HEALTH PROMOTIONAL SERIES

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

It’s a new year, which means it’s high time to kick-start your plan to lead a healthy lifestyle. Remember, however, that taking care of yourself is a process, and the most effective way to meet your personal health and fitness goals is by making incremental changes in your life. One good habit is likely to lead to another. To help you get started, we called on several health and wellness experts to share their best tips for implementing lifestyle changes in 2016.

FORM HEALTHY HABITS It sounds elementary, but simple resolutions are easier to keep. Take, for example, these recommendations from Gerald Cleveland, director of the health promotion & wellness program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas:

A journey of 10,000 steps a day begins with one device to track them.

1. GET MOVING. Create a daily goal or use an activity tracker. It may be the motivation you need to get more exercise. “Recent studies have shown that people who wear a device that tracks the number of steps they’ve taken each day are more active than those who don’t,” Cleveland says.
