Warley Park’s prospects look in fine hands over the coming years, with the young age groups having a tremendous season in 2013. The Colts team reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Essex Youth Shield, only to go down to a 3-2 defeat against Stoke-by-Nayland at Rochford Hundred Golf Club.

prospects look in fine hands over the coming years

Meanwhile, Ryan Cox and Bailee Curran have represented Essex at Under-16 level, with Joe DeFries and Edward Brown also representing the Essex U-14 and U-13’s respectively. Joe gave an enormous boost to the club’s fortunes by winning the season-long U-14 Essex Tour, a testing competition which attracted 70 contestants and was run over six different courses around the county. Edward was also delighted to clinch 2nd place overall in the final round. It’s not just the boys, either: Ellisha Cox played for Essex U-12s and Sophie Wheeler won county events, giving her strong prospects of playing for Essex in the near future. Within the club itself, Ryan* won the Midweek Club Championship at the age of just 15 by matching par over 18 holes then beating his 4 | rmmagazine.co.uk

father, a previous club champion, on the first play-off hole. However, he was beaten in the 2013 Weekend Club Championship by a fellow Colt, 16-year-old Tom Fenton, in a play-off. The pair had seen off the challenge of over 100, mainly adult, club members to top the leaderboard after 36 holes on a score of three-under-par. Baille, who is also 15, won the Colts Championship, beating both Ryan and Tom as he returned a score of two-under-par. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate and thank section organisers John Williams, Ron Lowe, Michael Cox and Elizabeth Brown, along with Wayne Selley and Russell Killington, the PGA professionals who are based at the club and who teach the colts. Having recently introduced some excellent family discount membership schemes, club manager Stuart Orrin is optimistic about the future: “The standard of our juniors at Warley Park is mind-blowing and interested parents from Brentwood and the surrounding area are fighting for an opportunity for their children to join the section. Although we are currently at our limit of 50 members, a few of the Colts will turn 18 soon, meaning that spaces will become available shortly."

From the

Editor Hello! Regular readers of RM Magazine will know that we have recently had a little shake up, which explains why I am writing this page. It is my first editor role, so while we are all new to this, I’ll let you have a peak at us while we are changing. Cheeky, but I think you’ll like what you see! Behind the scenes it is all go. So it’s lucky Hayley has written some great advice how to beat Mother Nature at her own game – from your skin to your hair. But when we’re not pampering, we are running around. This month alone we have been to the Launch of the Tresor Paris Nouvelle collection, Brownstock festival, interviewed the Fratellis, judged the Face of Essex pageant, and have even eaten the most amazing afternoon tea at Vertigo Lounge, Hornchurch. Have you ever noticed that there is something about celebrity culture that makes everyone want a good old natter. Two words: Miley Cyrus – and if you’ve got an opinion, let us know using #RMdebate. And I haven’t even mentioned Halloween! If you think you know about zombie films, then check out the Death Walks film feature. My highlight was meeting everyone on set, but let us know yours too. So after all that, I think we can have a small break – and luckily in this office the boys make their fair share of the tea! Just enough time before we start all over again! I hope you like it.

When GTA 5 came out my boyfriend took the day off to play it. Around 11o’clock whilst I was at work, he texts me asking if I had the electric key. Our meter had run out and the whole flat went dead. Oh, I can only imagine the look on his face!

I last smiled when my 4-year-old daughter said that she couldn’t wait to grow up and have a baby. My 7-year-old son very seriously told her how painful it was, and her eyes widened. She then very worriedly said, ‘mummy, I don’t want to grow up.’ Happy days.

I finally got round to looking at my holiday pictures! All of the good memories with my friends and family really made me smile on a cold October day

App-solutely fabulous! I just wanted to say that I think the Redlaser app is awesome. I read about it in the 5 money saving tips feature and now I use it all the time. Sarah, Hornchurch Amber says – Awesome. That was my favourite app from the feature too, and I am well and truly hooked on it now. I’m starting to become that weird person who is continually getting her apps out. Right on Time I would just like to say how impressed I was with your reviews page last month, the ‘Iggy Azalea’ single success & ‘The 1975’ No.1 were bang on target. Miss D Batey, Romford Ivana says – We keep our ear close to the ground in the RM office, and hate for our lovely 10 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Faux Pas Loved the Fashion Fails feature – Be honest, what’s your biggest fashion fail? Lisa, Maldon Hayley Says - It has to be my baby pink Juicy Couture velour tracksuit I got when I was 15. Teamed with my Lacoste trainers, I looked chavtastic. It may have been designer, but that didn’t make it fashionable! I blame J-Lo and Nicole Richie. LFW ATM The Surviving LFW was a God Send – the head’s up about the live streaming thankfully stopped me from feeling left out Kat, Upminster Hayley Says - Glad you found it useful! Who would have thought you could see the Burberry show dressed in a onesie with a cup of tea?

Every month we ask you to comment, share, and send your thoughts about RM Magazine to let us know what you’re thinking. Why? Because we want to know

Testing Times Test for the Best was so useful! Will this be a regular feature? Carrie, Rainham Hayley says - Happy to help! Yep, I love creating them as much as you like reading them. This month is eyeliners, so get your grunge on! That Explains It! The 5 Rubbish relationship rules could have been a fly on the wall recap of my love life – explains where I’ve been going wrong! Sophie, Writtle Ivana Says – Ha! If I wrote down all of my dating disasters you could write a whole book – So at least there are finally some guidelines! TxtTalk The sexting article caused a debate in my own home! And for the record, it is cheating! Kirstie, Chelmford Tony said – We like to get everyone talking – So why not use the hashtag #RMdebate to keep the conversation going this month?

Armpits What do Russel Brands armpits smell of? As he seems to be enjoying his own fragrance on the front cover. Amber says – They smell of argon oil. We can only guess that he uses this to keep his armpit hair soft. Who knows? Purse Size Are you planning to bring out a special edition “purse size” magazine for Christmas? Amber – Not anytime soon, but hey, if there’s a demand for it, why not? Although, we have to include a disclaimer that you absolutely must not read it on the loo. Because that’s gross. Interiors Great layout for the interiors page - I wanted to go out and buy it all! Amber says – Excellent, that’s the kind of reaction we look to create each month. If you do go out and buy it all (you’ve got good taste) then remember to say where you saw it first.

What’s hot right now.. Who

this month

This month we just can’t hide what RM loves. So sit back, relax and get ready to fall in love too.

What

BRIDGET JONES – Our beloved Bridget is back and more fabulous than ever in her new book Mad about the Boy. So get ready to receive more crucial dating advice as she takes on the modern world – with gems such as ‘do not text when drunk’ and how to navigate your way around Twitter. Welcome back Bridge, we’ve missed you. HARRY STYLES AND CARA DELEVINGNE Almost precisely a year after they were first rumoured to be dating; the pair were seen looking very cosy indeed at the Book Of Mormon on London’s West End. Please bare in mind that this was after Cara said that she’s ‘done with boys as they are only after one thing.’ Hmmm what changed her mind?

When

IT BY ALEXA CHUNG – Possibly the most chic and lusted after book. But when you do get your mitts on one, you will find beautiful fashion sketches by Alexa herself, along with her favourite photos and some comments and advice. Almost a new take on a scrapbook. BATES MOTEL – The first episode was shown on the Universal channel earlier in September. And with Halloween just around the corner, it is the perfect opportunity to catch up with this chilling reimagining of the classic film Psycho. The mesmerising Freddie Highmore might just be enough to keep you from hiding behind a pillow.

Wear KAREN MILLEN – The latest campaign has been shot by the legendary David Bailey! We expect big things this season from the luxe label. Nail Warps – Consider chipped varnish a thing of the past. The most fashionable fashionista’s are all wearing the Marchesa for Revlon nail wraps. Hello super chic mani, goodbye boring nails.

THE FACE – Sky Living brings you Naomi Campbell, Caroline Winberg and Erin O’Connor search for the latest supermodel. Think BINTM but more bitchy! Starts 30th. MERCURY PRIZE 2013 – We don’t know how they will choose between Disclosure’s Settle or Jake Bugg’s debut to name but two acts up for Album of the Year? Either way we will have to wait until the end of the month to find out.

Why THE VOICE – Seriously why do we have to wait until January 2014 to see pop princess Kylie Minogue and Co in the spinny red chairs? The obvious guess is less competition with X Factor, but either way we aren’t sure we have the necessary patience. LONDON FASHION WEEK AND WEEKEND – it was over far too quickly and we will have to wait far too long to see more catwalk beauties parading around again. Enough said.

Miley Cyrus get tongues wagging

If you’ve turned on a TV, read a newspaper or been on any form of social media, there’s no doubt about it, you’ll know about Miley Cyrus. She twerked so hard that she almost broke the internet, but will she ever manage to shake off Hannah Montana?

We all know how the story goes; Disney child lives their youth in the most sweet and innocent way imaginable. But then they grow up and desperately spend their rest of their years trying to shake off their sugar coated image. And to me, the most awkward thing about Miley’s recent behaviour is that it’s actually all been seen before. Despite all of her efforts to be controversial, it seems that there is no such thing as breaking free from Disney. The ‘break out’ performance at last month’s VMA’s revealed that Miley actually ‘Can’t Stop’ copying other artists – at 20 years old is she really just a little girl trying to find herself? After all bursting out of a racy skin tight outfit is probably even older than the disapproving mothers watching the performance. And Madonna, Britney, and Lady Gaga have already all been there, done that and got the T-Shirt. So is Miley actually just conforming rather than being controversial? By following in the steps of other pop princesses she has become someone who falls in line, follows the crowd and acts the way she is expected to. Miley has even openly admitted that she was just giving the public what they wanted, following her raunchy VMA’s performance saying “Madonna’s done it, Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, anyone that performs...that’s what you are looking for. You’re wanting to make history.” Opinions aside though, the facts speak for themselves. Tongue wagging, crotch grabbing, foam finger point and twerking earned Miley more tweets than the Super Bowl performance – and weeks later we are still talking about it. Her latest single Wrecking Ball received 12.3 million views in just 24 hours, and there isn’t a day that goes by that she isn’t mentioned in the media somewhere. Why? Because we still like hearing about her. The big question now is what will she do next? She has already sung that she ‘Can’t be tamed’ and said she is now acting this way because ‘she’s just being Miley.’ So will the next shocking revelation be that she is a follower rather than a leader? Has Miley actually become more like her alter ego by acting cliched? Watch this space.

Tartan...check! This A/W the catwalks have shown that tartan/check/plaid - whatever you want to call it - is definitely back this season. Marc Jacobs, Moschino, Versace and Celine all focused on punk inspired looks, and whether it’s a subtle check or a full on sequinned number like the amazing ASOS dress below, we haven’t seen one fast fashion retailer that hasn’t jumped on board.

If you can’t get enough of this print, rock the leggings from Topshop with a slouchy jumper and boots for a laid back look.

River Island’s oversized coat with the catwalk inspired ombre stripe is a modern take on last year’s parka. But if you want to take the tartan trend back to its heritage roots, Henry Holland has designed a gorgeous pini-kilt for his quirky H! range at Debenhams. Team this with a PU collar blouse for a great day to night look.

If you’re still not convinced, wear the pattern in small doses. The skater dress from Primark we’ve featured is perfect, as some attention from the check top is stolen by the leather skirt - another autumn essential.

Top of our wish list this month is the beautifully crafted Vivienne Westwood handbag. At over £300 it might leave you penniless, but it’s a stunning statement accessory that would leave you the envy of the office.

Fashion’s

Sinister Side 1.

Darker trends have emerged this season, but don't feel left in the shadows. Here's how to wear winter's most daring looks. Grunge and gothic trends are rebellious looks that have taken over this season.

2.

Tight leather and tartan pairings were seen at Givenchy and versace, while black figure-hugging floorlength gowns graced the catwalk at Giles Deacon. Fashion may have gone back to black, but do you know how to pull off these trends? Follow these rules to make sure your outfit is more fierce and less funeral. corset possibly required.

GRUNGE

d

Forget the chains and Mohawks of the 80s, the new punk is all about studs and leather. Think sexy rebel girl.

t

If you want to soften this look, throw on some fur. Alternatively go hard with the classic leather jacket.

d

Dressing head to toe in leather and black can feel a little gloomy. Break it up with a splash of pink to add femininity – yep, this year winter’s stolen this shade from spring.

t

When wearing check/tartan, make that one item your statement piece and keep the rest simple. For example, team a tartan skirt with a simple black top and heels.

6. 7.

8.

GOTHIC

d

Keep gothic romantic. Think lace, floral details, frills and floaty fabrics in black, burgundy and purple.

t

Add edgy touches with armour-esque accessories or leather details. By mixing feminine cuts and fabrics with embellished accessories you’ll look fresh from the catwalk, not Camden market.

d

The demure Goth and moody punk are in their element after dark. Sheer shirts and skirts with a slick of plum lipstick will heat up cold gothic looks, while leather skirts, crop tops and lashings of eyeliner will let grunge’s mussed-up hair down.

Award-winning UK jeweller Tresor Paris is known and loved, all around the world. RM were lucky enough to join the elite on the glittering launch of their Nouvelle Collection The occasion? The grand launch of Tresor Paris’ ‘Nouvelle Collection.’ Although only launched in 2010, the celebrity favourite has already been seen on some of the most elite wrists; from Grammy award winning artist Ne-Yo, Actress Jennifer Aniston, to singers Emeli Sandé and Jessie J. We guess they love the brand so much because the Parisian inspired crystal collection is defined by a unique, elegant style. The jewellery industry have quickly recognised the brand too, bestowing them with several prestigious awards. So understandably, the brand owned by renowned diamond expert, Hasbani couldn’t be understated, and we weren’t disappointed. The Winter/Spring collections are the perfect accessory for the season. Inspired by nostalgic decadence and chic, modern opulence. The latest collections featured new editions; the vintage inspired Bellatrix collection, alongside new collections; Cygnus, Neptune, Orion and Bella Rose, plus many more newly released pieces. But the real stars of the show were the charities Tresor Paris were working with this season.

with Tresor Paris and extremely grateful for their generous support. This beautiful range of jewellery will help Marie Curie nurses to continue to provide free hands on care to people all with terminal illnesses and vital emotional support for their loved ones.” Alan Lamb on behalf of Rugby for Heroes went on to add, “We thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous launch party where our new range was on show, it was a hit with all that attended.” Patron Mike Tindall and his wife Zara Phillips must think the collection is a big hit too – they’ve already been seen proudly wearing their bracelets. Famed for designing jewellery to help raise money for charity, the guests of honour were representatives from the charities that they are proud to be heavily involved with at the moment; Rugby for Heroes and Marie Curie Cancer. Also, Breast Cancer Care, a charity they have worked with since October 2011; the partnership has raised £70,000. Prices for most charity items start from £19, with 25% of all proceeds going directly to those charities.

The fabulous evening ended with entertainment by the incredible Sarah Cassidy from The Voice, and cheeky magician Josh Brett. And the treats didn’t end there. All guests were handed a goody bag as they left, filled to the brim with makeup from Krynon, a beautiful monogrammed Tresor Paris pen and Moisturising Gel from Love Your Skin. And of course, a beautiful Tresor Paris bracelet.

Arun Sharma on behalf of Marie Curie said of Tresor Paris, “We are delighted to be working

hether your complexion is young and fresh-faced or more mature, put the barrier up against wrinkles and decrease the crease.

Winter’s harsh weather and air conditioning really take its toll on the skin, and soap, air conditioning, a windy day, and even certain moisturisers can strip your skin of precious moisture. Health and Beauty Therapist Chelsi Cordaroy from Romford’s Tranquillity Spa shares her expertise on how to combat fine lines. What internal factors cause skin ageing? Wrinkles stem from the collagen in your skin, which reduces naturally and when you’re dehydrated. If you’re cleansing and moisturising, you’re keeping the skin hydrated and stopping the cells from drying up. What external factors cause skin ageing? Sun damage is a huge cause of wrinkles, along with smoking. If you use sun beds or smoke, you need to make sure you’re moisturising a lot and have a strict routine. Exfoliating is essential for keeping skin refreshed, while masks are great for a weekly stimulation. Do wrinkles vary depending on your skin type? Yes, everyone’s skin is different and will age at a different rate. Dry skin ages ten times quicker than oily or combination types as oily skin is moist, so skin cells do not dry out and cause fine lines as easily. How can we prevent wrinkles naturally? Drink plenty of water (eight glasses a day is perfect) and eat foods rich in anti-oxidants like blueberries. Calcium is great for your skin, which is why you get milk cleansers; it’s calming and hydrating at the same time. Obviously don’t smoke, and use SPF products, even in the winter.

22 | rmmagazine.co.uk

What age should we start using products? Daily cleansing and moisturising in your teens kicks off the fight against wrinkles. You should start using creams, serums or masks from about 25 years old, as you won’t be going through hormonal changes any more. But never use antiageing products if you’re not cleansing already. Can you start too early? Yes. If you’re using anti-ageing products younger than around 25, they can make your skin sensitive because they’re renewing cells. Some brands, particularly the ones that aren’t natural, are very rich in products, which can cause problems when you’re older. Eye serums especially can thin the skin because they’re so rich, causing soreness and even sensitised skin. Can we tell if our skin is damaged? Not all the time. You may think it’s healthy now, but a lot of skin damage like liver spots come out darker in the skin later on. If your skin is damaged it’s best to exfoliate; when my clients haven’t been scrubbing regularly, I can tell. Tell us something about skin that not a lot of people know A lot of sweets have colorants in them and that’s quite bad for your skin. When I was a kid I had eczema and I couldn’t have Skips or Smarties because the colorants reacted badly to my complexion. Some Indian foods contain them too.

Test For The Best:

Punk is in the air and it brings with it a storm of smouldering eyeliner tricks and flicks. With make-up shelves overflowing with gels, liquids, pens and pencils, it’s hard to know what to choose to achieve this rock and roll look. We’ve tested an array of liners so that you can pick your bad-ass ally for the season with confidence.

L’Oreal Super Liner Gel Intenza, £9.99 This soft gel has serious staying power and is easier to use than liquid liners because of the accompanying brush. Despite staying perfect for well over 12 hours, it’s easily swept off with make-up remover.

5/5

5/5

Rimmel ScandalEyes Eyeliner Kohl pencil, £3.99 This velvety pencil glides on your lids and stays put. Its jet black colour is also waterproof, making it perfect for the wet and windy weather ahead. However, because the kohl is so soft, you will need to sharpen it more often than your usual liner.

3/5 Revlon PhotoReady Intense Eye Liner and Brightener, £5.99 Eyeliner can make eyes look smaller, but not with Revlon’s new double-ended pencil. Use the white pencil along the waterline to make your eyes look bigger and brighter, or to create monochrome flicks if you’re feeling brave. But like most pencils, it does run a little after few hours.

3/5 4/5 Rimmel ScandalEyes Precision Micro Eyeliner, £5.49 This fine tipped pen has all the precision of liquid liner, but is less messy and quicker to use. As the tip isn’t drenched in liner, if you want a rich black colour you have to go over your line a couple of times. It also dries quickly, but if it gets wet, its waterproof claim is not as impressive. 24 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Benefit Magic Ink, £15.50 The brush on Magic Ink is thin with perfect flexibility, so you won’t flick black freckles across your lids, pull the skin, or struggle to create a smooth line. It also stays on pretty well and has an intense black colour that doesn’t fade.

Smile likyeou mean it... October 4th is World Smile Day and if there’s one thing the average Essex girl loves more than fake tan, it’s a perfect set of pearly whites. Follow these tips for beautiful teeth and lips.

beauty

L’Oreal Colour Riche in True Red (£8.69)

Lips 1.

2.

3. 4.

Protect. Harsh weather means a chapped pout – ew. You can protect and moisturise them with an inexpensive lip balm like Vaseline’s new limited edition Paint The Town Lip Therapy (£3.49), which cares for lips and adds a light red tint. Hydrate. Your lips will begin to feel tight and dry if you are dehydrated, so drink plenty of water. Central heating can cause this problem, so a humidifier could come in handy through winter. Plants can also act as humidifiers, so we guess Mother Nature isn’t always harsh. Exfoliate. Even your lips need a regular exfoliation. Using a soft toothbrush, buff Vaseline in circular motions over lips to help to remove dry skin. Follow with a moisturising balm. Diet. Vitamin B deficiency can lead to chapping. Make sure you’re tucking into plenty of eggs, meat, nuts, pulses, fish, bananas and whole grains.

Teeth 1. 2.

3. 4.

For a sparkling smile, try wetting your teeth or putting a dot of gloss in the middle of your lower lip just before a photo. If you have yellow or off-white teeth, avoid lipsticks that are deep, dark or bright, and choose a shade with a blue undertone. Try L’Oreal Colour Riche in True Red (£8.69), which stays put and also lightly moisturises lips. Putting your tongue behind your teeth when smiling will relax your face. Floss! It’s not the sexiest thing in the world, but once the plaque and underrated stains in between your teeth are gone, your smile will look far more glamorous.

Paint The Town Lip Therapy (£3.49)

Health 1. 2. 3. 4.

Showing your pearly whites slows the heart, temporarily reduces blood pressure and relaxes the body, which lets the heart work without overworking. Smiling helps the body relax and lets the immune system react more quickly and effectively against invaders. Forget laughter lines, studies have found that grinning naturally lifts the face, making people look on average three years younger. Smiling and laughing have been shown to reduce stress and lessen pain, as they release endorphins. So next time you’ve got menstrual cramps, be happy about it, okay? 27

. . . . f o s e d Fifty Sha

Hunnam

Despite growing up in the tough, gritty reality of the 1980s north-east, Charlie Hunnam admits that home comforts are always difficult to beat, as RM magazine discovers... It is doubtful as to whether E. L. James was thinking of a lad from Newcastle upon Tyne when she wrote the stupidly successful erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, but it says absolutely everything about Charlie Hunnam’s career that the actor has gone from a broken home in the northeast, to being cast as the most famous literary character of recent years. Indeed, Hunnam’s journey from Byker Grove regular to the part of Christian Grey has been astounding. On the way, the 33-year-old starred in Queer as Folk and Sons of Anarchy, overcame his parents’ divorce, as well as living through the difficult economic realities of Thatcher’s Britain. His rise to the top can’t have been something he could have imaged ever happening? “No, it wasn’t,” he begins, with a broad smile. “In the 1980s, Newcastle was a very socially and economically depressed place. I always was a really weird existential little kid, and not to take anything away from those people because they are amazing salt of the earth kind of people, but I would look around and think, ‘God, life is so grim up here.’ “I would think, ‘what were people’s intentions when they were kids, what did they dream of?’ because everyone was just so involved with the gritty survival of life. I was a weird kid who enjoyed watching movies, and at some point, those two things connected and I felt like if I could spend my life working in film – it was an escape route from that dark reality. I knew I wanted to look back on my life and feel I had spent it doing something important.” In Queer as Folk, he played gay schoolboy Nathan Maloney. The importance and significance of this character in 1998 was full, and the impact of the role is something that Hunnam appreciates still to this day. “I had kids writing me letters, telling me the show had literally saved their lives, saved them from suicide. They’d say how they were feeling dejected and that they didn’t know how to live. Then they saw this character on TV brought to life, going through all the same struggles, and at the end, prevailing.

“Just recently a friend of a friend of mine was cutting someone’s hair. The client was talking about the show, and said, ‘We are exactly the same age, so when Queer as Folk came out, I was like a 17-year-old kid, living in very conservatively, non-accepting of gay culture, and just feeling like I wanted to f*cking die. And when I saw that show, I just thought, ‘I am getting out of here and going onto greener pastures, because if that kid can do it, so can I.’” The part catapulted Hunnam to prominence, where he has remained ever since. Sons of Anarchy - “far and away the greatest creative experience of my life so far, I love it and I am really proud of it” - made Hunnam’s name on the other side of the Atlantic, where he now lives with his girlfriend. Unlike many in his position though, he just wants to keep a low profile. “Making movies is what motivates me, not any of that other stuff. My life is so boring and quiet - I leave my house to go to the movies, go to the grocery store, go to the gym or to work, and that’s it. I don’t go to parties, I don’t live it up with the Hollywood crowd. None of that crap interests me at all.” Instead, Hunnam wants to concentrate on his work. And no sooner has Fifty Shades of Grey been put to bed, that the actor is now plotting his next move. “For me, writing is a big part. I write all the time. I write screenplays, I am a workaholic and all I feel l want to do with my life is make movies and act and write. And maybe direct sometime in the future too. I just want to make sure that work is fun. That’s what I feel is important.” And getting back to familiar shores? “I love the UK, and coming back home always feels special when you’ve been away for a while. It takes time to readjust to life over here, but what I’ve always loved about England is that it’s real and genuine and honest. You’d be surprised how rare that is.”

Beauty with a Purpose F

orget the clichéd tears, tantrums and tiaras that are usually associated with beauty pageants – Face of the World only want role models parading their inner beauty on the catwalk. RM Magazine went down to the first ever Essex heat to cheer the girls on.

On Sunday 15th September, the stunning Harefield Manor Hotel in Romford become host for the Face of Essex, also known as the regional heat of the international beauty pageant, Face of the World. This was a beauty pageant with a difference. But before you roll your pretty mascara covered eyes at the cliché of it all, stop. This pageant pushed the stereotypes aside. No one is taken at face value, and despite this being the very first year that an Essex heat has taken place – we didn’t see a single hair extension, layer of fake tan, or even a white stiletto.

The pageant’s director, Danni Mannix explained that they only wanted to see beauty from within. And she should know, as the proud winner of last year’s Miss Charity of Europe. “I decided to not only have a pageant title, but to start working for the company because I loved it so much.” And true to her word, none of the girls were judged on their looks, because the sole focus was to find role models. A pretty daunting task considering winners from Dubai, America, India, Napal and Russia to name a few, meet for the grand finale which is held in Disneyland Paris, a place where dreams supposedly really do come true. Contestants can represent their county, their country or the world – it is up to them how big they want this opportunity to be. It is difficult to know how to judge inner beauty, and the most inspiring moments came from the mentions of work for brain charity, Headway. It was explained that the pageant doesn’t just raise money, it builds priceless relationships with the clients, which has been very inspirational for the girls, raising over £50, 000 since the pageant began three years ago.

The evening had to be judged though, and the tough job was given to MP Andrew Rosindell, X Factor singer Lucy from 2 Shoes, who delighted the crowd with a few songs, RM’s own editor in chief Tony Wittridge, Arathi Menon, Face of Europe 2012, and Rebecca Bowler, Face of Essex 2012. They decided to award the Face of Essex to Georgie Holland, while the runners up were; Sherry Platts, Clare Winters, Grace Unwin & Director’s choice Rachel Downey. Well done to all of the girls, and a special mention to the overall winner Georgie, who knows first-hand how important the charity work is, having suffered a stroke at the tender age of 18. Gisele Buckingham, the brains behind the pageant said, “We feel Georgie will be an amazing ambassador for Essex and the Face of Europe & The World, and we look forward to seeing her in Disney.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: Visit www.faceofeurope.co.uk 33

In the news:

Enough to make you Yawn We have all experienced a little friendly rivalry in the office, or even amongst our friends. But the latest craze of women bragging about their sleep deprivation could cause damaging effects. Beware the cult of Collective Fatigue Disorder. How many of us are guilty of giving the answer, ‘I’m fine, just tired’? Too many. A new report in the US found that 16% of women would say that they are ‘very tired every day’ compared to just 9% of men. Should we be outraged? No, women are proud of this fact. Sleep deprivation has been revealed as the ultimate status symbol and a sign that you can have it all, according to a Grazia magazine report. Collective Fatigue Disorder, to give it its proper name, relates to the humble boast about how exhausted, stressed, busy, and overworked our lives are compared to others. Imagine conversations starting with “You think you’re busy, I have just…” and you get the idea. In short, women are given too much pressure. We desire to emulate modern power-women such as Facebook chief Sheryl Sandberg, who live immensely successful lives but never seem to pause to draw breath. Have you been busy managing one of the largest company’s out there, whilst juggling being a mother and inspirational speaker? Oh, and have you written a book too? No? Well you’re not working hard enough. At least that’s how it feels. Even on a smaller scale, the infamous work/life balance is exhausting. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to cook an organic meal from scratch, finish your work early, go for cocktails with the girls, and fit in a few witty tweets as well. Grazia asks, “Could our constant juggling, and the exhaustion that it causes, actually be holding women back?”

34 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Professor Jim Horne, author of Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep said: “On average women need 20 minutes more sleep than men. They tend to multitask, meaning they use more of their actual brain than men do during the day, so their need to go into recovery mode and disengage from the senses is greater.” And speaking of multitasking, we are also working what is known as the ‘second shift’, the name given to remembering and organising the smaller things like birthday cards. Grazia wrote: “We expected the difference to be smaller when couples both worked full time, but in fact it is even bigger.” The author, Kate Wills, then explained; “I think this is because working mothersfelt so guilty, that they had to overcompensate and remember even more.”

So it’s no wonder that Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington said sleep is “The next feminist issue.” It would seem that we are our own worst enemies because of high expectations, but life is too short to be so knackered that you can’t enjoy living. For the first time ever, women are the main breadwinners in four out of ten households, yet still do 70% of all housework. We might have more equality in the workplace, but old habits die-hard at home.

A Day In The Life Of…

An International Sporting Star?

International table tennis star and number one senior women’s player in Essex, all at just the tender age of 19. RM caught up with Evangeline Collier to find out just what her life is like as an international table tennis champion.

What do you think has been your most memorable day? Sweden was probably the most memorable. It was the first game I played after I had broken my foot. So I didn’t know what to expect. But I beat four world ranked players and that was really special.

Why did you chose table tennis as a hobby, is it something you have always wanted to do? When I was seven, it was a compulsory sport at Trinity private school, Brentwood. I loved it and even used to go to school early to practice. The coach there is called Nick Jarvis – now the head of performance at the ETTA (England Table Tennis Association), who said that I “quickly proved I had something special.” But this is because I was in good hands.

What sort of advice would you give to other people who wanted to pursue a career in table tennis? Stick at it, even if it’s hard or you’re having a bad day. But make sure you enjoy it, or there is no point. When you enjoy it you always work hard and it does pay off.

So going from when you started to where you are now, is it what you thought it would be like? There have been a few real setbacks like when I was 11, training highlighted a gap in my shoulder, causing me pain when I played and keeping me out of sport for an entire season. Plus in 2011 I broke my foot when I started at Granthan College. But luckily this all made me more determined. What are the best and worst things? Travelling! But the whole atmosphere makes up for it all. When I got to the Belgium team cup final for a team called Diest; there were 600-700 people watching us but only four teams competing. It was incredible. We didn’t win overall, but we were amazed at who we beat rather than where we came. So what sort of things would you change if you could? I don’t think I would change anything. I have learnt so much; from coming back from injury to nutrition and a good work ethic. I wouldn’t be the person I am today, so I wouldn’t change a thing.

What awards/qualifications do you need to be taken seriously in the sporting world? If you want to start coaching, you need to get qualifications and ETTA. But otherwise you need to just play and practice. Desmond Douglas is probably the most famous table tennis player in England, who now goes to scouts at competitions and is part of the ETTA international selection panel. So if you’re good it will be noticed and nurtured. What key skills do you need? Determination because you will experience knocks, but don’t forget that everyone does, so keep going. Then there are the core skills such as balance, endurance and relaxation. If you’re tense you will never win. What sort of salary can you expect? Currently the Belgium team pay my expenses. But if you are ranked in the top 10-20 players in the world, you could be looking at an actual salary in excess of a reported $100,000 a year. So what’s next for you? I am going to Nottingham Trent University to study sports education and special and inclusive education. I want to help children with special needs compete in sport as well. Really long term though, I would like to play for England at the commonwealth games.

is the new

If you stop and are very quiet, you will be able to hear the sound of women everywhere rejoicing. Ladies are finally being encouraged to swap yoga for weight lifting and prove that weights are more important that waifs.

N

ew York woman know a good thing. They have inspired us in Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, and with the latest fitness trend that we hope is more than just a fad. So forget crunching over a sad bit of lettuce, jutting hip bones and size zero, because our neighbours across the pond are dropping the ballet barre and raising weights instead.

36 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Yes really. In a city traditionally obsessed with size zero, more and more women are joining forces and descending on the nearest gym that runs High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes. These are the sort of classes that rotates cardio with weight lifting circuits – a sort of high intensity Pilates based workout. And they are showing absolutely no sign of slowing down.

health & fitness

...even A-Lister Jennifer Aniston strengthened her routine by adding resistance bands to prep for her role in ‘We’re the Millers.’

The result? Women are getting stronger and healthier due to the new regime, and their bodies are becoming more toned and lean. So far so good when it sounds like you can lose weight in a healthy and effective way. And for the ladies who have tried the new HIIT workout, the results speak for themselves. Just ask 24 year old dance student Alex Rhea, who we probably should mention is an ex size zero. Alex has commented that her body went from childlike to strong and feminine after switching to a HIIT routine. A big difference from her past gruelling routine of seven hours at the dance studio followed by an hour gym session after to sweat it out on cardio machines like the StairMaster. “I thought [my former cardio workout] was making me stronger. In actuality, it made me much thinner and weaker. Looking back, I was probably just worried about staying fit and keeping my weight down.” The best part is that Alex has successfully gained 20Ibs of muscle in a healthy way. Her secret? A high-intensity, Pilates-based workout with weighted bungees at Chaise23, a Flatiron studio owned by fitness guru Lauren Piskin. Alex was so pleased with the results she has seen for herself that she has now ditched the dancing and become an HIIT instructor instead. We predict that this new regime is here to stay too. After all, Alex’s conversion from dance to weights is not isolated. In a city where skinniness is close to Godliness, women are jumping off the endless cardio treadmill and picking up kettle bell weights instead. Slowly and steadily instructors in the Big Apple

are seeing a noticeable decline in the amount of attendees in a yoga class, versus strength and cardio burst classes. The science behind the high intensity interval training can be seen to be believed. Such classes emphasise bursts of cardio and weight-lifting circuits, resulting in a toned, lean, sinewy look — and increased physical power. Don’t believe us? Well even A-Lister Jennifer Aniston strengthened her yoga routine (and her body) by adding resistance bands to prep for her stripper role in her latest film, ‘We’re the Millers.’ For athletes who already do interval training, you might want to dig deep and push yourself a little bit more. Martin Gibala, a researcher at McMaster University has found; “upping the intensity with short bursts of speed may provide new benefits. Your cardiovascular system gets stronger and pushes more oxygenrich blood through your body. Muscles get better at using that oxygenated blood. Your stride becomes more efficient as coordination between the muscles and nervous system improves. The perks may even extend to reducing your risk for chronic diseases by improving blood sugar control.” And it’s not just people’s bodies that are changing, their opinions are too. Several gym instructors have commented that women now desire long and lean, defined muscles – not your typical catwalk waif. Want more evidence? Ladies are flocking to bootcamps like the Refine Method and the Fhitting Room who have adopted and now teach the HIIT philosophy. Kari Saitowitz, the Fhitting

Room founder and Harvard Business School grad, became a HIIT convert after she ditched mindless cardio about six years ago to take classes to achieve the flat stomach she had always coveted. But even more impressive than that is the change to their minds since ladies have started HIIT training. A flat stomach is all well and good, but everyone in New York who was questioned said that they now feel strong and powerful. Weight lifting, kettle bells, or even squats are great – but the fact these women now feel energised and body confident is really quite incredible. They have put in the hard work and carved out a womanly figure – celebrating and embracing their curves, and now they have more energy to go about their days and show that there’s nothing a woman can’t do. So expect the next trend to be one that teaches the men how to gain the energy that they need to keep up with us!

If you’re reading this on a lazy Monday, half way through a sluggish Wednesday, or even desperately clockwatching on a Friday, a sweet, sugary treat could be just the boost you need. But the guilty extra pounds that it adds to your waistline might not be the only side effect – perhaps it’s time for a detox

How many of you enjoy a teeny, tiny biscuit or a chocolate bar to help you through a long day at work. Us too! And it’s not because we can’t get through the morning without a sugary coffee that made us think; it’s because if we do happen to miss our usual sugar fix, we often transform into a cranky and short-tempered crazy person. Then there are the other effects. The desperate battle of man v food as soon as there’s an event that we need to look our best for. Trying to shift a muffin top bigger than any you can buy in a bakery is no easy task. It will be a hard one to kick with even safe foods like fruit and low fat yoghurts containing ‘hidden sugars’ giving us a lack of energy and even wrinkles. Something has to be done. Luckily some very clever people have also noticed the problem that many of us have with our cravings for a sugar rush, and there are two detox diets in particular that has caught our eye. Both are quick enough to help your sugar fix – not to mention the benefits that will make your test of will power all worthwhile.

The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger by Brooke Alpert and Patricia Farris - £6.17 Kindle edition The Sweet Poison Quit Plan – by David Gillespie - £7.99 (RRP)

The first is a three day sugar detox, which might sound manageable but most of us easily exceed the NHS’ recommended daily allowance of about 70g of sugar a day for men and 50g for women. The Sugar Detox, by Nutritionist Brooke Alpert and dermatologist Dr Patricia Farris claims the nasty effects from sugar can start to be reversed in just three days! They write: “Sugar truly is addictive: Your body reacts to it like a drug and craves it constantly. What we’re asking you to do is to quit - cold turkey.” So the fix involves “no dairy, no fruit aside from lemon or lime, no wheat or starches, and no added sugars.” This means breakfast consists of eggs, lunch is salads, such as poached

chicken on a bed of leaves, and dinner comes in the form of protein, such as grilled fish with a selection of vegetables. After the initial three-day detox, some sugar is then re-introduced as the diet progresses to make it more manageable. Another option is based on the book The Secret Poison Quit Plan by David Gillespie. The premise is very similar but without the three day short, sharp, shock. It claims that for sugar cravings to truly subside, it will take between two and four weeks of strictly no sugar. The author believes the hype – he lost six stone though simply cutting down sugar. Without exercise. If you follow this diet and don’t let a type of sugar called fructose back into your diet, you will rarely want sugar again. Fructose is the hidden sugars hiding in all sorts of food from processed food to fruit. But it won’t be easy to go cold turkey if you have a serious sweet tooth. Tests have shown the addiction to sugar is comparable to nicotine. And during withdrawal of a high sugar diet you could even display similar symptoms to heroin addicts such as chattering teeth, anxiety and shaking. The easiest way to avoid the hidden sugar is to cook for yourself. So get ready for a diet of whole foods such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, cheese, butter, natural yogurt, milk, cream, oats, pulses, nuts, wholemeal bread and brown rice. Afterwards you’re allowed a maximum of two pieces of fruit a day, the best low-sugar choices being kiwi fruits, berries and pears. Making everything from scratch isn’t always practical or desired – but we can’t sugar coat type two diabetes, prematurely aged skin or mood swings. It seems like we are all hooked on the sugar rush, but beyond the occasional treat we are now heading for a sweet new change.

The End of Fat ProFit$ for Just a few weeks ago a former Jenny Craig consultant apologised for giving her clients unhealthy advice and a negative body image. It takes a lot for someone to speak out, even more so when they are speaking out against a health giant. So how bad is the advice really? The weight loss/weight gain problem has been a long running issue that too many of us are all too familiar with. And the biggest problem? Well that would probably be when the definition of a healthy body changed in the early nineties. To be more precise it was the 3rd June 1997 – the date the World Health Organisation (WHO) gathered at a consultation in Geneva to discuss the country’s weighty problem. Ever since the 1970’s our weight, as a nation, had been steadily increasing. Food companies were making lots of tasty but calorific new food and we were eating it. Twenty years later in the 1990s this became a growing problem for the NHS along with the country’s waist lines, mainly because the BMI ‘overweight’ category was changed from 27 to 25. And just like that, millions of people around the world went from normal to overweight. And since the problem is an ‘epidemic’or medical catastrophe –it implies that it can be ‘cured.’ The even bigger news than that is the fact that the food companies accused of making us fat are also responsible for making us slim. Weight Watchers was bought by Heinz in 1978, the liquid meal replacement plan 40 | rmmagazine.co.uk

Slimfast, was bought in 2000 by Unilever – the brains behind Ben and Jerry ice cream. Finally there was the American diet phenomenon Jenny Craig, which in 2001 was bought by Swiss brand Nestlé – the very same people who also bring you chocolate. So as everyone trying to help you is also hurting you – we risk being trapped in this cycle for a while. But people are taking action and the angel companies that we now know can make us fat and thin, have had to face several scandals, none more so than Jenny Craig. Earlier this year they were heavily associated with the horsemeat scandal – found not guilty. But that wasn’t to say that their representatives were happy. Just a few weeks ago a former Jenny Craig consultant made a very public apology to all of her former clients via an open letter on her blog ‘yourfairyangel.com’ after giving them what she called “bad health advice.” In a clearly heartfelt blog post, Iris Higgins said: “I am sorry because many of you walked in healthy and walked out with disordered eating, disordered body image, and the feeling that you were a “failure.” None of you ever failed. Ever. I failed you. The weight loss company failed you. Our society is failing you.” Ms Higgins worked at Jenny Craig for three years, and in her letter she apologised for a number of mistakes she felt she had made; including giving bad advice for thyroid issues,

not addressing body dysmorphic disorders, designing diets with too few calories for both pregnant and non-pregnant women, as well as recommending fad diets. Now, Ms Higgins is a gluten-free health blogger, the former consultant could not express her sadness enough for all of her “beautiful” former clients whom she “wronged.” It is difficult to say how long other people have felt unhappy with this diet, but in 1994, Jenny Craig Inc. settled a lawsuit from 360,000 clients in California after it was alleged that products could cause gall bladder disease. And according to the LA Times there was a $10 millionpay-out despite the company admitting no wrongdoing. Not to mention comedienne, Mara Shapshay, who is suing Jenny Craig after claims her weight loss products caused her to have a miscarriage and left her needing 1,000 gallstones removed. In a statement made to MailOnline, a Jenny Craig spokesman said; “While Jenny Craig is sympathetic to any person suffering from medical conditions, it is irresponsible to claim that the Jenny Craig program was the cause of these issues.” We say isn’t it about time that we love the skin we’re in? If you are unhealthy, there are safe ways to change, but a quick change is bound to leave you out of pocket and with a bad taste in your mouth.

Vertigo Lounge Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea is becoming increasingly more popular, and indulging in a little afternoon delight is firmly on the menu at Vertigo. And of course we mean, the sitting down in a restaurant and eating food with friends and family kind, of course. So with so many restaurants offering Afternoon Tea, how do you know where to go to get your scone fix? The RM team were invited down to Vertigo Lounge in Hornchurch, for a rather delightful spot of Afternoon Tea; don’t mind if we do. Walking into Vertigo, you’ll immediately notice that its décor is chic, modern, and classy. Urban class in the heart of Hornchurch highstreet. Upstairs in the restaurant, new manager Jamie showed us to our table; a large round surface in the center of the room surrounded by ten chairs, with a large vase complete with beautiful flowers making up the table’s center piece. Glass tea cups & saucers gave a modern twist on the typical doily and floral decoration usually associated with Afternoon Tea; this was truly a 21st century tea party for the modern day customer. Contemporary glass, three tiered stands filled with sandwiches, cakes, and scones began to descend upon the table. Scones, finger sandwiches, teacakes, and with an abundance of tea, we all began to descend upon the delights that were set out in front of us. Light, fluffy scones smothered with cream, bright and colourful teacakes, and soft tasty filled to the brim sandwiches were soon devoured. And it was good. Washed down with a selection of tea, our little treat for the Afternoon had come to an end, but what a lovely time we had. A jolly good afternoon if we don’t say so ourselves. Overall Experience So if you’re looking for a sociable Afternoon Tea in a great location with attentive staff that’ll fill you up till the evening, then Vertigo Lounge is the perfect location for a spot of Afternoon indulgence. music interview

Another band trying to be different? Actually no. They seem to be a truly unique five-piece band. Ranging from the genuine friendships between Trevor, Tom, Harry, Holly and, Joe to their eclectic sound. So we’re not looking at future rock stars then? Not quite. Expect to see appearances from the drums and the bass guitar – but the rest of their sound has been put together to create their own unique blend of ‘folk ‘n roll.’ Or in the band’s own words; “Think Tom Waits running away from Thom Yorke, because he wants to give him too much of a cuddle.” Folk Music? Are we looking at the new Mumford and Sons? Again no. Everything from the ukulele to the tambourine and even the bouzouki is 100% Fancy Dress Party. They’re hard to define, but if you love honest and organic music, then these might be your new favourites.

Everyone’s roles in the band change depending on the song. Meaning they decide on the instruments they will play based on their mood and the audience’s. Sounds risky Indeed. Anything could happen, from turning up on stage in boiler suits to impromptu comedy, even re-enacting The Who and smashing their instruments in a drunken haze. In short, they are only on stage because they love music, not because they want to be famous. So if you want to catch them, don’t hold your breath for an X Factor appearance, because these guys are one of the most authentic bands around. www.facebook.com/thefancydressparty www.soundcloud.com/thefancydressparty

A new boy band, tell me more. Well, they’ve been going a few years now, but in their own words, Will, Nick, Steve and Joe formed the “rock, indie, dance, pop outfit” from an idea they had at school. And the rest, as they say, is history. Weren’t they on the main stage at Brownstock? Yes! But they say it has never really got more serious than their school days. They still love what they do, and other people are trying to get more serious with them, and they aren’t very good at that! Rest assured though, the boys put on a real show, complete with confetti cannons and ninjas.

Haven’t they toured as well? Yep, if they sound familiar, this year alone they have played Chelmsford’s Fling Festival, as well as London and Brighton and Paris. You have probably already heard their stuff Their single ‘People’ was available to download on iTunes and Amazon. And a Sony record label sold five of their songs to MTV TV shows like Jersey Shore, sparking original fans and American ones to argue online over who heard the band first! Things are really picking up for the band, so make sure you catch them while you can! www.facebook.com/stealingsigns

An Essex Girl on ITV! Since my last column I took some time off and spent it in Egypt with my Mr All About You, whilst I was there I received a phone call informing me I was booked to perform my latest single, “The One” on national television.... the day after my return flight! “The One” is a duet with fellow singer/songwriter, Alistair Griffin, and we were to perform it together live on ITV’s This Morning. I really wanted to share this experience in detail exclusively in RM magazine, because I can honestly say it is both the most daunting and exciting experiences you can have as an artist- a live tv performance. At 7:45 the car that ITV had sent arrived outside my house, and of course- me being me; I wasn’t ready... I was still colouring in the faded parts of the boots I was going to wear with liquid eyeliner.... glamorous right? Ha! I arrived at ITV an hour later, and went straight into hair and make up ahead of rehearsal. The rehearsal in itself is very strange, you see the amazing set for the first time, the room is tiny compared to how it looks on television, the floor team and camera crew are so friendly and helpful, so I started to chill out a bit... just a little bit! Just before I’m due to go on, I can hear Chris Moyles (who was also a guest on the show) outside my dressing room talking to my manager... I know I have to do my embarrasing vocal warm ups... god knows what he must have thought... but they had to be done! As I go onto the set camera ready during the commercials, Phil and Holly both thank me and Alistair for coming on the show... which is surreal in itself lol... and suddenly there is a man behind the camera counting down from ten. My heart starts beating crazy fast and suddenly, in this tiny room with only a few dozen people in it, we are being broadcasted to millions of people. Looking into several different cameras all swooping and zooming like scary robot monsters, we sang our sweet song of which I am so proud of. It really was a top moment in my career and I am extremely grateful for it. Leddra Loves The Silver Fox Phillip Schofield has been supporting my music for a while now and I genuinely think he still one of the best presenters on television. Thanks Schofe! 51

The Festival season is well and truly over now, and looking back it might all seem like one big blur. But we bet Brownstock will still stand out as pretty unforgettable. On the last weekend in August, zebra burgers, fun fair rides, a crash landed space ship and deafening base, made over 6, 000 music lovers forget that they were on Morris Farm in Essex. It was the weekend where live cabaret, a paint fight, and the shisha tent’s smoke signalled the end of summer. But what a way to finish. In just nine years the festival has grown in both size and popularity, until it is now virtually unrecognisable from the overgrown house party that it once started out as on the Brown’s family farm. Jess Brown said; “It wasn’t even really intended, like all of the best things in life, it just sort of evolved naturally. That’s what makes us authentic, even down to the venue being a real working farm.” And what we noticed was that it had stuck to its roots of rearing local talent; “It’s actually a real play on words as when we don’t have this festival we are rearing cattle. Essex has such a wealth of unsigned talent, it’s great to discover it. But at the same time some of the headliners we have had over the years, Pendulum, Example, Labyrinth, really enjoy the smaller venue. Even Matt Cardle. He was the first guy to stand up on the Brownstock Stage and then went on to win the X Factor– Now I’m not saying it is a coincidence …” joked music director Matt Dixon. 52 | rmmagazine.co.uk

The weekend saw standout performances from Tom Odell, The Fratellis and Professor Green on the main stage, effortlessly bringing the audience to their feet. Not to mention an impromptu crowd surf by the Pigeon Detectives. Later in the evening, everybody headed over to the Good Shed dance tent, where the highlight was a DJ set by Mark Ronson, who created such an atmosphere that we could have easily been at an Ibiza closing party. The perfect cure for the following morning was a relaxing swing in the hammocks, or a lounge around the new Muscle Beach Reggae Bar complete with beach, deckchairs and boats. For a little more culture, there was always the Piano Bar or a bit of celeb spotting on the VIP Party Bus. But for the more hardy festival-goers, the best place to start was the new Slippery Saddle Saloon Bar to recharge. But in total, Brownstock depicts the original meaning of a festival. It is a celebration of people, food drink and dance. The music was important, but the festival was the experience as a whole, which is why it won’t grow any bigger. But don’t panic, it is still Essex’s festival for the residents. People have arrived wearing five year’s worth of wrist bands like a badge of honour. In short, it really is ‘A beefier bash’ and with plans in place for next year, we have already reserved our tent pitch. We can’t wait to return. After a knockout headline performance at this year’s Brownstock festival, The Fratellis are finally back! Jon Fratelli spoke to Ivana Sidey about their new album, ‘We Need Medicine,’ and assured her that it’s stuffed with of enough tunes to match their skinny jean swagger For those of you familiar with The Fratellis, you will know that they are a little bit glam, and a lot more retro than most. But for those of you who don’t know them, they are the Glaswegian indie rockers who first burst through our stereos way back in 2006. Their debut album, Costello Music, delivered the complete musical package. There was nothing cynical or contrived about it. The band looked like they sweat rock’n’roll, and I’m not just talking about their big hair, skinny jeans and sulky poses. They share a genuine love for the music, bringing us gems such as Henrietta and the anthemic Chelsea Dagger. Almost a decade later, that riff is still belted out by friends, signalling the end of a great night out. But time has passed; the band separated and then went on hiatus for three years. So why are they back now? Jon told me in his thoughtful Scottish tone, “I have no idea how to answer that! Why not now, you know? It seemed like a good idea on that day, and it hasn’t seemed like a bad idea since. Plus it’s always nice to hang out and play music with your friend, but in the meantime, I didn’t have a break from myself, so it’s odd when people say welcome back.”

So upon their return, are they still the sound of a generation? Jon explained; “I’d hate to think that we’ve grown up. No one ever wants that! But the music kind of has to be similar to our past two albums in that it’s the same three people, the same writer and the same vocalist. It’s impossible for it not to be recognised. It has to be because of those elements, but if things hadn’t changed then time wouldn’t be doing its job properly. Saying that there will always be the same thread that runs through what we do.” Sighs of relief all round then. It’s good to hear that the Fratellis sound will still be gracing our radios. When you have been making music so successfully for so many years, you know how to generate the results. They are a band of principles, based on what they think is great rock and roll. “We might have a few more big songs too, if the people like them. But you’ll know it is us when you listen, we can’t really be anyone else.” And with an album out this month and a tour starting in November, it will be hard not to listen to them. Welcome back boys, and welcome back to good old fashioned rock and roll. For more information: Single: Seven Days, Seven Nights – Out Now! The most talked about horror film of the year is set in a shopping centre. But if you think you’ve seen it all before, Ivana Sidey says, think again. Death Walk s will add a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘Dying to go shopping…’

And the assertive statements didn’t seem to be of particular concern. After all, Death Walks was never meant to be a film that crept into people’s consciousness. The psychological zombie horror has been ranked as the top British horror film currently in production, and the eighth highest British film currently in production by the film website IMBD – which bases its rankings on the interest people have shown online; many have been from overseas, creating Hollywood hype on zero budget. Absolutely everything is being donated to the project free of charge. This included cast, crew, the derelict Pulse nightclub, and the entire Mercury shopping centre. No one has ever attempted a zero budget film on this scale before, with a high quality look and feel. So what can we expect? All I know is it starts with a group of people in a shopping centre as it is closing up for the night, when the security guards see a lady at the door and let her in. But by bringing her into the centre, they unwittingly invite something else in too.

The psychological zombie horror has been ranked as the top British horror film currently in production

“It is nothing like you’ve seen before - the twist will make people’s jaws drop,” said a confident Spencer Hawken, who certainly knows how to sell his directorial debut with Death Walks. When we met on set, which incidentally is the Mercury shopping centre in Romford, the sterile glare of the flashing torches catching the faces of the bloody extras didn’t seem to phase him.

The psychological thrills and dark plot are to keep people on the edge of their seat. Although natural comparisons to Dawn of the Dead end there. George. A. Romero may have defined the genre, but Spencer isn’t doing a bad job of turning that on its head. But for a really good zombie film, you still need a few key elements. Below is why I think the film will be horrifyingly good: Claustrophobic There has to be a very real impending sense of danger throughout. Perfect for the large cast in the small Mercury centre. Scott Mullins who plays Rob said that “Pulse nightclub is also great. We have filmed in the bathroom and the lights were flickering on and off – it looks like a readymade film set and different to anything else I have worked on.” Save them! Strong characters are key so the audience care whether they live or die. When the claustrophobia is strangling them, you are nervous too. Arguably the most famous member of the cast is Lucinda Rhodes, with 15 years acting experience. Her character of Louise is described as “a bit of a man eater” when she is not nurturing the young talent such as Joanna Finata and Scott Mullins. She told me how much she adored being an actress but loves producing too. “I wanted so much involvement in Death Walks because I love the script, wanted to support Spence and, of course, be a part of a local film.”

heading

Support will be given to the new cast too. People from Romford may have the strongest feelings towards Martin Holland, who plays Andy; based on the real Andy who is the actual head of security at the centre. Not to mention model Kelsey Cain who plays Poppy; a zombie who holds the key behind one of the twists. She is looked after by Orina White, AKA the compassionate Lisa. No doubt the film will give their careers a boost as cast members have already been grabbed for bigger projects, such as the Hollywood film Rush, and BBC’s Downtown Abbey and Sherlock.

But lovely to an extent – there will be a body count, and those who have seen the popular film poster will have noticed the sufficient amount of blood involved. So while there will be psychological thrills, there will be a very visual feast too – after all, it is a zombie film!

No Reasons is a bloody horror about a missing girl, with a fairly small budget of £30,000. Road Rage due to go into production next summer, will focus around a series of murders with the bigger budget of £120,000.

No one has ever attempted a zero budget film on this scale before, with a high quality look and feel

Gore Galore The make up in this film is truly incredible. Everything about these zombies is different. The special effect makeup artists like Cat Forsyth have taken have created an entire new genre effortlessly. Cat told me that the new look was created using gelatine. “I have to make it at home because of the no budget. We are applying that directly to the actor’s faces – to make the zombies look different, not B-movie stuff. And we have had creative control. So it feels like our film as well – which is lovely.”

So, if you’re after a twist as big as Cabin in the Woods, a marketing campaign on par with The Blair Witch Project, and a genre defining British film like 28 Days Later then don’t go anywhere. Keep your eyes peeled for information leaked from the Raindance Film Festival, Cannes, Montreal, Venice and Toronto. And it has already caught the eye of the film industry, as Spencer and Lucinda have recently received £150, 000 funding for two more independent films for Hawken Rhodes Productions.

But for now Spencer explained “We want people to want to see Death Walks.” And that’s the real unique thing about this film; more than creating a new genre, Spencer and Lucinda have created a film that listens to the people. It is set in Romford with residents as the cast. So a film by the people for the people? Maybe he has created the American Dream without spending a single dollar. I can’t wait for its release. Five Money Saving Tips For….

A Scarily Good Halloween Party As autumn slowly starts to creep its way into winter, it’s time we all cheered ourselves up and got ready to celebrate. That’s right – Halloween is just around the corner, providing the perfect excuse to dress up and an even better one to party! Costumes Around the Halloween season, costumes will be at their most expensive, so if you have the time, a few extras from a craft shop could just do the trick. It will give that dress a new lease of life and make it a horrifying head turner. Or for something less subtle, the ever popular coloured hair spray or even hair chalks are great for a quick fix. If you don’t have the time to search for props, maybe some neighbours have the perfect outfit to loan you? BOOTS - Colour Xtreme Hair Art Spray 75ml - £2.99 CLAIRE’S ACCESSORIES – Large spider hairband with wired legs - £10 Accessories Always check around your home first, and never forget the difference accessories and make up can have. A Halloween themed manicure will look chic, and if you live close to a fancy dress shop, they are likely to sell coloured contact lenses or lashes that are guaranteed to give even the most modest outfit a scary twist. And last but not least, the more conventional accessory of a handbag, so if you have an old bag that you don’t mind making a little more seasonal, decorate with some red paint for the ultimate blood-stained Halloween look. POUNDLAND – Horror make up kit with blood - £1 TESCO - Elegant Touch Glitter Nails – Red - £7.10 Food If you are hosting your own party, this is pretty crucial. Halloween is the time of year when people expect everyone to let their hair down and just have fun, so make the food as glorious or as gruesome as you want. The best thing is that it doesn’t need to be expensive; all it takes is a little imagination. For example boiled beetroot is a perfect ingredient, as it turns everything a gory shade of red. Or for a more expected dish, you’re going to have to carve a pumpkin! If you have children this is really perfect.

Our favourite is: Zombie Fingers Cut a sheet of ready-made puff pastry into thin strips, about 1 cm wide. Wrap a strip around a frankfurter sausage, leaving a little of the sausage showing. Brush with milk and bake for 20mins at 200ºC, 180ºC fan, gas 6, until golden brown and cooked like a crispy zombie fingers. Ketchup blood optional. Entertainment There’s the traditional apple bobbing and the new favourite, ‘haunted box,’ where a small hole is cut in a shoebox, ready to be filled with tricks and treats. But our favourite is the Eyeball relay - for a ghoulish egg-andspoon race, split your party into teams. The first person on each team carries a spoon with a Ping-Pong ball ‘eye’ to the end of the course and back, passing it on to the other member. The fastest team wins! Décor Everywhere you look now, you’ll see that the shops are full of Halloween decorations. From tablecloths to lanterns, to cobwebs made from torn up cotton wool. To create a real atmosphere though, you’re best to dim the lights, put a scary film on, and have a few candles lit to create a few spooky shadows. Spiders and spider webs are always a great accessory to any Halloween party. You can cut out black cats, witches’ hats and spider silhouettes using black card, and stick them to the walls and doors. Music Every party needs a good atmosphere to really get going. So stick the radio on, download your favourite spooky songs and play them loudly around the house. Or to really scare your guests, download some scary sound effects to get them in the mood for ‘Thriller’ later!

“Sharing ideas to increase your income for today and your wealth for tomorrow.”

How to get more from your savings. We have many clients relying on the interest they receive from their savings to support low incomes. If those savings are in banks and building societies low interest rates mean this is becoming impossible without dipping into the capital, and so they are losing money. A recent article in the Telegraph by Dan Hyde on 31st July 2013 reported that the interest on longer-term savings products has fallen to a nine-year low. For example, the average interest paid on one-year bonds has fallen from 2.06% to 1.85% in the last month alone. It is the first time the figure has dropped below 2% since records began in 2004. The Telegraph also discloses that banks and building societies have since January knocked nearly £850m off the annual interest paid to savers. The cuts coincide with banks making billions of pounds in profit in the first half of this year. Research by our team showed the highest fixed rate for a £10,000 1 year term bond according to moneysupermarket.com on 13th September was 1.80% gross which equates to £180 before tax and £144 after 20% tax deducted.

Working with reputable and well established partners we have shown our clients how to achieve 12% fixed income on a 1 year bond, so on that £10,000 investment they receive £1,200 before tax and £960 after 20% tax deducted. This can support low incomes and avoid the need to dip into capital.

Big is Beautiful

Everyone’s favourite Fiat family has expanded, adding not just another member, but a bigger, bolder sister to the sassy 500. But is bigger better? Do you even need to question something that has Italian design? The all new 500L is designed for customers who want a car that combines the 500’s unique personality, with added practicality, capability, size, and even five-doors. Sounds perfect. But if you are also a new member to the Fiat family, don’t fear. The 500L mixes user-friendly technology with plenty of space, all wrapped up in one cheeky package. After all, Fiat is practically a by-word for style and innovation. So it is great if you want more than just a practical car. The clever team behind the car have designed it with an effective use of space, meaning maximum comfort with minimum dimensions. It can easily accommodate five passengers with five suitcases – perfect for road trips or families. 66 | rmmagazine.co.uk

The 500L also has a spacious feel thanks to extensive glazing. This includes windscreen pillars and its cabin has 22 handy compartments to hold everything from mobile phones to an umbrella. And the boot isn’t just big, it’s clever too. The standard Cargo Magic Space enables objects to be separated in the boot so fragile items can be kept safe. So what’s the downside? Actually everyone who has seen it loves it, so much so it has already been made a five-star car crash safety by Euro NCAP. And what is the drive like? Well, before you even get in you’ll be spoilt for choice, it has the widest range of colours in its segment. Compared to its rivals it has the cleanest petrol engine, the best passenger volume index, the biggest touchscreen radio and the largest electric glass roof on sale. There’s an enormous range of options specifically designed to make life better, such as the three trim levels; Pop Star, Easy and Lounge, or the four engine options. So this really is ideal for the fashion-conscious, with more than 100 exclusive accessories to choose from. It even has its own personal

trainer. Eco:Drive LIVE helps drivers reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by monitoring driving style in real time and giving tips on how to be even more eco friendly. The Fiat has really followed the slogan of ‘more space, more possibilities.’ The 500L has become the first of the company’s cars to use the new UConnect touch screen infotainment system. This allows media players and mobile phones to be connected to the car and controlled via voice, the steering wheel or touch screen. And there are some other unique options. It’ll become the first car ever to have a Lavazza coffee maker built into it. There is even a Beats by Dr Dre in-car sound system for technology lovers. In short, we adore this big car. It has kept the chic and sassy energy we loved with the original 500, but now, there is even more to love.
