The first quarter of 2015 is over, and we at the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber are ready to face a new period of exciting events, networking, and business-building opportunities. For the second quarter of the year, we will continue to hold the above-mentioned events. In addition, we are honored to announce the creation of the Southpointe Chamber Veterans Committee.

The committee is chaired by Robert A. Murray, a 20-year US Army veteran in good standing. He is forming a group consisting of military servicemen and those interested in supporting veterans.

The mission is to provide resources and funds to local veterans who are in need of services.

Business Profile Southpointe Telecom and SatCom Attend Marcellus-Utica Midstream Conference From January 27 to 29, Southpointe Telecom Technology and SatCom Digital Networks had a presence at the Marcellus-Utica Midstream Conference and Exhibition. The event was held at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Presented by Hart Energy (producers of DUG East), the conference and exhibition was well-attended by executives involved in the shale industry. Sponsors, speakers, exhibitors and attendees had plenty of networking time during the threeday event. Top midstream analysts and experts presented the latest production estimates from the Marcellus and Utica shales, among other informative topics.

Don Hodor, President/CEO of Southpointe Telecom, and David Chisolm, President/CEO of SatCom were in

attendance to represent their companies. Both reported leads from the event. Dave Chisolm stated, “The Hart Energy Conference is an excellent event for meeting decision makers in the oil and gas business. We had very detailed conversations on how to keep the communication link between well sites and corporate offices, even when phone lines, internet lines and cellular signals were not available.”

Industry Overview Marcellus and Utica Shale Landscape – An Overview

Physical Geography Pennsylvania accounts for the majority of Marcellus production, with counties such as Bradford, Greene, Lycoming, Susquehanna, Tioga, Washington, and Wyoming as the foundations used by one study. The Marcellus shale natural gas field lies below much of Western Pennsylvania as well as parts of New York, Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland.

The Utica shale, on the other hand, is located a few thousand feet below the Marcellus shale. The Utica shale has only been explored in Western Pennsylvania and in the St. Lawrence Lowlands of Quebec, Canada. However, limited testing suggests that the Utica shale will be a tremendous fuel resource.

Size of Resource and Activities Shale energy contributed almost US$284 billion to US GDP in 2012. The industry supported 2.1 million jobs in 2012, and is expected to support 3.9 million jobs by 2025.

Another study predicts that the Marcellus shale will be the biggest driver of US gas production over the next couple of years. It is estimated that it will account for close to 25% of domestic volumes this year.

Overall Development Climate and Expectations Despite some barriers such as the decline in automobile gasoline price, the consensus among experts appears to be positive for the continued growth of the Marcellus-Utica shale industry. The innovative production techniques being used by US oil and gas companies to extract natural gas (horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing) are ushering in a revival of American maufacturing..

Opportunity for Small-to-Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) A great opportunity exists for manufacturers, including SMEs, to supply the energy industry with solutions that will drive down costs. For example, the projected increase in the production of ethane would be critical to the manufacturing of chemicals and plastics.

Virginia to EQT Midstream Partners LP for about $1 billion.

The sale to its publicly traded midstream subsidiary includes $997.5 million in cash and $52.5 million in common and general partner units.

EQT (NYSE: EQT) has entered into a 10-year contract for capacity on the system, which connects EQT's 76,000 acres in northern West Virginia. The system includes 70 miles of natural gas gathering pipeline and nine compressors, and a 30-mile wet-gas header pipeline to a MarkWest processing plant.

It is the latest in a string of sales of midstream acquisitions from EQT to EQT Midstream (NYSE: EQM), which has also included the Jupiter gathering system in Washington and Greene counties for $1.18 billion in April 2014 and the Sunrise Pipeline in Greene County for $507.5 million in July 2013.

Classical Dance and Timeless Culture So what exactly is Shen Yun? “Shen Yun literally means ‘the beauty of divine beings dancing,’” says Julianne Xu, one of the company’s bilingual presenters. “It’s a very rare

kind of arts group, something you don’t see even in today’s China.”

Perhaps part of what makes Shen Yun extraordinary is the amount of obstacles it's up against—just like the Monkey King, the magical creature who must overcome dozens of demons, attacks, traps, and temptations on his sacred journey.

Shen Yun has set out to revive China’s lost heritage, which has been destroyed under decades of communist rule in China. It's not an easy task, but it's one that Shen Yun performers are most passionate about. Their program of masterful dances and songs is traditional Chinese culture as it was meant to be a study in grace, fluidity, balance, and inner strength.

“It was an extraordinary experience for us and the children,” said Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett after seeing Shen Yun in Australia. “The level of skill, but also the power of the archetypes and the narratives were startling.”

Another special aspect of Shen Yun performances is its core of classical Chinese dance, an age-old art form complete with its own system of training and movements. Dynasty after dynasty, it was passed down among the people, in imperial palaces, and ancient plays. Thousands of years have refined it into a distinctive dance system embodying traditional aesthetics.

But does traditional mean... rigid? Not in the East.

Classical Chinese dance is actually known for its expressiveness. Dancers can vividly depict a wide range of emotions and virtues—righteousness, loyalty, benevolence, tolerance. Movements can be masculine or soft, vigorous or graceful, somber or playful. An accomplished performer makes them seem effortless, but the hundreds of movements and postures require perfect coordination of the entire body that takes years of rigorous training. A dancer’s every cell from toes to fingertips, from the angle of the head to the direction of the gaze must be in perfect harmony.

What’s more, in classical Chinese dance, a dancer’s inner world is just as important as the accuracy of his or her movements. Particular attention is paid to synchronizing breath and gestures, making movements appear to emanate directly from the dancer’s soul.

“I want the audiences to realize through our show that there is more beyond the materialistic things in life, so even when they are depressed, they can pull themselves through,” says Shen Yun principal dancer Chelsea Cai. Alongside classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun features a variety of folk and ethnic dances, presenting China’s rich tapestry of cultures. The show takes you riding with Mongolians across vast grasslands one moment, climbing up the Himalayas or drumming on an ancient battlefield the next.

Is it Heartburn, Or Something Else? Toshitaka Hoppo, MD, on GERD Some mistakenly view it as ‘excess stomach acid’ or ‘the price we pay’ for living in a stressful, fast-food consuming culture, but twenty percent of Americans have acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as GERD – a chronic, progressive digestive disease.

Many rely on over-the-counter medicines (Prevacid®, or Prilosec®) to feel better Dr. Toshitaka Hoppo temporarily.

That might be fine on occasion, says Dr. Toshitaka Hoppo, Allegheny Health Network esophageal surgeon and researcher, specializing in the treatment of GERD, swallowing difficulties, and other esophageal diseases. But if the reflux continues, and use of these drugs (called proton pump inhibitors) is becoming habitual, there is reason for concern.

“Many people misunderstand: these medications do not stop the movement of these juices up the esophagus, and do not prevent reflux,” says Dr. Hoppo, who practices at Peters Township Health+Wellness Pavilion on Rt. 19, and Canonsburg Hospital. These gastric juices irritate, inflame,

and, in time, damage the esophageal tissues. Long-term use of acid reflux drugs affect the body’s absorption of calcium, which can increase the incidence of osteoporosis or osteopenia, (brittle bone disease) which in turn, sets the stage for hip fracture and other bone breakage, he says.

GERD is caused by a weak lower esophageal sphincter muscle, which comes into contact with the stomach at the end of the esophagus. If this muscle is weak, it cannot adequately prevent the movement of the stomach’s contents, including gastric juices, back up into the esophagus. What makes the sphincter muscle weak? “We’re not always sure,” says Dr. Hoppo. “but the weakness and damage is caused by pressure – too much exertion in that area, pregnancy, and obesity, all put high pressure on this muscle. There may be also be a genetic link.”

Dr. Hoppo stresses that the first step of successfully treating GERD is getting a complete and accurate diagnosis through esophageal testing. GERD, a progressive disease, if not treated, can lead to serious complications, including esophageal cancer. Symptoms include heartburn and regurgitation, coughing, hoarseness, and trouble swallowing.

In some cases, making dietary changes, losing weight, and limiting or quitting alcohol use and smoking can help manage these symptoms. At the Esophageal and Lung Institute, Dr. Hoppo and his colleague, Dr. Blair Jobe, a nationallyrecognized expert on esophageal diseases, specialize in advanced, minimally invasive procedures to successfully treat GERD, and restore a better quality of life to their patients.

The Southpointe Chamber Veterans Committee Holds a Well-received Dinner

The dinner was well-attended, with over 100 guests, who included veterans, business executives, and local government leaders. The event was conducted for the purpose of raising awareness, funds, opportunities, and services for our local veterans.

The evening was both solemn and commemorative, in gratitude for the veterans’ selfless sacrifice for our country.

Senator Camera Bartolotta presented a recognition certificate to Robert Murray for his leadership and initiative with the project. Robert Murray, chairman of the committee, is a retired Army Major with 20 years of service.

Congressman Tim Murphy congratulated the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce through a video presentation. Don Hodor, Executive President of the Chamber, was the master of ceremony for the occasion.

Boston Market (Anita Clark) sponsored the sumptuous dinner. Other sponsors were CAL Center for Innovation (Dr. Steve Whitehead and Chris Allen), Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce, Southpointe Global Marketing & Consulting, and Southpointe Telecom Technology (Brad Herman, Director of Communications, operated the video, projectors and audio).

Exhibitors and auction were also part of the event’s activities. Exhibitors included My Diamond Jewelry Store (with owner Donald Duffy donating a ruby circle necklace for the auction), Coldwell Banker, Mike McCormick (Washington County Commissioner candidate), California University of PA, and Waddell & Reed. Also auctioned were a one-year Southpointe Chamber membership and a therapeutic massage (courtesy of Ahhh…a Massage Experience).

Donations will be used solely for veterans, with the mission of providing resources and funds to local veterans who are in need of services. City Mission, one of the organization attendees, also announced their support for veterans through “Operation StrongVet.” A website page labeled “Veterans Committee” has been developed on www.southpointechamber.com. The site contains updates as well as forms for contributions and volunteers. Most important, it has an application form for local veterans in need of resources (including financial, educational, marketing, business, social, etc.).

Announcements will also be made at forthcoming Southpointe Chamber events and campaigns.

Drillers' New Techniques, Experience Cut Well Costs, Boost Yields

Ray Walker often invokes a favorite saying when asked how shale gas companies can increase production by 20 percent or more while cutting spending on drilling by more than 40 percent.

“The rock rules,” said Walker, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Range Resources Corp., repeating a phrase he used during the Fort Worth-based company's most recent earnings call. “When you're in the core ... of a play, that means you have the best rock, and the best of all those technical things that make the rock produce more,” he said.

With natural gas prices at their lowest levels since 2012, companies need to squeeze more gas from that rock in the Marcellus and Utica shales, and do it more cheaply. By focusing on drilling in core areas with improved technology and demanding cheaper rates from contractors, they say they can meet production goals during the spending crunch.

“It's really related to efficiencies and connected to having more experience,” said Mike Endler, vice president and Appalachian regional manger for State College-based Rex Energy.

Two Range wells illustrate the strategy.

A little more than a year ago, Range returned to a Marcellus pad where it had five producing wells. It drilled two more wells with longer horizontal lengths and used a fracturing technique — called reduced cluster spacing, or RCS — that increases the amount of perforations in the shale, to release more gas. In their first year, the wells produced 53 percent more gas per foot than the older ones on the same pad yielded in their first year. And despite the longer laterals, the new wells cost $850,000 less each.

“We made a lot of technical improvements in the way we target, exactly where we place that lateral in the rock,” said Walker, who declined to identify the well pad's location. The cost savings occur in using existing pads and access roads, and reducing the time it takes to prep, drill, frack and complete a well.

“We've just gotten better over the past two years,” said Walker, whose company is Pennsylvania's most prolific driller and third-largest shale gas producer with 773 wells. Rex is No. 17 on the list of shale producers in the state with 117 producing wells. Like Range, though, it's looking to increase production while cutting capital expenses this year by more than 40 percent. It's using a combination of more sand, longer laterals, better drill bits and less time at the wellhead.

“We've been doing this for over five years now. Our contractors have 50-plus well pads under their belts. That lowers costs,” Endler said.

Operators pay for drilling rigs and many contractors on a per-day basis. More experience with the Marcellus shale and Western Pennsylvania topography, relying on existing infrastructure and better techniques cut those days and the resulting cost. Five years ago, drilling a Rex well took 20 to 25 days. A year ago, its contractors had it down to 16 to 18 days.

Endler said drilling a 5,000-foot lateral now can be done in two weeks or less. That has helped cut the average cost of a Rex well in and around Butler County to $5.5 million from $5.7 million just a few months ago, CEO Tom Stabley told analysts last month.

That price cut comes despite the fact Rex is using more sand in the fracturing process to prop open more cracks in the

shale. Last year, Rex used an average of 1,800 pounds of sand per foot of lateral when fracking a well. This year it brought online four wells on its Powell pad in Penn Township in which it used 2,300 pounds per foot.

The Powell wells are producing 9.3 million cubic feet of gas per day, 13 percent more than what the company reported from its new wells in July. In addition to spending less time drilling and fracking, producers have gotten contractors to lower daily rates that Walker said grew from 2011-14, as demand for service crews outstripped the number of firms.

Since December, Range cut its well costs by more than 23 percent by negotiating lower rates from contractors, who are finding less work as companies dial back drilling. Endler and Walker made it a point to say the companies are not cutting corners on safety to cut prices.

“Range is actually stepping up its efforts when it comes to working safely and protecting the environment,” Walker said, noting that accidents, spills and other incidents can hurt the bottom line. “In 36 years, I've learned if you can keep production online ... that is going to drive you to be a low-cost producer.”

Southpointe Chamber member courts national TV shows Southpointe Chamber member and Breast Cancer survivor Susan Castriota is once again in the national spotlight for her innovative design that she hopes will change the way we microwave. Castriota has invented a glass lid to replace what she calls “those nasty plastic lids and plastic wraps” that many of us use in the microwave.

When Castriota was diagnosed with breast cancer, her daughter suggested that maybe it was time to stop using plastics in the microwave. Many studies have been conducted by experts in the areas of nutrition, metabolism and cancer that have found that some plastics have been shown to leach toxic chemicals when heated.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that plastics leaching into our food during the cooking process may contribute to the increased incidence of cancer or other health problems. As the debate continues, Castriota decided to error on the side of caution and not use plastics in the microwave.

Unable to find a safe, universal glass lid on the market, children’s book author/designer Castriota went to work on developing one herself. The patented CUCHINA SAFE LID, or SAFE LID, is the non-toxic alternative to plastic lids, wraps and paper towels commonly used in microwave cooking. The televised home shopping giant QVC liked the lid so much that they suggested a larger lid that will be sold as a set, with an anticipated air date of September 2015.

Castriota has used her contacts she met at the Southpointe Chamber network lunches and tradeshow to help with packaging and trade dealings with manufacturers. Specifically, John Zambelli, owner of Zambelli Technology International, has an office in Beijing, China where he will be Susan’s Chinese representative to guarantee John Zambelli product quality and logistics.

Last year Castriota made the second round to the popular TV show Shark Tank. This year she was contacted by 2 people at Shark Tank about applying to the 2015 show, which she has done. In the meantime, another reality show of the same genre contacted Castriota. She believes her story has caught the eye of the casting producers and hopes that one of the shows will want her as a contestant.

Castriota has appeared on THE DOCTORS SHOW, FOX NEWS, YAHOO and several local TV shows. As for QVC, Susan will have to attend a training class that entails an
