IT’S LONDON FASHION WEEK, 1998. BRIDGET HALL AND JODIE KIDD ARE WITHIN PINCHING DISTANCE. MIDRIFFS ARE BARED AND BEJEWELED, SHOES ARE PLATFORMED, AND VIVIENNE WESTWOOD’S NOW CLASSIC PIRATE THEMED COLLECTION ‘TIED TO THE MAST’ JUST EXPLODED ONTO THE MAIN CATWALK. Backstage the models are gossiping about Geri leaving the Spice Girls and Monica Lewinsky. On the radio Natalie Imbruglia is Torn, TLC “…don’t want No Scrubs” and the number one song is by some unknown teenager called Britney Spears. My hair is cotton candy pink so intense it has been known to cause cavities on sight. My days seem to last at least 25 hours and my only problem is finding an outfit for every one of them. Fast forward to today and I’m still shoehorning 25 hours into 24, but who isn’t? It’s that sneaky extra hour that we’re devoting our 25/7 issue of The Daily Us to. We’ve also created the ultimate range for all you 25/7 girls out there, channelling the very best of that late nineties scene: wild animal prints, polka dots and plaids are charmed into submission by sleek pencil skirts and mod styling. Winter’s all wrapped up with Aztec blankets, chunky knits and patched denim and pink’s not just the blush of my ‘do’, it’s the colour of the season, dominating everything from our perfect wool coat, candy pink nails to blooming grungy florals. It’s the perfect mesh of then and now and I’m so excited to share it with you.

BECOME SURGICALLY ATTACHED TO YOUR SMARTPHONE. Your smartphone is the telescope that allows you to stalk the fashion world from afar, 25/7. Blogs like Little Black Book, Style Paws, Gary Pepper Vintage or Harper and Harley and websites like Pedestrian TV and WGSN give you sneaky glimpses of upcoming trends. All right there in your little hand.

2

SHOW OFF YOUR FASHION SCENTS. 7

LEAVE THE HIGH, HIGH HEELS AT HOME. Make sure you can walk in your shoes before you leave the house. There is nothing less stylish than the awkward blister-limp or worse going barefoot, your heels in hand.

GOOD NAILS. Sorry Hello Kitty, cutesy nails are over. This season’s look is all about strong blocks of colour in bold, asymmetrical shapes. We’re loving Nail It in Backstage Burgundy and Matte Black.

TWEET ETIQUETTE.

3

Don’t be afraid to tweet your fashion heroes, just make sure you’re interesting, polite and remember that your tweets should be as well chosen as your profile pic. Don’t be the desperate fan tragically re-tweeting every word. Kirstie Clements isn’t going to suddenly follow you because you favourited and retweeted her post about a yummy bagel.

4

A GREAT JACKET. Choosing a great coat should be like choosing a boyfriend. You want something that fits perfectly but isn’t restrictive, looks good both daytime and night, and compliments all your outfits.

MASTER THE AIR KISS. To avoid make up mishaps or awkward acquaintance embraces, employ the time-old fashion greeting of The Air Kiss. As you hurtle towards your target, coo their name enthusiastically to warm up the faux hello. Lean right and briefly graze the fullest part of your cheek against theirs at the same time as making a kiss sound. Not too loud, no one likes a slobbery ‘Schmack’ in their ear. Repeat on their left cheek if desired, and continue the process up to four times when in France or when trying to give the impression you just got back from ‘Europe’. 6

S T Y L E

8

SHOW YOUR ANIMAL INSTINCTS. When it comes to animal print, it’s better to go for a purr than a roar. Elevate a black or grey outfit with a bold print coat, shoes or bag. One way to ease yourself into wearing these wild prints without getting all Jumanji is with a lightweight leopard scarf or clutch bag.

9

C O E X I S T.

THE THREE POINT BAG CHECK: PHONE, LIPSTICK, KEYS.

KNOW WHO TO FOLLOW. Social media and fashion go together like sugar and people with taste buds. Perfectly, however considerate moderation is needed. Following the right people gives you a balanced and interesting feed. On Instagram go for a little Miroslava Duma @miraduma and Taylor Tomasi Hill @ttomasihill. Over on Twitter we recommend Candice Lake @CandiceLake along with Elle Magazine’s sass talkin’ Alyx Gorman @Gormania.

11 HAIR; UN-DONE BUT DONE. When you’re busy, the only hair that lasts all day is the hair that was half done to begin with. Get the look by scrunching hair while air drying then blow out with an ionic blow-dryer on high heat with round brush. Dust off with Sportsgirl Dry Shampoo when you need a re-vamp. For styling, try out a chunky loose braid. T W E N T Y

REGRAMMING.

DO YOUR FASHION HOMEWORK. Training montage! Take some serious study time and memorize labels-to-names, names-to-faces, faces-to-blogs. Know who the head designers of your favorite labels are and how they got started. The only way to stay fashion fit is to do your homework.

14

19

BE POLITE. Sometimes it’s kind of tempting to act like one of the too-cool-for-JaRule fashion set, but this will get you nowhere in the long run. Good manners are the best accessory and they cost nothing.

BLUFF YOUR WAY ONTO THE AFTER PARTY GUEST LIST. Act confident, wear hot shoes. No one will believe you if you’re a jittering mess when asked your name. Tell the doorperson that you ‘could be on multiple lists’ but you RSVP’d last minute so you’re not sure which one would be best to check. If worst comes to worst tell them the PR girl who sent you the invite was named Sophie. There’s always, always a Sophie.

THE LIP SITCH.

BE GENUINE. The way to most people’s heart is by compliment. However ‘I love your… um…vest / banana clip / scrunchie’ doesn’t only sound like you’ve never met another human before, it sounds fake. Find a feature you genuinely like. Nothing stops people talking to you faster than being a phoney.

16

22

Fashion and music are the best looking couple since Kate Moss and Johnny Depp broke up. Plug in and tune out. Own the pavement like it’s your own private runway.

The quickest way to update your face-look status – A loud lip.

18 THE SOUNDTRACK.

Credit where credit’s due! Most people don’t mind a little photo poaching if it gets them a few more followers but never try and pass it off as your own, the Internet always knows and fashion bloggers have looong memories.

MEETING AND GREETING FASHION ROYALTY.

WITH A MICRO NAP. Missing out isn’t an option. Before the long day turns into a long night you need to Stop, Revive and Survive. Slap a few slices of cucumber on your eyes and get horizontal for a 20 minute disco nap and you’ll only have yourself to thank when your #fashun #afterparty selfies hit Instagram looking #sofresh #nofilter.

21

SUNGLASSES.

SUNGLASSES.

Sunglasses are the ultimate WOO (weapon of outfit observation) for fashion watching. This season we’re loving Sportsgirl’s oversized shades.

Once you’ve schmoozed your way onto the A list this season, don’t feel intimidated to introduce yourself to someone you admire, just make sure you’ve got something to say. Compliment without gushing and plan before you approach, otherwise you’ll end up just staring at them like they’re a talking cat.

25

17

THE PERFECT FASHION SELFIE. There are four golden rules to The Fashion Selfie: You always need your camera to be a little bit higher than your face, it captures your outfit (and bod!) at it’s best. Know your angle – chances are your left side is cuter than your right. Know the lighting – direct overhead lights are horribly eye-bag-inducing. Finally, no duck face. Ever.

CARRY YOUR BAG LIKE A PRO. The most important thing to remember when carrying a bag is to stand as if you are not carrying anything at all. If it’s a backpack or shoulder bag, allow it to hang off of you. Don’t clutch your clutch. The key word here is effortless, you shouldn’t look like you’re hiding behind your accessory, or cradling a cat.

If Paris is the City Of Light then Mexico City is the city of colour. And music. And margaritas. Since it’s also home to Chihuahuas, tacos and Salma Hayek, there’s a lot to like about the giant capital – especially its emerging international fashion status.

CROSS KEYRING $7.95

Start your day checking out the high-end fashion in Polanco and work your way over to the super cool chicas sashaying around Colonia Roma.

You know a city has a serious dedication to fashion when the parliament has its own official stylist. Start your 25 hours in the stylish Danish capital with breakfast of Grød (fancy porridge) at Grød (trendy café in Nørrebro). Then take a short bike-ride to Guldbergsgade and check out the gorgeous boutiques like Adelié which is owned by Denmark’s famous blogger of the same name and tiny gem Tikkie.

Lunch and serious shopping should be done in central Copenhagen. Tired of hiding in the skirts of her more sartorially famous neighbours, Singapore has put on her big-girl heels and is cutting her way through the international scene like nobodies’ business. For 25 hours in this fast-paced metropolis you’re going to need a lot of stamina. MICHELLE JANK NEW YORK STYLIST FOR SPORTSGIRL 25/7 MAGAZINE FOLLOW ME: @MICHELLE_JANK GEORGIA POINTED HEEL $59.95

New York weather calls for a serious collection of coats.

3PM

SINCE 2002, INTERNATIONALLY ADORED DESIGNER AND STYLIST MICHELLE JANK HAS WORKED HER STYLING MAGIC ON SOME OF SPORTSGIRL’S BEST COLLECTIONS. THE PERTH NATIVE’S WORK HAS BEEN FEATURED IN ITALIAN, FRENCH, BRITISH AND US VOGUE AND WORN BY FAMOUS BABES LIKE CATE BLANCHETT, NAOMI WATTS, NICOLE KIDMAN, TONI COLETTE, CHLOE SEVIGNY AND NAOMI CAMPBELL. WOWSERS. HERE WE WALK A BUSY 25 HOURS IN HER SHOES. “ Hi, I’m Michelle! Welcome to my day and my shoes. I am an earlybird so I’m usually up by 7am, then tea and my morning meditation. Breakfast is kale, banana and coconut smoothie. It looks rather bad, tastes a lot better than it looks, and keeps me going. I love to eat healthy, it helps me to get through my busy day. Mornings are my favourite time of the day. I do my best work first thing when my phone is not ringing constantly and I am not racing on a mad mission around the city. The west village is very quiet before 11am. I think it takes a little while for NY to wake up which was a surprise to discover, apparently ‘the city that never sleeps’ is actually ‘the city that sleeps in’. Cab into the studio for range review and some editing with my clients. A little coffee and music to accompany me up town. I always listen to something while I work, and love a little Karen Dalton, Bill Callahan, some jazz or Souls of Mischief. Music is one of my big inspirations in life. This morning I am preparing for fashion week and a new campaign. New York is amazing for inspiration, I’m constantly taking mental images of things I see and like along the way. This city and it’s people are so inspiring. It’s often hard to translate everything you see on the run, but right now I’m obsessed with the ‘My Script Memo’ app. I can sketch in looks on the run, make notes on photos and translate my sometimes illegible handwriting into text. Technology is my friend. What did people even do before the Internet? Lunch is a take out affair either from a vegan sushi place in chelsea or from one of my favourite cafés in Brooklyn; 5 Leaves where my friend Ken Addington is the chef – the salads are genius. Most afternoons are spent out of the studio. Styling is 20% inspiration, 80% running around the city to source product, new ideas and locations. This afternoon I’m taking a coffee break to chat NYFW show plans with my favourite NY up and coming designers, Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin from TOME in their bustling, light-filled studio in Chelsea.

BRAT GUSSET CHUNKY BOOT $89.95

Then I tackle the all-important, almost-impossible task of selecting the looks from our shoot that you’ll see in this very mag. Sportsgirl was one of my first clients when I started styling, what feels like a million (thirteen) years ago. Working on their ever evolving collections always feels new and exciting for me. I’ve loved styling the 25/7 fashion story, the collection this season feels very New York. It’s so nice to be able to send a little snapshot of my day in this crazy, beautiful city home to you!” – MICHELLE S H O P
