An inspirational model for our times

T

he story of Katherine Jenkins is a wonderfully inspiring and poignant one to welcome in a new year. Still only 30, the Welsh mezzo-soprano has achieved the remarkable feat of almost seamlessly making the crossover between classical and popular music while enhancing, rather than watering down, her reputation and popularity in each genre. Almost just as impressively, the 2000 Face of Wales has done so while warding off criticism in some quarters that her success can be attributed to her looks rather than her talent. In an age of X-Factor overnight stardom and a reality TV world full of people enjoying 15 minutes of fame before disappearing back to their everyday lives, Katherine Jenkins has triumphed across a broad spectrum – from operatic arias and hymns to contemporary songs and musical comedy – after paying her dues as a singing and piano student, an award-winning chorister, a singing teacher, a tour guide and a model. Six out of seven of her studio albums have reached number one in the

classical charts; she was the first British classical crossover artist to have two number one albums in the same year; and she was the first female artist to win two consecutive BRIT awards. As our exclusive interview with the stunning star shows, however, it is not only about record sales and guest appearances on an eclectic mix of TV shows including Popstar to Operastar and Doctor Who… quietly, away from the cameras, Katherine Jenkins has also travelled to Afghanistan and Iraq to sing for the troops. The publication of this first issue of 2011 will find many people still enjoying the extended Spanish festive season, through There Kings Day on 6 January. We are also pleased to note that, while other local media are taking a break this month, Society Living is setting the agenda with a January issue full of great features aimed at injecting a sense of optimism into the start of what we all hope – and cautiously believe – will be a more positive year. Touch of luxury The tassel… What we may think of now as a humble little decoration turns out to be steeped in history and implication. Can you imagine spending days, weeks or months creating a single tassel? Once an art form, the tassel and its connotation of luxury returns as the adornment du jour; a 2011 fashion trend that offshoots from the military and historical influences of seasons past. While it was a constant to see the odd, small tassel on leather accessories such as handbags and purses throughout last year, we are now seeing them prominently – oversized, extra long, brightly coloured or made to stand out in some way.

As of spring 2011 the military fashion trend will have been with us for over a decade. And for that decade it’s been great – we’ve loved it – but 10 years on we have to admit that it’s time to move on. The question is: what do we move on to? The answer? The trend that has been living in its shadow, waiting for its moment of glory. And for spring-summer 2011 it’s going to achieve all that because… here comes the biker trend.

Movie of the Month The Dilemma Vince Vaughn and Kevin James headline an allstar comedy about a man who finds out that what you don’t say to a friend is just as important as what you do. Since college, confirmed bachelor Ronny and happily married Nick have been through thick and thin. Now partners in an auto design firm, the two pals are vying to land a dream project that would launch their company. With Ronny’s girlfriend, Beth, and Nick’s wife, Geneva, by their sides, they’re unbeatable. But Ronny’s world is turned upside down when he inadvertently sees Geneva out with another man and makes it his mission to get answers. As the amateur investigation dissolves his world into comic mayhem, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. Now, with the clock ticking and pressure mounting on the biggest presentation of their careers, Ronny must decide what will happen if he reveals the truth to his best friend – in the process learning how far you can bend a brotherly bond before it snaps. The King’s Speech The King’s Speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, George is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war. This film was winner of the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award. Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter The Next Three Days Lara is accused of murder even though she is innocent. This affects the relationship between her and her professor husband and son, who take extreme actions in an attempt to free her from prison. In order to save his wife from prison, the husband consults a hardened criminal who has successfully

escaped from prison many times, and who has even written a book about the art of escaping from jail. Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson The Green Hornet This action-comedy film tells the story of Britt Reid, the son of a wealthy newspaper publisher, who inherits a media empire after his father dies. He meets an employee and realises he has a cache of weapons and utilities. Britt decides that the two should become crime fighters, taking on the identity of the Green Hornet. With the help of his new secretary, Britt discovers Chudnofsky controls the city’s criminal underworld, has united all the gangs of the city and seeks the Green Hornet, believing him to be a direct threat to his elaborate grand plan. Seth Rogan, Cameron Diaz, Christophe Waltz True Grit For those who love nostalgia, this westerninspired film is the one for you. Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest US marshal she can find, a man with “true grit”, Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him on his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio finds danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her grit tested. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin

CULTURAL CORNER Tangled An updated film adaptation of the Disney classic Rapunzel. When the kingdom’s most wanted, and most charming, bandit Flynn Rider hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel, a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. A film for all the family… with some generally funny moments. Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy

5 films to watch out for in 2011 Sucker Punch Set in the 1950s, this action-fantasy tells the tale of a little girl who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in a mental institution and while there she starts to imagine an alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. Expected to be released in March 2011.

Born to be Wild Born to be Wild 3D is an inspired story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. The film documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them, saving endangered species one life at a time. Stunningly captured in IMAX 3D, Born to be Wild 3D is a heart-warming adventure transporting movie-goers into the lush rainforests of Borneo with world-renowned primatologist Dr Birute Galdikas, and across the rugged Kenyan savannah with celebrated elephant authority Dame Daphne Sheldrick, as they and their team rescue, rehabilitate and return these incredible animals back into the wild. In theatres April 2011. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 In Part 2 of the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the Wizarding World escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and

no one is safe. It is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. It all ends here. This film will be released July 2011 and will be a sad end to a fantastic series of films. Hotel Transylvania People can’t seem to get enough of animated comedies, and this one should be especially beloved by fans of the old Universal movie monsters. The plot of the film has Dracula, the Mummy, the Werewolf and Frankenstein hanging around an eastern European hotel after being made irrelevant by modern technology and ideas. This lighthearted comedy is scheduled for a September 2011 release. The Hangover: Part 2 If this sequel is anything close to being as funny as the first, then we are in for a treat. Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined. It’s going to be that good that Bill Clinton has agreed to appear. Watch out for this one in May 2011.

Quick Clips SEAN PENN received a special lifetime achievement honour at the Dubai International Film Festival. He was awarded this prestigious prize for both his film work and his dedication to humanitarian causes. The event’s chairman, Abdulhamid Juma, praised the twotime Oscar winner as “an outstanding and versatile actor, gifted director and accomplished producer. His tireless work on behalf of the people of the world, from Haiti to the United States to Iraq and Iran, and his use of the celebrity spotlight to assist humanity, is an example to us all.”

ANNA FARIS is the latest actor to be linked with a role in Ghostbusters 3. Casting notices for the sci-fi comedy have reportedly started surfacing around Hollywood asking for young male and female actors aged 18-30 to make up the team of new ghost catchers. There have also been whispers of the return of BILL MURRAY and SIGOURNEY WEAVER. However, no casting has yet to be officially confirmed. KIMBERLEY WALSH has been cast in a new film based on the series of Horrid Henry children’s books. The Girls Aloud star will play Henry’s cousin Prissy Polly in the 3D movie, alongside confirmed actors ANJELICA HUSTON, RICHARD E. GRANT, NOEL FIELDING, JO BRAND, MATTHEW HORNE and PRUNELLA SCALES. COLIN FIRTH has revealed that he became physically ill from his role in The King’s Speech. The actor, who plays the title role of a king with a serious speech impediment, said his intense connection with the character left him experiencing other symptoms after the cameras stopped rolling, such as headaches and muscle spasms. BILLY BOB THORNTON has claimed that video games are partly responsible for the number of bad movies Hollywood makes. The 55-year-old actor and musician suggested that the video game-playing generation has had a negative effect on the type of films being released. KRISTIN DAVIS has confirmed there are currently no plans to film Sex And The City 3. The actress, who portrayed Charlotte York Goldenblatt in the franchise, has said that she would still be interested in continuing the series. The 45-year-old, who is due to return to television in an adaptation of the book The Happiness Project, has dismissed suggestions that her former cast-mates could make cameos in the show. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY has reportedly been announced as the top contender for the role of Anna Karenina in a new film. Knightley is said to be under consideration to play the Russian heroine in an adaptation being helmed by Joe Wright. Wright also directed the actress in Pride And Prejudice and Atonement, both of which are widely considered to have been two of Knightley’s best performances. Anna Karenina tells the story of a married woman who engages in an affair with an aristocrat. Columbia Pictures are reportedly in the midst of searching for a superstar cameo for their upcoming sequel to Zombieland. They are hoping to replicate the success of the first film, which featured BILL MURRAY in a memorable cameo as himself. RUPERT GRINT was reportedly asked to leave the set of the latest Harry Potter film after laughing during a shoot. DANIEL RADCLIFFE said his kissing scene with EMMA WATSON in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 proved too funny for Grint to watch. Grint was apparently laughing so much off camera he was asked to leave the set because he was so distracting. Vampires beware: Buffy is coming back. A remake of the horror-comedy Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the earliest stages of development, with no director or star cast yet. Reports show that audiences want SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR to be cast as the lead, as there are worries for the authenticity of the film if she were not to be part of it. 16

JEREMY RENNER has confirmed he could take over the Mission: Impossible franchise from TOM CRUISE. The Oscar-nominated Hurt Locker star suggested that groundwork is being laid for his character Brandt to replace Cruise’s IMF agent Ethan Hunt. SIMON PEGG and Lost hunk JOSH HOLLOWAY are among the cast for the new Mission: Impossible, due out in cinemas in December 2011. ADRIEN BRODY has reportedly won a lawsuit he filed against the makers of an Italian horror film. The actor sued the producers of the movie Giallo in order to stop its release. In the suit, Brody claimed that he was misled by the filmmakers, who allegedly lied to him to prevent him from walking off the set after he learned the project was under-funded. Brody also suggested that he was not paid for his role in the picture. JAMES FRANCO and ANNE HATHAWAY are rumoured to have accepted an offer to host next year’s Academy Awards ceremony together. The report claims an official announcement regarding next year’s hosting situation is expected as early as this week. Franco recently received rave reviews for his performance in 127 Hours, while Hathaway’s latest film Love And Other Drugs was released last month. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on 27 February. IFC Films have announced a release date for their dark superhero-comedy movie Super. James Gunn’s low-budget film will be released in April 2011. The movie will star RAINN

WILSON, ELLEN PAGE, LIV TYLER and KEVIN BACON, with Gunn writing and directing. The film stars Wilson as an ordinary man who decides to become a superhero when his wife leaves him for a drug dealer. Some of the names currently rumoured for a part in Zombieland 2 include HARRISON FORD and ANTHONY HOPKINS. Following the supposed leaks, director Ruben Fleischer tweeted that the rumours were false, but failed to clarify whether he was referring to the rumour of a cameo in the film, or simply the names suggested for the part. It has also been revealed that the sequel will focus on more of a single lead villain than the first film. Zombieland 2 will be shot in 3D, but a release date for the film has yet to be announced. MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ has hinted that she may return in James Cameron’s ocean-set sequel to Avatar. In the first film the actress played pilot Trudy Chacon, who died during the final battle. She has recently said she would like to work with Cameron again. Avatar 2 is set to be released in 2014, with a further sequel the following year. STEPHEN DORFF has revealed he is writing a new comedy movie for his friend and former co-star JACK NICHOLSON to star in. Dorff and Nicholson appeared together in 1996’s Blood and Wine. Dorff described the film as a very funny comedy set in the south of France. There is no script written yet, but it is certain to be a brilliant movie.

5 acts to look out for in 2011 Jessie J The 22-two-year-old Essex girl is making quite a name for herself in the music industry; she’s already penned tunes for Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus, and the likes of Justin Timberlake have been praising her. A graduate from the famous Brit School, which brought us the likes of Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, Kate Nash and Adele, she oozes sassy attitude, and has striking looks and an amazing set of pipes on her. Her debut single Do It Like A Dude is out now. World, watch out!

One Direction There is no doubt in my mind that One Direction are going to be huge this year. The adorable quintet have all the components to conquer the charts (and our hearts): great voices, amazing chemistry… and they are just so darn cute! With the backing of Simon Cowell, these guys are ones to watch out for. The Drums It’s been quite a year for The Drums. The success New York’s most vital new band have enjoyed (including a brace of NME covers and one top 100 single) has been tempered by the shock departure of guitarist and founding member Adam Kessler. Unabashed, the remaining trio made the valiant decision to take their brazen helpings of perfectly bashful indie-pop to a wider audience in 2011, a year they will surely take the world by storm. 18

Me, a single made famous by Cher Lloyd from X Factor. He also has a danceable cover of ELO’s Evil Woman, which will make another sweettoothed diversion, and is sure to conquer the UK music scene.

Lauren Pritchard Lauren is a 23-year-old from Tennessee who moved to LA when she was just 16 to pursue a singing career. She ended up on Lisa-Marie Presley’s sofa and hasn’t looked back. She’s now based in London and has just released her debut album Wasted in Jackson. Her sound is R&B meets gospel, mixed with a gorgeous bluesy undertone. She says she is inspired by the music that she grew up listening to – Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and The Temptations. She’s currently working with Ivor Novello-winning songwriter Eg White and folk singers Mumford And Sons… a soul singing star in the making.

Single Tracks EXAMPLE has announced further dates for his UK headline tour. The singer and rapper will play 19 dates in February and March, following a string of shows throughout October to December last year. The extra set of gigs kicks off on 22 February in Norwich and wraps up in Brighton on 17 March, with two London concerts on 2 and 3 March at the Shepherds Bush Empire. Example released his sophomore album Won’t Go Quietly in early 2010, which has sold over 100,000 copies and spawned four top 40 hits. So if you’re heading back to the UK at any point in the next couple of months be sure to see Example in concert. MICHAEL BUBLE has officially announced he will marry in the spring. The star expressed his feelings of delight that he will wed actress Luisana Lopilato in April. “I was going to do it on the 29th,” Bublé joked, referring to the date of Prince William’s wedding, “but figured I wouldn’t get any press!” The star proposed to Lopilato during a visit to her home country of Argentina in 2009. JAMIROQUAI have announced their first UK tour for five years. They will play four arena shows – in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow – in April this year. The

CULTURAL CORNER KEISHA BUCHANAN has revealed that her new album will shock fans. The singer, who was ousted from the SUGABABES in September 2009, said she had been working on her debut solo record for a year, and believes people will be surprised by the direction of the LP. Buchanan was also recently said to have avoided former band-mate AMELLE BERRABAH at a London gig. Things must still be frosty between the band members after 16 months apart.

jaunt will span Jamiroquai’s 17-year career in music, during which seven studio albums have been released and 25 million records sold. The funk act have also confirmed Lifeline as the second single from their latest record Rock Dust Light Star. The track is released later this month. ALEXANDRA BURKE has revealed her tour is inspired by MICHAEL JACKSON’S live performances. The pop siren, who is gearing up for her first headline tour in 2011, admits that she is nervous about the UK jaunt, and has watched Michael Jackson’s This Is It DVD a number of times to learn how to command the stage. The Broken Heels singer also revealed that she opted for smaller venues to create a more intimate experience for her fans. Burke kicks off her 21date tour in Belfast on 16 January. After performing here in Marbella in the summer, we at Society Living are sure she is going to rock the crowds – no problem. BRITNEY SPEARS will reportedly remain under the conservatorship of her father for the foreseeable future. Recently it was claimed the singer could regain control of her financial assets as early as this month, almost four years after shaving her head and starting her downward spiral. However, there are currently no plans to end the

conservatorship and Spears herself is said to be happy for it to continue at present. Spears’s long-awaited seventh album is expected to be released in spring 2011. SARAH HARDING is releasing her debut solo album next year, according to reports. The GIRLS ALOUD singer, who has starred in a number of films since the band called a hiatus, is said to be working on a set of edgy songs similar to LADY GAGA’S sound. She is also set to be mimicking her style, with a complete makeover planned to coincide with its release. She apparently wants to be edgier than ever before and has already been consulting her stylist about some ideas she has for custom-made outfits. This could be interesting. LEONA LEWIS has revealed that she has recorded a track with DAVID GUETTA for her forthcoming album. The singer recently told fans that she has worked on a song with the French hit maker, who has previously worked with BLACK EYED PEAS, AKON and KELLY ROWLAND. The Bleeding Love star also admitted that her third studio set was still in the very early stages and that she is currently experimenting with different sounds. Lewis finally confirmed that her next album, which she has yet to name, will be released in Summer 2011.

Country music legend WILLIE NELSON may face a significant period of jail time following his arrest for possession of marijuana. Reports suggest the singer would face a sentence of between six months and two years if found guilty of the offence. Nelson was arrested last month after police officials searched his tour bus and discovered six ounces (170 grams) of cannabis. Nelson claimed he had been using the drug for medicinal purposes, as it is legal to do so in California – where the drug was grown. Not sure if he can get out of it that easy. JUSTIN BIEBER has reportedly begun to lose his voice to puberty. Bieber has started working with a specialist in order to keep his voice from breaking. Justin is physically developing at a slower rate than most guys so his voice is only breaking now. Apparently it is not uncommon for young singers to have to work with a specialist – it was the same case for Bieber’s mentor USHER. SUSAN BOYLE has dropped a possibly tongue-in-cheek hint that she would like to work with RIHANNA in the not too distant future. The Wild Horses star, who recently released her sophomore album The Gift, said she would like to work with the Rude Boy star, as Boyle recently held Rihanna’s new LP Loud off the top of the US album chart.

and loves the stripped-back, simple feel of it. The I Turn To You star, who has notched up 10 solo top 40 hits, revealed last year that her next album will have big rock numbers. News of another SPICE GIRL now, and GERI HALLIWELL is reportedly following in the footsteps of her former bandmate and planning to re-launch her solo career. Geri released three albums following her exit from the girl group and scored eight top 10 singles – four of which topped the UK chart. According to reports, Halliwell is now setting up her own label to release her new music, and is working closely with a girl band she founded and will mentor through that label. NE-YO has unveiled a string of UK arena tour dates for 2011. The singer, who is currently promoting his new record Libra Scale, will play six arena shows across the country in February and March this year. The jaunt, his first set of gigs in the UK since 2009, kicks off in Glasgow in February and wraps up in Newcastle in March. Ne-Yo scored his third number single last year with Beautiful Monster, while Libra Scale, his forth studio set, charted at number 11. DEREK HOUGH’S stepdad has reportedly said that CHERYL COLE is moving to Los Angeles to be with the professional dancer. It has been rumoured and reported that Cole has signed a one-year deal to be a judge on the US version of the X Factor. The GIRLS ALOUD star will apparently relocate to California once the Surrey home she shared with former husband ASHLEY COLE is sold. The US X Factor is scheduled to start shooting in spring.

MEL C is working on new music, according to reports. The singer, who has released four solo albums away from the SPICE GIRLS, is said to be writing songs with exRAZORLIGHT drummer-turnedsolo-singer Andy Burrows. ‘‘

I've always loved listening to pop music but it's been a natural thing for me to sing classical music

’’

Katherine Jenkins (born 29 June 1980) is a Welsh mezzo-soprano. She is a classicalpopular crossover singer, who performs across a spectrum of operatic arias, popular songs, musical theatre and hymns. Her first four studio albums went to the top of the classical charts, making her the fastest-selling mezzo-soprano in history. She is young, beautiful, successful and talented yet, rather than applauding this, many of the press seem to focus on portraying her as a stroppy diva. With this in mind, I had to admit I was slightly nervous about the interview. What if she refused to answer the questions? What should I do if she had a tantrum and stopped the interview? Let me tell you this: she couldn't be a nicer person. She was sweet, kind, thoughtful and witty. She completely won me over and I think that this young lady should be portrayed as someone the next generation can look up to, admire and be inspired by. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Why did you decide classical over a pop career? I had never heard any classical music growing up. I sang in church and while having singing lessons the teacher started recommending classical songs to me. I didn't necessarily fall in love with it to begin with, but I wanted something that was really going to suit my voice. I've always loved listening to pop music but it's been a natural thing for me to sing classical music. How did your career take off? I had been singing all my life since childhood and I then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music for four years. In the last year of the course, I made a demo with a friend, which got passed to Universal. It was a lot of fate and being in the right place at the right time. I was called in to meet with them and audition. They then offered me a sixalbum record deal. How did it feel when you were offered this straight away? I cried all afternoon. I just couldn't believe it had happened like that. They took an hour to let me know and I remember calling my Mum and telling her I didn't think it had gone very well as they had sent me home from the audition. It was like something out of the movies.

I am from and with my background, I am a good example that it doesn't have to be like that; it's all about how you're introduced to it. Other artists as well, not just me, are trying to give classical music a makeover, make it appeal to a younger audience. There are artists coming through on programmes like Britain's Got Talent who are singing this kind of music, so more people have opened up to it. What are you listening to on your iPod right now? Everything from Rihanna, Eminem, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Westlife, Take That, Madonna‌ anything poppy and current. How do you protect your voice? I do lot of things; it's become part of daily routine. I don't drink alcohol a week before singing, I drink lots of water, I don't eat dairy products on the day that I'm singing and I don't eat three hours before I sing. If I have two performances in a row, I won't speak from the time I finish to the time of rehearsal.

What's the most bizarre rumour you have read about yourself? That I was buying a huge mansion in Gloucestershire because it had a Strictly Come Dancing style ballroom, and I was bidding against Tony and Cherie Blair for it. Why do you think you have such a wide fan base compared with other classical singers? I try to make classical music more accessible. I feel strongly that this kind of music should be for everyone. I know it can be a bit intimidating sometimes; therefore when I make my albums, I try to think about the people who are already interested in classic music and also those who are into pop music with a classic twist. I like trying to make it appeal to a wider audience. How do you think you've changed the influences on classical music? If you look back five or six years, people had an idea of what classical music was all about. It was for an older audience, quite an elitist thing, and that's so wrong. Coming from where

I think it's important that they're shown that they're appreciated out there and they're not forgotten. It is never glamorous out there; once my stage was two lorries back to back, a couple of blocks to make up stairs in an empty aircraft hanger, while I sang to 400 people sitting on floor. I really didn't know how they were going to react, but they all started singing along. I can't stop thinking about it when I come home. I think about all the people I have met and all their stories. It is not just about singing: it's about going out there chatting with them and having one-on-one time. Sometimes they'll say stuff to you that they won't say to their colleagues because they don't want to affect morale. So yes, it is quite hard when I get home, but it makes it easier to think that I'm going out again.

Isn't that difficult? Well, I am naturally a chatterbox; I love gossiping, catching up with everyone. The voice is a muscle so the only way to rest it is to not speak, and when you talk you are still using it. You lost your father at a very young age. How did that change or shape you? I see things differently now. Life is too short; you need to live every day and take every opportunity. Dad was very encouraging of my singing so I think he would love all of what is happening to me now, and I sing everything for him. What's your proudest moment? Going out singing for the troops to Afghanistan and Iraq and performing out there. It's amazing! It's my passion going out and entertaining them. They're the most amazing people, to be out there for six to nine months away from families, in horrible situations.

Does it annoy you that some critics believe you have made it just because of your looks rather than your talent? It can be frustrating because I trained very hard to be able to sing like this. With classical music I hope it will always be about the music first. You can't please everyone; I've stopped listening to critics and stop reading things like that. What does being Welsh mean to you? I'm very proud of where I come from; I feel like I've grown up with a lot of music. There is a big heritage of music in Wales; we are always singing. Being Welsh is all about family values, and understanding that is something I take with me. How does it feel to be the official mascot for the Wales rugby union team? Growing up in Wales, you absolutely love rugby; we all love rugby, Any time you can be involved in rugby is brilliant; again it's one of my proudest moments.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Did you enjoy working on the series Popstar to Operastar? I think it showed people how difficult this kind of music is. Opera is so much more technical that pop, and you also have to sing in another language. It gave people an insight into the world of opera and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You starred in the Doctor Who Christmas special‌ Is this a change of career for you? I never thought of doing any acting but having done the Doctor Who series it really captures the imagination and it's such an iconic show. It was much fun and I had the most amazing time. I'd love to do something like that again. Who would you like to collaborate with and why? I'm so lucky to have been able to collaborate with classical people I admire like Andrea Bocelli, so I'd like to be able to collaborate with someone from a different musical genre like Lady Gaga or Michael Buble. I love Lady Gaga; she's brill. I have always wanted to see her in concert, but we both performed on the Royal Variety Show last year so I did get to see a bit of her in rehearsal, which was pretty cool. You're 30th was in June‌ How did you celebrate? Because I had been away so much last year, I got the whole family together and went to a country hotel and had a couple of days in the spa having dinners. It was really chilled but lovely. What's next for you? I am going to start making the new album this month and I am still working on releasing my albums in America. I would also like to do some opera in the next couple of years. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? I would love to still be in this very lucky position of making albums and touring, and that people still want to listen to me. Oh, hopefully by that time I will have a family of my own.

LATEST TRENDS

health&beauty COMPILED BY NICOLA McGEORGE

A NEW YEAR and a new start‌ It's time to organise your bathroom cupboards, clear out your make-up bag and throw away all the products that are over a year old. While you are at it, instead of sticking to the same beauty routine that you have been using for the past 20 years, why not try updating it and refreshing your look. Throw in a few new products and you may be surprised at the outcome. The following are a selection of products that I think you should definitely try in 2011.

LATEST TRENDS SHINE ON While getting my colour done by renowned hair technician Jonathan Yeadon, at Reflections, he introduced me to what he called the must-have product for 2011: Kerastase Elixir Ultime. The alchemy of four precious oils to beautify hair, it is a versatile treatment enriched with maize, argan, camellia and pracaxi oils to create a luxurious elixir for all hair types. He explained that it would be perfect for my hair (dry, fragile and basically in bad condition), so, what are my thoughts? A little goes a very long way and spreads easily onto the hair, so only a tiny amount is needed. As a leave-in conditioner on towel-dried hair, it made my hair feel more nourished, softer, smoother and less Worzel Gummidge looking. It also protects the hair from heat damage, making it more pliable for styling, and can be used as a finishing serum. For the latter, it is true genius because it gives both shine and volume – it doesn't weigh your hair down. I walked out of the salon looking like a hair model. A DEEP CLEAN In the cooler months my skin tends to get rather dry, so I am loving Oskia´s Perfect Cleanser, a liquid balm that cleans, softens and puts the life back into my skin. It is rich in youth-boosting vitamins, minerals, prebiotics, essential fatty acids and natural emollients to deeply cleanse, de-congest, brighten and restore moisture levels. Once combined with water, this nutrient-rich balm becomes a light milk that penetrates deeply and lifts away pore-blocking impurities to leave your skin feeling thoroughly clean and comfortable. oskiaskincare.com

SEEING RED If you tend to stick to neutral lipstick shades and would rather cut off your arm than wear red, I challenge you to try Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Red and not be converted. It is formulated with soothing botanical extracts – including avocado, jojoba and chamomile oils, and aloe extract – to keep lips soft and supple. Scented with a hint of vanilla, it is pigment-packed but just on the right side of sheer so it isn't too intense. It doesn't wash the colour from your face but still gives a mega-glossy, super-glamorous look. bobbibrowncosmetics.com

A NATURAL SCENT Regular readers will know that I am a big fan of organic and natural products, so I was delighted when the cutest little box arrived on my doorstep from the team at The Green Grocery – a very honest, organic and natural company. Each product is 100 per cent organic and certified, and the packaging is even 100 per cent recyclable. I was sent the Love Letter, a rose and jasmine solid balm fragrance with a base note of sandalwood. It is truly floral! Created and designed for any woman who loves the smell of a flower garden, this scent invokes memories of love and romance green-grocery.co.uk

THE SWISH FACTOR I may sound like a hair care snob here, but I tend to favour brands that are slightly more on the costly side. I certainly have not used Pantene since I was in my twenties. However, Pantene Aqua Light Shampoo has managed to change my mind. See, I will admit it when I am wrong. It behaved like a much more high-end product, thanks to microscopic watersoluble cleansing beads. It cleans properly, rinses easily and leaves hair soft. My hair has never felt so light and clean. pantene.com

FEELING FLUSHED Le Metier De Beaute Blushing Bronze Duet is the ultimate suit-all blush and bronze. This compact embraces the incomparable pairing of the brand's signature Radiance Powder Rouge in a beautiful cool pink shade with a fabulous bronzer (a sheer, light bronze powder.) It enlivens the complexion and makes you look instantly awake and healthy. The intensity can be built up considerably and the blush can also be worn alone and still look natural, which speaks volumes about the quality of Le Metier de Beaute's pigments. metierbeaute.com

HEALTH & FITNESS

Getting back to exercise after Christmas One of the world's leading personal trainers, Matt Roberts is responsible for creating some of the most famous physiques‌ including Tom Ford, Naomi Campbell, John Galliano and Amanda Holden.

very January we all have good intentions and New Year resolutions to get fit and lose some of the Christmas weight, and a bit more. However, all too often these good intentions don't last much beyond the start of February because the initial motivation is lost and the routine is broken. So how can your resolutions last you well into the New Year and beyond? I outline below some of the tips that I find most important to help you get focused and stay focused.

E

HEALTH & FITNESS

two.

one.

Set yourself goals… It is a wellproven fact that, if you set yourself realistic goals and write them down somewhere you will see them every day, you are more likely to achieve them. Make sure that you set yourself a goal that you can achieve, with hard work. Most importantly set yourself a timescale for the goal that is achievable, not two stone (13 kilograms) in two weeks. Also, make sure you set yourself small goals along the way so you regularly feel good about achieving something. It is very hard to keep focused on a goal that is 10 months away. A small goal that you can achieve in four weeks, that keeps you on track for your 10month goal, is easy to reach and maintain motivation for.

Find activities that you enjoy… If you make it hard work for yourself by taking up activities you don't enjoy, it is almost impossible to keep it going. Try lots of different activities and take up the ones you enjoy the most.

three.

Find a training partner… Find a friend who has similar goals to you and buddy up so you become reliant on each other. Two of you feeling that you are going to let the other one down by not doing your exercise session will keep you going and make it fun.

four.

Exercise and diet go hand in hand… if you are going to tackle one make sure you also embrace the other. That way you will achieve your goals faster and also give yourself the best chance of maintaining those goals once you are there.

five.

Make sure you constantly change the activities you do… From a motivational point of view it will keep it more interesting and from a physical point of view it doesn't allow your body the chance to get used to one type of exercise. This confusion makes the body adapt and helps you keep on seeing good results.

Good luck! Matt Roberts

CLINIC & BOUTIQUE

A ROUND-UP OF HEALTH, FITNESS AND BEAUTY NEWS FROM ALONG THE COAST MARBELLA'S COSMETIC DENTAL CLINIC The Hollywood smile

HALO BOUTIQUE The home of hair and beauty in Marbella Providing the latest hair and beauty treatments with the best quality products available on the market, and a talented team of professionals who are re-trained on a regular basis, Halo can offer up to the minute treatments such as a 12-week blow dry (Brazilian), Shellac and Minx nails, and Dermalogica beauty treatments. Halo have recently added Biosculpture Gel to their nail products. This is a gel that comes in a wide range of fabulous colours. I have recently tried the treatment myself and the results are flawless. Writing this three weeks after the treatment, there are no chips or smudges to my nails. The nail varnish is applied in gel form, so you effectively have fake nails painted on top of your own, but they look and feel completely natural. The gel dries under UV light, which means it's hard and durable against everyday wear and tear. Most importantly, your nails are dry before you leave the salon and will stay looking fresh. There is no damage to the nail after sustained use, as with acrylic nails, and they stay chip-free for up to three weeks. This is a form of investment for your nails so, even if you're a bit spent out this January, invest in Biosculpture and treat yourself. Laura-Jane Bruce. If your New Year's resolution is to improve your appearance, then teeth whitening is a must. Quick and easy, it can literally knock years off your face in only 20 minutes. If this is something you are interested in, I would highly recommend seeing a professional dentist rather than popping into a beauty or hair salon. Marbella's Cosmetic Dental Clinic offers a 20-minute Britewhite walk in laser whitening. Before the procedure itself, Dr Gerhard Steinruck recommends that you must visit your dentist to have your teeth cleaned professionally; otherwise the

whitening machine will not work to its maximum potential. Dr Steinruck used an ultrasound stick to get the hard layer off my teeth. This smoothed the surface ready for whitening. He then used “airflow”, a high-pressure air salt crystal mixture which blows all the dirt off the surface of the teeth. I was now prepped and ready for whitening. The whitening gel uses a high concentrate of carbamide, 35-36 per cent compared with the seven to eight per cent used in a home whitening kit, meaning it is much more effective. Dr Steinruck's assistant made sure that my lips, gums and tongue were protected from the acidity in the gel and then applied it to my teeth, covered my eyes in some funky '80s glasses and started the laser. The laser itself activates the carbamide to draw colour pigments out of the teeth. After 20 minutes my new smile was revealed… Simon Cowell eat your heart out. It costs €100 for a 20-minute session. Most people need to complete three sessions, which is 60 minutes in total. It is more convenient to be split into sessions and makes the teeth less sensitive. Nicola McGeorge. REAL ESTATE IMPRESARIO, INDEFATIGABLE PARTY-GOER, PATRON OF THE ARTS, GENEROUS CHARITY SUPPORTER… KRISTINA SZEKELY IS THE QUEEN OF MARBELLA SOCIETY

t is always good to start a new year in a positive frame of mind, so I am happy to be able to say that 2010 ended much better than it began. Looking back, we had a good spring and summer, and even November – which is usually quiet – was quite a good month. Luckily, when one country is struggling, another is doing better. As I’ve said before, the money always goes around. Last year, for example, we had more people visiting from the Middle East. A member of the Qatar emir’s family even bought Málaga football club! These Middle Eastern visitors are, in a sense, re-discovering Marbella and finding out it is still as good as Beirut or the Red Sea in Egypt. The Russians have also been keen to make their new homes here. They feel good on the Costa del Sol, their kids are at local schools and they learn Spanish very quickly, so they integrate very well. I know people can get by with English only but, as someone who speaks seven languages, I can say it is so much easier to integrate when you speak at least some Spanish. This year there will continue to be growing interest from European countries. Germany is now stronger financially and the Scandinavian countries haven’t felt the recession as much as others, so we have to concentrate on those markets. The Indian visitors also feel at home here, and integrate very well. All these nationalities love the Mediterranean lifestyle and, for those from the northern countries, there is also the weather – the Russians have to put up with freezing minus-30 degree temperatures back home in winter! As for the national market – the Spaniards from Madrid and northern Spain – Marbella is still the favourite destination but Valencia is going to

56

attract good business in 2011, as the high-speed AVE rail link was due to be inaugurated towards the end of last month, meaning the city will be just one and a half hours from Madrid. Valencia has beaches and culture, including the Prince Felipe Museum of Science in the City of Arts and Sciences complex, but it’s not as international, cosmopolitan and elite as the Costa del Sol. It has quite a lot going for it, but not the charm of the Andalucians! Even in up times, January and February are the best months to buy because there are fewer people around and not so much competition from other buyers. So you get the best prices. And, on that note, I await everyone coming to my door to gain access to the best buys! These include bank repossessions from a year ago that have now gone through the courts and are available. We have one excellent villa in Elviria, on a 1,000 square metre plot, for just over €700,000, and another villa behind the mosque on the Golden Mile. Of the main developments we are selling, people realise what a good buy El Embrujo Banús is; and La Corniche is due to receive its first occupational licence as I write this diary. It has competitive prices, beautiful views, 24-hour gated security and large terraces. We also have one of the most beautiful villas on the Golden Mile. On the social scene, the highlight – as always at this time of the year – was the annual San Nicolás gala dinner for Concordia at Puente Romano. No one does it better than Princess Marie Louise of Prussia and her team of volunteers. Two hundred and fifty people attended and they helped raise €50,000, partly from a raffle of gifts donated by local businesses. The funds raised go to helping AIDS sufferers and their

www.societylivingmagazine.com

families on the Coast. Members of the Rotary Club in Marbella also have two fund-raising galas every year, in summer and in the lead up to Christmas, and the event at La Meridiana one week before Concordia’s was a great success. The CIT (Centro de Iniciativas Turísticas) business awards held at Don Carlos Leisure Resort & Spa attracted 300 guests, and it was good to note that the general mood was that things are moving on. We all just have to work harder at it. Another important date on the calendar was the Made in Italy with Love event at Gran Meliá Don Pepe, organised by Italian entrepreneur Elizabeth Thompson in aid of the Cesare Scariolo Foundation. In spite of the difficult year, people are still keen to celebrate over the festive season, so there were quite a few wonderful parties last month, including one very pleasant personal surprise for me. In Spain it is traditional for someone celebrating their birthday to invite guests to lunch or dinner, but this year I was delighted to be entertained by friends at Polynesian’s – though I did still have a small dinner at home. So it was two birthday celebrations. One of the nicest dinners was for a group of us who had also been together the month before at a birthday celebration in Zafra (Extremadura). This time we celebrated at Maxwells restaurant and piano bar. It’s almost become like a national social circuit, with friends from Marbella, Madrid and other parts of Spain meeting up in our various home cities at different times of the year. In Madrid, for example, we had a superb lunch at the famous José Luis Restaurant. Back on the Coast, young copla and flamenco singer Antonio Cortés performed at the Nerja caves (he is actually from Nerja); and I saw a film

version of Swan Lake at the Plaza del Mar cinema in Marbella. where they show opera classics throughout the year (La Traviata was the last one of the 2010 season). I had seen Swan Lake with Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in London years ago but this was just as incredible. It’s not live but you see so much more close-up, and the movements are just amazing. I would highly recommend this to anyone. As I write this Spain’s national Cuatro TV channel (Channel 4) have just finished filming in Marbella – at the Fashion Villa boutique – for their popular Callejeros programme, which is always great publicity for Marbella. The episode was due to be screened on New Year’s Eve. Finally, I wish everyone a great New Year and hopefully you can forget the bad times in 2010, because 2011 will be better. We have to turn the page and open a new chapter.

FINE DINING

BONO’S BEACH RESTAURANT

Cosy and fun winters by the sea TEXT LAURA-JANE BRUCE PHOTOS RUTH JONES

S

ociety Living had the pleasure of dining at Bono's Beach restaurant last month. Situated between Marbella and Elviria, the setting is nothing short of picturesque. The restaurant itself is set right on the soft golden beach of Marbella, with loungers to relax on and glorious views of the Mediterranean sea. You really couldn't ask for a better location. Just because the sun seems to have disappeared, and the temperature has dropped significantly, doesn't mean that all the beach restaurants have closed for winter. Bono's Beach are still abierto and ready to make your visit a memorable one. Bono's Beach are not only open for lunch and dinner: they also host some fantastic parties. Throughout summer they held many fiestas, and do not plan on stopping just because of the change in weather. Every weekend, Bono's Beach are hosting Jazz Sundays, which for ¤15 includes a cold buffet, barbecued skewers and live jazz music from 2pm by Thierry Luce, who creates a lively and elegant atmosphere. Then, from 6pm, DJs spin the best funk and disco on the Costa del Sol. The sun beds and outside tables looked extremely inviting during our visit, but unfortunately the temperature wasn't quite on our side. However, it is easy to see why Bono's Beach have such a strong clientele, who return again and again. As they have now been open for over two years, and have such a strong relationship with Bono's Beach Restaurant Urb. Playa del Arenal, Marbella Tel. 952 839 236 bonosbeach.com

their returning customers, Bono's Beach strive to regularly change the special dishes on their menu, and consistently produce new ideas for meals and events. When we arrived, there was a crackling fire burning and a real wintery feel to the décor. The lighting was full of passionate reds and vibrant yellows and projected a warm and welcoming aura.

Argentinean head chef Federico D'anna has been in the food business for nine years, and creates stunning dishes that can only be described as masterpieces. His love of food is projected in the dishes we were served, and the bilingual staff were extremely helpful. We were served a selection of dishes chosen specially for us; the creative menu was full of delectable dishes so it would have been very hard to choose. We dined on a selection of three starters. The first was a six-pepper salad, which included a variety of peppers and prawns. The fresh and crisp flavours really shone through and the

colours of the peppers brought a fun lightheartedness to the dish. Secondly we were served tuna tataki with wasabi mayonnaise, soy sauce and ginger. The dish was fragrant and delectable, and cleansed the palate ready for our third starter. This was a seafood salad, which was brought freshly smoked straight from the kitchen. The wafting smoke as the waiter removed the top bowl highlighted the authentic flavour of the seafood's deep-smoked essence. For our mains, we were fortunate enough to try two fabulous dishes; both as delicious as the other. Firstly, duck maigret with vitelotte (an ancestor of the blue-violet potato) and passion sauce with peaches. The duck was tender and the combination of the duck and the peaches was an interesting challenge on the palate. Our final main was red tuna, cream of carrots, ginger and sea bass caviar. This is the most popular dish at Bono's Beach, and it's easy to see why. The red tuna was succulent and worked brilliantly with the smooth carrot purée and rich caviar. To round off our meal, we were served a sticky toffee pudding, with double cream and a toffee sauce to accompany it. The pudding was moist and was the perfect end to our wintery visit. The restaurant offers a peaceful atmosphere and the superb location transports you to thoughts of exotic far-away lands. The fresh home cooking is evoked through the simple, tasty and well-balanced menu. Bono's Beach also offer a large selection of glamorous cocktails, so head down to sample a few and enjoy the beautiful view and sparkling atmosphere.

911 Speedster

MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH TAKES A LOOK AT THE EVOLUTION OF A SPORTS CAR CLASSIC‌ STILL WELL-TUNED TO THE TIMES

The mid-1950s 356 Speedster was a pure fun car in its time because of its overall simplicity of purpose and execution. However, the late '80s Carrera 3.2 Speedster was a hedonistic statement in an age where greed was good and showing off was the norm. In the post-recovery early '90s, the 964 Speedster was quite consciously more of the same. In this respect, the purpose of these obviously impractical open sports cars has changed over the years with the ebb and flow of society, influenced by both owners and onlookers. Rather than remaining pure fun cars to indulge enthusiasts who would use them for what they were, these cars evolved into trophies. Porsche then skipped two generations and there were no Speedster versions of the 993 or 996. But now the 911 Speedster is back, even though only 356 will ever be made. Most importantly, it is a brilliant fun machine that engages the senses on more than one level, and is also a much more complete car than its predecessors. 66

he new 911 Speedster also follows the Sport Classic as the second limited edition 997-based model to come out of Porsche's Exclusive Department, which incidentally celebrates its 25th birthday this year. Porsche are definitely making good on their promise to bring the successor to the original Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) department at Zuffenhausen Werke 1 more into the limelight with today's new breed of clients as well as stalwart Porsche buyers. Where a limited run of 250 numbered Sport Classics were built earlier this year, there will be 356 Speedsters, with deliveries starting in Europe first during December. The 250 limit of the Sport Classic had no particular significance, but the run of 356 Speedsters commemorates the model number of the first Porsche Speedster from 1954. “The Speedster project came out of a discussion on what Porsche's Exclusive Department could do as a follow on to the Sport Classic, particularly with an open car,” explained Oliver Herting, product manager of Porsche's Exclusive & Tequipment department for the 911 model range. “As the first 911 Speedster was launched in 1989, it was fitting that the next limited

68

www.societylivingmagazine.com

edition car should be a Speedster,” he said. “ We sold 170 narrow bodied versions and 2,103 wide bodied cars, proving that the latter style was far more popular with customers.” While there was a 964-based Speedster, there was never officially a 993 model. However, the last Speedster model made by Exclusive was a one off or, to be precise, a two-off, based on the 993. These two cars, one green and one silver, were specially commissioned for two wealthy customers in the US and Europe. The current recession has shifted the balance of Porsche sales across the world. Five years ago, 49 per cent of production went to the US but, with the US economy hard hit by the financial crisis and the Far East booming, only 30 per cent of the 356 Speedsters are bound for the US. Considering that open cars, Speedsters more so than Cabriolets, command even better money down the line, the asking price of €200,000, the same as the Sport Classic, is not unreasonable. Adding additional value to justify the fact, the Speedster comes with a full complement of standard equipment including PDK, PCCB brakes and sat-nav. Unfortunately, because it is

based on the Carrera 2 floorpan, the larger 90litre fuel tank is not part of the package. The PDK fitment was decided upon for two major reasons. A large proportion of the cars will end up in the US and Asia where owners prefer automatic gearboxes. Also, the more leisurely pace that you drive an open car makes it the more logical choice. “It is a cruising car, not a race car,” explained Oliver Herting. Where the Sport Classic was only offered in one colour, prospective Speedster owners have the choice of either blue or white. So far the take-up rate has been 60 per cent blue and 40 per cent white, except for the Belgian market where all the cars sold so far have been white. The Speedster's bespoke paintwork and interior makes a big difference to your experience of owning and driving this car. Distancing the Speedster from a normal 911 Cabriolet in this respect makes it look and feel even more special.

ON THE ROAD The vocabulary used in the interior is much more subtle than the Sport Classic, which can overwhelm the senses with the extent of its richness of colour and texture. The Speedster interior, by comparison is a straightforward black leather interior with highlights colour-coded to the bodywork either Pure Blue or Carrera White – with a few details like the handbrake pull in aluminium. It is simple but effective. The Fuchs style alloy wheels are the same as fitted to the Sport Classic and are 8.5J and 11.5J x 19-inch with 235/35ZR19 and 305/30ZR19 tyres. Interestingly, the ostensibly more sporting GTS Coupe only has 8.0J and 11.0J x 19-inch wheels, albeit of a different style. The Speedster rear track is two millimetres wider than the GTS, and this is down to the different widths and offsets of the two wheel styles. The motor has the Exclusive Powerkit, and is thus in the identical state of tune to the Sport Classic. The Powerkit brings ported and polished cylinder heads with balanced combustion chambers, and a new variable resonance intake manifold with six vacuumcontrolled flaps. These transition between power and torque-orientated lengths to provide the optimum cylinder charge throughout the engine's working range. The final additions are a carbon-fibre airbox and a remapped ECU. The resulting 408hp arrives at 7,300rpm, with 420Nm of torque on tap from 4,200 to 5,600rpm. But this factory-tuned motor is not just about performance against the stopwatch. The efficiency gains are evident throughout the rev band, with the motor feeling responsive low down, gutsy in the mid-band and strong at the top. It also makes a nicer noise than any other 911 model this side of a GT3 RS. The Speedster shell is modified from the Cabriolet, but with a completely new front bulkhead section carrying the bespoke shorter A-pillars and front windscreen surround, and new metalwork aft of the cabin for the longer rear deck cover.” explained Dominik Beierl, Leader of the Speedster body engineering team. “The front and rear aprons and the side sill covers are also unique to this car, and the headlamp bezels have a black background instead of silver.” he said. After the Speedster shell has been painted and married to its mechanicals on the normal production line at Zuffenhausen, where build is slotted in between other 911 models, the cars are taken to the Exclusive department next door for the unique limited edition interior to be installed. This labour intensive work takes two days, after which the car is given its final checks and prepped for shipping. Because the front screen frame is 60 millimetres shorter than the Cabriolet's and becomes wider towards its base, the roof has to be both commensurately longer and wider at the front than the Cabriolet's. The Speedster ends up 40 millimetres lower overall than the Carrera S Cabriolet.

ON THE ROAD

Its longer, wider profile adds three kilograms more to the weight of the folding roof, and the manually operated folding mechanism and larger rear deck add further extra weight. With two layers above the seats and one behind, the roof is less well insulated than the Cabriolet's, and more like the Boxster's. It also has less sound insulation. However, in practice, the heavier roof assembly is counterbalanced by the use of the aluminium doors from the Turbo, PCCB brakes and deletion of the rear seat. Thus, the Speedster ends up tipping the scales at 1,540 kilograms, the same kerb weight as the Carrera 2S Cabriolet. In terms of drag coefficient, the two cars are again the same at 0.31, the added frontal area of the Speedster's wider roof being counterbalanced by its lower profile. The Powerkit engine whirrs into life with a more baritone exhaust note than the Cabriolet's. As you accelerate away, a fine overlay of muscular flat-six noises add up to a soundtrack distinctively different from normal 3.6 or 3.8 litre 997 motors. It is undoubtedly the best 997 acoustic this side of a GT3 RS and, as I said when I drove the Sport Classic, my only gripe is that the EU drive-by noise regulations have throttled it to the point where even with the roof down and in a tunnel another six decibels worth of this rich flat-six ear candy would be very welcome. Just ambling along the coast road between Nice and Monaco on a warm, sunny afternoon, the Speedster quickly proves itself to be an addictive driving partner. The ride on the latest generation PASM suspension is firm but absorbent, and even the large rubber on this car does not manage to excite the topless bodywork into any scuttle shake histrionics over the winter-savaged roads of Provence. As with all 997s, the power steering is medium weighted and does require some heft on tight hairpin bends, but this is one of the things that makes the car feel so stable at speed. Even when you are driving, and not consciously looking for the differences between the Speedster and the Cabriolet, there is still something distinctively unique about this car. The noticeably shorter windscreen is always in your periphery of vision, and every time you look down at the dashboard and the instruments you see the unique Speedster features that you have paid so handsomely for. Make no mistake: unlike with Speedsters of yore, Porsche Exclusive has made sure you always know you are getting your money's worth. 70

ON THE ROAD

“Just ambling along the coast road the Speedster quickly proves itself to be an addictive driving partner”

Up in the mountains above Nice, far from the crowded coast, I found some challenging roads complete with hairpins joined by short straights and plenty of medium speed bends. Importantly, they were deserted enough to allow a fast pace with good bursts of speed and some determined cornering as well. With the paddle shifters working for their living at last, I was really able to savour the power, handling and braking inherent in the Speedster. But to say it simply delivered a driving experience like a tuned Cabriolet would be selling the car short, because it adds up to far more than that. Savouring the driving experience involves three of your five senses: sight, hearing and touch. The finely honed exhaust note, the extra urge of the Powerkit motor and the limited slip differential with its 22/27 percent locking action on acceleration and braking make all the difference if you break the mould as a Speedster driver and decide to play racer. The 4.4-second 0-100km/h (62mph) time and 305km/h (189.5mph) top speed are impressive but hardly seem relevant here. As we noted before, this car is a cruiser not a racer. The new Speedster is a captivating car that offers much more driving and ownership enjoyment than first appearances might suggest. While it may not work as everyday transport unless you live in a sun-drenched place, compared to its predecessors, it is a car that you can enjoy owning in a relatively painless manner. Sunset is always a special time of day for me, especially from a vantage point where the air is clear. And it was on the top of that mountain above Nice, as the sun set above the low clouds, that the compelling raison d'être for owning a 911 Speedster became crystal clear to me. I spent most of the drive back down to the coast savouring my experience of one of nature's finest light shows. 72

www.societylivingmagazine.com

I have owned 911 Coupes for many years and would not normally consider a 911 Cabriolet, as I do not consider it as hard-core a driving machine. However, I was really surprised when the new 911 Speedster hit a sweet spot with me. Part of what makes the Speedster so appealing is the fact that it is a car that nobody really needs, and it plays that part so very well. By ditching the practical everyday car aspect that makes the Cabriolet such a good all rounder, it becomes that much more singular in purpose. In this roundabout way, it fully justifies its existence. And so the wonderfully hedonistic 911 Speedster just became the fourth ideal Porsche in my mythical garage that already contains a 2.8 RSR, a GT3 RS and a Carrera GT.

BUSINESS PROFILE

THE NEW MARBELLA …and the people behind its success Interview by Andy Clark

C

ontinuing our series on people who are making a difference on the Coast, this month the Society Living team paid a visit to Tribeca 12 to chat with the Small World boys about life seven months into their latest project. As we enter Tribeca (just after lunch, expecting a quiet chat over coffee) we are greeted by raucous laughter, dance music and the somewhat amusing sight of four trendylooking, thirty-somethings dancing in front of a gigantic projected image – not what we were expecting! So why don't we start with a bit about who you are? Alistair Imrie: English-Scottish, born and raised in Saudi Arabia until moving to Spain in the '80s… I've lived and worked around the world, but I always end up wanting to come back to Marbella! John Small: Scottish-German, grew-up in Dubai and England, before meeting-up with Vik and Ali in Les Roches (hotel school) in Marbella… we all lived and worked together around the world before coming back to Spain to start Small World Café. Leandro Giménez-Vega: SpanishArgentinean, born in Argentina but lived in

Spain; studied in New York and London before coming home to set-up G. Vega Ceramics; went to school with these guys when we were younger and we've always hung out since then as mates – as well as now business partners! Victor Krensler: Swedish, lived in Belgium, Sweden and England but Spain will always be home to me… I've known all these guys since back in the day, at least 10 years each – wow, you guys are getting old! Kamil Bennis (unavailable at time of interview): “He's in Morocco at the moment on business – the guy's a legend in his own lifetime.” (John).

Tribeca 12 is looking great… did you get help?” We had some help sourcing furniture and decoration through our friend (interior design guru) Hayley Reed, but the look, choice of materials and final finishing – down to putting the wallpaper on the walls – was all us. We were going for Manhattan meets Marbella: a cross between Soho, NYC and Brick Lane, LON with a touch of Marbella glamour thrown-in for good measure! I'd say the theme was industrial chic… the solid concrete bar and the bricks

BUSINESS PROFILE (all reclaimed from London and at least 100 years old) with a wooden floor and vintage, eclectic furniture, gives it that “New York Loft” feel. You really did the wallpapering yourselves? Yes, we are thinking of opening a decorating business! To be fair, the wallpaper made it easy – quality stuff, as seen in the W Hotel in Barcelona – courtesy of our friends at Grey Goose (along with a few other bits and pieces.) That was very kind of them! Grey Goose have been great; we had only been open for a few months when they invited Tribeca 12 to become only the second “Grey Goose Embassy” in Andalucía.

Am I allowed to ask about the funky dancing when we arrived? Of course! We recently installed X-BOX 360's latest toy (the Kinect) on our HD projector screen. It's too much fun – similar to the Wii but is based entirely on your body movement, so there are no controllers; you are the controller. We bought it for our new Swagga parties, but it's been so popular with the adults that we just leave it on until the club fills up. When you say “adults”, of course you mean yourselves? LOL – actually this is the first time we've really been able to play it. Why, are you feeling up to the challenge?

If you're selling a lot of Grey Goose, then you're obviously appealing to a wealthier crowd? Our prices are very good, so Grey Goose sells well. Actually, there's quite a diverse crowd who come here because of the music we play, the quality of the sound system it's played on, and because of our location. We can fit about 220 people in the club at one time, making it a more personal, boutique club experience. Yes, someone told me it's the best sound quality he's heard down on the Coast… We were really lucky with our sound system; it was custom-made for a famous nightclub franchise due to open in Málaga that unfortunately fell through. We were able to buy half the system due for a club four or five times our size – it's so powerful that we can only play it at half volume, but the sound is crystal clear. Of course we have had to sound-proof everything so that nothing can be heard outside – we built Tribeca 12 ourselves, so even from the beginning it was a long-term commitment for all of us. DJs always love a good sound system… does that make a difference for you? It makes a difference. We have a great team of DJs (Nick Helm, Jean Marc and Gary Young) who've supported us through our opening, simply because they love playing here. We've even had a few well-known international DJs playing for fun (and free drinks!).

but in a safe environment. We have excellent security and a strict door control policy, plus we will be giving out special cards to those children who return again as a sort of VIP Identity Card. Do you find many people dining in Small World Café and partying later in Tribeca? We've had a lot of birthdays, some great events with people having dinner in Small World Café before moving on for a private event in Tribeca during the week, but it tends to be smaller groups on the weekends, dining first in SWC and then taking a table in Tribeca for the night. Small World Café is still going well then? Yes, we're very pleased – we've recently launched a new menu, tweaked the recipes of some old favourites and thrown in a bunch of new dishes. Our star chef Nico Tisone has come back from a month in Italy an inspired man and his specials just seem to get better each week. After an epic battle (culminating in a winnertakes-all ten-pin bowling match between our intrepid reporter LauraJane and Alistair) the Kinect Olympics finished 3-4 to Society Living. But who's counting? If Tribeca 12 is as much fun when it's open, I am their latest regular!

(So began the First Annual Society Living Team vs Small World Boys International Kinect Sports Game Olympics.) Now, where were we… I think you mentioned Swagga? We have just started a new “unders“ night (13 to 17-year-olds) called Swagga. We held a special Christmas Swagga on 11 December, which was a huge success, but it will be officially launching bi-weekly, 7pm-11pm from Friday 14 January. Obviously there will be no alcoholic or caffeine-based energy drinks served; it gives kids a chance to let their hair down a bit,

Tribeca 12 is open Wednesday and Thursday nights from 11pm to 6am and on Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm to 7am. Catch the Live “Candy” broadcast with Lick FM (103.6 FM) on the last Saturday of every month after 1am. For more information, visit smallworldcafe.com or Facebook search for “Tribeca 12”, join the group and be the first to hear about all their special events.

Versatile performer‌ for all music tastes

TOM RUST Tom Rust is a high-class, experienced vocalist, who performs on the Costa del Sol, in the UK and around the world. Managed by his wife Emma, Tom's performances range from large-scale corporate events and weddings to more intimate private parties. Where did your passion for music begin? It began at a very young age. I joined the school band when I was 13 and began singing at 16 years old. It was actually my brother who inspired me to join the school band, so I really have him to thank for initially giving me the nudge in the right direction. How did you pursue your career? Well, I moved to London aged 24, and worked as an in-house programmer and engineer for Morrison-Leahy Music, and actually had the opportunity to record a few tracks for Atlantic Records, which was a fantastic experience. I then met a guy called Nigel Goulding and we formed our own duo Step. We released a jazz dance track called If which did quite well abroad, and it gave me an invaluable insight into the music industry. Who else have you worked with? I met Pete Churchill at the Guild Hall who really inspired me, and then later had the chance to work with Laurie Holloway, Jeff Clyne, Trevor Tomkins, Nick Weldon and Malcolm Edmonstone at the Ventnor Jazz Divas Festival. This gave me the drive to want to perform.

How would you describe your style of music? My sound is quite smooth in style, and I can perform to suit all tastes of music, from the Rat Pack era to more contemporary music. I am often likened to Jamie Cullum because of the jazz but we're very different - I'm not so pop-genre and I think my vocal is a bit deeper. You've been quite successful within the music industry. Tell us more about that‌ Well, I have been fortunate enough to record both of my recent albums, Saints & Singers and Are We There Yet?, with the Malcolm Edmonstone Trio, and they are both available to download from all the major download sites such as iTunes, Napster and e-music. I also performed in the VIP suite at the Beijing Olympics, at the 2009 FA Cup final in the Bobby Moore Suite in Wembley with my jazz quartet and at a celebrity wedding in Ibiza with my function band; and I did a solo performance on the helipad of a private super yacht in Abu Dhabi.

Wow, any more? I've been lucky enough to perform at the London Press Club Ball for the past seven years now. It's an impressive charity event where around 450 of the UK's most influential press come to raise money. In your own words, if we booked you for an event, what would we be getting? I suppose the main thing is I'm not your average pub singer - I'm a professional vocalist. As you can see I perform songs spanning many generations, so the variety of music should appeal to everyone. I can sing subtle background music or songs to move people off their seats; I can perform solo, with a band, right up to a 31-piece orchestra with a string section. I can provide a package to suit any budget, venue and style of event. Contact for bookings: Emma Rust: (+34) 639 289 109 emma@customuk.com Tom Rust: (+44) (0)20 7281 2555 tomrust.info

Firstly, it is safer because a male can smell a female on heat from a very long distance, and they will do everything to escape and find that lovely lady. Females do the same: when they are on heat they want a boyfriend and they will also do everything to escape and find one. “In addition, males make a lot street dogs pregnant and these puppies end up with us in the animal shelter, which is not fair for the puppies. Males who are not castrated can contract prostate cancer later on and many old un-castrated males get tumours around the anal area. Females who are not done have a much bigger chance of getting breast cancer.” One of the dogs at the shelter seeking a home is Mr Scruff (right), a very sweet, easy and lovely elderly male (born on 13 January 2001) about 60 centimetres tall who loves to be
