Chamber grappling with decline in membership By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

dinator. She left at the end of May.

Former and current officials cite a major dues hike for declining Southington Chamber of Commerce membership along with other decisions made since the departure of former president Art Secondo in 2015.

Some business owners reconsidered chamber membership after the cost went from $225 per year to a three-tiered structure ranging in price from $325 to nearly $1,000. Services that came with the former membership fee, such as holding grand openings, are now only available to the higher tiers of membership, Jansson said.

Membership in the Southington Chamber of Commerce has declined by about half over the past four years, according to Lisa Jansson, the chamber’s former events and communications coor-

Liz Hyatt, a former executive director, said the price increase was particularly alarming to smaller businesses.

Jansson no longer works for the chamber and plans to move out of the state in a few months. O’Keefe said she was let go at the end of May for violating the chamber’s complaint protocol.

“They’re definitely in transition,” Hyatt said of the chamber. Theresa Malloy, owner of Paul Gregory’s on Center Street, cancelled her chamber membership a month ago and joined the Merchants of Downtown Southington Association, which costs $125 per year.

Criticism, turnover

Jansson said the chamber lost about 30 members recently after the organization announced in April that Dawn Miceli, Town Council vice chairwoman, would be board chairwoman. She’s been on the board for five years. “The chamber is (business-

Jansson said Hyatt and Crofton were “bullied constantly” by the board, which held them responsible for the membership decline.

“I saw the Chamber going one way and the board of directors saw it going another. It became clear we were not going to agree and I could no longer stand behind that vision,” she said.

Taylor Crofton, the chamber’s most recent executive director, resigned in May. She replaced Hyatt, who was in the position from July 2015 until October 2017. Secondo, former chamber president, left his position after an agreement with the board in 2015.

O’Keefe said the chamber has lost eight members since Miceli took over chairmanship of the board and that none listed her council involvement as a reason for leaving. The board approved four new member businesses at its meeting Monday.

Hyatt declined to comment on that characterization.

“There’s not a single member who’s come to me indicating that there’s any concern about politics,” O’Keefe said.

Effort to regroup

Miceli declined to comment for this article, saying board members were deferring comment to O’Keefe. O’Keefe said the chamber board sets policy and doesn’t run the organization on a day-to-day basis. “The board hasn’t done anything to decrease the membership. The board is a volunteer board. The board relies on its paid employees and staff to carry its mission,” he said. “It’s not the board’s responsibility to maintain the membership. We have a paid staff that does that.” The chamber has had leaders, such as Secondo, who were involved in local politics without issue, O’Keefe said. Secondo was a Democratic town councilor. “We represent the business community of Southington. We do not represent any political party and don’t have

Last Friday, the chamber’s last employee left to take another position. Jon Hallgren, sales and marketing coordinator, said his position wasn’t filled yet but that someone was chosen to manage the chamber office. A woman at the chamber Monday said she was a temporary replacement and declined to be named.

Man charged with selling fentanyl SOUTHINGTON — A local man faces charges after police said they conducted four controlled purchases of fentanyl. Michael Barracliff, 53, of 99 Dawn Lane, was charged Wednesday, June 12, with possession of narcotics with intent to sell and four counts each of sale of narcotics and illegal possession of narcotics. He was cited for possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana. French region with original war planes, vehicles and equipment, and airborne drops occurred all week in various locations. Jalowiec participated in a drop with his team in conjunction with a French organization at the end of the week. The operation included original military transports known as C-47 and C-53 Dakotas, which had all logged original missions into Normandy 75 years ago. Jalowiec said, “Everything we do today in France, in these planes and in these skies is to remember and honor our grandparents and parents and all for which they fought and died for. We must never forget the enormity of the sacrifices they made to ensure our freedom today. Bearing that mantle on this 75th Anniversary is an easy task as I went out that door. Compared to 75 years ago no one was shooting at me, there were no Wehrmacht on the ground, and I came to rest in a peaceful farm field with a flock of sheep. When I stood up, I was in

February. She considered Saturday as her store’s grand opening, however, and procured a few vendors to host tables outside her store. She was disappointed in the turnout and attributed the low numbers to the lack of publicity. She pointed to the town farmer’s market and the popular Music on the Green series as demonstrating that with more promotion the crowds will come out.

Jalowiec used original equipment and uniform and exited a “D-Day Doll” which was originally built at the Douglas factory in Santa Monica, California and was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force on July 7, 1943. “To look out the window of the warplane and see upon its olive drab green fuselage the contrasting black and white invasion stripes, and to know you are flying above hallowed ground was a moving experience.” Jalowiec said. “While 75 years has passed since our veterans were there during the original invasion, it is important to remember that so many of them never left.”

Saturday didn’t shake Kline’s belief in Center Street. She described moving there as “the answer to a prayer.” “The neighbors all around us seem to support each other,” she said. Just down the street at Frootie Tooties, a candy shop that opened about a month ago, music was playing and kids and parents were coming and going. “We’ve been so busy,” said Tara Styring, co-owner of the shop along with her mother Treasure Nadwairski.

Decision on Wendy’s near movie theater postponed By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

a vote and work on a compromise.

Disagreement over the placement of a proposed Wendy’s on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike led the Planning and Zoning Commission to postpone a decision on the application Tuesday night.

David Sacco, an engineer with TPA Design Group of New Haven, said the Wendy's is planned for the east side of the AMC movie theater entrance at 1799 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike.

The owners of the proposed fast-food restaurant want the building closer to the street than at least one commission member. The panel voted unanimously to postpone

He told commission members visibility is important to the owners, particularly since a building to the west partially blocks the street view of the proposed

Wendy’s. “They are very interested in maximizing the visibility of this,” Sacco said. Paul Chaplinsky, commission vice chairman, said he’d like the building farther back. It’s proposed for about 73 feet from the street. That doesn’t match with other buildings in the area.

“I’d like to see the aesthetics of that area consistent,” Chaplinksy said. “Some harmony in that area would be nice.” Sacco said his clients also wanted a building that looks good. “This site is going to be extensively landscaped. They would like it to be as attractive as possible,” he said.

Town Planner Rob Philips told the commission he wasn’t recommending rejecting the application because of the proposed building’s distance from the street. Chaplinsky suggested a postponement to find a solution. “I want to see this thing go forward, I just don’t like the inconsistency,” he said.

Southington High School principal appointed

He’ll succeed Brian Straniari who retires this summer.

After the appointment, he said the departure from DePaolo was “bittersweet” but added he was eager to lead one of the state’s largest high schools.

The Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Pepe.

School board president Brian Goralski said one board member not present for Thursday’s vote, Joseph Baczewski, also supported Pepe’s appointment.

“I get to now go to the big Pepe house with even more kids,” he said. The high school has “an incredibly talented staff... a strong leadership team. I can’t wait to get started. I’m ready to go.”

Goralski pointed to Pepe’s resume. “It speaks for itself why we picked him,” he said.

Goralski said the board was impressed with all the finalists. “I couldn’t be happier to have a leader with diverse experience, who knows our district, who knows what we want,” Goralski said. He said the district will soon post the DePaolo principal job and is looking to fill it as soon as possible.

The board set Pepe’s salary at $165,722. Last year Stranieri made $168,802.

Miceli said Fusciello has a constitutional right to speak to the council although was concerned at how he’s increasingly disrupted meetings. “Everything comes to a stop,” she said. Fusciello was arrested for disorderly conduct and interfering with an officer at Town Hall in 2003. He was given a temporary restraining order to stay out of town buildings in 2006. “I don’t think anyone wants to see him charged with anything. I know I certainly don’t,” Miceli said.

Panel picks South End School for new name By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Plantsville School students spell out the name of their school during a meeting on renaming Plantsville School and South End School at the John Weichsel Municipal Center, May 21.

An ad-hoc education board committee wants South End School renamed after the late Zaya A. Oshana, the town’s longest-serving school board member. If adopted by the full Board of Education, the South End Road school would become Zaya A. Oshana Elementary School at South End.

During a June 11 meeting, committee members said that while picking a school to rename was difficult, the decision to honor Oshana was easy.

Record-Journal

“It was unanimous that he, without a doubt, met all the criteria necessary to have something named after him,” said Terri Carmody, school board vice chairwoman and committee chairwoman. “There wasn’t a question in any of our minds.” Parents from all three schools objected to a name change at a public hearing late last month. While many said they supported honor-

Patricia Queen, a school board member on the committee, said Flanders’ future is uncertain since a recent consultant’s report included options for closing the school as part of a larger elementary school redistricting plan. She also opposed renaming Plantsville since the neighborhood and school honor the Plant brothers who were important figures in the village’s history.

Queen said she tallied emails, testimony at the public hearing and other correspondence from parents on both sides of renaming schools.

“It becomes emotional for people,” she said. The school board can modify or reject the committee’s recommendation, according to Carmody. It will take up the issue at its June 20 meeting. The petition for Oshana was started by Angelo Coppola, a former assistant superintendent, and Beecher Lajoie, a former Thalberg school principal. Coppola acknowledged the passion parents had for their school names. “Parents are doing what they were asked to do, that is get involved with the school their children attends,” he said.

Parents were concerned about the loss of history with a renaming as well as signs, t-shirts and other PTO-purchased merchandise which would be outdated. Half a dozen were at Tuesday’s meeting.

Lajoie praised Oshana and described him as a man of integrity, fairness and thoughtfulness.

Queen, with others in agreement, said South End was the best fit. The school name could be preserved even with the addition of Oshana. There was also some precedence for renaming regionally named schools, such as Central Elementary School, which became Derynoski School and West Ridge School which became Kelley School.

ing Oshana, each contingent had arguments for the existing school names. Oshana, an educator, died two years ago.

R213815v3

The committee had considered renaming one of three schools and chose South End rather than Flanders or Plantsville. Committee members included three school board members and two residents who are former educators and who petitioned for Oshana’s name to be on a school.

Dave Zajac,

“It’s almost a draw, those for and those against,” she said.
