SOUTHINGTON BOARD OF EDUCATION

Members mull redistricting, closing Flanders Location, age and demographic projections prompted consultants to recommend closing Flanders School among a host of redistricting options, but school board members said they haven’t reached any conclusions.

The Board of Education hired consultants Milone & MacBroom to study demographic projections and make recommendations about school buildings, including the future need for Kelley and Flanders schools. Kelley and Flanders haven’t been renovated in decades. Flanders is

projected to grow by only a handful of students over the next ten years and was rated by consultants as having nearly the least flexible space of all the town’s elementary schools, with Kelley last on the list. Other plans in the consultant’s report included redistricting the elementary schools but retaining all of

them, redistricting the middle schools to align to elementary school boundaries and combinations of options. Board Chairman Brian Goralski said before deciding the future of the two schools, the board needed to know how many students the district will See Education, A3

The Orchards salutes vets with Wall of Honor Angelina Gange, a resident of The Orchards at Southington, is nearing her 100th birthday. However, she has no problem recounting stories of her military service more than 70 years ago. Gange said her father was an air raid warden, her sister was a cadet nurse and her brother was in the Air Force, so it was only natural for her to enlist, too, during World War II. She served for “two years, three months and 26 days” primarily in the medical corps where she trained air crews in a low pressure chamber.

There is a family rate of $125 for 3 children or $150 for 4 children within the same household. COMMENTARY

Presidential doings on the Fourth of July As we celebrate the country’s birthday on this long July 4 weekend, let’s have a look at a timeline on the National Park Service website that outlines how the presidents have “fit Independence Day into their busy schedule over the years.” You can view the whole timeline at https :// www.nps.gov/articles/whatdid-the-presidents-do-onjuly-fourth.htm. We’ve picked items that strike us as especially interesting and have added a bit of commentary as we skip around on the timeline. By the way, the NPS credits James Heintze, librarian emeritus, at Washington D.C.’s American University for compiling the information. Let’s start with President Taft whose activities present the only Connecticut reference in this timeline. In 1909, Taft is in residence at the new “summer White

But not every July 4 is a formal occasion for our presidents. They like their R & R, too, and a few spent that time on the Jersey shore, which makes sense given its proximity to D. C. In 1855, President Pierce and the first lady took a beach vacation at Cape May, New Jersey. And in 1872, President Grant vacations at Long Beach, New Jersey with “a joyful backdrop of cannon fire, bell ringing, and a fireworks display.” In 1891, President Harrison also takes a vacation in Cape May. Sometimes the festivities are quite historic as in 1848 when President Polk witnesses the laying of the cornerstone of the Washington Monument, with future

Speaking of Lincoln, in 1863, ever the iconoclast, he delivers a “Fourth of July” speech – on July 7 – from a second floor window of the White House to an “immense” crowd.

Other notable historic July 4 events include the following. In 1868, President Johnson executes a Third Amnesty Proclamation that exonerates all who participated in the Confederate Rebellion. In 1914, President Wilson, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, interprets the meaning of the Declaration and speaks the memorable line, “Our country, right or wrong.”

In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Schenley Park, Pittsburgh where he speaks before 200,000 people. Amazingly, there is archival video of that address at the Library of Congress website. Now for some sad news. In 1850, President Taylor attends a Washington Monument tribute. After returning to the White House he consumes cherries and milk. He falls ill and dies on July 9. One of the grimmest of these holidays, was July 4, 1881 as President Garfield had been hit two days earlier by an assassin's bullet. The

A couple from Simsbury are a few weeks away from opening a West Street restaurant that will offer a blend of Japanese and Korean food. Taeho Lee and his wife Hyehyun Jong hope to start serving customers next month after final inspections of their restaurant, Koshi Sushi and Grill. Lee, who moved from South Korean 15 years ago, said the name is a fusion of Korean and sushi that will be the restaurant’s staples. Korean dishes, which include rice topped with meat and vegetables with spices, aren’t as well known but Lee is confident people will like them once they’ve tried them. He worked at Sushi California in Newington before deciding to start his own restaurant. Jong will be restaurant manager. “I’m going to stay at the sushi bar,” Lee said.

The group is led by two trained facilitators, a licensed professional and a para-professional with lived experience. Recognizing that this disease affects entire families, the group provides a forum to share openly while receiving peer support, information and compassion, thus breaking the stigma and isolation created by the disease. The group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Middlefield Federated Church, 402 Main St., Middlefield.

Obituaries SOUTHINGTON- Susan (Zembrzuski) Narus, age 63, beloved wife of Richard Narus, passed away at Hartford Hospital on Thursday, June 20, 2019. Suzi was born in Waterbury on July 28, 1955, daughter of the late Walter B. and Frances K. (Jascorwoski) Zembrzuski. She was a longtime resident of Southington, and was an educator and media specialist in the East Hartford School system for 34 years. Suzi was a crafty, fun person, an amazing cook, and she enjoyed camping, the beach, and the outdoors. She was well known for her beautiful smile, quick wit, her infectious personality, and ability to listen to others. Above all, she loved her family. Tops Market owner John Salerno hopes to start construction on a new building in August and reopen in February. A line of credit helped store owners close the funding gap between the actual cost to rebuild the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike store and what the insurance company will pay. Salerno said they’ve also made changes to the building to reduce the cost. Salerno was offered a lump sum from the insurance company following a fire that destroyed the grocery store and its contents in March. “I could have walked away with money, instead I’m walking away in debt,” he said. “I just couldn’t let it go.”

As Kourtney Barnes walked down Center Street to get a drink after work with a friend on Wednesday, June 36, an animal control officer pointed out a black bear in a tree. “I didn’t see him at first. The animal control officer said ‘Watch out. There’s a bear above you.’” Barnes said. “He didn’t look mean or anything, so I wasn’t too worried.” She said the bear didn’t look aggressive, just hot and scared. Barnes, who is from Meriden, said the bear was probably about as tall as she is — 5-foot-3. She continued along and shot a quick video from the patio area of 75 Center.
