Career Services

The Spears School has a long-standing tradition of offering innovative programs and services to help you reach your educational and professional goals. A recent addition to serve students in the Spears School, the Business Student Success Center (BSSC), houses Student Academic Services and Career Services, along with college recruiting and a Business Writing Lab. The BSSC will help you actively manage your degree program, thus improving your chances of completing your degree on time and ensuring you are equipped to secure a rewarding position upon graduation.

The Spears School has its own dedicated career professionals who work in conjunction with OSU Career Services to encourage the career development of business students. Career Consultants serve as a resource for deciding a major, career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies. You can meet with the consultants individually, as well as enjoy participating in a variety of training workshops, etiquette seminars, networking events, and career fairs to build your professional skills and connect with potential employers for internships or full-time roles.

Student Academic Services Professional academic advisors provide guidance to maximize your academic success and stay on track within the various degree programs in the Spears School. Each member of the advising team specializes in advising specific majors so you have a solid knowledge base that allows for the development of appropriate plans of study and can blend the academic requirements of your degree with your professional aspirations.

Student Organizations spears.okstate.edu/undergraduate/orgs There are more than 20 dedicated student organizations associated with the Spears School of Business. Many are related to specific majors, some are honors organizations, while others are business fraternities open to all majors. Each club has a designated faculty member serving as an advisor, as well as elected student officers who help shape the direction of the organization. Many Spears School student organizations have received state and national recognition for their performance and activities, both on campus and in external competitions. Joining student organizations will lead to a more enjoyable and successful collegiate experience.

Beyond the classroom Living and Learning Community Networking Through the required involvement in community service projects and floor programs, you will have the opportunity to make many connections with your peers in the Living and Learning Community. These connections may begin as social interactions, but can lead to future business connections. Academic support program Spears School community residents receive academic support, including regular interaction with two, full-time faculty advisors, who can provide information about campus services. Resources include writing centers, math labs, accounting tutors and other student support systems. Spears School community residents who are underclassmen can receive tutoring from the upperclass residents. In addition, the Spears School provides free wireless printing to community residents. Freshmen learning community Freshmen Spears School community residents enroll in a linked Freshmen Orientation course (BADM 1111). In addition to helping you will have the opportunity build relationships with other students, the freshman learning community provides ample opportunity for informal study groups to develop among students living in the Spears School community. Faculty interaction As a participant in either of the Spears School Living and Learning Communities you’ll be encouraged to attend regular lectures and speaking engagements provided by the Spears School professors and community business leaders. There are no additional fees associated with speaking events. The Spears School community hosts an annual event honoring the Spears School dean, administration, faculty, staff and community residents. The event is a wonderful networking opportunity and an evening of food, fun and friends.

Eastin Center for Talent Development spears.okstate.edu/eastin The goals of the Eastin Center for Talent Development are to organize and promote existing opportunities and create activities to achieve career readiness. The Center is also responsible for inspiring participation from the moment you step on campus and for recognizing your achievements when you successfully complete the program. Recognition Every student who attains a specific level in the program will be formally recognized by the Eastin Center for Talent Development. Employers will be made aware of the value of this accomplishment. Eastin Fellows Each year the Eastin Center will recognize a group of approximately 10 extremely high achievers who will be recognized as Eastin Fellows. This achievement is unique because the honor is not earned from an application—it is earned through an arduous journey involving practical activities and real world experiences. Eastin Fellows will receive a scholarship for a travel program and experience exclusive access to business leaders in New York, Chicago, Dallas and elsewhere.

Each year, the Spears School grants more than 350 individual awards for a total of nearly $1 million in scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students. These numbers continue to grow as donors recognize the value of providing assistance to college students. A scholarship committee within the Spears School selects scholarship recipients according to donor wishes regarding factors such as academic success, career direction, financial need, effective leadership, service, and other criteria.

For years, the Spears School has introduced students to different cultures, experiences and business views through a wide array of study abroad and travel programs.

The Spears School of Business is proud to offer the Spears Scholar Leaders Program to a limited number of exceptional students each year. Admission into the Spears Scholar Leaders Program is highly selective and competitive. Selection is based on a balance of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated leadership abilities.

Participate in professional development activities, such as the Tulsa Business Forums and the Oklahoma City Executive Management Briefings hosted by the Center for Executive and Professional Development in the Spears School. Visit corporations to network and better understand dynamics of businesses. Receive mentoring from an upper-level business student. Serve as an officer in the Freshmen Business Student Leaders student organization (freshmen year only). Engage in team-building and social events with peers who share the same academic priorities. Research, plan and create budgets for an educational business travel program; then actively lead the program with your cohort group. Learn from like-minded peers and mentors about developing leadership skills. Interact with faculty and business leaders in the community. Receive a scholarship each year for four years of continuous enrollment as an undergraduate, totaling $10,000 (includes travel program stipend).

Incoming freshmen requirements: minimum ACT score of 25, minimum 3.2 high school GPA and a desire to participate in Scholar Leaders Program activities.

The Cagle Center: Study Abroad and Travel The Cagle Center: Study Abroad and Travel in the Spears School provides a number of short-term programs open to both OSU students and those from other institutions.
