From the

Editor New size, new layout, and a plethora of new features, the September edition of RM Magazine is brimming with more news, more tips, and more articles; a whole heap more than we’ve ever done before. Also this month, a few of the editors trialed some of this county’s top spas and give you their honest opinion on their experience. Tough job girls. We were also invited to The Shepard & Dog to taste their exquisite menu, and yes, we all left painfully full, as the food was just too good to leave. Read our review, we’re certain that you’ll be gagging to get down there. Rebecca Lain of Virgin Active Health Club in Romford gave us some great advice on every girls NO.1 health related question: How do I lose weight and get rid of my belly podge? This is the question she finds that everyone asks the most, so Rebecca tells us what exactly is the best way to lose the weight safely and banish the belly bulge for good. Love Russell Brand? You’ll love our interview. His usually cheeky self with added spiritualism, Russell is back and as lovable as ever.

Enjoy!

Posh Ponies I loved the Duke of Essex Polo feature. I have never been before but having read the article it made me feel like I was there – I can’t wait to get my ticket for next year now, it sounds great! Danni, Chelmsford Ivana says: “It was my first time at the polo too and I loved it! Definitely not one to miss girls, it’s such a glam day out.” Fresh New Look! I just wanted to say I love the new format of RM Magazine, for a free magazine it passes expectations, keep up the good work guys! Ms S Shepard, Romford Jade says: “Glad you like it. We feel that the new format represents what our readers really want to see and read, and it’ll only get better, so keep reading!”

8 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Glitter and Glam “Usually I stay away from glitter, as I tend to look like a street walker if I’m left alone to experiment with my eye make-up. Thanks for tips, I wore some on my eyes to a party over the weekend, and nobody asked what my hourly rate was!” Amber, Brentwood Hayley says: “Great news Amber! Just remember less is more, and you’ll nail it every time!” Shoes Glorious Shoes Thank you so much for the Linzi shoe competition. I always buy their shoes anyway so seeing all the new season collection on one page was too good to resist! Sam, Grays Tony Says: “Glad you liked the competition Sam. Linzi do some great shoes, so as you were not lucky in the competition, why not treat yourself ?” Chic Seaside The Coast to coast feature really opened my eyes. It’s true, I always look overseas for a holiday but now I will look a little closer to home. I had no idea how beautiful England was. Karen, Writtle Ivana Says: “I was so lucky to be a part of the inaugural Easyjet flight from Southend to Newquay and I can’t recommend it enough – If you can, you must visit the beautiful coast, it felt like a real paradise.”

Disgusting ingredients As an avid animal lover and supporter of animal cruelty free products, I was pleased to read your feature on the disgusting ingredients in our make-up. Thank you for highlighting that people should be more aware of what we put on our faces, and where these ingredients come from! Always read the label and do your research, you’d be surprised at what seemingly ‘nice’ companies use and the methods that they use to test. Johann, Hornchurch Hayley Says: “Thanks Johann, it’s great to hear you haven’t been traumatised by it! No wonder more natural beauty brands are popping up. All the better for our skin, my dear.” The Price is Right I like the new look magazine - I now can’t put it down! The cover really caught my eye and I have to say that the interview with Katie Price completely changed my opinion of her. She seems like a really kind, genuine woman. Jess, Chelmsford Ivana Says: “Thanks Jess – it seems like the interview has changed a lot of people’s minds about Ms Price. She was great to interview so fingers crossed her new baby is safe and sound.”

Staying Choosy! I loved the Little Miss Choosy article! I really agree with some of the comments made by the Dating Coach, especially about sex being offered for free and therefore people feel as though they don’t need to commit to get it. I’m with the traditional girls and definitely believe it’s worthwhile holding out for the best relationships! Katie, Hornchurch Hayley Says: “Thanks Katie, it’s good to hear someone agree with me. Let’s show guys not all Essex girls conform to the stereotype!” Coffee table mystery Last month you featured a Morocco coffee table (page 39) would you be kind enough to tell me where I could purchase that from? Mrs Laver, Hornchurch. Tony says: “Of course – The Morocco coffee table was from very. co.uk – They do more than just great clothes! As you’ll remember it was £109, so happy buying.”

Have you got something you would like to say to the team? E-mail us at: hello@rmmagazine.co.uk and you could see your message in the magazine!

What’s hot right now..

this month

This month we just can’t hide what RM loves. So sit back, relax and get ready to fall in love too.

Who

What

When

Lady Gaga is back! And she’s madder and badder than ever! Gaga will be headlining London’s iTunes festival – we cannot wait to see her reign again.

The One Direction Film: This Is Us – And this is us; grown women hyperventilating at the thought of seeing all of the boys in 3D for well over an hour.

Cara Delevingne – yep, still! Last month she turned 21, and even though she is still a mere baby she is cooler than most people could dream of being.

It’s so wrong it’s right. The Rihanna for River Island A/W collection – After rave reviews were received from her earlier collection, it seems Rhi Rhi has Rhi-invented the high street store. Expect every item to be a lust have.

Will the 50 Shades of Grey film cast ever be announced? We have been on the edge of our seats for months now, banding around the idea of Mila Kunis v Emma Watson as our Ana?

Hurry up and just tell us the truth. Is Jennifer Aniston getting married? She has had more rumoured secret weddings than we’ve had hot dinners. We want the truth, and more than that, we want to find out if the love/hate situation with her frenemy Courtney Cox has subsided.

Wear

Why

Does New Girl have to end? We are being serious now, Zooey Deschanel is our ultimate girl crush and the season always always ends too quickly.

Is Essex cool again? Yes, really. With a little help from funny man Lee Evans’ latest must see ‘Barking in Essex,’ it seems this county is no longer a joke.

Clubbed Out and Barefoot Flipflops. The ultimate accessory for a night out, because let’s face it, it will be a long time before we sacrifice our killer heels – but pack these bad boys away and you’ll be able to walk home in comfort. Finally, the best of both worlds. Tresor Paris Nouvelle collection – Anything from this stunning collection will ensure serious envy from friends and enemies – buyer beware!

Latest Celeb Comment

Top of the Crops In years to come, people will ask where you were on 8th August 2013 - why? Well that was the landmark day the Queen cut her hair. By the Queen, of course we mean Queen B, AKA Beyoncé. And the very fact a haircut has made the news must tell you this was a big deal.

I

n actual fact it wasn’t big at all. It was a short back and sides to give it its technical term. The internet went into meltdown the very instant our modern female icon posted on her instagram that she had cut off her luscious long tresses in favour of a pixie crop. Why? What did this mean? Had she done a ‘Miley Cyrus’ and was about to start aggressively twerking? Should we all be doing this, was this the new sign of an empowerment bandwagon we should all be jumping on? After all Anne Hathaway, Carey Mulligan and of course Rihanna have experimented with a cropped style, but with Beyoncé the reaction was different.

For a start, people actually reacted - in a big way. When B posted her three Instagram snaps without captions, all of her fans went crazy. Her short, beach blonde cut earned her around 10,000 comments, not to mention a few hundred thousand likes per image. But the Twitter reaction was slightly more mixed. Fellow short haired alumni member, Emma Watson tweeted: “Nearly got out my scissors this morning after seeing @Beyonce ‘s pixie cut. I only just managed to restrain myself. Close call though..” And a fan had similar praise tweeting: @DinaPugliese: “She looks un-BEY-weavable! Hair today, gone tom! Gorge!” But others were definitely less flattering @szl97: “#Beyonce looks like Peter Pan with her new hair cut” and @kittenpav: “Beyonce looks bad with her pixie cut. Sorry only Miley can pull it off and look hot.”

So what do we think? Well, being Beyoncé, it isn’t just a haircut. And to agree with Beyoncé’s own stylist Kim Kimble, short, dramatic hair is a statement that says, “I’m young, I’m beautiful and I can do it all.” Wow! If only more people had known about this empowerment, they would have just chopped their locks rather than bothered to burn their bras! We joke because Beyoncé is clearly one of the most beautiful women on the planet. The cropped cut emphasised her striking eyes and her supermodel cheekbones. But just over a week later B was spotted with a longer choppy bob haircut – was the crop not so top? Perhaps the Queen of pop has taken inspiration from the actual Queen, as her hairdresser, Ian Carmichael has gone on record saying how much more flattering longer hair is on women. Ian has said that women need more length and texture to look more feminine. So while B’s crop was a head turner, we looked because it was so different. Miley Cyrus cropped her barnett as a style statement that said she was no longer a Disney star – fair enough. But Beyoncé’s style statement said loud and proud ‘I am strong, I am still beautiful and I don’t need to follow fashion.’ The original independent woman has shown that a simple haircut can make the world’s media change their opinion and say that actually the most beautiful thing is to be comfortable in your own skin. So if you want to be top of the crops, decide if it is best for you – not what someone else says!

High street retailer Debenhams have recently revealed the socks and sandals combo has been rated the biggest fashion faux pas of all time, but are yours even worse?

“I thought wearing a baby blue wool track suit with crop top in the middle of summer was a hot look. It was actually boiling! Sweat marks showed everywhere! I only wore it the one time.” – Megan

“I wore a Chinese style top with a pencil skirt that was far too tight and black boots. It gets worse. I had short hair that looked like it had been cut with a lawn mower and white eyeliner. I looked a disaster and I could barely move!” – Lucy

It has its own campaign and national week, but what makes wool so special?

A

utumn has arrived, and despite the majority still clawing onto their summer wardrobe, it is going to get colder. Now, we need to think winter, and we need to think wool.

From October 14 - 20 it’s National Wool Week. This campaign aims to educate more people about the benefits and versatility of wool, which then supports many small businesses and local farmers whose livelihoods depend on the wool industry. This seven day celebration is full of events, workshops and of course fashion. Supporters come in the form of high street stores such as Marks and Spencer, Pringle and John Lewis, who help raise awareness. Last year legendary store Harvey Nichols hung a giant ball of yarn - complete with needles - on the front outside wall for the duration of the week. It was made with over 100m of yarn and measured an incredible five and a half metres in diameter. They don’t do subtle. Who knows what will be unravelled this year, but forget itchy, granny jumpers that shrink in the wash. There are plenty of stylish woollen pieces that can now be machine-washed and tumble dried, thanks to recent developments. But if you still need a little more persuasion, here are a few more reasons to choose this material over the others and support Wool Week.

Why choose wool? •

Top quality wool products stay looking good for longer as its natural elasticity means it stretches with the wearer, but then returns to its normal shape.

• It has a naturally high UV protection, which is much higher than most synthetics and cotton. • It absorbs moisture vapour and sweat next to the skin very well, making it extremely breathable. • The fibres have a natural protective layer which prevents it from soaking up stains. • Wool is static resistant, so clothes pick up less dust. • It’s anti-allergenic making it ideal in bedding and carpets for asthma sufferers. • Wool reacts to changes in your body temperature. It keeps you warm when you’re cold but releases heat when you’re hot. • Studies show that wool bedding can also aid sleep by up to 25% and is especially beneficial in helping babies sleep better.

I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Dr Jas and his team for the excellent job you have done on my smile, my confidence and my nerves. I have been so scared to go to the dentist for many years ever since an incident which left me VERY nervous. I then booked an appointment at Perfect Smile Spa.

Complex Cases always treated at Perfect Smile Spa This person was referred to Dr Jas to restore his very broken down and worn teeth. The teeth got like this because of excessive fizzy drinks. This damaged the enamel and then grinding of the teeth caused excessive wear! Dr Jas corrected the teeth and smile very quickly with new Porcelain Crowns. The missing back teeth have also been replaced. They have transformed the smile in as little as a few weeks with no discomfort. They look very natural and people that have them done say their friends say that they look amazing! Indeed we get so many recommendations from people that are so happy with their treatments.

I am pleased to tell you Jas, that after the first few visits, I no longer had any terrors or nerves and no longer want to cry or be sick when I visit the dentist, in actual fact I have enjoyed my visits to see you and your lovely team of nurses.

fashion

Surviving London Fashion Week You’ve got your outfit, you’ve got your pass; now it’s time to submerge yourself in the shows of London Fashion Week. It’s back! From 13th to 17th September, fashion fanatics will flock to London again to see the best of British fashion. Industry experts and regular guests will know the drill by now, but if it’s your first time it can seem a little daunting. Here are some tips to help you strut through London Fashion Week fiercer than Cara Delevingne. 1. Prioritise shows. I’m guessing you don’t have a driver on speed dial, so you won’t make it to every show. Work out which ones you want to see the most and the time it will take to dart between their venues. 2. Choose your footwear wisely. One word: cobblestones, aka heel destroyers. Yes you need to be fashion focused and a skinny stiletto may be the perfect partner for your little dress, but if it gets stuck or snaps at Somerset House, it’s not such a good look. Plus you’ll be doing a lot of standing and queuing so make sure your shoes are chic and comfy. 3. Pack the essentials. Big handbags are a must for carting around all your invites and show info, but it will also be your survival kit. Pack business

cards for networking, a bottle of water to stay hydrated in the crowds, plasters for your fierce new footwear, mints and your favourite lippy – air kisses come in the dozens!

4. Follow the Twitter trail. Create a follow list of celebs, journalists and top bloggers on Twitter, and keep an eye out for their tweets giving away the secret locations of the top shows, and pictures of their invitations. If you have time between shows, go along for some celeb spotting. 5. Have a back-up battery. If your phone dies it’s game over. No more tweeting, meeting up, or Google mapping your way around. Plus the queues would be even more unbearable without music, YouTube and Facebook. 6. Blag your way in. If you couldn’t get a ticket for the show you wanted to see, head down there early and ask the publicist in charge if there are any Standing Tickets left. There is usually a handful left or spaces will pop up when guests cancel. Can’t make it to the show? Live stream some of the shows straight to your screen via www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

15 things you - didn’t know about waxing The experts reveal prepping tips, trade tricks and even slimming secrets behind waxing.

T

his summer you either waxed or you didn’t, but either way there is more to the hair removal process than you think – don’t worry, there’s not a rip or a stitch in sight. Elite waxing salon Strip are pioneering pain-free waxing. They have just celebrated the first birthday of their Loughton salon and are introducing new services such as teeth whitening and Botox; so what makes them gleam against their competitors? “Essex women really care about the way they look,” says co-founder Danielle Featherstone-Price. “They take complete pride in everything from top to toe. We want them to enjoy their waxing treatment as much as having their hair done.” Enjoying your hair being ripped from the root as much as having it fluffed up and preened is a pretty tall order. However, they’re turning this normally scream-educing process into a pampering treatment through their products, knowledge and techniques. Whether you wax or not, we bet this will make you look at it in a whole new light. The experts at Strip bare all... > 22 | rmmagazine.co.uk

PREP

1

“Start by having your hair the right length,” says Carleigh Rayner, training manager and waxing extraordinaire at the Chelsea salon. Having your hair about 4mm long before a wax is a great length and will give you the best results.

2

If you’ve never had a wax, it will take two or three sessions before all your hair is growing back at the same speed.

3

Hair grows in cycles. When the hair is removed at the anagen (growing) phase, the waxed hair-free period will last longer as the hair has been removed at the earliest stage of its development.

4

Telogen (resting) is the last of the hair growth cycle. When telogen hair is waxed off, the hair-free period will not last as long because the new anagen hair is just below the skin, waiting to break through.

5

Exfoliating the day before will help prep your skin prior to a wax. “Never moisturise or exfoliate the day of your wax because your skin is going to get a bit of an exfoliation from the wax,” advises Carleigh. “Have clean dry skin.”

6

Shaving doesn’t technically make your hair thicker, it makes it feel thicker because it’s cut bluntly, but waxing makes it thinner. “Every time you’re pulling hair out by the root, that root is getting weaker” explains Carleigh.

1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 5

TRICKS When waxing sensitive areas, always opt for hot wax (pliable wax that is applied then pulled off ) over strip wax (warm wax ripped off by a strip of material), as it’s about 70% less painful. “If you wax you will not get any itchiness because the new hair grows through with a tip, whereas when shaved hair comes through, it’s pushing through the skin with a blunt end,” says Maria-Louise Featherstone, sister of Danielle and co-founder of Strip. Only a few therapists use the gate control theory of pain on their clients, including Carleigh. “When I take the wax off, it sends a message to the brain saying ‘that hurts’ and your nerves go off. But when I put my hand down onto the waxed area straight away, it sends a soothing message and takes away the pain.” Ingrown hairs are caused by rubbing. If you’ve ever noticed a reoccurring patch of ingrown hairs on certain parts of your legs, that will be caused from crossing them.

SLIMMING The higher you keep your ‘downstairs’ hair, the longer your legs will look as that’s where your legs stop. If you have a short strip or a ‘Hitler moustache’ it makes your legs look shorter. “For pear shaped women, a natural triangle of hair down there is a lot more flattering as it follows the lines of your hips. If you have big hips, get a big triangle and it will make you look slimmer,” says Carleigh. If you’re top heavy, opt for a skinnier triangle. If there is more space either side of the triangle, it will make your hips look wider. “If you’re an hour glass, go for a taller and wider triangle, which is very in at the moment,” says Carleigh. “For straight up and down and boyish shapes, a parallel strip of hair looks nice,” says Danielle.

What hair colour will suit me?

Changing your hair colour with the season? Read our guide first. Your hair should enhance your natural beauty, not leave you looking flushed or washed out. Find a shade to suit your skin tone and breeze into a new Autumn look.

Pale Skin

What do stylists mean by ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ tones? “We’re taught to divide colours into warm and cool, but it’s not an exact science. Cool colours have an ash tone that includes blue, violet, grey and beige. Warm tones include copper, gold and red. Mahogany can fall into either camp depending on how you mix it.”

To avoid that tired, washed-out look, those with pale skin should avoid dark and cool hair colours. Stick with warm tones, which will reflect your natural skin tone. Golden sun kissed blondes are ideal - they’ll warm up your whole face. If you have light skin but with some redness to it, steer clear of red hair as it can make you look flushed.

Black Skin or Asian Skin If you have a dark or South Asian complexion, look for colours that will bring out the healthy glow in your skin. You’ll be best suited to warm reds and richer browns.

Black Skin Black skin often has a warm, golden base to it, so it will go best with warm reds or mahogany’s - steer clear of oranges and gold’s. If you are mixed race and have a creamier skin tone (think Leona Lewis), try cool coffee shades for a sun kissed look. 24 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Tanned Skin Warm, golden skin tones should stick with cooler hair colours for a natural look. If you’ve got olive skin, like Eva Longoria, avoid golden or copper shades as they make the skin look yellow. Warm mahogany browns and reds will work best.

Test for the Best:

Sexy waves and lose curls were hot on the AW13 catwalk, however, this effortless look can be seriously hard to achieve. So forget frizzy limp locks, we’ve unravelled some great products that will help you get gorgeous hair in a pump, slick and scrunch.

4/5 Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream, £24.75

>

The non-sticky cream smells divine and stays in the hair for days. You only need a small amount and it leaves hair feeling strengthened. The waves will take time to kick in if your hair is naturally straight, but be patient, once they spring up they will last for several days.

>

You’d be hard pushed to find a product with a more seductive smell – think sexy showered man – seriously! Apply it generously then let your hair dry naturally to achieve conditioned frizz-free waves. However, we wouldn’t recommend it for fine hair as it’s too heavy.

Macadamia Natural Oil Reviving Curl Cream, £5.85

Hair curling products

label.m Leave-in Conditioner, £12.95

This heavenly scented conditioner almost lathers up as you massage it into washed hair. Then it needs to be combed through, a process that can be harsh, so go easy when lathering up your locks. Blast your hair about 80% dry, and then see soft curls take shape that last for days. Finish with a little serum.

5/5

Mark Hill Bad Girl Glam Wicked Waver, £59.99

Mark Hill’s Wicked Waver creates angelic twirls. It heats up to 200C, but you can adjust the temperate depending on your hair’s thickness and how tight you want the curl. Coils can be created in fine hair at just 150C, by wrapping small sections around the wand, holding for a couple of seconds, then letting it tumble out.

Michel Mercier detangling brush, £12.99

These newly designed brushes are perfect for detangling wet hair, and brushing out dry curls for a softer finish. They massage the scalp and reduce hair loss and breakage (great for using with the label.m conditioner). There are three designs for thick, thin and medium hair types, all now available in Sainsbury’s nationwide.

Forever Young

AGE PROOF YOUR SKIN! Wrinkles; it’s enough to make us raise a brow, or even reach for the needle, but what exactly makes our skin change as we get older? Our skins inevitable decline due to both internal and external factors. Internally, as we get older the structure of our skin changes as the quality of the collagen and elastin underlying our skin decreases. Collagen provides softness, resilience and suppleness, while elastin helps keep skin tight and flexible. As these proteins degenerate, the visible quality of our skin changes and it becomes dehydrated and wrinkled.

Invest in a cleansinG brush Nothing beats a good cleaning brush for removing make-up and providing a light, daily exfoliation. That means you’ll get better absorption of the skincare ingredients that you apply after washing. TRY Clarisonic Mia - £99.00 www.clarisonic.co.uk

28 | rmmagazine.co.uk

External factors that can contribute to ageing skin include excessive exposure to the sun, pollution and stress. Smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol to excess, and poor dietary habits are also regarded as external contributors. All of these factors may increase free radical activity, which damage the cell membranes of skin structures, and ultimately contribute to the appearance of the aged skin. So if you want to keep your youthful glow alight as long as possible, here’s what you can do.

Swear by vitamin C It’s the antioxidant every pro raves about. To combat long hours spent outside being exposed to environmental elements like the sun and smog, celebrities use products with heavy doses of vitamin C to protect and repair their skin. TRY Vitamin C Radiance capsules - £15.00 www.thebodyshop.co.uk

Consume Foods Full oF Antioxidants Eating foods rich and antioxidants can be your key to the chamber of youth. Antioxidants remove impurities, protect the skin against irritants and allergies, minimise pore-invading bacteria, plus improves your metabolism. Was there ever a better excuse to eat chocolate? TRY – Blueberries, Green tea, Dark chocolate

Take in Fish Oil Supplements Fish oil supplements have been around for quite some time, but not all of us realise their benefits. Okay they’re not the most glamorous pills, but they provide a necessary, lubricating source for your skin and your joints. They’re also rich in Omega 3, which means that you are giving your brain energy and nutrients too. TRY Cod Liver Oil Capsules, £7.29

Despite being in the health club, you don’t have to be a member to use the spa and you can extend your visit and use the wet facilities.

How to look

beautiful inside & out

Want to look as radiant as Rihanna but don’t quite have the same budget? Well some of the best ingredients for your skin are found in the supermarket. Yep, beautiful skin starts with food, so read on to find out how you can glow from inside and out.

W

hether you’re a city high flyer or a simple country girl, the daily grind can get to us all. It’s good to take a back seat and really look after yourself, and the great news is that you don’t have to be a jet setter to experience some spa luxury right in the comfort of your own home. Even better, you don’t even have to spend a fortune, or look further than your own kitchen cupboard. Repeat after us: you are what you eat…

One of Your Five a Day:

Love them or loath them, doctors do know what they are talking about, so listen when they are talking about eating your five a day. Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables as they contain really powerful antioxidants that help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals – the nasty’s hiding in cigarettes, sunlight and pollution that give you age spots and wrinkles. We recommend pumpkin or carrots for the high content of betacarotene and papaya for its high level of lutein – all powerful antioxidants that will help the skin’s development and give it a healthy tone.

To Lose Weight You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Fat:

Believe it or not, fatty acids found in fish, seeds, nuts and avocado are described as essential. They act as natural moisturiser for your skin and a great big healthy dose of vitamin E. So not only will your skin be lovely and supple, it will also be protected against free radicals.

The Multi-Tasker:

Unbeknown to us, ginger is a total lifesaver, and is even being introduced into commercial products. It’s no surprise really when you consider all of the amazing things ginger can do for your body, hair and skin. It can heal burns, reduce scars and can even stimulate circulation too. It doesn’t stop there, the anti-oxidants in ginger mean it is capable of increasing the elasticity and firmness of skin meaning, a more youthful appearance! Ginger is also antiviral and antibacterial, so it is capable of reducing redness such as acne, and it’s detoxifying ingredients, can put the dreaded cellulite at bay. If that wasn’t enough, the essential oils from ginger can help to rejuvenate skin and strengthen hair.

Why Moisturise When You Can Rejuvenate… Try Ginger Skin Cream

This skin treat takes a little more work, but trust us, you won’t be sorry. Before you start, preheat your oven to its lowest setting. Then get your ginger and finely grate it until you have 1/8 of a teaspoon. Next you will need the ginger ‘juice’ so squeeze the freshly grated ginger into a small bowl. Then add the rest of the ingredients to the glass container and heat until the cocoa butter is melted and all of the oils are blended. Then pour it into another container and store in a cool, dry place. You won’t believe the difference it makes to your skin.

Comfort Eating Can De-stress:

Yes, you did read that right. So called ‘banned’ foods like sea salt and raw sugar are actually really good for your skin. Now that doesn’t mean drowning your food with these guilty pleasures, but instead, try them on your body. Raw sugar contains organic substances like glucose, which we know is good for energy, but did you know that it can enhance digestion, improve circulation and increase the production of red blood cells.

Russell

Brand In advance of his comedy tour Messiah Complex, Essex’s most notorious bad boy talks humour, karma and being in the spotlight. So is Russell Brand just misunderstood? One thing about Russell Brand; you can’t ignore him. He’s the ladies’ man, comedian, film star and all around scene-stealer. 34 | rmmagazine.co.uk

And although he has lived in America for some time, Katy Perry’s former husband hasn’t forgotten his roots – or his considerable fan base – back in England. This October, those fans are in for a treat as Brand begins his bold new tour, the Messiah Complex, in which he says he will be “causing bother and excitement and offering opinions that have not been either solicited or thought through!” Having just cancelled the Middle East section of his tour due to concerns for his safety and the suitability of his material for that audience, it’s clear Brand is looking forward to educating the safer areas of the world, and those that enjoy free speech, on his subjects: Che Guevara, Gandhi, Malcolm X and Jesus - Russell’s typical mix of naughty and nice then. He explains: “You’ve got to feel comfortable delivering comedy. Naturally, when you talk about Baby Jesus there are few who can take offence... it’s such a middling theme. That said, I’d rather be doing the sketch here where, at worst, I’ll get some eggs thrown at me.” Brand’s come a long way in his personal life after narrowly escaping career suicide with the now infamous Sachs-Gate scandal along with his friend Jonathan Ross, and his 2007 autobiography My Booky Wook dealt extensively with his career as a drug user and subsequent abstinence. Credit to Brand; he has never hidden his flaws, his goal has always been to educate. “I think the sense of humour in all of us is inherent, but you have to cultivate it and educate it,” he smiles. “Like some people would be good at football or basketball

or something, but then they require the training, don’t they? So what I think it comes from — and I think this must be true, because every time I think about it, it’s a pang for me that nearly makes me cry — is it’s a response to pain and fear.” How so? “It’s a response to the knowledge of death. It’s a response to the certainty that there’s something else, that humour provides us a moment of respite, relief. An explosion away from the conformity, the unnatural condition we’re forced to live in as these gentle animals that we are.” Taking a more serious tone than we’re used to, the Essex-born comedian states that humour temporarily alleviates the burden: “It shows us that our spirit lives on, that we can change things... that we can triumph against all adversity. There’s always a march stolen by the intellectual elite, by the atheists, that somehow we have to be grown up, that somehow we have to be serious – that there’s some obligation towards academia and bureaucracy. But the fact is we can just be silly if we like!” And silly he will be when he begins his nationwide tour in Birmingham on October 7. In his inimitable motor mouth style, Brand’s material is known for going utterly off track, but with the focus on the Messiah Complex – a mental disorder where someone believes they are the messiah – it promises to be his riskiest (and most entertaining) material yet. A large part of Brand’s appeal is his ability to switch in a heartbeat from silly to serious. “Because of the enormous sensitivity required to be a comedian,”

He’s the risky and risqué humanitarian and a close personal friend of the Dalai Lama. He is so loud and energetic, that whether you like his particular ‘brand’ of comedy or not, he has undeniable appeal that has seen him rise from recovering addict to international superstar.

exclusive interview

he says, “there’s a velocity of thought. Comedy and tragedy obviously have a relationship with each other, so you have to inherently understand what the tragedy is to play the comedy.” Having had a high very profile marriage, and divorce, from Katy Perry, and after appearing in a number of movies from St Trinian’s to Rock of Ages, Get Him to the Greek and Arthur, Brand has rarely been out of the public eye since bursting onto the scene over a decade ago. So has he missed being able to live a ‘normal’ life? “It seems a long time ago now so I guess I have got used to it,” he laughs. “There is a level now where I understand I will always be watched, almost like a thief would. I am the star of a 24-hour CCTV B-movie, and it ain’t pretty! But there are ways to quickly get used to the whole thing, even when you don’t feel like it.” Maybe this is why he has turned his more spiritual side to kundalini yoga and has mellowed out? Not likely. As we went to print, Russell was linked with yet another mystery female, and no doubt more headlines will follow when he starts his world tour. Rubbish Relationship Rules Ever wondered why you’re single, or even worse, stuck in a terrible relationship rut? Well it’s probably because we all stick to the stupid rules that get us nowhere. So below is some silly advice you MUST ignore, it’s better to break the rules than break your heart.

When we are talking about rules, we obviously mean The New Rules, you know the reprised must have manual from the 90’s. The set of dating rules so popular, it was even happily quoted in Sex and the City. The authors Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider decided to update their much loved manual to help us all through the minefield that is social media. Nowadays there are so many ways to get in touch with someone, you’re going to want to make sure you do it right. And even if you’re not necessarily a ‘rules’ girl, how many of us can remember the awkward agony of sitting on your phone waiting for him to text you? So with this in mind, we have also looked to Why Men Love Bitches and He’s Just Not that Into you, to finally discover the right thing to do and the best things to ignore.

DON’T go to sleep on an argument Countless psychologists and therapists have said that this is definitely a rule to ignore. After all, some arguments take longer than a couple of hours to resolve – and if you look over the problem with a refreshed mind, you’re more likely to see a solution clearer too. Try focusing on a good memory of your relationship, to remind yourself why you are with them in the first place. But if you’re simply too angry for that, maybe just focus on a thought that makes you happy – As long as it isn’t an ex-boyfriend!

ALWAYS be honest Ok, here’s the thing, it’s called brutally honest for a reason. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. What is the best that can possibly come out of telling your partner your innermost thoughts that are often so private you wouldn’t even dream of telling family or friends without at least taking their feelings into consideration? But believe us, this does not give you a free pass to just lie to their face for the sake of it. Saying you like their haircut when you probably don’t is one thing, lying about seeing their best friend is something else altogether.

DO chase him This could signal the start for your relationship to haemorrhage problems. Think about it, anything that is chased runs away – a brilliant logic in Why Men Love Bitches. And men are primarily very old fashioned anyway. They are programmed to be the hunter-gatherer and so if you take the initiative, then he won’t feel, well, manly. Indicate your interest, after all he isn’t a mind reader (probably just as well), but let him do most of the leg work.

36 | rmmagazine.co.uk

ALWAYS text first Hey if you like him, why not let him know? Why not shout it from the rooftops. Or not. Don’t you think that’s a little bit too nice, and dare we say, clingy? While we don’t agree with everything in The New Rules, some of the ideas have real logic behind them. For example, he will only respect you if you set boundaries, so don’t answer his calls after midnight. Plus, keep text and email replies brief in the early stages, to keep him wanting more.

TRY and make him jealous of you Just don’t. He will realise what you are doing very quickly and probably just leave you. Harsh? Maybe, but would you stay with someone who was playing games? So don’t go posting obvious Facebook statuses about how much fun you are having when you’re not seeing him, it looks a bit desperate. Have a little bit of mystery to you. Don’t be too available, and don’t flash up on every social media platform there is so you’re in his face so much he can’t miss you.

This month RM discusses:

Is Sexting Cheating? Who would have thought that a rugby player would be able to make even sports virgins sit up and listen? Well is it any wonder? It seems that Danny Cipriani has done a lot of talking recently and we can’t quite believe our ears. The 25 year old has managed to become the unwitting poster boy for bad behaviour – Well who else would even consider cheating on the beautiful Kelly Brook? So believe it or not, the revelations are great news for us. It has brought the subject of sexting back to the forefront of everyone’s mind – So if you’re in a relationship, feel free to rejoice! After all, this needs to be discussed. What has Danny actually done? Was it just a stupid thing to do (more than once) or is sexting cheating? It’s a tough one. Cheating has traditionally been a physical act of betrayal. But with the digital age came an open door policy for indiscretions and a colourful screen to hide behind. Unbelievably bad behaviour has been positively encouraged with mobile phone geeks inventing an Android App to help love rats cover their own tracks. The sexting app, also known as CATE – the Call And Text Eraser, can only be a by-product of their own fantasy lives lived in a darkened room. But the consequences can be very real. Poor women, and men now have no chance as contacts and texts are kept private in an invisible locker on your phone. Encouraging a sexy alter ego through the acronym CATE can only really spell disaster. To my mind, you only go to the effort of covering something up if you know you shouldn’t be doing it. And I am not alone. A YouGov poll of 1, 000 American men and women found that 85% of females and

38 | rmmagazine.co.uk

74% of males believed the non-physical act was cheating. Just because something isn’t physical doesn’t make it pure fantasy as it is a relationship of sorts. Louisa Peacock from the Daily Telegraph has said that when the sexting is going on behind your partner’s back, it “has the power to be just as hurtful as a full-blown affair with another person.” So in some ways, an emotional-only cheat is even more hurtful. I hope I am never cheated on, but I would find hearing my partner saying he ‘loved’ the other woman much more hurtful than all of the dirty details of their affair. He would no longer be the person I thought he was. So whether you are communicating via text, email or social media, they are all tools that we use to talk and get to know each other better. So like landlines and even payphones before them, they are simply the messenger. For me, communicating with someone via text is no less important than a love letter or even whispering secret messages in someone’s ear. The fact is, you’re either intimate with that person or you aren’t. And based on some of the sexts Danny and co are meant to have sent, they are pretty intimate. So what do you think ladies? What would you do if you caught your partner sexting, or have you already discovered his mobile secret? Join the conversation on @RMZine #RMdebate

Why did you want the job, is it what you’ve always wanted to do? “Well, my first choice was always the RAF so I could be as active as possible and avoid paperwork and the usual stress of an office job. But after looking into it, the job wasn’t what I thought it would be. So in 2010 I applied for Essex Police and managed to gain acceptance first time! xy se k o lo d n a t h ig e w se lo to How Any existing gym bunnies out there will already know that a healthy lifestyle isn’t about building muscles or breaking records – it’s about whatever makes you happy. Well we know that most ladies want to lose weight and achieve a super toned sexy stomach, so we asked personal trainer, Rebecca Lain at Virgin Active Health Club where to start. There are three key points to remember when you want to lose weight: diet, weights and cardio. And if you want that super sexy toned stomach; 70% - 80% of results will be achieved through a dietary change. Rebecca advises all aspiring goddesses to “eat like a caveman - anything that you could hunt or grow before we had Tesco’s is what you should be eating.” So how can we break this down into three key points?

Rebecca Lain 20 years old Qualified PT Level 3 – worked at Virgin Active for a year Achieved her Nutrition Level 3 Likes Dancing Fav exercise – squats Fav meal – salmon with veg

DIET

WEIGHTS

CARDIO

“Ask yourself what you’re eating. Keep a threeday food diary and really look at the foods that you’re consuming everyday. Decide what you can then cut out or change.”

“Ever wondered why your gym visits usually end up in no physical results? Cardio will help you ‘shrink’ whereas weights allows you to tone the body & define your muscles so that you get a sexy slender shape.”

“You’ll need to combine cardio into your workout so that you work the heart muscle, which is really important as you get older. So for really effective results, change your cardio workout regularly so that you work the heart in different ways.”

So what’s the best way to look your best? Rebecca’s top tips are: • Continue to burn fat after exercise. Yes it is hard but your body continues to burn fat when you’re resting, so this is the optimum time to carry on. • If you really want to see results, try to work as many muscles as possible with one exercise. Two words: Compound exercise. • Spend no more than one hour a day maximum working out. You do not want to injure yourself. • If you want quick results without the fads, try high intensity for a short amount of time.

But what is the best cardio workout to do in the first place? Rebecca’s top tips are: • It increases your fitness levels, so if you want to become more athletic, this is one not to ignore. • To achieve a healthy heart, try Interval training - repetitions of high-speed/intensity work, followed by low activity exercise. • Fartlek training will help improve your speed and endurance. This is usually running at varied speeds. • As the name suggests, Constant training is cardio at the same speed throughout your workout, so that you build your endurance.

So what you should you be eating? Rebecca’s top tips are: • Stay away from heavy carbs – I’m talking about things like sugar, pizza and potatoes, as these are the main culprits for weight gain. • Never forget that the main aim is to be healthy. So don’t attack the diet straight away, reduce your portion sizes slowly. • Avoid processed foods – the aim is to be healthy and beautiful, not a skinny Minnie! • Never forget that your body is made up of around 60% water. So keep drinking water to keep everything working properly. • Don’t lose more than 2lb of fat per week – anymore is unhealthy and we are aiming for a lifestyle change rather than just a quick fix.

5 Fitness Myths

Most of us will do pretty much anything to look good; even if that does mean complying with weird and whacky rules. To stop this embarrassment, we take a look at 5 of the most commonly believed fitness rules that are in fact myths:

You can target specific areas of the body.

Extra protein builds more muscle.

Just because you’re exercising a specific body part, don’t believe that it will reduce fat in that specific area. Exercise works on the body as a whole. Working areas of large muscle groups will provide the best results.

No one can deny that protein is important when building and maintaining muscles however, excess amounts can be stored as fat. Most calorie containing nutrients can be stored as fat if too much is consumed, so keep it moderate.

Strength training is one of the only types of exercise that proves this theory right, as you’re working on strengthening muscles directly. For example bicep curls will strengthen the biceps, as you’re directly working on this particular muscle.

Sports drinks are better than water. Most ‘enhanced’ performance drinks challenge the importance of water. Ridiculous right? It’s believed that water aids weight loss as it’s a great appetite suppressant; most of the time, when we feel hungry we’re actually thirsty. There are so many health benefits to drinking water that sports drinks just can’t offer, reduced risk of heart attack being just one. Most ‘energy’ drinks are full of sugar, which you may think you need when you’re feeling tired or sluggish. Wrong! You may just be dehydrated, so choose a glass of water every time!

There are a few ways to calculate the amount of protein that you should be obtaining for your weight and consuming the right amount will provide great results.

Only morning workouts are effective.

As long as your body is moving, you’re burning fat.

Unless you’re training to an Olympic standard, it’s not necessary to carry out your workouts at specific times.

Yes, some people may actually be fooled by this but (unfortunately!) it’s all lies. If you’re moving at the pace of a snail, you’re not going to burn any fat.

What does matter is that you find a time where you can carry out consistent training. Listen to your body clock and find when you’re most energetic; this is the perfect time to conduct a good workout.

You can’t beat an interval training session and varied intensity of each exercise is sure to have your heart pumping and sweat pouring – and if you’re lucky, you may even burn some fat!

Stretch your Exercise:

Pre-Season Training Ladies, listen up! It’s September already and the start of the new sporting season. So get up, stand tall and get ready to kick start your workout. Whatever your sport, once we’ve finished with you we can guarantee that everyone else will sit up and listen. As you know, before you start any sport you must warm up your muscles first to prevent any over stretching and potential muscle damage. Stretching is one of the most effective techniques for improving your athletic performance and preventing a sports injury. After all, such movements are repeated throughout any game almost continuously, so you need to make sure you are ready. The aim of any warm up then is to gradually warm your muscles so that you can perform your best in the match. And because of the way you move depending on your game or position, the stretches should mirror your movements accordingly whether you’re a defender, hooker or goalkeeper. But remember, a warm-up must be initiated by a gentle jog, maintaining a normal, gentle stride. Later in the warm-up the stride pattern can always be varied. We have included a number of general warm-ups and stretches for four sports. To ensure that you’re match ready, whatever the weather.

Netball:

Football:

Jumping swats Stand up straight. Bend you knees slightly keeping your back straight. Then swat down with your head facing forward and back straight. Jump up, reaching as high as you can with you hands, and then land back into your starting position. Repeat.

Quadriceps Stand by a wall. Bend one leg up behind you using one hand to steady yourself against the wall and the other to keep your leg in place by holding onto your foot. To make the stretch, gently pull your foot upwards.

Frog Swats Swat all the way down to the floor with your legs spread apart. With your arms raised in front of you, lean forward very slightly and then place your elbows inside of your knees. Hold this position for 20 seconds. Injury prevention stretch! Single Heal-drop Achilles Stretch Stand on a step, or any flat raised object. Place the ball of one foot so that it s on the edge of the surface. Bending your knee very slightly, allow your heel to lower towards the ground. Repeat with the other foot.

44 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Hamstrings and lower calf Sit on the ground. With one foot extended out in front of you, extend your arm towards your foot. While sitting bolt upright, keeping your back straight, run your arm as far down your leg as you can. Lower back Lie down on your back. Pull one or both of your knees towards your chest while keeping your shoulders and head on the ground.

health & fitness

Sports scientists suggest that injury rates could be reduced by Rugby:

Hockey:

Reaching-up Shoulder Stretch Place one hand behind your back and then reach up between your shoulder blades.

Heel Digs Place alternate heels to the front, keeping the front foot pointing up, and punch out with each heel dig. Keep a slight bend in the supporting leg.

Lying Knee Roll-over Stretch While lying on your back, bend your knees and let them fall to one side. Keep your arms out to the side and let your back and hips rotate with your knees. Kneeling Quad Stretch Kneel on one foot and the other knee. If needed, hold on to something to keep your balance and then push your hips forward.

Shoulder Rolls For shoulder rolls, keep marching on the spot. Roll your shoulders forwards five times and backwards five times. Let your arms hang loose by your sides. Knee Bends Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your hands stretched out. Lower yourself no more than 10cm by bending your knees. Come up and repeat. Consult with your doctor before performing any physical activity. Visit www.rmmagazine.co.uk for more information on warming up.

Passing by the busy and bustling restaurant regularly, you immediately get a sense of the atmosphere and quality that The Shepherd & Dog exudes; a place to be seen, experienced and enjoyed, time and time again. Ambiently lit and effortlessly prominent, the enticing façade overlooking the gravel drive of dream cars, is nothing less than picture perfect. If this were a fairy tale, we’d be arriving at a castle, about to embark on a magical evening. Walking into the restaurant, we were welcomed and shown to our table. Lit to perfection, the atmosphere reflected the relaxed and ambient mood of the diners and staff. Exposed beams and high ceilings, the seating felt intimate and the arrangements were placed to provide an optimum dining experience. Smart with a touch of class, plus all the traditional aspects that you would expect to see in an English gastro pub, the décor oozed sophistication, perfectly complimenting each diner that sat enjoying their meal. We sat eagerly awaiting our server and discussed the surroundings.

If there happened to be a formula for getting the balance of service and cuisine right, The Shepherd & Dog has it. From start to finish, the host and waiting staff were attentive, genuine and polite, to the level that we never felt that we were waiting too long for anything or that they were arriving too frequently. Throughout the entire evening, the service was impeccable. The cliché of a mouth-watering steak and a fall-off-the-bone bass may lead you to believe that we’re lazily describing the obvious, but these terms are overused and under delivered in most establishments; not the case for The Shepherd & Dog. All cliché dining phrases can be found here, and only because the food is the epitome of quality ingredients that have been cooked to perfection and presented beautifully by impeccable waiting staff.

Overall Experience Unable to find anything to fault, it’s undoubtedly easy to see why you’ll have a tough time booking a table during peak times here. Completely on par with the food was the impeccable and faultless service; you really are made to feel special, and who, please tell us, doesn’t want that? Service: Impeccable Food: Incredible

Here’s what the RM team had to eat…

Starters • Salt & Pepper King Prawns served with tomato & sweet chilli fondue • Tomato & Basil Bruschetta with charred mozzarella, sweet Basil, aged balsamic & olive croute (v) Jade said: The king prawns were cooked to perfection; lightly fried with a mouthwatering spiced chili dip. Served on a wooden board and delicately decorated with bean shoots. Yummy. Mains • Steamed line caught Sea Bass with champ potatoes, braised baby gem & curried mussel veloute • 28 Day Aged 8 oz Sirloin Steak served with triple cooked chips, steak butter & Portobello mushroom Brooke said: Mmmmm Steak... Fantastic, simple, but cooked to perfection. I can safely say that this is the best steak I have had in a long while. The meat was cooked perfectly and cut like butter. Would recommend to anyone. Dessert • Sticky Toffee Pudding served with homemade custard or ice cream • Warm Chocolate Brownie served with white chocolate ice cream • Fresh Fruit Plate Amber Said: Exactly how a sticky toffee pudding should taste. I usually chicken out of going for the STP as I’m almost always disappointed, but judging by the meal I’d just eaten, I thought that it would be the perfect end to a totally scrummy meal. I was right. It was yum. Very very yum.

Reviews RM have sorted out your life for the next month. So don’t go anywhere or buy anything until you have read our reviews of September’s lust haves.

Album

The 1975 (The 1975) After the recent resurgence of vinyl – are we finally in love with good music again? Well if this album is anything to go by, yes! This is their debut album, co-produced by the band and award-winning music producer, Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Foals). So if ‘chocolate’ and a promised reworking of ‘Sex’ is anything to go by, expect a darker and even more ambitious sound from the Manchester based alternative rock band.

Film

Girl Most Likely Knockout cast in the form of Kirsten ‘Bridesmaids’ Wigg – Check. Failed attempt to get the boyfriend back – check. If anything sounds remotely similar to Bridget Jones with just a hint of Gossip Girl then we are definitely listening. This is a warm comedy about how the good life in Manhattan can go very very bad. But as it has Wigg, you know it’s a thinking comedy, so expect to laugh and cry. Out: 27th September 2013

Book

Revenge Wears Prada Remember the effortlessly cool ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and the super stylish film that it inspired? Well get ready for a super chic September as Andy finds herself in her dream life as an editor. But trouble is never far away and Miranda Priestly isn't the kind of woman who hides in the background. She's back...and more devilish than ever.

Out: 2nd September 2013

Single

Iggy Azalea "Change Your Life" ft T.I A lot of mystery surrounding this track – but we do know that it has been shot in Las Vegas with the two party-starters Iggy and T.I. Guaranteed to be an absolute banger of a tune. We can’t wait to hear more. Out: September 2013

6 Tips For Successful Property Investment We share ways of investing that can help you increase income and achieve capital growth through cash or pensions. We’ve found that almost everyone can relate to the growth and income opportunities associated with property, both here in the UK and worldwide. Property is tangible and if held long enough will always be a valuable asset in any portfolio. Our aim is to show you how to build your property portfolio in an affordable, stable and understandable way. Here are a few of the areas we will discuss with you to ensure you avoid the common pitfalls when investing in property: • Be clear about what to expect from your property investment – capital or revenue? Are you looking for a monthly return? Or do you intend to sell it and make a large cash sum? Understanding your goal will help you evaluate whether a particular investment is right for you.

• Ongoing affordability Is your mortgage rate linked to the base rate or is it fixed? How long is that rate going to last and what happens after the term is over?

Our aim is to show you how to build your property portfolio in an affordable, stable and understandable way.

• Check the local research about the area and tenant demand.Have you been to the location, how do you know this is a good place to buy? Ask local letting agents about local demand.

• Use a local letting expert or self manage? • Understanding what NET return you are getting f Even if the property is reasonably local to you, using an expert is still more beneficial as they or your money? Take the rent you expect to receive over a year, probably know the area better and they also know the law. minus all costs and then divide it by the total amount of cash you are planning to invest. Oh, what a V Festival never fails to disappoint. As soon as you enter the grounds you can feel the excitement of each happy camper, struggling to balance their excessive alcohol stash on top of their tents, sleeping bags and overfilled bags of unnecessary clothes. It’s the same every year, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. As with most festivals the age range varied, from the little ones accompanied by parents, to the funloving teens, the excitable young adults, and even the middle aged party lovers. It’s safe to say that almost everyone at the festival looked amazing and had spent a fair amount of time carefully selecting their outfit. Festival fashion is huge. Walking around, you could hear the classic “I love your top, where’s it from?” and the “your shorts are amazing, I need to borrow those,” compliments. As soon as the obligatory niceties where dished out, the music dominated any conversation. With many of the younger campers eagerly awaiting acts such as Steve Angello and Rudimental to dance and sing along to, while filled with alcohol and youth, they devoted their spare time to throwing shapes to some of the newest house music around. Rudimental themselves were impressed with the way the crowd couldn’t control their bodies once filled with their perfect summer tunes and joked “that was a workout!”

Most of the attention was around American R’n’B/ pop sensation and booty-shaking expert Beyoncé. Although her delay (possibly hair-piece-choosingtime overrunning – apparently she had 40 to pick from!) caused a bit of booing from the crowd, although the patient ones were still smiling and cheering, possibly from the alcohol – who knows? She finally appeared, revealing her sophisticated blonde bob (see, we knew it was the hair) and burst into song. The crowd loved it, for a moment every woman in the crowd felt powerful and couldn’t help but sing (screech) along to some of her biggest hits such as Who Run The World (Girls) and Love On Top. Even just for a weekend, there was a sense of togetherness; everyone wanted the same thing: good music, to dance like nobody was watching, fun, alcohol and a nice warm shower by the end! Granted, like any festival there’s a few that take their ‘banter’ too far, but overall V Festival is an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere is indescribable and most definitely needs to be experienced first-hand.

Looe Music Festival 2013 27th - 29th Sept in Looe, Cornwall Cornwall’s Looe Music Festival was launched in 2011 with a mission to bring the best live bands to the sunny little Cornish fishing port and have a big party on the beach at the same time. We became a charity in March 2012 and all profits are channelled into the following year’s festival or local community projects promoting musical talent and understanding. In only our second year the festival attracted a 5000 crowd with The Stranglers, The Skints, Levellers & Showaddywaddy headlining. Meanwhile, 60+ bands played across town, on the satellite stages and in the pubs. Local talent showed in force with all musical tastes represented from hip-hop to 1940s swing. This year will be even bigger and better with some major headliners promised. Last year sold out, so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

How did you fall into the music scene? Well it started off in around 2007 when me and a bunch of boys were messing around writing lyrics. It turned out to be something I really enjoyed so I carried on and started to record in my bedroom. This progressed to performing in and around London and teaming up with other young and unsigned talent. Where do you find the inspiration to write lyrics? I like to express myself and my current situations in lyrics – I find it helps my songs as none of the concepts are too thought out, it just comes naturally. I’ve also been inspired by a lot by rappers like Wretch 32 and Drake because they create more meaningful music than others in the game. What is it about music that motivates you to keep going? The lifestyle! I’ve always dreamed of chilling in a mansion and wasting time in the mornings picking what car I’ll drive that day! The motivation definitely comes across in a lot of my music, particularly Liquid Dreams and Who I Am, which are current releases from the new mixtape. You’re only 17, do you feel like you’ve had time to grow and change as an artist since you started? Most definitely, I feel like when I started out, the UK rap scene was much smaller and much less varied, but now in 2013 I’ve been able to branch out with my own music like other artists have, rather than sticking to basic rap/grime music. There’s a lot more inspiration out there now.

IDRIS IDRIS

At just the tender age of 17, he has his own mixtape, 6 years experience of writing lyrics, and some of the catchiest tracks around, RM had a chat with upcoming rapper/DJ, Idris Miles…

60 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Is there anything you look back on and think ‘wow, I’m proud of that’? My determination to stick with rapping has always shocked me, as it’s not easy as an upcoming artist striving to get noticed. I’m also proud of my performances over the years, and my recent idea of underground dance nights with my DJ collective ‘Essynth’. You’ve just released ‘Who I Am,’ what in particular did you want to get across? All the things I’ve just said about really – the song does what it says on the tin, it’s very honest. So what can we expect from you now, are there any new upcoming projects or any new tracks to look out for? Well my underground dance night is coming to Club Lounge in Dagenham on the 5th October, where I’ll be DJing the best in deep house. I’m also currently working on my debut mixtape ‘#ONEOFTHREE’ which will be coming out before the end of the year, so watch out for that! This Essex Girl’s 5th BBC Radio Playlist! The past few weeks have been filled with celebrations as we acheived my 5th playlist on BBC Radio2. I am absolutely over the moon to announce my single “The One” with Alistair Griffin was added to the B list alongside Justin Timberlake and Lissie! An Essex Girl up North! Having been convinced that fellow singer/songwriter, Alistair Griffin was going to murder me as we traveled through the moors late at night to get to North Yorkshire, I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it looked during the day by the coast. There, we filmed the video for ‘The One’. Here’s a sneaky screen shot preview from the vid! The official release date is 9th September and it will be available on iTunes.

An Essex Girl in Germany.... again! The band and I flew back to Stuttgart and played two shows with the fabulous Katie Melua. Finally Mercedes is almost ready to unveil the final member of its A-Class series: The GLA aka the first ever compact SUV Merc. And if you’re wondering whether this car has curb appeal, it’s probably worth mentioning that its direct rivals are the Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque.

It’s good for your figure too – this teeny tiny car is one of the lightest SUV’s around, although it is a touch lower and wider than other Merc’s in the same range. But the Mercedes blood runs thick through its veins, as underneath the bonnet you can still expect an A-Class performance. Unlike the A-Class though, where the engineering focuses on sporty handling and agility, the GLA is said to be set up primarily for comfort. Then there is the independent rear suspension, power steering and an optional four wheel drive. And speaking of four wheel, the 4x4 system is much lighter than any other rival on the market.

• Available with front and four-wheel drive

So what’s it actually like to drive? Well it accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds - as quick as a Focus ST - and hits a top speed of 145mph – pretty impressive stuff! But if you’re not keen on any dare devil driving, you’ll be pleased to hear that there are a number of advanced safety features are available as standard for all versions, including Attention Assist, Collision Assist and Adaptive Brake Assist. Optional extras include Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. So no need to panic if you need to park either – Perfect!

• Range starts with the GLA200 petrol (with 154bhp), and the GLA200 CDI (134bhp), both with front-wheel drive

But here’s the most important thing, it looks good. Really good. The aerodynamic design looks sleek and sexy, the specially shaped tail lights and under body panelling. Not to mention the metal-finish front and rear bodyguards, to give the GLA the look of a sexy, rugged man.

• Four-wheel-drive models, badged 4Matic, will get more powerful engines: the168bhp

And the surprises keep coming when you open the doors. Expect to find sport seats, circular air vents and iPad-like display screen. Plus if you’ve got an iPhone you’re in luck, as you can integrate it with the car and play your music which appears on the display – best delete all embarrassing tunes before you buy the car then! An optional Load Compartment Package allows the rear seat backrest to be adjusted to a steeper angle, creating an extra 60 litres of load space. Translation; a lot of space for shopping.

So far so impressive.

• Seven-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox will be standard across the range, but a six speed manual will be available as an option • GLA’s four-wheel-drive system defaults to front-wheel drive in most conditions (to cut emissions and fuel consumption) • On sale in November

So because it isn’t quite available yet, standard equipment is still being finalised. But a few things are for certain; 18in alloy wheels, digital DAB radio and leather- effect upholstery. And an optional panoramic glass roof with integrated front sunroof will also be available. Great for your image and definitely a car to be seen in.

• From £25,000 69
