A message from the Chairman and President of The Spartanburg County Foundation

ur theme for the 2005 Annual Report, is “Your Spartanburg, Your Community Foundation: weaving the fabric of the community.” We now know, more than ever, that a successful community foundation must open itself up to its community, engaging its donors and convening its volunteers while giving them a sense of ownership in how the foundation is spending its resources. We also know that the future for community foundations lies in establishing a leadership role in the community as an organization that you would want to support because of what the foundation is doing for the community. We would like to think that, if the foundation takes care of its community, its community will take care of the foundation. The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Core Funding Mission relates to education, arts and culture, historic preservation, health, social services, and recreation and youth activities. In the pages to follow, through photographs, donor stories and grant stories, we have attempted to give you insights into how our community foundation is helping to weave the fabric of the greater Spartanburg community. Community foundations across the country play a special role in their communities: providing grant funding to address issues, solving problems, taking advantage of opportunities and helping donors fulfill their own charitable giving goals. They are also called upon to provide leadership in multiple ways. As we reflect on the 2005 year, we are reminded that a community foundation’s success is highly dependent not only on the generosity of its donors, but also on the effectiveness of the many other non-profits and dedicated leaders throughout its community. We are privileged to witness this every day in our work with our community’s outstanding non-profit organizations and with our dedicated civic leaders committed to improving education, health care, social services, the arts, physical and economic development and green space. For 62 years, The Spartanburg County Foundation has used its financial resources, convening skills, and role as a community leader to enhance the quality of life in Spartanburg in all of these areas. We hope this Annual Report will give you a greater appreciation of the many ways in which this Foundation is touching the lives of countless people through our grant-making and leadership efforts on key community issues. We ask that you join us in celebrating the “quiet renaissance” that is taking place throughout our neighborhoods, our downtown and our region. We ask that you pause and think about what is new, exciting and different about Spartanburg today from just a short time ago. The Year in Review Development v Our 2005 year reflected our total assets growing by $7.1 million to $77,436,050. During this past year we opened 30 new fund relationships bringing our total now under management to 653. We also experienced another positive year in our investment performance as our funds realized an 11.5 percent return further enabling our donors to expand their charitable pursuits. We now have experienced a 61 percent compounded investment growth over the last three years.

Capacity Building v Our Strengthening

Voices Initiative focuses on increasing the community’s capacity to address issues that deeply impact families throughout Spartanburg. It uses a four-pronged approach to address capacity building at the foundation level, the community level, the organizational level and the individual level. One of the most innovative strategies of this initiative is the Grassroots Leadership Development Institute, which focuses on capacity building at the individual level. Through this Institute, participants’ voices are strengthened as they become better equipped to be agents of change in their community. More than 40 individuals have completed this program since its inception in 2004.

Community Partnerships v In February 2005, The Spartanburg County Foundation and United Way of the Piedmont with generous support from 13 local funders (see sidebar) released Strategic Spartanburg: Community Indicators VI, which examines the many human services and social issues affecting Spartanburg County. These issues directly impact the growth, health and quality of life for all citizens in our community. In the sixth edition, we brought together the public, private and nonprofit sectors to establish community-wide goals to benchmark Spartanburg’s progress and collaborate and focus resources against community needs. This project could not have been accomplished without the financial support of our many community partners who enthusiastically offered their support and saw the potential to really make a difference in the community.

Leadership v Last year, the Foundation was in a position to facilitate the reconstruction of Main Street’s downtown city block between Hall Street and Alabama Street, as this new development would certainly benefit the economic growth of our downtown district. This called for the sale of our building, and we have been busy finalizing our plans to locate to our new offices on Kennedy Street. We are happy to inform you that we are well underway at this time. Our new offices will be more spacious and inviting to facilitate community meetings, enabling us to do a better job of convening our many constituents and their charitable pursuits.

The 2005 year saw changes on the Board of Trustees as well. Mrs. Betty J. Montgomery retired from her Trusteeship in December 2005. Betty represented the family legacy of our Founder, Walter S. Montgomery, Sr., and during her seven years of service, she showed great dedication, loyalty and passion for the traditions and values that Mr. Montgomery instilled in this organization. Her knowledge and experience proved to be invaluable to this Board and staff during her time of service and her commitment to this Foundation was indeed appreciated. In December the Board elected our new Trustee, Ms. Jennifer C. Evins, who began her seven-year Trusteeship in January 2006. Jennifer’s community involvement and leadership skills bring great resources to the Board of Trustees, and we look forward to her service.

Tips for Applying for Grants Tax exempt, nonprofit organizations in Spartanburg County may apply for grants from The Spartanburg County Foundation to fund projects that provide innovative responses to recognized community needs and do not duplicate other efforts.

We encourage proposals that:  Enhance the internal stability and growth of a receiving organization.  Have a plan for continued funding from other sources.  Are likely to attract support from matching fund arrangements.

The Foundation believes that community-building is essential to our work; therefore, preference will be given to projects that:  Affect broad segments of the community.  Demonstrate good planning in light of overall community needs.  Are collaborative in nature.  Promote volunteer participation.

Letter of Inquiry Process The first step in applying for a grant is to submit a letter of inquiry. In two pages or less, we request that you address the following:  Mission of your organization; describe the quality and integrity of your organization, document your accomplishments and community support.  The amount you are requesting from The Spartanburg County Foundation.  Proposed project, including the community need your project addresses and how your project will impact the quality of life of the people who you hope to serve, include the geographical area your program will serve.  Describe the outcomes you hope to achieve through this project; include sustainability plans.  Describe how you will evaluate your project. Planned Giving Legacy Society

any of our patrons have chosen to establish a Planned Giving relationship with The Spartanburg County Foundation over the years, which would be funded from their estates, making a difference in the good causes that they support and believe in for many years into the future. These patrons have experienced the joy of giving and the satisfaction of making a difference. We realize that there are many choices today as to where you can place your charitable gifts and The Spartanburg County Foundation appreciates the many patrons who have chosen us to be the steward for their future philanthropic funds. Planned giving encompasses a variety of ways that gifts can be made to The Spartanburg County Foundation from accumulated resources. It usually involves financial or estate planning and is not necessarily reserved for only the wealthy. The Caroline Virginia Pulliam Mitochondrial Disease Fund Giving people a way to help by weaving in the area of health What can we do? What can we do? It’s a refrain that Donna and Norman Pulliam have heard for three years — since their daughter, Caroline Virginia Pulliam, began having medical problems soon after birth and was later diagnosed with mitochondrial disease. Now friends, family and even complete strangers touched by Caroline’s story have a way to help.

aroline’s similarity to a healthy 3-year-old ends with regular naptimes and a love of cartoons. She eats via a feeding tube that goes directly into her intestines. She takes 10 different medicines each day. She doesn’t walk, crawl or climb on the furniture. Because the common cold can kill a child with mitochondrial disease, Caroline rarely goes to birthday parties, play groups or public places. She’s particularly isolated during the winter months when the flu and other viruses are most prevalent. Mitochondrial diseases result from failures of the mitochondria, which are specialized compartments present in every cell of the body except red blood cells. Mitochondria create more than 90 percent of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, cell injury and death follow. While symptoms and severity are variable from case to case, individuals diagnosed with mitochondrial disease as children rarely live to see their 20th birthday. Caroline is

considered to be on the severe end of the disease spectrum because of the early presentation and complexity of her symptoms. While Donna and Norman were coming to terms with Caroline’s diagnosis, caring for her and trying to find ways to support mitochondrial disease research, their friends, including Emma and Andy Harrill and Nicole and Matthew Myers, were thinking of ways they could help the Pulliams. According to Matthew, the more their friends talked, the bigger their ideas grew. Matthew called John Dargan at The Spartanburg Country Foundation to discuss options, and the Caroline Virginia Pulliam Mitochondrial Disease Fund was established in June 2005. “Our goal is to raise $1 million and awareness about mitochondrial disease,” says Matthew. “Today, there’s no known treatment or cure.” The majority of the interest generated through the fund will go to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation — “the only player in town in raising research and awareness,” says Donna. The fund, however, allows for the flexibility of funding other research pertaining to the disease. An initial letter from The Spartanburg County Foundation announcing the fund raised more than $100,000. The Pulliam’s friends will add to the principal each spring by holding a Caroline’s On My Mind Weekend featuring a golf tournament, run/walk, barbecue, band party and silent auction. According to Matthew, more than 70 people generously gave of their time and talents to ensure the success of the event during its first year. “Now when people ask what they can do for Caroline and the Pulliam family, I tell them to support this fund to make sure that other families don’t have to go through this,” says Emma. “We want to show the Pulliam family how much we care about them and Caroline, but we also want to do our part to find a cure. Getting this diagnosis should not be a death sentence.” For Caroline and her parents, however, a cure probably won’t come in time. “How do you grieve with your good friends?” says Matthew. “There’s no way to grieve, no way to help, no way to do anything to make this better. That’s why we’ve seen such an enormous amount of support for this fund. It gives people something that they can do to help.” 2005 Annual Report •

The Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Foundation Scholarship Fund Honoring Bobby Chapman’s legacy of competition and service by weaving in the area of education The Country Club of Spartanburg is home to one of the country’s top five junior golf tournaments. Last year some of the best young golfers in the country were invited to participate, but the tournament isn’t just a proving ground for future professional golfers, it’s a fundraiser that each year helps send deserving high school seniors to college.

obert H. “Bobby” Chapman, Jr. — the name is synonymous with both textiles and golf. During his lifetime, he loved both and spent much of his time in cotton mills, boardrooms and on golf courses. “When my father passed away in 1994, a number of citizens in our community wanted to do something to honor him,” says Robert H. “Rob” Chapman, III. According to Doug Smith, speaker pro tem of the South Carolina House of Representatives, Charlie Rountree (considered by many the father of junior golf in South Carolina) suggested

starting a junior golf tournament that would benefit both Spartanburg and South Carolina in Chapman’s memory. The proceeds from that first tournament were used to start the Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Foundation and a new fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation devoted to promoting junior golf in South Carolina and helping young people throughout the Southeast pursue a bachelor’s degree. The Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational is held each year in September and is funded through local sponsorships and individual contributions. Tournament alumni include Jonathan Byrd, Lucas Glover, Carl Peterson, Bill Haas and D. J. Trahan, as well as almost 30 other current professional golfers. Byrd and Glover have both won on the PGA tour. “Lucas Glover, who won the Bobby Chapman Invitational twice, played in The Masters this year. That tells you the caliber of player invited to compete in the tournament,” says Chapman. Thanks to the continued success of the tournament, the Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Foundation now awards two scholarships each year to rising first-year college students — one for $5,000 and the other for $2,500. Although priority is given to junior golfers who demonstrate financial need, the student recipients may or may not be golfers. More important to the selection process is the student’s character, leadership capacity and academic promise. While the tournament is for junior male golfers, scholarships are awarded to both male and female students. In fact, according to Chapman, the first recipient of a Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Scholarship was a young lady. The Spartanburg County Foundation helps the scholarship committee of the Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Foundation select each year’s recipients. Michael Barfield, a second year medical student at Duke University, is typical of the students who have benefited from the scholarship. “I am continually amazed at the lessons I learned while playing junior golf,” Barfield wrote in a letter to The Spartanburg County Foundation. “The teamwork as well as the individual responsibility inherent in playing what I still consider to be the greatest game will definitely come into sharper focus as I begin to participate in the care of patients.” In addition to awarding two competitive scholarships through The Spartanburg County Foundation, the Bobby Chapman Junior Golf Foundation also sends $10,000 each year to the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation to support scholarships for junior golfers throughout the state. Smith thinks Bobby Chapman would be proud. “Bobby Chapman was a great golfer,” says Smith. “He won the club championship at the Country Club of Spartanburg nine times and served as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Association. He was a leader in the textile industry and in the community. Back Country Revolutionary Heritage Project Fund Preserving Spartanburg’s proud heritage by weaving in the area of historic preservation Musket cracks, cannon blasts, smoke, screams, the chaos of rag-clad colonials firing at lines of Red Coats… it’s the stuff of books, movies and reenactments, and much of it happened right here in Spartanburg County.

pstate South Carolina residents might be surprised to discover that they drive by major Revolutionary battle sites each day on their way to work or school. What originally was known as the Spartanburg district — now Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, Laurens and York counties — was the site of 22 Revolutionary War battles. “We have more Revolutionary battle sites in this part of the country than anywhere else other than in Charleston and Berkeley, SC, so it would be a terrible thing not to preserve them,” says Dr. George Fields, former president of Spartanburg Methodist College and founder of the Back Country Revolutionary Heritage Project. “People are amazed when they discover that a place that they pass every day was the site of an important battle.” By partnering with The Spartanburg County Foundation and The Palmetto Conservation Foundation, the Back Country Revolutionary Heritage Project is trying to preserve these sites and educate the public about their historical significance. Organized in 1998, the project seeks to promote the awareness of Revolutionary heritage. That means conducting tours, workshops and symposiums as well as providing speakers to local civic organizations. “It does no good to preserve a site if you don’t get people there so they can learn about the history,” says Fields. In addition, the project develops preservation plans for the most important sites, like Cedar Spring, Earle’s Ford, Musgrove Mill and Blackstock on the Tyger River in Cross Anchor, SC. “We often use the fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation as seed money to do the research to make sure we’re purchasing the right piece of property,” says Fields. “The Foundation also helped with planning for a wayside park at Earle’s Ford and provided a $10,000 grant to help start the Musgrove Mill preservation project, which was part of the formation of the Musgrove State Historic Park — the first new South Carolina state park created in more than 20 years.” According to Fields, another contribution of The Spartanburg County Foundation has been their guidance in starting a local heritage project. “There were no handbooks, no clear guidance on how to recover a local heritage and start to preserve these sites,” says Fields. “We began working with John Dargan in 1997, and with his help and the help of the Foundation, we actually learned how to start the Back Country Revolutionary Heritage Project.”

New Day, Inc. of Spartanburg Endowment Fund Offering open arms and open spaces by weaving in the area of social services When the New Day Clubhouse, a psychiatric rehabilitation facility in Spartanburg, was located on Converse Street in an old three-story home, everyone was welcome, but not everyone felt comfortable being there. Now, thanks to generous donors and an endowment fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation, New Day, Inc., has a new clubhouse with open arms and open spaces.

he more the merrier was not the case in the kitchen and dining room at New Day, Inc.’s old location. The kitchen could accommodate four, but it was still crowded. “Sixty-five percent of our members have been diagnosed with schizophrenia; they don’t feel comfortable in crowds and often isolate themselves,” says New Day Executive Director Jane Clemmer. “Individuals who felt cramped didn’t want to participate.” The industrial kitchen in the new clubhouse, once a church and day

care center, has 13 workstations where members cook and serve two meals five days a week. The new dining room has two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows and can seat 40-50 comfortably. The entire facility is accessible for people with disabilities and includes a snack bar, computer lab, library, administrative offices for members and staff, and ample common areas where members can work, write, read, draw or talk. The space and layout of the new clubhouse also makes it easier for the staff to work alongside members to perform core administrative, maintenance and food service duties. “For one of our members in our old location, it took 30 minutes and every bit of strength in his mind, body and soul just to walk through the door,” says Clemmer. “He now walks right in and even reads at house meetings. Once our members feel comfortable coming here, then they can transition to the mall, the grocery store, and the workplace.” Since 1993, The Spartanburg County Foundation has held and managed a special fund for the New Day Clubhouse. Initially, the interest from the fund was used strictly for emergencies. When New Day, Inc. of Spartanburg needed to expand, the fund at The Foundation was amended to allow the awards committee to access both the corpus and the interest to purchase and renovate a new facility. “The endowment fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation made getting this new building possible, and it’s our security blanket,” says Clemmer. “Our members know that they have the right to a place to come… the right to meaningful relationships… the right to meaningful work… and the right to a place to return if they need us. Our members need that safety net. They are our reason for sustaining services. Because of the fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation, we know that we’re always going to be here for them.”

Drive (or better yet walk) down East St. John Street, and at the corner of St. John and North Converse Street, you’ll see community funding at work. On an excavated site orange with Upstate clay, you’ll see rising cinder blocks and steel beams. Fast forward two years, and the clay will be replaced with manicured lawns accented with flowers and trees; the building skeleton will be a thriving arts center, and construction crews will be replaced with children and families experiencing the arts, sciences and history.

500-seat theater will sit at the heart of the new 86,000square-foot Chapman Cultural Center, set for completion in the fall of 2007. The Spartanburg Little Theatre, the Spartanburg Youth Theatre and the Spartanburg Repertory Company will call the theater home. Surrounding the theater will be a pair of two-story wings. The Spartanburg County Museum of Art, the Spartanburg County Regional Museum of History, the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, a box office, a gift shop and offices for The Arts Partnership will occupy the west wing, while the east will be filled with Ballet Spartanburg’s school, the Dance Center, art studios for the Museum of Art, offices for the Music Foundation of Spartanburg and the Spartanburg Science Center. “Spartanburg is really on the move these days, and one of the best investments that communities that want to look to the future can make is in the development of their cultural communities,” says Everett G. Powers, president of The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg. “The Chapman Cultural Center is important on a lot of different levels. A center for enrichment and entertainment will make a positive impact on our county’s economic development, community pride and education in the arts, sciences and history.”

According to Powers, cultural centers are vital to a community’s quality of life and the civic engagement of its citizens. The Arts Partnership has raised almost $36 million toward the completion of the Chapman Cultural Center with $33 million donated by gifts from citizens, foundations and businesses from every zip code in the county. More than $2.5 million is a result of Spartanburg city and county funding. “The Spartanburg Country Foundation has been involved from the beginning,” says Jennifer Evins, chairman of the Chapman Cultural Center Planning Committee and trustee of The Spartanburg County Foundation. “The Founders of The Spartanburg County Foundation had a vision to capitalize on the combined resources in our community to advance Spartanburg and its people. The Founders of The Arts Partnership had a similar vision. By working together to build this new cultural center, their shared vision will benefit not only the cultural community, but all of our citizens.” The Spartanburg County Foundation made a $1 million lead gift to the project well before The Arts Partnership began soliciting community support. “The Spartanburg County Foundation has been a major community leader for this project,” says Powers. “Both their gift and their early endorsement were very important to our fund-raising success.” In addition, the Foundation will manage the center’s $6 million permanent endowment established anonymously by four families in Spartanburg. According to Evins, the endowment fund will be used to ensure that the center’s condition always remains new. “Thanks to these four families and to the proven financial management of The Spartanburg County Foundation, we know that the Chapman Cultural Center will have the proper maintenance and repairs so that it will always be a jewel for Spartanburg,” says Evins. 2005 Annual Report • 17

The Cleveland Park Restoration Fund Improving the quality of life for children and families by weaving in the area of recreation and youth activities It took six million dollars, six years, and countless staff and volunteer hours, but Cleveland Park is now the jewel in the crown of Spartanburg’s Parks and Recreation Department.

n 1952, The Spartanburg County Foundation helped the Kiwanis Club bring the first miniature train to Cleveland Park. Then, the park was the flagship of the Spartanburg Parks and Recreation System. Families came to picnic and play. Couples came to walk or read. Schools brought groups of children for rides on the train. Through

the years, however, the park fell into disrepair, and the neighborhood changed. “When I returned to Spartanburg in 1996, I was concerned that our entire system would be judged by Cleveland Park,” says Jeff Caton, director of Parks and Recreation for Spartanburg County. “The park held so much nostalgia, but people were using the park’s deterioration and crime infestation as a rational for not wanting parks in their communities. We quickly realized that we couldn’t move out into the county with other facilities unless we got Cleveland Park in shape.”

On board with the restoration from the beginning was Julie Lowry, one of the co-founders of the PRIDE Taskforce. “Cyndi Beacham was working with the chamber, and she got together with Jeff to help get this restoration started. They asked Les McMillan and me to chair the project,” says Lowry. “I knew it would be great, and I knew it was important because of all of the good things that parks, trees and green spaces contribute to a community.” Raising funds and getting public support, however, were difficult. According to Lowry, County Council originally said “no” to supporting renovations. With additional research and neighborhood backing, however, the project began to creep forward. The next pitch to a different County Council was successful. “I’m very proud of the leaders of the community who stepped up to the plate and supported the park. We made lots of presentations, but it was all worth it,” says Lowry. The restored park now includes an event pavilion that is already booked every Saturday through 2006, a child-safe playground, picnic pavilions, two miniature trains (including the original that returned to Spartanburg last year), a train depot with restroom facilities, an island complete with gazebo and bridge to cross the lake, a lakeside plaza, and peaceful walking paths. According to Caton, the group sought The Spartanburg County Foundation’s support as the most efficient way to handle tax-deductible donations. “The Foundation also lent credibility to our efforts,” says Caton. With renovations almost complete, the Cleveland Park Restoration Fund is still paying for renovations and accepting payments on pledges. Additional funds held at The Spartanburg County Foundation will be used for future additions to the facility and for significant maintenance and repairs to ensure that Cleveland Park is maintained at the level it was constructed. “That was an important issue for donors,” says Caton. “People making contributions to the project wanted to make sure that the park would not return to its previous state. Funds at The Spartanburg County Foundation will ensure that. We’ve made a huge commitment and placed a high priority on full-time staffing, security and long-term maintenance. We have absolutely no intention of letting that park go back to the way it was. SOAR (Success Opportunity Achievement Reward) Academy SCF adds texture to the learning experience for children with disabilities by weaving in the area of education This summer, SOAR Academy will use a $14,956.89 grant from The Spartanburg County Foundation to create and equip a MultiSensory Room in their new school located on South Pine Street in Spartanburg. Both teachers and therapists will use the specially designed, sensory stimulating room to help their pre-school children learn about themselves and the world around them.

etsy and Jeff Randall have done a lot of praying since they started noticing that their daughter Micah (now 6) was developmentally delayed. After years of seeing pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, physical therapists and other specialists, they still don’t know why. Regardless of the whys, Micah continues to make progress largely because the entire family — Jeff, Betsy, Sydney (13) and Noah (3) — does whatever it takes to get Micah to the various after-school physical and occupational therapies she needs. This fall, however, things will become a lot easier for the Randall family, and other families like theirs, with the opening of the SOAR (Success Opportunity Achievement Reward) Academy in Spartanburg. “It’s an answer to prayer for us and other families like us,” says Jeff. “The public schools sometimes have a hard time serving so many different kids with different needs. At the SOAR Academy, we know Micah will get individual attention that focuses specifically on her needs.” Chapman Elementary School Special Education Teacher Teresa Loving is starting the school with the help of a core group of educators and parent volunteers. “I can’t wait until August to open the doors of SOAR Academy,” says Loving. “This will be a place where the whole family can receive well-rounded services. SOAR Academy will be a happy place for children with special needs to receive an education and therapies all in one location. The families also will be able to receive support and training they will use in the journey of having a child with special needs.” According to Betsy, SOAR will be the only pre-school in the area for children with special needs who are under the age of three. “The Spartanburg County Foundation was the first to recognize the need for this school in our community,” says Betsy. “The Multi-

Sensory Room will enhance the SOAR program. Piedmont Care, Inc. SCF sews support for the 3C’s approach to HIV/AIDS prevention by weaving in the area of health In 2005, The Spartanburg County Foundation awarded Piedmont Care, Inc., a $10,000 grant through the South Carolina Rural Communities Compassion Project to support their 3C’s Approach to Prevention: Clients, Community and Collaboration program. In addition to purchasing equipment (a laptop computer, projector and projection screen), the staff at Piedmont Care used the funds to support the development of their first website.

racey Jackson comes to work each day as executive director of Piedmont Care, Inc. (PCI), because her job matters. The time she spends at the office means prevention of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus )/AIDS. It means medical care for people who are already HIV positive. It means a reduction of the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease. “This job is a mission — a true calling,” says Jackson. Jackson and Piedmont Care share the same mission: to coordinate and provide medical, social and psychological services for individuals and families affected by or at risk for HIV/ AIDS. Letting the Spartanburg community know about that mission, however, has been a challenge. Focus group research revealed that the general public was unaware of Piedmont Care’s programs and mission. “Both the portable computer equipment and website will address the need to get the word out,” says Jackson. According to Jackson, since federal funding is not keeping pace with the AIDS epidemic, spreading the word with the use of local resources is more important than ever. “The Compassion Project grant has helped Piedmont Care share the word about HIV prevention through technology,” says Jackson. “Individuals may invite the health educator or another staff member to present to their group. Piedmont Care is also in the process of creating a bank of HIV/AIDS prevention, education and awareness PowerPoint presentations that can be shared with the community.” Jackson says that Piedmont Care’s relationship with The Spartanburg County Foundation did not begin with this project. “The Foundation has supported us through the years by providing money, leadership and training. For example, the Foundation gave start-up money for PCI to hire their first executive director – me. The Foundation links us to other organizations and opportunities. They are always willing to pass along educational information and potential grant information,” says Jackson. “Just this past year Piedmont Care was the featured nonprofit at the Community Thanksgiving Service, which was co-sponsored by The Spartanburg County Foundation and the faith community. Southside Unity in the Community SCF starts a pattern of community support for Spartanburg Park It Day by weaving in the area of recreation and youth activities

In 2005, The Spartanburg County Foundation awarded Southside Unity in the Community a $3,000 grant for Spartanburg Park It Day, an event to support the promotion of volunteerism and community pride in the Southside of Spartanburg.

he Southside community is planning to build a playground in one day. Making sure it happens, however, has taken dozens of days and countless community service hours. From recruiting volunteers and raising funds to planning children’s activities and coordinating the construction process, hundreds of volunteers have been involved with this project for the past year. Irwin Park, located on Seay Street and Irwin Avenue a block off of South Church Street, will be the site of the new playground. Wanda Cheeks, a grassroots leader who has lived in the Southside Community for the past 18 years, worked with Spartanburg Parks and Recreation as well as a team of more than 30 community leaders to develop the concept and plan Spartanburg Park It Day. “I grew up playing in this park when I was a little girl,” says Cheeks. “We had some fun times in this park, but I had to move away. When I returned the park was not gone but empty — no playground equipment at all. I knew we had to do something about that.” 24 • The Spartanburg County Foundation

When the Kaboom Company issued Southside Unity in the Community a challenge grant to construct the playground, the first step was getting County Council approval. According to Cheeks, The Spartanburg County Foundation heard about the project at the council meeting and asked to be a partner. “They came to me and said, ‘we would love to be a part of this team,’” says Cheeks. “We sent them a letter, and they were the first to donate matching money for the grant.” Cheeks says that The Spartanburg County Foundation also helped them secure other funding. In addition to Park It Day, Southside Unity in the Community sponsors Fun Fridays where children and families meet at local parks to learn how to interact with each other and play in healthy ways. Cheeks says that serving as a parent volunteer at Mary H. Wright Elementary School and Carver Junior High School, as well as other community service with Partners for Active Living and the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), sparked her interest in reducing childhood obesity. “We’re doing all of this for our kids,” says Cheeks. “We want them to be healthier, and an effective way to do this is by teaching our Southside community to get the resources it needs to make changes from the inside out. Ballet Spartanburg, Inc. SCF grant helps weave a tapestry of art in action by weaving in the area of arts and culture Ballet Spartanburg’s mission is to promote dance and dance appreciation by providing quality dance education, presentation and outreach. With outdated technology, however, Ballet Spartanburg’s outreach efforts were losing their effectiveness. Now, as a result of a $5,000 grant from The Spartanburg County Foundation, Ballet Spartanburg’s three-fold mission (education, presentation and outreach) is back in performance condition.

lose your eyes and visualize dramatic lighting, ethereal costumes, stirring music, grace, athleticism, precision, power and poise. Now look at the photos on these pages… see the difference? When describing ballet, words and phrases alone usually can’t capture the essence of the art. That’s why providing Ballet Spartanburg with the technology to create and show full-color movement, costumes and lighting is so important to helping the community understand and appreciate ballet. Last year, The Spartanburg County Foundation granted Ballet Spartanburg, Inc., $5,000 for a computer update project. Ballet Spartanburg then leveraged Foundation support to purchase two laptop computers, three desktop computers, a laser printer and software. “Because ballet is a visual, dynamic art, the previous computers that we had were not able to create marketing materials or make the DVDs or CDs we needed to show people in the community what we do,” says Gene Conroy, executive director of Ballet Spartanburg, Inc. “With the new equipment purchased through The Spartanburg County Foundation grant, we can make presentations to schools and civic organizations that will inspire excitement about ballet.” According to Conroy, the new equipment will also increase office efficiency by allowing Ballet Spartanburg to update and consolidate their databases. “We purchased a server as well so we will have better control of data, back ups and security,” says Conroy. “Before, we had several different older computers with bits of information. Now all of our membership information is stored in a central location.” Conroy, who moved to Spartanburg last August to join the Ballet Spartanburg staff, says that working with The Spartanburg County Foundation to make the project happen has been a straightforward process. “I guess you could say that The Spartanburg County Foundation is user friendly,” he says. Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network SCF joins local faith community to create a fabric of home for those without by weaving in the area of social services Faith communities, volunteers and social service agencies in Spartanburg have been pooling their resources to provide temporary housing for local homeless families. In 2005, The Spartanburg County Foundation joined the effort by awarding Spartanburg Interfaith Hospitality Network (SPIHN) a $10,000 grant to help hire and train its first director to guide the program in its mission to provide shelter, food and support services for families with nowhere else to turn. or Sharon, the month of June should have meant watching her children play in the backyard, grilling hamburgers with neighbors or sitting on the front porch swing relaxing after an evening of waiting tables. Instead it meant the anxiety of trying to find a place to live for her and her four children (ranging in age from 4-12). Sharon and her children had been living with her grandmother, who was now moving to New York. To make ends meet, Sharon worked two part-time jobs and had been on the waiting list for an apartment since February, along with 800 other families at the Spartanburg Housing Authority. Now, she had no place to go. Directed to SPIHN by the secretary at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Sharon adapted her family to SPIHN’s procedures and schedules. “Sharon and the kids prospered in SPIHN,” says SPIHN Director Patricia Fluharty. “Her major concern was getting enough money to not only plan an apartment but also to provide the upcoming school supplies for her children.” SPIHN congregations helped her do both. They purchased school supplies and a few new outfits of clothes for the children, and when the Spartanburg Housing Authority found a four-bedroom apartment for Sharon and her family, SPIHN congregations donated furniture, kitchen items and bedding. “On moving day, Sharon broke down because this was the first time since 2000 that she had her own place,” says Fluharty. “Sharon and her family are a SPIHN success story. Thanks to the generous hospitality of our congregations, they were able to get back on their feet to become self-sufficient, and according to Sharon, ‘to never be homeless again.’” Fluharty says that The Spartanburg County Foundation grant through the South Carolina Rural Communities Compassion Project has helped SPIHN become a more effective organization. “The guests are benefiting from the training that I have had as a result of The Spartanburg County Foundation grant,” says Fluharty. “The goal of SPIHN is not to ‘hand’ anything to homeless families, but to teach them the life skills that they need to be able to take care of themselves. A tapestry of the Spartanburg community would include families, individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations, schools, health care providers, government agencies and foundations. In that tapestry, threads woven by The Spartanburg County Foundation would reach every corner and be a part of every pattern. Their impact, however, isn’t from funding alone.

ike other community foundations across the country, The Spartanburg County Foundation is embracing its role as a community leader. “Community foundations are realizing that their non-grant-making initiatives can be just as significant as their grant-making,” says Vice-President, Programs Mary Thomas. “The impact we can make beyond dollars shows that we’re here to serve Spartanburg in whatever way we can.” The following are some examples of The Spartanburg County Foundation’s recent community leadership initiatives:

Strategic Spartanburg: Community Indicators VI The Spartanburg County Foundation and United Way of the Piedmont released Strategic Spartanburg: Community Indicators VI in February 2005. This document gives statistical and comparative data designed to help the Spartanburg community identify and examine the social issues affecting its citizens. “The Indicators work gives us the information to make good decisions. It’s a tool that we hope drives community change in a measurable way,” says Thomas. According to Thomas, after the Indicators report, The Spartanburg County Foundation began leading a community-wide effort to bring more than 300 citizens to the table to develop a plan to address critical needs areas. Strategic Spartanburg: Community Improvement Plan (2006-2010), released in January 2006, was the result. “The Indicators document and the Improvement Plan are gifts to our community,” says Thomas. “With these publications we as a community can now move forward on implementation — connecting agencies with complementing missions, helping organizations test new ideas and exploring best practices.”

Grassroots Leadership Development Through the Strategic Spartanburg projects, the Foundation made a special effort to bring new voices — those most affected by the alarming statistics — together 30 • The Spartanburg County Foundation

to talk about the nuances of their communities and their individual circumstances. “The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Grassroots Leadership Development Institute (GLDI) offers participants an opportunity to not only develop their leadership skills, but also the opportunity to apply what they learn to improve their communities,” says A. Stan Davis, consultant and GLDI project manager. “This program strengthens the voices of citizens who choose to make a difference for all citizens of the Spartanburg community.” The Spartanburg County Foundation funded the GLDI with a grant from the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation to help equip these individuals with the tools they need to make their communities better places in which to live. “This innovative program has really opened our eyes,” says Thomas. “Grassroots leaders helped develop the Strategic Spartanburg: Community Improvement Plan (2006-2010). They have met with the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and they have spoken out in the community. It’s created a culture of learning and has helped all of us value the different ideas and opinions in our community.”

South Carolina Rural Communities Compassion Project Four years ago, The Spartanburg County Foundation sought out funding from the Compassion Project only to be told that Spartanburg didn’t qualify as rural. The Foundation’s request, however, encouraged The South Carolina Center for Grassroots and Nonprofit Leadership at Clemson University to take a closer look at Spartanburg, and eventually led to a leveraged investment of $300,000 over a three-year period to increase the effectiveness of Spartanburg County’s nonprofit organizations. The Spartanburg County Foundation and the Center provided funding to organizations to build on their capacity to implement programs related to homelessness, elders in need, at-risk children, people transitioning from welfare to work, those in need of intense rehabilitation services such as prisoners and addicts, and couples who need skills and knowledge to form and sustain healthy marriages.
