The Spartanburg County Foundation 2008

65

Year Anniversary

“Look to the pt or uidnce nto the uture.” – Robert Goodkin

From its founding in 1943, the mission of The Spartanburg County Foundation has remained the same: to improve the quality of life for all the county’s citizens. The men and women who have carried the Foundation’s torch from one decade to the next have always kept that mission in the forefront. So as the population has grown and diversified, and the challenges increased in both number and complexity, the Foundation has continued to harness the power of your generosity to make Spartanburg County a better place to live and to work. To appreciate how far we’ve come, and to better understand our path for tomorrow, we fondly look back over 65 years of The Spartanburg County Foundation.

Walter Scott Montgomery

The 40s. It was a time of war, postwar prosperity and the beginning of the Baby Boom. Meanwhile in Spartanburg County, where textiles were still king, the president of Spartan Mills had a dream. Walter Scott Montgomery was determined to create a foundation dedicated to improving life for all the county’s citizens. With the help of Benjamin O. Johnson, Mr. Montgomery championed the establishment of a community foundation that would “make for the mental, moral, intellectual, and physical improvements, assistance, and relief of the inhabitants of Spartanburg County, South Carolina.” During this decade, The Foundation was able to make great strides in improving and unifying the county, including establishing scholarships for both black and white students, assessing medical and library facilities and purchasing Camp Croft, the former military training base, for all the county’s citizens. 65 Years of Generosity

1950’s The Foundation adopts the Reservoir as an illustration of how its Benevolent Funds channel support to education, health, recreation and welfare.

1959 By the end of the decade, the total assets of the Foundation reach $1,562,745.

1950’s The Foundation begins sending care packages with newsletters to Spartanburg County soldiers serving in Korea.

Book of Memory

The 50s. American industry was booming, bomb shelters were in, the first U.S. satellite orbited the earth, and rock ‘n roll was born. In Spartanburg County, the Foundation was working hard to address a growing population and an ever-changing array of challenges. After the passing of the Board of Trustees’ first and only chairman, Dr. Henry Nelson Snyder, the Foundation established a student loan in his honor. In recognition of the county’s servicemen, the Foundation began sending Christmas remembrances to disabled veterans, and care packages with a local newsletter to soldiers serving in Korea. In 1954, the Foundation awarded 1,223 Bibles to students graduating from Spartanburg County High Schools. The action was so well received that a Bible Fund was established making the presentation an annual event. That same year, SCF began awarding valedictorian medals for academic achievement.

1978 The Camp Croft project is completed and trustees vote to deed the camp’s theater building to the Spartanburg Little Theatre.

The 60s & 70s. The 60s brought us Camelot, Vietnam, Woodstock, and the Beatles. The 70s delivers never-before-seen technology like email, barcodes, the VCR and the MRI. During those two decades, the Foundation continues to serve the community through grants and funding. Projects such as the founding of the Charles Lea Center helps ensure that county citizens with disabilities would receive adequate evaluation, treatment and education. By partnering with community organizations, the Foundation helps with surveys and assessments that result in grants to establish local Girl and Boy Scout Councils, a summer recreation program for the handicapped, and Sheriff Charles Snipes’ County Baseball Program. The Foundation increases its effort towards historic preservation with a grant to establish both the Regional Museum of History and the county’s historical association.

The 80s. Pink Floyd, Whitney Houston and Clint Black were among the music headliners. Business news included hostile takeovers, leveraged buyouts and mega-mergers. The Foundation meantime focuses on grant-making initiatives to advance education, arts and culture, historic preservation, health, social services, recreation and youth activities in the county. The Spartanburg County Foundation assisted in the funding of the Benjamin Johnson Arena at Wofford College, development of the Converse II program for adults, creation of a neonatal ICU and cancer center at Spartanburg General, and expansion of the Mary Black School of Nursing. In the mid-80s the Foundation begins comparing Spartanburg County with surrounding counties in such areas as education, health, economics, crime and family. The resulting Critical Indicators have become an ongoing part of the Foundation’s efforts and have served as a model for other foundations across the country.

During this period, the Foundation adds nearly 400 new funds and grew its total assets by over $48 million. This decade of prosperity enables the Foundation to extend its influence to help more citizens and address more challenges. The Spartanburg County Consensus Project was born, an advocacy group made up of public, private and corporate leaders. This think tank addresses social, economic and environmental issues and the Foundation took a leadership role providing start-up funding and lending its expertise. During this decade, the Foundation creates the Citizen Scholars Program. The Foundation also assists in establishing the Adult Learning Center, Habitat for Humanity and Spartanburg’s “Stop the Violence” Coalition.

2000s. It’s a decade that remains in dramatic transition – from Y2K and 9/11, to increased “green technology” and economic uncertainty. Through it all, The Foundation continues to support community improvements, including a $1 million arts grant as part of Spartanburg’s downtown revitalization. But the Foundation has evolved beyond grantmaking to provide more community leadership through various projects and initiatives. These include the establishment of the Grassroots Leadership Development Institute in 2004, improvements in the Community Indicators Project and a partnership with the SC Rural Communities Compassionate Project. The Foundation is committed to addressing complex issues by bringing citizens together to find bold, innovative ways of solving Spartanburg’s many challenges. Now, with 65 years in the books, we look toward the future. Unknown obstacles and unexpected opportunities await us as the century unfolds. But history tells us that, through the power of generosity, we can make the future a bright one. 65 Years of Generosity

2008. What The Spartanburg County Foundation experienced during the past year was truly extraordinary. Despite the faltering economy, Foundation fund holders gave 1,500 grants totaling $6.3 million to support numerous causes. In addition, The Foundation received over 2,350 contributions, which totaled more than $9 million dollars. And with 35 new charitable funds being established in 2008, funds now under the Foundation’s management number over 800. But the generosity doesn’t stop there. The Foundation’s scholarship funds awarded close to half a million dollars in scholarships, impacting the lives of 400 students and their families. Meanwhile, Women Giving for Spartanburg celebrated its first anniversary and awarded $200,000 in grants to our community. Now 217 women strong, Women Giving was a vision of Trustee Sally Foster, who retired from the Foundation’s Board in December after seven years of dedicated leadership. Julie Lowry and Tracy Hannah also provided tremendous leadership as co-chairs during its inaugural year. The torch has now been handed to Jane Breeden who is currently serving as chair of the circle. The Foundation’s competitive grant making program also remained strong in 2008. The Trustees awarded $325,000 out of The Community Fund to support the work of 20 organizations in the county. In the coming years, the Foundation’s support will become increasingly important as nonprofits strive to serve an ever-increasing number of citizens. Through our partnership with the SC Rural Communities Compassionate Project, it is anticipated that the Foundation will award $1 million in grants and technical assistance to local community and faith-based organizations by the end of 2010. Dr. Kay Woodward elected to Foundation Board. Upon Sally Foster’s retirement in December 2008, Dr. Kay Elizabeth Woodward was elected to the Foundation Board. A business leader and former Converse Associate Professor, the lifelong Spartanburg resident is active in a number of civic and community projects. Woodward has served on the Board of the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, is currently a Trustee of Converse College, and holds a Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degree in psychology from Purdue University. 65 Years of Generosity
