FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the 25th edition of SOFA CHICAGO! Thank you for joining us this year for this momentous year celebrating 25 years of SOFA CHICAGO. Reflecting upon this milestone, I am flooded by nostalgia as SOFA has always been a community, and the fair has served as a reunion where we catch up with one another, discover what is new, celebrate one another’s achievements, and make new friends. And with that spirit, I am proud to share this year’s exciting fair with you! This year’s fair features nearly 70 galleries representing more than 800 artists, and galleries from around the world. Thank you to all the exhibiting galleries, special exhibits, demonstrations, Partner Pavilion participants for being us in this special year. Thank you to all who are exhibiting with us again this year and welcome to all our new exhibitors. This fair would not be here without all of you! Also, we extend our gratitude to our cultural partners and attendees for their support and recognition of SOFA CHICAGO’s strong reputation as a dynamic, international fair dedicated to contemporary and modern art and design. We are thrilled to welcome ChiArts as our Opening Night Beneficiary for SOFA CHICAGO 2018. ChiArts is Chicago’s first public arts high school and supports over 600 rising scholar-artists from all 50 wards. I hope you enjoy the installations and performances that the ChiArts faculty and students will be creating throughout the fair. These are meant to engage our visitors and by doing so, I hope you will join us in supporting ChiArts and this important school in Chicago. This year’s Special Exhibits feature 9 spectacular presentations by: Appalachian Center for Craft; Ball State University; Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts; ChiArts; Collectors of Wood Art; Museum of Glass, Tacoma; North Carolina and the Studio Glass Movement; The Chicago Mosaic School; and The Documenta Project. All Special Exhibits feature important non-profit art organizations, museums, or universities who are presenting thought-provoking exhibits about the applied arts. I hope you enjoy these presentations and find new insights into the work and concepts exhibited. SOFA has always been a platform for education and the Lecture Series is a testament to this. I hope you take advantage of these lectures and hear from the curators, artists, and scholars who
are presenting in this year’s Lecture Series. These are wonderful opportunities to hear more about an artist’s work, or new concepts in the applied arts, or how to properly inventory and insure your collection. With more than 20 lectures to choose from, there is something for everyone in this year’s series. We are pleased to welcome our six art and design universities as part of the CONNECT competition! CONNECT is a concept we have challenged these schools with by asking them to create design environments with seating, lighting and conceptual staging where you, our attendees, can “connect.” This year’s schools include: Columbus College of Art & Design (OH); Illinois Institute of Technology (IL); University of California, Davis; University of Iowa; University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth; and Virginia Tech University. Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts)
The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts) is Chicago’s first public arts high school. ChiArts provides scholar-artists with a tuition-free, pre-professional arts training program paired with a college-preparatory academic curriculum. We focus on serving each scholar-artist through a lens of compassion so that empathy and understanding permeate into every arts and academic classroom. Our arts conservatories include Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts. ChiArts’ Visual Arts Conservatory begins with foundational instruction, including an emphasis upon essential art making skills and understandings, and progresses toward more complex concepts, including critical analysis of visual culture and the fostering of independent work. The curriculum challenges and empowers students to develop their own aesthetic as each matures into an innovative artist and critical thinker. Here at SOFA, we are proud to showcase rising scholar-artists who have taken our mural course to create a piece in real-time, led by Visual Arts faculty. Asheville Summer of Glass
Artists and institutions in North Carolina played a pivotal role in the Studio Glass Movement. Penland School of Crafts was an early adopter of glass, with Director Bill Brown bringing in Bill Boysen in 1965 to build their first hot glass studio. The addition of the Artistin-Residence program nurtured the careers of many glass artists. It was also at Penland in 1970 that the Glass Art Society was founded. Western Carolina University played an important role through biennial exhibits curated by former Harvey Littleton student Joan Byrd. These exhibits, which began in 1974, included the work of William and Katherine Bernstein, Fritz Dreisbach, Stephen Dee Edwards, Gilbert C. Johnson, Jon Kuhn, Robert Levin, Yaffa and Jeff Todd, Mark Peiser, Richard Ritter and Jan Williams, among others. In 1976 Harvey Littleton moved to the region, bringing in more collectors and international glass artists. The exhibit covers the period from 1965-1995. Ball State University’s Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass: Creating a Foundation for the Future Ball State University’s Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass in Muncie embodies the late, highly respected Studio Glass collector’s vision to establish a premier university glass making program in Indiana. It is the only American center for contemporary glass in academia with an endowment for facilities updates, materials, faculty salaries, graduate assistantships, student scholarships, and visiting arts professionals. The exhibit Ball State University’s Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass: Creating a Foundation for the Future introduces SOFA audiences to the resources available to Glick Center undergraduates and graduates. Celebrating 500: Innovation in the Museum of Glass Visiting Artist Residency Program Since Museum of Glass (MOG) opened to the public in 2002 it has hosted over 500 Visiting Artist residencies in its Hot Shop in Tacoma, Washington. These residencies have featured a broad spectrum of artists - encouraging emerging artists, masters of the material, and artists of other mediums to create work and experiment with glass. Celebrating 500 marks the 500th residency milestone celebrated at MOG last year, and examines the impact of the Museum’s Visiting Artist residency program at SOFA. Celebrating 500 will include insight into the evolution of the artistic process which unfolds in the Museum of Glass Hot Shop, and will also highlight innovation and experimentation in the medium of glass.
Collectors of Wood Art – WOOD: 25 Years of Innovation In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of SOFA CHICAGO, the Collectors of Wood Art have identified some of the most innovative artists working in wood over the past twenty-five years. All of the artists were selected for their unique, innovative techniques and the groundwork they laid for others to follow. Thirty-five talented artisans; including furniture makers, sculptors, carvers and turners; have joined together to showcase the amazing things that are possible with the medium of wood. The exhibition features and embraces large concepts Community around skilled making and fine craft. Within the worldwide Contemporary Glass Movement there is passionate support to capture the spirit and character of the unique quality of the people who contributed to and enabled our community with a collection of archival portraits. By photographing them using near life-size images, their gestures and presence will be preserved on large format black and white film and high resolution digital files. Mary Van Cline, who is known for her artwork combining photography and glass since 1979, and THE DOCUMENTA PROJECT team members are photographing the many well-known personalities in the studio glass movement. Intersection: Art & Life shares works by artists featured in a new book of the same name. The book, by Kevin Wallace, director of the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts, explores the historical parallels between art and life, with the arts playing a central role in exploring identity, spirituality, our relationship with the environment and developing technologies. The Text
In The Text, an international group of artists explore the form of the artist’s book interpreted through the medium of mosaics. Their works, which express a diverse range of visual and textural sensibilities, share a common goal: to speak in the language of form. These artists play with the tradition of the codex and create unconventional approaches through an ancient art form. As they explore their own truths, both personal and universal, the mortar becomes a page where these stories can unfold. Through their work, each artist examines their personal relationship with language and books as vehicles for self-expression, discovery, and communication. This exhibition reflects a distinctive set of technical skills and aesthetic visions in a confluence of materials, form, and texture that explore text as verbal and visual simultaneously. What is consumption through the lens of contemporary society and culture? Over the past decade how we interact with the world has changed significantly, and it is reasonable to assume interactions will continue to become more digital with each new tool that silicon valley creates; in order to “help us” actually becomes more infiltrated into our lives. We want to take a look at online consumerism through an abstract lens of installation. We intend to surround attendees with projected imagery of consumable items in an enclosed tent-like space. The public will be welcomed by reflective imagery – seating made from discarded Amazon boxes, offering a place to recoup and charge their devices. Addressing the proliferation of products of limited utility and durability, the design of e-commerce also interfaces to encourage reckless spending, the waste-stream and byproducts of an industry individually packaging and shipping vast quantities of material daily.

Illinois Institute of Technology
In the world as we know it, the axes of X, Y, and Z dictate everything. A simple framework of visual lines exploits these within this stage for diverse physical and emotional interactions. Elements therein are fundamentally assigned to signify each; seating arrangement in width, wall facade in depth, lighting systems in height. An experience, following laws of proportion and tailored by an articulation of a sloping plane, mutates with movement throughout. Intricate illumination then forms beacons to guide through the orchestrated space – into a serendipitous moment of recharge.
University of California, Davis
The UC Davis submission is an immersive installation titled, BLOOM. Our Design Department emphasizes social responsibility, human-centered practice and sustainability. We are uniquely poised with a biodesign program which gives us the opportunity to work with innovative and sustainable materials. Given the opportunity to build an exhibit for an international audience, we have dedicated BLOOM to tackling the negative environmental impact of consumerism by providing a comfortable, desirable and modern lounge space, with everything except the electronics composed completely of biodegradable materials. We aim for the audience to connect with the environment through materials like mycelium, a unique biomaterial grown from root-like strings that extend from underneath mushrooms. BLOOM will prove that products aren’t limited by their life spans.

The University of Iowa 3D design program has created a harmonious and comforting environment for SOFA CONNECT 2018 inspired by the works of Grant Wood. We were most drawn to his painting Young Corn, depicting an undulating patchwork of fields and pasture in rural Iowa. The intense rolling and spherical forms present in Grant Wood’s landscapes capture a nostalgia for the rural fields of Iowa. We borrowed shapes, textures and colors to create a warm space, evoking the feelings of nostalgia present in Young Corn. The overall structure references rolling hills lined with rows of crops and draws one in through a wide front opening. The cylindrical seating and platforms are reminiscent of trees. The space reflects our pride in the history of our university. Like Grant Wood, we appreciate the great beauty in all facets of Midwest life, and strive to communicate that beauty through our space.

The ocean is a connected space dynamic and teeming with life. Catch and Release, will harbor the currents of SOFA visitors, like a school of fish, inviting them to share a moment of curiosity and inquiry. The UMass Dartmouth team was inspired by the daily impact of the ocean on life in New England. The fishing industry has been central to the identity of New Bedford, Massachusetts since the nineteenth century. Effects have been felt throughout the city’s history and the fluctuations of its economy. Recognizing that a trap functions as an inviting enclosure, we have designed a similar structure for visitors to inhabit. The permeability of traps inspired us to explore expansive design. Utilizing light and projections, visitors will be lured into our space, much like baiting a trap. Our structure draws parallels between the experience of sea-life and human connections through contemporary design.
Virginia Tech University
Voided Space challenges our perception of solid and void. We seek the state of waking up from the hum of a crowd to appreciate presence of an individual. The installation consists of negative spaces that are accessible from the exterior, as well as enclosed positive spaces that contain lights and sensors. The elastic, translucent fabric boundaries that define these volumes are also the media that obscure light and view. Perceptions of depth and activity are blurred, while reactive lighting enriches the personal qualities of the small installation space. Visitors can sit in one of the darkened spaces and gaze through layers of fabric, people, and light.
