I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING – WHAT? THIS GIRL NOW CALLS HERSELF A FASHION AUTHORITY? PROOF THERE IS HOPE FOR ANYONE. These days I’ve swapped the cask wine for the bottled variety, the sneakers for heels and I now spend my Friday nights anywhere from laneway bars to house parties to live gigs. But if there is anything that over a decade of partying has taught me it’s that when it comes to getting dressed, you should always go with your gut instinct, wear what makes you feel good and sometimes – just sometimes – mum is right. Whether you’re warming up for a celebration of seriously epic proportions or just want to hit the town in your favourite sequins and go dancing, this issue of The Daily Us is all about setting the tone for one spectacular night out. Our mag has gone digital for the first time ever (#kindofabigdeal) so download our amazing new app so you

can check out all the exciting extras - believe me, there are plenty! In this issue we also let local blogger babes Jess Tran and Emma Lucey steal us away for a night of tacos and selfies, plus we catch up with the unfairly talented muso Phebe Starr to talk all things getting ready. I also lift the lid on how to get (appropriately) dressed for a whole line-up of different occasions and we’ve even the morning after the night before sorted, with some pretty tasty juice recipes. In true Sportsgirl style, we basically just partied til we couldn’t party anymore in order to bring you our authentic and ultimate guide to getting ready (it’s a tough gig right?). So go on and take a look, be sure to download our new mobile app so you can scan the pages for extra awesomeness (including a free music download) and let’s see where the night takes us.

HOW TO NOT SCREW UP &

G E T

D R E S S E D R I G H T

EVER HAD THAT DREAM WHERE YOU TURN UP TO WORK NAKED? OR SHAKE WITH FEAR WHENEVER YOU RECEIVE AN INVITATION TO A COSTUME PARTY BECAUSE A LITTLE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD IS TELLING YOU THAT YOU’LL ROCK UP TO YOUR MATE’S “Y-THEMED” BIRTHDAY BASH AND BE THE ONLY. ONE. IN. COSTUME? I KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE. I’VE BEEN THERE, IN THE GIANT YELLOW FLUFFY BIRD OUTFIT, AND HAVE LIVED THROUGH IT ALL TO TELL THE TALE (TAIL?). SO THIS IS AN ARTICLE ABOUT NOT SCREWING UP AND WILL HOPEFULLY HELP YOU NAIL YOUR LOOK EACH AND EVERY TIME, NO MATTER WHAT THE OCCASION. WORDS SAM SIDNEY

Girls Night Out

Revenge Dressing

“It’s a Wednesday night baby and I’m alive!” said Hannah Horvath, one of my fave TV heroines and expert on being a 20-something girl. It may not be a Wednesday but a girls’ night out is possibly the crème de le crème of nights outs. There’s the planning, the outfit selecting – which is usually the time that my hallway transforms into a runway – the warm-up tunes, the texting, the hair up or down dilemma, and all this while shamelessly posting selfies on Facebook. The greatest thing about these kinds of nights, besides that you get to hang with your girlfriends and whip out your best dance moves is that it’s your wardrobe’s time to shine. Say yes to your fanciest heels, most glam faux furs and anything that sparkles.

The only thing that’s worse than running into an ex, is running into an ex when you’re wearing your trackies, ugg boots and have not brushed your teeth and/or hair. So make the most of any advanced warning you may be lucky enough to have, and look so damn happy that you could actually implode with smugness at any given moment – even if you don’t feel that way on the inside. The outfit itself depends on the social situation but I’d recommend anything that shows off your best and favourite assets. If you know what your ex’s favourite assets are, then even better. Milk it.

After Work Drinks

The Family Gathering The thing about family gatherings is that just like clockwork, they always seem to happen. Christmas, anniversaries, christenings, pet birthdays… right? So in saying that, it might not be the most ideal time to pull out your strapless leather dress or your false eyelashes. Instead, you should take this as your chance to earn major brownie points with the family elders and wear something sweet and sensible. This does not need to mean ‘frumpy’. Rock a floral print that’ll make Nan proud. Wear your prettiest day dress. Go smart casual, a bit like a job interview, except for a job you’ve already won in life – probably with just as many annoying questions.

The Rivals Party An event hosted by a fashion nemesis should always be viewed as a totally awesome opportunity to step it up both sartorially and socially. It’s your chance to bring your A-game and leave everyone you encounter in a trail of your (totally flawless) dust. In times like these, I like to turn to something a little showy, yet effortless. A “you have no idea that these beachy waves took eight hours, six hair straightener burns and five Youtube tutorials to achieve!” type of effortless. On my list of do’s; anything bang-on trend (like a cute pinafore), snazzy prints, comfy shoes (no one wants to be the girl holding her heels by the end of the night) and red lipstick – time to make a statement!

TGIF. Congratulations, you’ve made it through another long week of work and you haven’t lost your job, hooray!* You’re probably itching to let off a bit of steam and you definitely deserve that Pina Colada. Just need to quickly change into something more “you” and then we can hit up the bar with the work gang. Wait. Hold up a second there. What exactly is the right attire for after work drinks? There is nothing worse than shaming yourself in front of the whole workplace (yes, just think back to your last Chrissy party) so when it comes to work functions, be sensible. Go hard with the envy inducing handbags, the killer heels and the TDF makeup and make your existing wardrobe “work harder” (geddit?) for you with conversation-starting statement accessories.

All in all, what you wear doesn’t actually define you as a person but getting it right (or more importantly, not entirely wrong!) sure can help you navigate a hectic and sometimes tricky social calendar. And remember, if ever in doubt, just ask your most honest friend – we all have one of those.

*Sorry if you did lose your job this week.

HER SMILE IS CONTAGIOUS AND SHE LIGHTS UP THE ROOM WITH HER ENTHUSIASM AND OPENNESS, BOTH METAPHORICALLY AND LITERALLY. “My outfits take up so much space in my closet because they’ve got lights on them or some big sparkly thing attached!” she laughs. “Sometimes I get this creative rush where I think ‘I just have to wear this’ and then nothing else will satisfy me,” she says as we discuss her favourite stage outfits. “This is how I end up going through my closet and cutting up dresses and adding little bits and pieces here and there.”

Despite her “all or nothing” approach to getting ready for a gig, Phebe also notes that when it comes to life off the road, her style is a lot more relaxed. “Day to day I like looking natural and wearing good staple items, black leather-look pants with a white t-shirt,” she says. “Black is my go-to. I’m also really into having dark eyebrows and I’m big on the eyeliner.” So how would she describe the signature Phebe Starr look? “My style is comfortable but individual. I like quirky fun stuff, but also beautiful and feminine,” she muses. “I really feel I’ve embraced the type of clothes I wear as I get older.” And what styling advice would she impart to others? “When you feel most comfortable with yourself, you look the best.”

IN A LITTLE MEXICAN CANTINA TUCKED AWAY IN SURRY HILLS, FOUR GIRLS ARE DOING A RATHER IMPRESSIVE JOB OF POLISHING OFF A ROUND OF PULLED PORK TACOS AND SOME “CRAZY DELICIOUS” NACHOS. THEY’RE ALSO DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB OF TURNING HEADS EVERYWHERE THEY GO, PARTLY DUE TO THE FACT THEY’RE ALL TOTAL STUNNERS AND PARTLY TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THEY ALL HAVE THAT ENERGY THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO RUN OVER, INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND BECOME THEIR NEW BEST FRIEND (PLEASE?).

It’s a Friday night in Sydney and we’re tagging along with two of the country’s hottest bloggers, Jess Tran and Emma Lucey. They met through the blogosphere several years back (“way before blogging was the done thing”) and have been pals ever since. Also along for the ride tonight are Alex and Shinta, friends of Jess’s, who have just noticed a tree made out of bras in the corner of the bar and are laughing feverishly. “I’m loving the wave of South American themed bars and restaurants popping up everywhere,” enthuses Jess over a mouthful of her drink of choice, bourbon and coke. “It’s such a relaxed and casual vibe. I mean, this place has parrot fairy lights, come on!”

do they decide what to wear? Both bloggers agree that being comfortable is first and foremost. Emma says it all depends on her mood and that she can be a bit of a style chameleon while for Jess, it’s all about being able to move freely and hit the dance floor. “It usually involves a fun little skirt,” she says.

We talk about what their idea of the perfect night out is. “Hanging around in the sunshine in the afternoon, grabbing dinner and then hitting some chill bars in the city wearing my comfiest heels and having nothing on my mind apart from a good time!” says Emma. “Getting ready for a night out is always better when it’s done with friends,” she adds. “Drink in one hand, eyeliner in the other!” “My ideal well, dream, night out would be hanging out with the guys from A$AP Rocky,” muses Jess. “I saw them perform live recently and it was amazing. Bopping around to hip hop and old-school RNB jams with your best girl friends – what else do you need, except perhaps following it up with gelati and a McDonalds hash brown?” And how

The girls are distracted for a moment by Shinta and Alex who are posing and taking a selfie.

“A KINDLE IS MY SECRET WEAPON. I LOVE IT FOR THE LONG TRAIN TRIP HOME AFTER A NIGHT OUT.”

“Guilty as charged,” observes Jess. “Not that I can speak. Being a blogger, the most embarrassing thing has to be when I’m just standing on my lonesome taking an Instagram outfit shot and people are just like, ‘What. An. Idiot.’” After another round of tacos and just before the girls start collecting themselves, ready to move on to the next destination, I ask if they have any other tips or tricks they can share when it comes to going out. “Don’t make any early morning commitments for the next day,” is Emma’s advice, while Jess’s is a little more left-of-centre. “A Kindle,” she says. “A Kindle is my secret weapon. I love it for the long train trip home after a night out. My bag tipped out while I was clubbing once and some indignant drunk girl turned to me and said, “who on earth brings a Kindle clubbing?” FOLLOW JESS: JessLovesFred.com FOLLOW EMMA: SpinDizzyFall.blogspot.com
