OUR HISTORY, OUR FUTURE It’s been twelve years since Southampton Solent received university status, but the various institutions which make up the modern University have a history of educational excellence stretching back 160 years.

Since becoming a university in 2005, Solent has helped over 50,000 students from all walks of life to make the most of their potential… and we continue to develop both our courses and our facilities to ensure Solent delivers an exceptional student experience. Our stunning new Spark building, which opened in 2016, has played host to a range of events, from degree shows to fashion shows and conferences – bringing genuine ‘wow’ factor to the campus. And the Spark is only part of a £100 million estate development plan to be delivered by 2020. We’re already developing plans for a fantastic new sports building to sit alongside the Spark, providing dedicated, ultra-modern sports and sport science facilities. *QS World University Rankings, 2017

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE The annual QS World University Rankings highlight over 900 of the top universities in the world, and in 2017 Solent made its feature debut in the rankings. The QS rankings consider over 50 different indicators and universities are scored from one to five stars, both overall and in eight main categories. As well as securing a respectable three stars overall, Solent scored the maximum five stars for both teaching and inclusivity, and four stars for facilities and employability. Southampton Solent University also climbed 11 places in Whatuni’s Student Choice Awards 2017 – an annual celebration of student satisfaction based on reviews by 27,000 students across 12 categories. Building on our 2015 Times Higher Education Most Improved Student Experience Award, Solent’s latest performance shows we truly put students at the heart of everything we do. 7

AT THE HEART OF THE CIT Y A vibrant and modern city, Southampton has something to offer everyone – and Solent University is right at the centre of it. We have strong ties with local government, businesses, organisations and residents across the city, and Solent is heavily involved in the economic, social and cultural development of the region. We also play an active role in key city celebrations and festivals, working alongside our community partners every year to host cultural exhibitions, public speakers and sporting events. This strong engagement with the city’s history and culture is embodied by our Solent Showcase gallery, which brings modern and innovative art to the centre of Southampton – free for anyone to appreciate.

We’re keen both to maintain and develop our existing international relationships, and to explore exciting new opportunities.

We have four bilateral exchange agreements in Canada and one in Switzerland, further increasing Solent’s international reach. As an island nation we are absolutely dependent on shipping. It is the lifeblood of the UK’s economy and responsible for 95% of all imports and exports, yet many people know less about the industry today than they did fifty years ago.

APPLIED RESEARCH Research is a key focus in Solent’s long-term strategic plan. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework recognised Solent for ‘world-leading’ work within communication, cultural and media studies, and art and design – as well as for ‘internationally excellent’ work in engineering and sport and exercise science. Solent researchers have led on topics such as gender imbalance among seafarers, fitness in an ageing community, and the built environment. Our Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research is one of the country’s leading research and consultancy centres, consulted by the FA Chairman’s Commission and contributing research and recommendations which have changed Premier League rules. Through consultancies such as Solent Acoustics, and knowledge transfer partnerships with companies in sectors as diverse as childcare, maritime, online media and transport, we have unlocked the University’s expertise and contributed to innovation of regional, national and international significance. 15

FIRST-CLASS FACILITIES With today’s fast-changing professional technology, our facilities are a major attraction for prospective students – and increasingly for external business and other clients looking to make use of the very best technology. Recent investment includes our innovative new teaching building, the Spark, while our state-of-the-art media academy offers three multi-camera HD TV studios, postproduction and animation suites, a dedicated newsroom and access to 1.9 million pounds’ worth of loanable equipment. Meanwhile our fully equipped outside broadcast vehicle takes students to world-renowned festivals like Glastonbury every year. In sport science, advanced laboratories spanning physiology, biomechanics, psychology, health and exercise are fundamental to teaching and research. These £1.3 million facilities are also used by athletes and clubs, including Team GB wheelchair rugby and Southampton Football Club – and our planned new sports building will add even more value for students and partners. 17
