantly, our referees, coaches and volunteers are increasingly more and more former players that have been exposed to everything we have been trying to teach, and can now pass it along.” A division that has seen particular growth in the past few years is girl’s lacrosse. This season the Girls Intermediate team made it all the way to provincials, and then won! Three teams not only made it to Provincials this year, but brought home a trophy. For first time Bantam Head Coach Bronson Bea, the win was a highlight, but so was bonding with his team and watching them develop over the course of the season. “Zone 7 is very strong and although our record wasn’t the best, we were competitive all summer. When we beat Sarnia (A division, top 16 in Ontario), we were confident that we could win the provincial title. It wasn’t easy for Tanner (Cole) and I as first year coaches, but battling all summer and bonding with this

group is something we will never forget.” The bond of teammates was something Girls Intermediate coaches encouraged as well. Coach Jason Fox says, “Right from the start of the season our entire staff preached how important it was to be a family and to grow as a team. Along with hard work and dedication, the girls were able to see early in the year the type of potential we would have if everyone bought in the Family First Mentality.” When a head injury resulted in the loss of their goalie, several players offered to stand in net, never having played goalie before. The team rallied behind them, playing more defensively and offensively than ever before. The team won the Zone championships and moved on to the Provincial B Championships. After losing a difficult game to London, the rest of

the tournament was “do or die”. The girls responded with enough wins to get them to the final against St. Catherine where they won 5 to 2. “It truly was a season for the ages; teams like this with this kind of chemistry rarely come together for a season as perfect as this. Sixteen wins, four losses and four ties as a season record is testament to the hard work, dedication and Family First Mentality of all the players, coaches and parents.” says Fox. Intermediate Boys Head Coach, Lee Salisbury also had a team that battled hard. Shut down by several ‘A’ teams, Coach Salisbury continued to encourage his team to keep their heads up, “I let them know how excited they should be about our upcoming season because only lost to the #2 team in the league by two goals in our first tournament”. Their turning point came when Emily VanDamme, previous Red Devils goalie

joined the team, an ‘absolute wall in the net’, she was the piece of the puzzle that changed the season and led them to win the championship. Passionate about the power of Lacrosse, Salisbury is excited about what the win will do for Wallaceburg Lacrosse, “Twenty five years ago, I played on the last team to win an ‘A’ championship in Wallaceburg. Obviously winning the same title twenty-five years later was huge – but what was bigger than that was the excitement around Intermediate Lacrosse in our town. Getting kids interested in playing at the Intermediate level will be huge for our minor system and our Junior B team!”.

Vice President Chris Dawson is excited about the future, and applying for grants that will allow them to grow their program past Wallaceburg. The Trillium Grant has truly grown the organization and set it up to continue to expand Lacrosse in Chatham-Kent – and who doesn’t want that?

Red Devils play at Worlds Article by SportsXpress, Photo cedit Wallaceburg Red Devils The Wallaceburg Red Devils had an impressive season wins 16 wins and only 4 losses. They scored the most goals and gave up the least in Red Devils history. With such a successful season, the Red Devils were gearing up for a long playoff season when a disappointing second round against Elora ended their playoff run. Elora went on to win the Canadian Championships. For some of the players, the disappointment came with mixed emotions. Kyle Dawson, Tyler Brown, Cecil Jacobs, Marshall Poles and Owen Martin were then selected to play at the World Lacrosse Championships in Saskatoon, some only hours after the loss. Dawson represented Team Canada, who won gold at the tournament and the rest, Team Iriquois, who won silver. “It was tough losing to Elora after preparing all year for a long playoff run. We had a great team and this was something we had been looking forward to for years, so losing was a bit of a disappointment. But... it’s always exciting to be asked to represent your country on a world stage. As tough as it was to lose out of the playoffs… it was a nice surprise that boosted my spirits and kept me playing lacrosse into August.” says Dawson.

It’s a once in a lifetime experience to play in an NLL arena – add new equipment, reporters, live streamed games and getting to sit in an NLL locker room – it was a dream come true for the players. VP Chris Dawson believes it’s a testament to the minor Wallaceburg Lacrosse program and its impact up to the Junior B level. So is Lacrosse alive and well in Canada? Kyle thinks Lacrosse is growing, and hopes that it will continue to gain momentum. “I think everyone involved in lacrosse does a great job growing the game – especially in Wallaceburg. In the ten years I have played, the game has gotten a lot larger. This World Junior Tournament helps put lacrosse out there on a world level and allows it to thrive.”

The retention rate of the Wallaceburg Lacrosse organization is something they are proud of (read pg 9-10 for more info). Head Coach of the Red Devils Jamie Knight requires each of his players to invest in the minor program, because they were once a little five year old idolizing the Junior B players. The idea keeps minor players coming back year after year, working towards making the Red Devils someday. One thing is certain – Lacrosse is certainly well in Wallaceburg!

Duds Zachary Thompson – drive Dover Your Work Wear Specialist! 519-355-1201 in the face of adversity Article by SportsXpress Photo credit Scott Thompson

Two years ago Zachary Thompson had hip pain that just wouldn’t go away. With the assistance of his local Chiropractor Dr. Ken Gagner, Zach’s family was referred to specialists in London where doctors diagnosed him with Juvenile Arthritis. As an athlete, the arthritis was limiting, causing him to miss out on many of his hockey games and eventually pulling out of sports altogether The Arthritis Society was in contact offering support in multiple ways almost immediately, resulting in Zach receiving a medication called Humera. The support from the Arthritis Society and the medication has changed Zach’s life forever. Today Zach enjoys all the sports and activities he did before his diagnosis, pain free thanks to biweekly injections. An all around athlete, Zach is looking forward to playing hockey again this season with the South Kent Lightning, since the competitive golf season has come to an end. While he started playing golf with his dad on Father’s Day every year at 5 years old, it was only two years ago that he and his father started playing regularly. The father-son time paid off, with Zach carding a final round 43 at Seven Lakes Golf Course in Lasalle to win the 11-12

Year Old Boy’s Division Championship and first place among all 9-hole golfers 12 years and under in the Essex/Kent Jr. Hughes Golf tour in August. This spring Zach decided he wanted to do something to give back to the people who had been so helpful to him. Together with his father Scott, they started ‘Zacos Amigoz’, an organization to raise awareness and funds for Juvenile Arthritis research. Their 1st Annual Family Scramble for Juvenile Arthritis at the Links of Kent in July raised over $1,600 for the Arthritis Society. Both Zach and Scott are already planning for next year, hoping to grow the tournament and give back in bigger ways. As for his golf game, Zach is planning to join the 18-hole tour next year where he will have 10 dates on the calendar and even tougher competition. His goal is to shoot even par on a round, something he’s working on every day. Given his drive in the face of challenges, we have no doubt he’ll accomplish that!
