2011 NEWS

Greetings From Stillwater Another year has passed, and two more of our longtime faculty members have retired. After 32 years of distinguished service Professor Gary Meek decided it was time to enjoy a little more free time at his home here in Stillwater. During his time at OSU, Gary was a master teacher and Bud Lacy one of the top scholars in the area School of Accounting Head and Anadarko Chair of international accounting. Also retiring this year after devoting 33 years of outstanding service was Professor Maryanne Mowen, who decided to ride off with her husband John (who also retired from the Marketing Department after 35 years) into the sunset of New Mexico. Maryanne was a wonderful colleague and will always be remembered for all the service she devoted to the School of Accounting, the Spears School of Business, and the entire university. To learn more about both of these individuals, see the story on page 4. Although we’ll never be able to replace all the qualities that Gary and Maryanne gave us, we were fortunate to hire two outstanding new faculty members. Brad Blaylock has his Ph.D. from the University of Washington and his BS and M.S. from Brigham Young University. His teaching and research interests are in the area of federal taxation. Shortly after joining us he was notified that one of his working papers from the time he was a doctoral student was accepted for publication in The Accounting Review. What a great way to start his academic career. Also joining us this fall as a Clinical Assistant Professor is Alyssa Vowell. She earned her bachelor’s degree and MBA from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and has five years of experience in public accounting, and three years in the tax department of Chesapeake Energy (page 2). Our faculty continues to be very active in publishing in the top accounting journals (page 16). During the last year we had 17 publications in the top accounting and finance journals. Don Herrmann and Tony Kang received the Spear’s School Richard D. Poole Research Excellence Award for publication in the toptier journals, and Charlotte Wright received the OSU Regent’s 2011 • School of Accounting News • 1 spears.okstate.edu/accounting

Distinguished Research Award for a distinguished record of past and continuing excellence in research. While doing their research, our faculty didn’t forget about the other parts of their jobs as university professors. Bob Cornell was elected to the OSU Faculty Council, Don Herrmann coordinates our Ph.D. program, Carol Johnson coordinates our M.S. program and the SOA scholarship program, Sandeep Nabar takes care of our Speakers Series, Chad Stefaniak is the faculty advisor for Beta Alpha Psi, and Monika Turek oversees the Gateway Exam. All that is in addition to the work each faculty member does on departmental, college, and university committees. That’s pretty impressive! Our Advisory Board membership continues to grow. Last year we reported that we were one of the largest and most active boards in the country, and we’ve added 11 members this year. See the listing of all our Board members, including new members, on page 8. We are sincerely grateful for all the time that these alumni and friends devote to the Board’s activities. Their advice and support has been instrumental in helping us achieve our goals. If you know someone that might be interested in joining the Board please email us at osu-soa@okstate.edu and we’ll follow-up with them. (continued on page 2)

Greetings From Stillwater Scholarships continue to play a significant role in the success of our students. During the year we gave out over $275,000 in scholarships (page 12) and the M.S. program continues to attract the best and the brightest (page 13). Don Herrmann continues to be successful in attracting the best minds to join our Ph.D. program. We’ve added two new students this year, including our second Accounting Doctoral Scholar (page 14). The CPA review course continues to have a remarkable effect on our examination pass rates. This year we are one of only 12 schools in the United States that can claim to be among the nation’s best among first-time candidates in the rankings for students passing the exam both with and without advanced degrees. And this year one of our student received the Elijah Watts Sells Award for one of the top 10 scores in the country! (page 7) Finally, here’s an interesting story that is not included in other parts of the newsletter. Although some students may not have responded, here is a list of accounting alums, their current positions, and the

Please let us know if we’ve missed any other “legacies!” As you can tell, lots of good things are going on in the School of Accounting. This is going to be a fantastic year, and it would not be possible without the generosity of our alumni and friends!

Retiring Faculty Members Gary Meek retired June 1 after nearly 32 years of service. During his time at OSU, Meek developed a reputation for being a master Oscar S. Gellein/Deloitte teacher and for & Touche Professor Ph.D. being one of the University of Washington top scholars in the area of international accounting. He focused on developing international accounting as a recognized area of interest in the School of Accounting, and he said teaching international accounting was his favorite part of working at OSU. As a result of his efforts, OSU has developed a strong reputation for international accounting not only in the United States but all over the world. “Dr. Meek is a distinguished teacher at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels,” said Don Herrmann, former head of OSU’s School of Accounting and one of Meek’s former doctoral students. “Though accounting classes are considered

Maryanne Mowen retired on July 5 after 33 years of service. During her time at OSU, Mowen taught numerous accounting courses to more Associate Professor CMA, Ph.D. than 12,000 Arizona State University undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students. Her courses varied from cost and managerial accounting to behavioral decision-making, and she has written accounting textbooks that have been translated into multiple languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Albanian and Indonesian. Mowen has conducted extensive studies on judgment and decision-making, using her research as an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts to real-world problems. Her work has been published in well-

some of the most difficult courses in the Spears School, Dr. Meek was one of the most highly-rated teachers in the college and many students’ favorite teacher in the accounting department. He learns students names, is extremely organized, and really cares about his students.” Meek has received numerous awards for his contributions to accounting over the years. In 2006, Meek received the Greiner Undergraduate Teaching Award, and he received the Outstanding Service Award from the International Accounting Section in 2009. Meek’s research focused on financial reporting in a multinational context, and he has written textbooks and numerous journal articles on the topic. His research has been widely cited by scholars. “My time at OSU has been very good,” Meek said. “For me, it’s been a great place to have a career. I had the freedom to teach the courses I wanted to teach, to do the research I wanted to conduct, and to help make a difference in students’ lives. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

respected accounting journals and has been cited by researchers all over the world. “Maryanne has been in the office next to me for the past 15 years,” said L. Lee Manzer, a professor of marketing in the Spears School. “She is very kind and incredibly patient with her students. I’m really going to miss her.” Just as Mowen was quick to praise her colleagues, they were eager to return the favor. Carol Johnson, an associate professor of accounting and the M.S. coordinator for the Spears School, said Mowen has been a great asset to the School of Accounting, the Spears School and OSU. “Maryanne will of course be missed,” Johnson said. “Even so, I am excited for her and John because I know they’re about to embark on a wonderful new episode of their lives that will be a great adventure.”

Meek earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in business administration from Texas Christian University, and he received his doctoral degree in accounting from the University of Washington. Except for a one-year sabbatical at the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1986, Meek has spent his entire teaching career in the Spears School. On May 5, 2011, Meek established the Gary K. Meek Scholarship Fund for Spears School accounting majors. “Dr. Meek is a perfect example of a professor who integrates his success in scholarship into the classroom,” Herrmann said. “His love for international accounting is evident to all. He will be missed for his contributions to accounting scholarship, his great teaching ability and, most of all, his encouraging and supportive role as a colleague in the School of Accounting.”

to the successful re-accreditation effort for the Spears School and School of Accounting in 2008. Her dedication and persistance was the reason we got it done,” said Lacy. “We need to have an annual ‘Maryanne Mowen Service Award’ as a tribute to all that she had done for us,” he added. Mowen’s husband, John, also retired from the Spears School this summer. They moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they plan to go hiking and spend time volunteering in their community. Even in retirement, though, Maryanne Mowen said she plans to continue teaching classes online and exploring new, creative ways of teaching online courses.

“Maryanne was one of those people who was always willing to help in a time of need,” said Bud Lacy. “One of her greatest accomplishments was the effort she devoted 4 • 2011 • School of Accounting News

One of Only Twelve in the Nation

OSU ranks among best in CPA passing rate

The OSU School of Accounting is in select company when it comes to having some of the highest student passing rates on the CPA exam.

It is one of only 12 schools in the United States that can claim to be among the nation’s best among first-time candidates in the rankings of those students passing the exam both with and without advanced degrees.

OSU is No. 18 in both categories: schools with the highest passing rate among first-time candidates both with advanced degrees and without advanced degrees, according to NASBA’s Candidate Performance on the Uniform CPA Examination—2010 Edition. “That’s really not surprising,” said Bud Lacy, head of the School of Accounting. “Our students have worked hard and we just continue to see the fruits of their labor. I’m expecting it to be even higher next year!”

Gold Medal recipients, Lauren Gorman (top) and Anne-Marie Lelkes; Silver Medal recipient, Dawn Kruckeberg

There are a number of reasons for OSU students to be among the nation’s best at passing the CPA exam, including the School of Accounting’s excellent faculty, a rigorous

accounting curriculum, and the generosity of their alumni whose financial assistance helps cover the cost of the Becker materials. OSU is one of the few universities to offer a CPA review course, which began in 2008 as a graduate-level elective course for MS students. Students who have taken the course achieved an average pass rate of 85 percent on the parts of the CPA exam they have attempted. And since 2008, OSU students have won five of nine Gold medals and seven out of 12 Silver medals awarded by the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants. In 2010, Anne-Marie Lelkes and Lauren Gorman picked up the Gold, while Julie Toben, Dawn Kruckeberg, Julie Southerland and Josh Neil took the Silver. In January 2011, School of Accounting alumnus Jessie Wagner of Jenks, Okla., was honored with the Elijah Watt Sells Award from the American Jessie Wagner, 2011 Institute of Elijah Watt Sells Award Recipient Certified Public Accountants. Wagner received one of the ten highest cumulative scores on all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam in 2009. “In 2009, more than 93,000 individuals took the exam,” said Lacy, “Though there were several tied scores and 15 candidates actually received the award, you can do the math if you want to, but let me tell you that getting one of the 10 highest scores is a really big deal.”

“Jessie is the first student from Oklahoma to receive this award, and we are thrilled. It’s amazing to have any student earn such an honor and I’m just glad to be a part of such a helpful, lifechanging experience,” Lacy said. Wagner passed the CPA exam on her first attempt; the national average pass rate for first-time undergraduate candidates is approximately 10 percent. She received a 93 percent on one section of the exam and earned a 99 percent on the other three. “I’m very honored to receive this award. It reflects positively on both OSU and me. I would definitely say that my education at OSU was the foundation for my success,” said Wagner, now works in the tax department at the Ernst & Young LLP office in Tulsa.

Scholarships As of the end of April 2011, the School of Accounting had 726 declared accounting majors—an 11% increase over late April 2010, when we had 654 majors. During the 2010-11 academic year, scholarships were given to 258 students or 35.5% of our majors. These payments totaled $276,227 and gave each student an average scholarship per semester of about $535. In addition, significant additional scholarship support was provided for SOA students by professional organizations (e.g., the OSCPA, the Tulsa Chapter of the OSCPA, and the Oklahoma City Chapter of the FEI).

A college education is an expensive undertaking these days. Our tuition and fee rates at OSU are the lowest in the Big 12, but it’s still a lot of money. Undertaking that fifth year of school that is necessary for CPA qualification is daunting for our students and their families, and the support provided by alumni and friends of their time and funds makes all the difference in the world!

Workshops The School of Accounting frequently invites scholars from other schools to present their research as part of our ongoing workshop series. We hosted four workshop speakers last year. On Sept. 24, 2010, Angela Gore of George Washington University presented “Golden Handshakes for Bureaucrats? Ex-ante Severance Contracts in the Municipal Sector.” Several developments in the past few years have caused us to make adjustments to the scholarship formula used to determine how much a student receives. Results from a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers reveal that accounting majors are now the No. 1 in-demand major on college campuses. This development tends to steer more students into the accounting field and creates more demand for financial support. At the same time, the state of the economy can dampen the supply of donor funds and the Boone Pickens endowed scholarship funds has diverted donor contributions away from the discretionary funds that are used to fund most of our scholarships.

Steven Smith of the University of Illinois presented “The Influence of Sensitivity Disclosures on Investors’ Judgments” on Oct. 29, 2010. Bill Mayew of Duke University presented “Analyzing Speech to Detect Financial Misreporting” on Nov. 19, 2010. The final workshop of the season was on Feb. 4, 2011 by Christopher Agoglia of University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who presented “When Do Audit Managers Prefer Staff to Underreport Time?”

Master’s Program Our Master’s program is growing! During the 2010-11 academic year, we graduated 63 masters students — a 53% increase over the previous year’s graduation of 41 students. We currently have 123 M.S. students — 63 in our PPA program and 60 in our 4/1 program. The average GMAT score for our master’s students is 580, and the median is also 580. A number of programs help to make the OSU master’s program highly attractive to prospective students: • CPA Review Most students are now scheduled so that they take the CPA review course during the last semester of their program and actually sit for the exam during the same semester. This program allows our students to graduate with their CPA exam already complete. The pass rates on the exam parts are in the neighborhood of 85%. • Internship Students are allowed to do an internship during any semester. Those who intern during the spring semester can work during the first 8 weeks of the semester and then return to campus to complete other courses during the remainder of the semester. This arrangement allows them to do an internship without being set back a semester on the path to graduation. • Practicum Practitioners in public accounting, corporate accounting, small business, and government participate in a practicum class during the summer semester that allows students to see the accounting world from the perspective of the folks in the trenches who are really doing the sophisticated accounting work. This class is highly popular with our students and much appreciated. • Scholarships Generous scholarships provided by donors to the SOA help to offset the cost of that fifth year of school. All of these benefits are a direct result of help from our alumni, recruiters, and Advisory Board. They help reimburse CPA review costs, provide internship opportunities, bring their time and talents to the practicum, and provide generous scholarship funds. None of what we’re doing could happen without their help! We offer our sincere thanks for their generosity! Carol Johnson has taken over the job of coordinating the M.S. program. If you have questions, suggestions, or need help, please contact her at (405) 744-7627 or carol.johnson@okstate.edu.

Ph.D. Program update The doctoral program in accounting at Oklahoma State University continues on the upswing The doctoral accounting program is designed to be completed in four years beyond a M.S. degree in accounting. Students in the program take two years of coursework while receiving additional training in fields like economics, finance, and statistics. They also take an accounting research seminar each semester during their first two years. In the summer following completion of coursework, students study for comprehensive exams covering the material learned during their coursework. In the final two years of the program, students develop and defend a major research project (their dissertation) that does more than just summarize prior research, it contributes new knowledge to the field of accounting. Joohyung Ha completed her dissertation this summer and accepted a position with Loyola University. Three doctoral students, Brooke Beyer, Eric Rapley, and Michael Wolfe, successfully passed comprehensive exams this summer and are now hard at work developing their dissertations. Michael Barnes, Jimmy Downes, and Lauren Gorman completed their first year of coursework and recently did an excellent job presenting their summer research papers. Besides research and coursework, Jimmy Downes ran in the Boston Marathon last spring and Lauren Gorman was a Gold Medal Award winner on the CPA exam.

over 65 of the largest firms and over 48 state CPA societies joined together to fund the Accounting Doctoral Scholars (ADS) Program, committing financial support of over $17 million. All applicants are required to be U.S. citizens and have a minimum of three years experience in public accounting. Additional information about the Accounting Doctoral Scholar program can be found at www.adsphd.org. If you have an interest in pursuing a doctorate in accounting, please feel free to contact our Ph.D. program coordinator, Professor Don Herrmann.

Accounting Doctoral Scholars Michael Barnes and Nathan Berglund

We are also especially pleased to have enrolled an AICPA Accounting Doctoral Scholar each of the past two years. Michael Barnes was our first ADS Scholar coming from the KPMG office in Dallas last fall. Nathan Berglund is our second ADS Scholar coming from Ernst and Young in Minneapolis this fall. This is a prestigious program of top accounting candidates designed in response to the growing shortage of academically–qualified university accounting faculty members, especially those with recent experience in the practice of auditing and tax. Accounting Research Conference Annual convention brings in top accounting scholars On March 25, 2011, the School of Accounting hosted the annual accounting research conference. Five eminent scholars from around the country presented cutting-edge research. Dr. Gerald Lobo from the University of Houston was the first presenter, and his research topic was “The impact of SFAS133 on income smoothing by banks through loan loss provisions.” Robert Yu, doctoral student of accounting, moderated the session. The second speaker was Dr. Morton Pincus from the University of California. He presented a research paper entitled “Pricing of book-tax differences: Evidence from short arbitrage.” Michael Wolfe, a third-year doctoral student at OSU, moderated this session. After lunch, there were three more presentations by

Dr. David Ziebart (University of Kentucky), who presented “Evidence regarding the usefulness of accounting in managers’ bonus contracts,” Erv Black (Brigham Young University), who presented “The effects of executive compensation and auditor effort on firms’ pro forma reporting decisions,” and Carol Ann Frost (University of North Texas), whose topic was “Characteristics and information value of credit watches.” These sessions were also moderated by our doctoral students, Brook Beyer, Eric Rapley and Mingming Feng. The conference was well attended by faculty members and doctoral students from OSU and neighboring universities, and it was followed by a reception at Eskimo Joe’s.

Seniors of Significance The Seniors of Significance Award presented by the OSU Alumni Association recognizes students for excellence in scholarship, leadership, and community service and for bringing distinction to OSU. The 2010–2011 Seniors of Significance represent approximately 1 percent of the graduating class. They were honored at a public banquet on Dec. 2, 2010, at the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center. Of the 41 students chosen for this distinction, seven were accounting students! They are Amalia Deines, Jessica DeLong, Katie Fuchs, Blair Kirkpatrick, Allison Lyons, David McKellips, and Johnna Lynn Rushin.
