his is proving to be a spectacular summer season for concerts – bringing back memories of the Coast’s golden years. Last month, the “Electric Lounge Lizard” himself, Bryan Ferry, was in town to perform at an überselect party marking the first anniversary of jeweller to the stars Stephen Webster’s Puerto Banús boutique; and, as we were going to press, fans were looking forward to a concert by Faithless, also in Marbella. Meanwhile, down the coast Marianne Faithfull – who, during her romantic relationship with Mick Jagger, inspired some of the Stones’ greatest hits, including Wild Horses – was just one of several top international stars performing at the Cervantes theatre in Málaga capital. This month, Gwen Dickey (lead vocalist of ´70s soul group Rose Royce) will be at Buddha Beach; Abba tribute band Bjorn Again will be performing at the Marbella bullring, with X Factor finalist Ruth Lorenzo; Kool and the Gang, the legendary kings of soul and disco, will be getting down on it at Puente Romano; and the Nueva Andalucía bullring will rock to the sounds of

Alexandra Burke – who graces our cover and talks exclusively to Society Living this issue – and boy band Boyzone. As the sizzling summer season reaches its halfway point, the partying continues apace: with most of the fun, at least during the day, enjoyed with a gusto at the Coast’s stunning beach clubs; before the evening revelry moves to al fresco restaurant terraces and Marbella’s ultra-chic nightclubs. Our photographers have been out and about covering the top parties and events – and you can check out their colourful chronicles of Costa glam and glitz in our pacesetting society section. For our fashion feature this month, we took our inspiration from Morocco, one of the hottest destinations of the moment, and dressed our very own “Bedouin Princess” in some great summer styles from the top local boutiques. From exotic to elegant… we took to the road in the new Rolls-Royce Ghost, and discovered how the iconic car marque has cruised effortlessly into the 21st century with an engineering tour de force aimed at the younger and more

Exotic and artistic sophistication The latest collection of gorgeous shoes from Patricia Rosales is entitled Treasures of Egypt, as she takes her inspiration from a fascination with Egyptian culture. The ready to wear collection enters a world of luxury that is surrounded by Egyptian pharaohs and queens mixed with refined sophistication and culminating in a modern and artistic range of footwear and jewellery. 12

Colours used in the palette include gold and black with materials such as snakeskin, which refers to the Egyptian symbol of the cobra. All the soles of the collection are marked with the Udjat, or the Eye of Horus, while other emblems are materialised by the use of semi-precious stones including coral and the lapis lazuli. patriciarosales.com

GLAMOUR DIGEST

Stunning jewellery inspired by the sea The beautiful new In Deep collection from internationally acclaimed jewellery designer Stephen Webster is an extension of the Jewels Verne fine jewellery collection, which was launched in 2009. The In Deep collection is a fabulous depiction of the divinely aquatic and includes an array of crustaceans and other inhabitants of the ocean. Stephen Webster comments that, after the frenzy that surrounded the Jewels Verne Crab Ring, they explored the seabed a little more and produced their most creative collection to date with spider crabs, jellyfish and many other aquatic designs. Delicate white gold chains are matched with sweeping diamond tentacles for the jellyfish jewellery, while hermit crabs emerge from blue sapphire and black diamondencrusted shells that are perched on bold cocktail rings. White pave diamonds also adorn the prawns, which wrap around the wearer’s finger, making this collection as covetable as any other from the brand. stephenwebster.com

CHIC STYLES AND ALLURING IDEAS Entrancingly fragrant The smells of summer are always so entrancing – the salty sea, freshly cut grass and tasty aromas from the barbecue. However, it’s not just what’s around us that needs to smell fragrant and inviting: we all need a little spruce up now and then and what better time to change your perfume or aftershave than when the weather has changed. Most of us have a winter fragrance and a summer fragrance and, speaking from experience, I can say many people don’t like to change them. But there are some great scents available this summer so why not spice it up a little. Thierry Mulger Alien Sunessence is the fragrance to wear this summer – with notes of pink grapefruit, exotic monoi flower and sensual white amber, you will immediately think of summer holidays, hot white sand and the cool sea when you spray it on. And, for him, Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Summer is a stimulating summer fragrance that has hints of mint, lavender and vanilla, ensuring he is smelling delicious with this light scent. theperfumeshop.com 14

CULTURAL CORNER book series Vampire Academy, which will surely appeal to all Twilight lovers. I One of the “actors of the moment”, Taylor Lautner, is to star in Abduction, about a boy who discovers that the people who raised him are not his real parents; this triggers a series of events, leaving him running for his life. Also to star are Maria Bello, Sigourney Weaver and Denzel Washington. I The Untitled Star Trek Sequel has a release date of 29 June 2012 and will star Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachory Quinto. I The Little Mermaid is to be made into a live action feature based on the Hans Christian Anderson story about a mermaid who gives up her life in the sea for a prince. I Guns, Girls and Gambling will star Christian Slater, Gary Oldman and Dane Cook as they chase for a priceless American Indian artifact stolen during a poker game at an Indian casino, with Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern cowboys, a six-foot-tall blond assassin, a frat boy, a corrupt sheriff and a prostitute. I Lindsay Lohan did not have a good month last month – she was allegedly punched by a waitress on her birthday night out then got sentenced to 90 days’ jail for violating her probation.

Movie of the Month Takers

Quick clips I Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson have been filming together for the 2011 film Water For Elephants about a man who joins the circus and tales about his life told when he is in his nineties. I Fans of the Scream films will be pleased to know there will be another trilogy of movies which will star originals such as Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox-Arquette as well as new stars including Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere and Adam Brody; with the slogan “New Decade. New Rules” there are sure to be some new twists and turns. Writer-director Kevin Williamson has been working on the scripts and films for years so hopefully they will go into production soon. I There’s a new Spiderman on the block…… Andrew Garfield is to play Peter Parker/Spiderman in the upcoming film due for release in July 2012 – the film is as yet untitled.

I Daniel Craig has replaced Robert Downey Jr in Cowboys and Aliens as Downey Jr left the film to fast track the next Sherlock Holmes film, which is due to start filming in October this year. Also returning for the Holmes sequel is Jude Law, who will also star in Martin Scorsese’s latest film, an adaptation of children’s novel Hugo Cabret about an orphan boy living in Paris, alongside Ben Kingsley and Sacha Baron Cohen. I Meryl Streep is apparently in talks to star in The Iron Lady, a biopic about former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, which is also said to star Jim Broadbent I Director M. Night Shyamalan has been working on a top secret film project with the script completed and possibly Bruce Willis and Gwyneth Paltrow to star, about a man who is searching for his missing child. I There is a new vampire film in the works based on Richelle Mead’s Times best-selling

With an all-star ensemble cast, Takers is a film for everybody. Action, romance, drama and suspense fill the screen in this thriller about a group of professional bank robbers who specialise in spectacular robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leave no evidence and lay low between jobs, leaving them uncatchable and baffling police. When a recently paroled cohort asked them to do one last job that will give them more money than they ever imagined, they cant see the downside until they are pitted against a detective who interrupts their heist hell-bent on solving their crimes. Leading the team of robbers is IDRIS ELBA with a crew of PAUL WALKER, HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN, CHRIS BROWN and MICHAEL EALY, and cops MATT DILLON and JAY HERNANDEZ. T.I. plays the recent parolee and ZOE SALDANA stars as a girlfriend of one of the crew.

INK reportedly had a run in with customs at an Austrian airport ahead of her concert in Linz as she was confronted by a difficult member of staff – she later Tweeted that being angry was obviously a prerequisite to getting a job as a customs man. Let’s hope she has more luck at other airports as she continues her Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour of Europe. Last month saw AMY WINEHOUSE take to the stage again to perform Valerie with MARK RONSON’s new band at the 100 club in London – RONSON was there playing some tunes from his album Version. The pair have recently collaborated on a song for the QUINCY JONES tribute album and there are rumours of AMY releasing an album by the end of the year. THE WHO are planning a tour for 2011 and lead man ROGER DALTREY says they want to incorporate parts of their 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia into the tour. Former X Factor contestant DIANA VICKERS says fame can sometimes be a bit of a pain and doesn’t like details of her private life revealed because she is “trying to grow up” in the spotlight. Perhaps she needs to realise that unless she sucks it up and embraces the spotlight she may be a one hit wonder!

Music notes JESSICA WHITE BRINGS US UP TO DATE WITH LATEST CD RELEASES, CONCERTS AND ROCK SNIPPETS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Following the success of their recent sold out UK tour and the

Glastonbury performance the SCISSOR SISTERS have announced an arena tour for December 2010 with live performances of songs from their latest album Night Work. RICHARD ASHCROFT, the former VERVE frontman, says that the OASIS break up will give brothers LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER a new lease of life but adds he will not collaborate with either brother as he is dismayed by how many duets there are in the charts at the moment. Note to BEYONCE – always look before opening the car door. The singer was involved in a near-miss crash in London last month – as she opened her car door, having parked outside Harrods for a spot of shopping, a taxi collided with the door and ripped it from its hinges, narrowly missing “Mrs JAY-Z”. After mentioning last month that SEAN COOMBS (aka P.DIDDY) was writing a song for the nuptials between KATY PERRY and RUSSELL BRAND it seems he may be a little late. Ms

PERRY has been promoting her album in London for the last month or so and has twice slipped up and called BRAND her husband. On GRAHAM NORTON’s show she sparked rumours when she said, “Life’s never dull with him – that’s why I married him”, but when questioned about it she quickly reverted to, “That’s why I’m marrying him.” She also appeared on JAMES CORDEN’s World Cup Live talking about wifely duties that she carries out for RUSSELL. Although they refuse to clarify to the world’s press whether or not they were secretly married, perhaps someone should mention to DIDDY that the wedding has already secretly happened and he may as well scrap the song? AMY MACDONALD, whose album This is the Life made her one of the world’s most successful British female singersongwriters, released a new album entitled A Curious Thing in March and is now planning a full UK tour in October. USHER is releasing an extension of his latest hit album Raymond v. Raymond on 24 August which will be entitled Versus and will feature eight new tracks including the PITBULL collaboration DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love. LINKIN PARK announced their upcoming A Thousand Suns will be released on 13 September. The follow up to 2007’s hit Minutes to Midnight sees the first single The Catalyst out on 2 August. SNOOP DOG has revealed he is a massive Coronation Street fan and wants a cameo on the British show. The rapper told fans he had been watching the show for 11 years and had even asked his agent if he could make an appearance on the cobbled streets of fictional Weatherfield. Last month was not a good month for SCARY SPICE (aka MEL B) – she and her husband were accused of beating up a real estate appraiser after mistaking him for a paparazzi photographer. According to a website report the man is demanding over $1.4 million from the couple after he was left with a broken hand, neck and back injuries. STING (real name GORDON SUMNER) has ruled out doing another reunion tour with THE POLICE after claiming their 30th anniversary tour, which took place in 2007 and 2008, was uninspiring, had no new energy and was not easy.

Five new CD releases

one KATY PERRY – Teenage Dream The third studio album from the pop star features the hit single California Gurls, which is fast becoming this summer’s top tune, as well as bonus tracks on the limited edition including If We Ever Meet Again with TIMBALAND and Starstrukk with 3OH!3. Ms PERRY has described the album as fun and roller-skating and ‘90s, so it’s sure to be a great album for the hot season.

two CHICANE – Giants Giants, the fourth album from CHICANE, features the hits Poppiholla, Hiding All The Stars, Come Back and the newest single Middledistancerunner, which has already gone to the top 10 in the club charts, much like Poppiholla did for three weeks. CHICANE has enjoyed great success with albums in the past, his Greatest Hits already being certified gold.

three THE HOOSIERS – The Illusion Of Safety The English-Swedish pop rock band release their second

album this month on the 16th, with the first single Choices preceding it on the 2nd. Described as a little bit pop, disco, rock, dance and a whole lot of fun, the album is sure to be a hit with fans worldwide.

four THE SATURDAYS – Headlines Described by SATURDAYS member Una Healy as a mini album, it will feature their headline song Missing You and five other new singles as well as previous singles Ego, Forever Is Over and a remix of One Shot. The video for Missing You was shot here on the Coast.

five FANTASIA – Back To Me Her first album in four years since the 2006 smash hit FANTASIA, Back To Me features 12 new tunes by the American singer, who won American Idol in season three – with judges calling her the best contestant to have ever competed in any competition.

Concerts on the Coast this month Buddha Beach August 6-8 – Buddha Beach presents the music of the Gipsy Kings, featuring Manolo and Lito, the Gipsys from Marseille. August 21 – Gwen Dickey, the legendary voice of ‘70s soul sensation Rose Royce, performs her biggest hits including Car Wash, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore and Wishing on a Star for one night only. Puente Romano (tennis club) August 6 – Kool and the Gang

perform their classic soul and disco hits. Nueva Andalucía Bullring August 20 – Alexandra Burke, Diversity and Jamie Archer will be performing at the bullring on the 20th, with girl band The Scarletz introduced as their supporting act. Marbella Bullring August 18 – Bjorn Again perform a summer spectacular concert with all the hits of Abba and Mamma Mia! – with X Factor finalist Ruth Lorenzo also performing a full set on the night.

ou’ve come a long way since performing with Beyonce in the final of the X-Factor and going on to win the competition nearly two years ago. Tell us… what have you been doing since then? A lot has happened since I won the show. It has been the best

experience of my life so far. I have an album that I am very proud of that I call “My Baby”. I’ve still been in the recording studio making the re-package of this album, Overcome. I’ve also been promoting in Europe and Australia, which has been out of this world. I can’t wait to start promotion in Asia and America.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT What do you have planned for the rest of the year? I currently have a new single that I am now promoting in the UK called Start Without You, and that is released 23 August. I am really excited about that song because it’s the first song released off of the re-packaged album, which is out in the autumn. X -Factor auditions are being carried out as we speak… what do you think the public are looking for this year in their X-Factor finalists? They're looking for someone or a group to just be original and fun! We always like to see talent, but most of all seeing the contestants having fun is so important. Tell us about Simon Cowell… what was it like working with him? Simon is great, a good friend and a great boss. He is a very talented person who has a great ear for music. But, most of all, he really understands me, which is more important then anything.

You seem to have plenty of dates lined up this summer, performing around the UK. How do you find being away from home and travelling so much and how do you stay grounded? I love to perform. For me that is the time where I lose myself and become something or even someone else. It is the most magical feeling ever! Being away from home is hard, but I have a great supportive family who sometimes travel with me and keep me company. Also, my little dog Alfie keeps me company; he is amazing and so loving! I don’t expect it has always run smoothly for you… did you have many ups and downs? You will always have ups and downs in life. But that is a part of life and it is how you learn and become stronger. I am really happy to say that I have had more ups then downs. I guess the biggest down is being away from my loved ones. But I always give thanks to things such as Skype, emails and mobile phones. They help with communication a lot. How was it for you performing with Beyonce? Do you think you’ll maybe sing with her in the future or release a collaboration with her? It was the most surreal moment of my life when I performed with Beyonce. She is such an inspiration to me that I had to keep pinching myself. I have learned so much from her. I pray that one day I will be able to work with her again. That would be a dream come true. 26

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Have you always wanted to be a singer and when did you decide to pursue this career? I have always wanted to be a singer, since the age of five years old. I literally live, eat and breathe music. You must have had music icons when you were younger… who were your musical influences and who did you look up to or aspire to be like? I have always loved Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Al Green, Aaliyah, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin…that is just to name a few. I love Motown music so most of my inspirations have come from that time in music. As well as singing with Beyonce you’ve also released singles with Flo-Rida and Pitbull and, earlier this year, you sang in the Helping Haiti Everybody Hurts single. How was it working with such big names in the industry? Being a part of the Haiti single was a huge deal; it really was for a good cause and it was amazing to see all these people coming together to help. Working with Flo Rida and Pitbull was also incredible. Flo Rida, is a big teddy bear, the sweetest guy you will meet! Do you still keep in touch with the X-Factor lot? We know you were all close at the time but do you still see them a lot? Unfortunately we don’t get to see each other often, but we do keep in touch. It is so hard to see everyone as everyone is so busy. But when we do see each other we make sure we have a blast.

How is it working with artists and producers in the US… is it strange working for a different type of market and demand for music? Not really, not strange, but defiantly scary! I am always nervous meeting new people and singing for them when I am in the studio. But once I relax I just get on with it… and then the magic can begin.

‘‘

I love to perform. For me that is the time where I lose myself and become something or even someone else

’’

We’ve noticed you have a very up-to-date style and are always wearing a great mixture of high street and high-end fashion. Is fashion important to you? I love fashion! I actually started my own clothing line before the X Factor but never got to finish it. I am hoping that one day soon I can continue that dream. I love mixing high street with high-end fashion. I love Topshop, Dolce and Gabbana, Stella McCartney, H&M... the list could go on. How is your relationship with your old mentor, Cheryl Cole? We still have a great relationship. She is such a good friend to me and someone who really supports me dearly. It was such a shame when England got kicked out of the World Cup – are you a big sports fan? Who were you rooting for after England were sent home? It was a shame. And yes, I love football. I was actually rooting for Spain when England went out, and luckily they won!

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT I Alexandra’s new single, Start Without You, is out on iTunes from 22 August and in all stores from 23 August.

How do you feel about playing in Marbella? I can't wait to perform in Marbella. I am going to make sure I give you all great energy and hopefully make you all smile. Boyzone are such lovely people so I can't wait to catch up with them again. What would people be surprised to find out about you? Well, it sounds crazy but I have over 100 teddy bears in my bedroom and they all have names. Ha ha! I love teddy bears. That is the way to my heart. Tell us a story about you? When I was nine years old and performed for the first time in front of a crowd I fell flat on my face and was super embarrassed. Ha ha! But I still got back up and carried on singing. I am the craziest person you may ever meet. I am always hyper. I She will be performing at the Nueva AndalucĂa Bullring on 20 August, with Boyzone also performing their hits and The Scarletz as their supporting act. Ticket information: ????? 28

Kristina Szekely’s DIARY

E

arlier this year I noted that, if we had a good Easter, we could look forward to an even better summer. And I am happy to report that it has exceeded our expectations! There is a real buzz in Marbella. We had visitors from Abu Dhabi and Qatar and they created quite a lot of excitement around Puerto Banús last month, with their Bentleys and other luxury sports cars. The Port is back to like it was before. They’ve cleaned it up and it’s at a very high level again, with the boutiques busy and people queuing up for restaurants. Usually at this time of the year I go to Ibiza, but it’s just as exciting here and I don’t need to go anywhere else. I have excitement right on my doorstep! The boating in the Balearics might be better but the season is short and not everyone enjoys boating or has a boat. Here you can find everything you want and need. It has the pluses of a big city without such hassles as congested traffic, etc. The main holiday time for Spaniards starts on 1 August, so Marbella will still be very active this month. And the gala season continues apace. Last month I handed over the presidential chains of Marbella Rotary to Antonio Soto and, since

52

REAL ESTATE IMPRESARIO, INDEFATIGABLE PARTY-GOER, PATRON OF THE ARTS, GENEROUS CHARITY SUPPORTER… KRISTINA SZEKELY IS THE QUEEN OF MARBELLA SOCIETY his profession is wholesale seller of wines and champagne, we celebrated in style with champagne and the finest pata negra jamón serrano at Rotary’s traditional summer gala at La Concepción. Concordia held their gala at the end of the month (as the magazine was going to press); and on 4 August I look forward to welcoming my friends to a special Spanish Heart Foundation gala and homage in my honour at Olivia Valere’s. Then, of course – as I mentioned last issue – Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria (accompanied by their respective spouses, basketballer Tony Parker and Melanie Griffith) will be the co-hosts of the 1st Starlite Gala, at Villa Padierna on 7 August, a star-studded evening whose main purpose is to raise funds for underprivileged children around the world. As for business, I think the market has hit rock bottom – and that’s obviously good news. Clients have been resisting pressure to drop their prices, and are taking properties off the market because they believe

www.societylivingmagazine.com

prices will increase, so this is also a good sign. There is a higher quality of buyers around now, not so much investors but people who want to live here. Some have bought timeshare before, like what they see, and now want to make their stay more permanent. It’s like the rediscovery of beautiful Marbella! Before it was more or less onethird British, one-third Spanish and one-third the rest; now it’s very mixed, and not just defined by nationality. That’s what people like so much about Marbella, that it is international, cosmopolitan and great fun. They are coming here from Miami and Los Angeles and the south of France, which says a lot. They might still have their holidays in St Tropez and Ibiza but their main holiday time is spent in Marbella. Poland’s economy is improving and the British are starting to come back because the pound is up from a year ago. In fact we have been offered properties in Poland as well as Morocco and on the Pacific coast. I don’t go away on business as much as before, as I’m focusing

on our business on the Coast and in Madrid, but I’m always happy to boost our international profile and portfolio with these properties. Our Gibraltar office is starting to pick up, and Sotogrande is looking very good. This is the main season in Sotogrande and it really is a lovely place when all the ultra-exclusive home-owners are in town. It’s a lively atmosphere everywhere with polo, golf and boating the main sports. A generous Spanish villa owner has instructed us to sell his property down the coast and 100 per cent will go to a charitable cause! In Marbella, the town hall is doing a good job promoting the area. The PGOU has been approved, and buildings that had question marks hanging over them have now been “normalised”. A lot of people are seeking bargains and we do get some bank repossessions which are excellent value. But people want the best house in the best area, for half the price, and this just isn’t the case, normally. We have to be realistic. Credit is also available, though it varies from bank to bank. One bank is offering 60 to 70 per cent, for example; while another will provide credit as quickly as 24 hours if you agree to deposit your own assets, the equivalent of one-third of the loan amount. As always, the nicest part of my job is meeting people, and I have a lot of opportunities for that as, during summer, I tend to work from our Puerto Banús office until late in the evening, up to midnight sometimes. I love summer time. Mind you, I love it here all the time! I’m very enthusiastic about Marbella. As the town hall notes in its new slogan, “Marbella avanza” – “Marbella is moving forward”. Have a great August!

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST

Regal milestone

Great expectations

THE GHOST IS NOT ONLY A COMPLETELY NEW ROLLS-ROYCE: IT IS, AS MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTOJOURNALIST IAN KUAH DISCOVERS, ALSO A COMPLETELY NEW KIND OF ROLLS-ROYCE

Faster, more compact and less costly than the Phantom, the Ghost places the world’s most distinguished car marque in front of a whole new audience. I sat in a prototype Ghost in November 2008, and was immediately enthusiastic about the car’s appearance, both inside and out. Whilst a smaller and less imposing car than the Phantom, it still effectively conveys the regal presence and deportment expected of the marque.

C

ontemporary Rolls-Royce styling cues like the rear-hinged coach doors for easy access, and the possibility of a stainlesssteel-look finish for the bonnet and A-pillars, make the link to the new house style started by the Phantom. On the all-steel-monocoque construction of the Ghost, however, the latter is achieved with paint rather than material. Rolls-Royce chief designer Ian Cameron has created a styling milestone with the Ghost. In a quest to make their new “small” car appear less monumental, for the first time ever, the hallmark Greek Temple radiator grille has been sunk into the bodywork rather than standing proud. With softer, rounder lines emanating from this lower front, the net effect is a significant toning down of the traditionally imposing Rolls-Royce visage. In isolation, the Ghost presents a more approachable face to the masses, and you only have to see it alongside its bigger brother to really appreciate how it moves the 21st century perception of the Rolls-Royce ethos forward. Where the Phantom is pure Rolls-Royce, with almost every component barring the basic BMW derived V12 engine bespoke, the Ghost shares over 20 per cent of its underpinnings with the latest BMW 7-Series. As the F01 7-Series is a fine car this is not a problem, and that is a far smaller percentage than the VW Phaeton content used in the making of the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur.

58

www.societylivingmagazine.com

“With softer, rounder lines emanating from a lower front, the net effect is a significant toning down of the traditionally imposing Rolls-Royce visage” One of the things I immediately liked about the Ghost at first contact was its driving position. Where you sit “on” the Phantom looking down its long prow, as you do with Rolls-Royces past, you sit “in” the Ghost as you would in a BMW 7-Series or Mercedes S-Class. This makes the new “small” Rolls-Royce more of a driver’s car than the Phantom, and immediately had me looking forward to time behind the wheel rather than in the back seat. The cabin design has strong links to the Phantom’s in terms of iconic elements like the thin-rimmed, chrome and leathertrimmed steering wheel, heavy chromed eyeball air vents and column stalk-operated gearshifter.

Beyond that, the effect is quite different, and in keeping with the Ghost’s more modern and dynamic mission. The flat-bottomed white-faced dials and the matching clock on the dashboard with its chrome surround are quite unique. The power reserve indicator, carried over from the Phantom, is a glorious but quite useless replacement for a tachometer. A simplified interpretation of BMW’s iDrive system ensures that the dashboard and console remain uncluttered, with many of the functions “hidden” until they are required. In an era gone-by, Rolls-Royce used to refrain from the vulgar revelation of their car’s engine horsepower, merely stating that it was “adequate”. The Ghost’s stated 563bhp output is quite clearly more than adequate. In the world of normal cars, it is an unwritten rule that a lesser model should never be faster or more powerful than the range flagship. But a Rolls-Royce is not a normal car, and the company is very clear that the Ghost was designed to appeal to a completely different kind of buyer than its bigger brother. Aimed at the younger and more sporting person who finds the Phantom too large, too staid and perhaps too much of a statement, the Ghost is a car most of its owners can actually use everyday. Even in the US where big cars are the norm, the Phantom stands out. But here the Ghost is able to blend into the traffic quite well while still

ON THE ROAD

being instantly recognisable as a Rolls-Royce. After my briefing from Ian Cameron, I approached my first drive with anticipation but an open mind. And, during my time with the new Rolls-Royce, I discovered a dichotomy in its character, which I will return to later. The naturally aspirated 6,749cc V12 motor that powers the Phantom develops 453bhp at 5,350rpm and 720Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, so this 2.7 tonne car is not exactly lacking in the

performance department. Waftability is there by the bucket load, and this big car can really hitch up its skirts and fly should its driver decide to get a move on. However, I was only partly prepared for the awesome straight-line grunt of the 190kg lighter but even more powerful Ghost. Its twinturbocharged 6,592cc version of the latest BMW V12 motor delivers 563bhp at 5,250rpm with 780Nm of torque at just 1,500rpm, the kind of

numbers that you normally see attached to a major league supercar. Step off is smooth and measured and, thanks to a very progressive throttle, can be metered in as gently or as brutally as required. When your right foot is pushing the throttle pedal right into the deep carpet, the tidal wave of torque just keeps on coming, thrusting this big car to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds. This is a whole second faster w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

than the Phantom, and the electronically limited 250km/h top speed comes up very rapidly indeed. Unleashed from its electronic governor, the Ghost would likely be capable of 320km/h, but it would then require special rubber, as the stresses imposed on its tyres at such speeds are immense. The 6.6 litre motor has enough sheer displacement to provide good torque offboost but, the way BMW engineers have calibrated things, the turbos start to boost just off idle. Even as you are barely underway on a light throttle, a great big wave of torque is already turning the rear tyres via the supersmooth eight-speed ZF automatic. Considering it actually weighs some 6.0kg less than the its six-speed predecessor, the new ZF eight-speed gearbox is something of an engineering tour de force. 60

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Where the previous generation six-speed gearbox as used in the Phantom has three clutches open at any one time, the new gearbox has just two. While there is still a torque converter to smooth things out at low crankshaft speeds, the drive is fully locked up from 3,000rpm, which means no slip, no power loss and better fuel economy. As it was developed specifically to partner the new generation V12 biturbo engine, it is no surprise that the eight-speeder handles its immense power and torque with aplomb. With peak torque arriving at just 1,500rpm, the need to drop a gear or two seldom arises. And, if it does, the eight-speed gearbox only needs to slip down one ratio where rival systems would have to go down two for the same effect, so the engine is always working at or close to its peak torque. While this makes for maximum thrust on tap at all times, the counterpoint is extreme

smoothness. Even when you are using the throttle travel to its fullest extent, the gearbox still shifts ratios seamlessly as the twin-turbo motor pushes the Ghost firmly towards the horizon. I never ceased to be impressed by the instant and relentless thrust I experienced when accelerating away in a high gear. Torque is indeed the key, while the modest 0.33 drag coefficient helps as well. Only the gentle rush of wind past the big door mirrors disturbs the virtual silence at cruise. The effortless and near silent manner in which the Ghost gathers speed, and the relative agility of its chassis can encourage you to drive it more sportingly than the Phantom. Although it has impressive handling for its size and weight, the Phantom, even in its more sporting Coupe version, never really feels like it wants to play sportscar on a winding road. The Ghost, by comparison, can be wielded like a much lighter car, abilities derived from its

ON THE ROAD

A blossoming traditional rivalry It is now 12 years since the first rumblings of a parting of the ways between Rolls-Royce and Bentley were heard, and just over seven years since the genie left the bottle. The union of Bentley and Rolls Royce, which began in 1931 when W O Bentley’s company ran into financial difficulties, officially ended on 1 January 2003. On that day, Rolls Royce Motor Cars became 100 per cent the property of BMW, with Bentley continuing under the stewardship of Volkswagen. While the sale of these two great British institutions to the Germans came as a shock to the system, true aficionados of both marques were happy to see Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars split up and go their separate ways. There is no question that the shared platform and bodyshell situation that existed for years diluted both marques. After being released from their former straitjacket, the subsequent blossoming of both clearly shows just how different and unique they really are.

lower weight and centre of gravity as well as the confidence its lower driving position confers. It is, however, a car that rewards smooth inputs, and driven in this manner you can cover ground rapidly with deceptive ease. The double wishbone suspension uses air springs and active anti-roll bars. Unlike many luxury cars today, it has just one well-judged setting. As with all such systems, the ride height can be raised at a touch of a button for clearing steep ramps. In combination with the modest 8.5J x 19inch wheels, shod with 255/50R19 Goodyear EMT Runflat tyres, this produces a cosseting ride, not far removed from the magic carpet experience provided by the Phantom. However, my test car was fitted with the more handling biased 20-inch wheel/tyre option that uses 8.5J and 9.5J x 20-inch wheels with 255/45R20 and 285/40R20 Goodyears. Apart from giving the Ghost a more

purposeful stance, the 20-inch footwear enhances handling, grip and steering feel, only impacting slightly on the ride quality at low speeds over badly broken roads. At high speeds, the extra grip and stability this combination adds to the car’s composure make it a more than acceptable trade-off for the keen driver. As on the Phantom, a neat touch is the balanced wheel centre caps whose design ensures that the “RR” logo always remains upright whether the car is at rest or moving. Seeing the Ghost moving down the road with these logos stationary only underlines the impression that this stately machine is gliding rather than driving along. Compared to its bigger brother, the Ghost still feels special, but not quite as special. The Phantom simply has a je nais se quoi that is totally unassailable by any other luxury car at any price. It is the ne plus ultra, bar none.

And so to the dichotomy I mentioned earlier. When Rolls-Royce and Bentley went their separate ways, Rolls-Royce set out to create the best limousine in the world, while Bentley went the sporting way that was in its original genetic make-up. The distinct on-demand sporting streak lurking under the super composed surface of the Ghost puts it on a collision course with the new Bentley Mulsanne, whose list price is pegged between the two Rolls-Royce models. As limousines with a sporting bone in their bodies, the end result is closer than you would think. In the real world, where the Rolls-Royce Phantom would not appear on the radar of a potential Mulsanne customer, the Ghost certainly will. Now that the two cars look completely different inside and out, someone who cannot come to a firm decision either way might well end up buying both. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

OCEAN CLINIC “Beyond beauty”… in a calm and relaxing ambience

M

r Kai O. Kaye opened the Ocean Clinic two years ago and has seen great success since its launch. Named the Ocean Clinic for its proximity to the sea and how Dr Kaye feels about living in Marbella, the name is also a reflection of how he wants his patients to feel when in the clinic – as calm and relaxing as the sea, with its modern, clean lines and tranquil feel. Working all across Europe has given Dr Kaye a wealth of experience so when the opportunity came to relocate and work in Marbella five years ago he jumped at the chance, and opened his own clinic in Marbella’s

84

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Avenida Ramon y Cajal when the ideal premises became available. Dr Kaye says that Marbella is the perfect place to do what he does: the aesthetic surgery is comparable to that offered in a major city, while the lifestyle is similar to a small city. The clinic itself has full certification for minor surgery, which includes eyelifts and scar correction operations; while he uses the USP hospital for the more major operations. His surgical range includes rejuvenation procedures that are surgeries to turn back the clock; aesthetic procedures, which include liposuction, rhinoplasty and breast enlargement and augmentation; and surgeries that include those for burn and accident victims. This is why Dr Kaye enjoys his work in Marbella so much – it is not only full of variety but is also very rewarding. Dr Kaye also works very closely with every one of his patients from their very first visit to post-operative care, a year after the procedure was carried out. He likes to see, treat and operate on all patients himself so he knows exactly what it is they want and how they want the end result to look. Dr Kaye believes

that every patient deserves the best so he insists on the personal touch. The motto at Ocean Clinic is “beyond beauty”, meaning that you can always be more than what nature provides you with – and Dr Kaye’s favourite treatment is facial surgery. He developed new techniques for facial surgery and likes it because it is so interesting and different. There is much more to work with as he has to think about the eyes, nose and mouth; and it is always the first thing people see when they look at a person, so he enjoys helping people make that impression a memorable one.

Reflections Hair Nails and Skin Care have introduced a revolutionary new treatment at the salon – the keratin-based hair treatment from Brazil. The Global Keratin treatment enables clients to have healthy, shiny, smooth hair all the time and the results last for two to three months. Keratin is naturally produced in the skin, hair and nails and gives hair the ability to return to its original healthy state. The treatment can be used on all types of hair – virgin, coloured, bleached, highlighted, permed or relaxed – and the application process takes between 90 minutes and three hours to apply. Once it is applied it is sealed with a hot iron, which seals the moisture, hydrates the hair and creates a glossy finish. In addition, Reflections stock the Global Keratin balancing shampoo and conditioner, which are sulphate-free. Also available from Reflections is the new limited edition ghd Colour Collection, which comes in five great colours that each represent a feeling or emotion. Black, blue, green, red and purple are the colours that can give you glossy straight locks or beautiful flowing curls this summer; all you need to do is choose you colour. In laser fat removal, laser light at a determined and specific pulse breaks the fat cells and liquifies the fat. The laser also causes the deeper layers of the skin, the socalled dermis, to retract evenly.

Q Are there any scars involved in laser fat removal? A No, there are no scars. Q What is the difference between laser lipolysis and laser liposuction? A The quantity of fat treated, which under some circumstances makes it recommendable to combine laser with liposuction. Q How long does the laser fat removal take? A Laser lipolysis for limited fat deposits is

FINCA CORTESÍN

Culinary genius in a stunning setting WORDS JESSICA WHITE

PHOTOS DAVID TOMS

S

ociety Living readers who love fine dining will have been following our regular reviews of the Schilo restaurant at Finca Cortesín and may also have visited the restaurant – which serves such exceptional gastronomic delights. So, when we were invited to bring guests once again last month, every member of the team was suddenly available that evening should they be asked to go. Luckily for me, I was able to attend and couldn’t wait to taste the work of head chef and culinary genius Schilo Van Coevorden. Our guests for the evening were Pablo and Maria Alberca from Puro Beach, John Small, Leandro Gimenez-Vega and Connie from Small World and Tribeca; and, representing Society

Living, publisher Andy Clark and advertising executive Emma Landberg, while photographer David Toms captured the occasion. On arrival at the stunning hotel we were met by general manager Rene Zimmer, who invited us for drinks on the terrace before dinner – where we enjoyed strawberry mojitos and champagne, the perfect start to the evening. Rene told us about the different restaurants at the hotel, which include Schilo; a traditional Spanish restaurant; Don Giovanni, an Italian establishment; and the golf club restaurant. Complete with a spa that is exclusive to guests and members, the hotel really takes you away from life on the Coast and enables you to escape, whether you are there for a week or simply a few hours. 94

www.societylivingmagazine.com

GOURMET CLUB

After a tour of the hotel for those who had not visited before, we moved to the restaurant where Schilo was preparing our 10-course “degustación” menu. The summer menu is lighter and fresher, with local ingredients used to create sumptuous dishes – many of the ingredients are also grown at the hotel, including white strawberries and black cherries. Schilo has used less sauce on dishes for the summer and there are hints of Arabic touches within the menu. His creation process, he says, is ongoing and he is well assisted by his right-hand man David Willcocks and the rest of his team. Schilo’s theme at the moment is landscaping, something we would realise as our meal progressed. We began with canapés, which included spicy wasabi peas, accompanied by a Yuzu aperitif – homemade beer, yuzu, mandarin and whisky – which was followed by duck spring roll with plum sauce. The wine presented with the first few courses was Belongrade y Lurton 2008, a light Rueda that everyone agreed accompanied the dishes perfectly. Yoghurt mousse, beetroot ice cream and Rio Frio caviar was next, then tartar of tuna belly “El Jardín” – where Schilo’s landscaping theme was

executed with small colourful flowers and sprouts alongside tuna topped with green apple snow, fly fish eggs with both yuzu and wasabi, avocado, baby cucumber and tomato jelly. Following the wild carrots with black miso was a lobster cappuccino, devoured quickly by all at the table, who agreed it was absolutely delicious – even those who were not lobster lovers. Never having tasted sweetbreads, I was very pleasantly surprised by the veal sweetbreads “Gado Gado” and would recommend this dish to anyone visiting the restaurant. The final savoury dish was one I have wanted to taste since other members of Society sampled it on their visits – the barbecue Wagyu beef with Japanese mushrooms melted in the mouth and can only be described as beautiful. Two cleverly created desserts were to follow and were in keeping with Schilo’s landscaping dishes: “Casares by Day” and “Casares by Night”. The fabulously designed desserts showed Schilo’s view of Casares on the plate – “Day” included mango, strawberry and green tea, while “Night” was a chocolate masterpiece. After dinner we retired to the bar and lounge to savour the wonderful moments from

our evening. While each guest had a favourite dish, we all concurred it was a fantastic meal. Throughout August guests can dine at Schilo on the terrace, and the restaurant is also open on Sundays.

FINE DINING NERMAN’S RESTAURANT

The whole personal experience WORDS JESSICA WHITE PHOTOS RUTH JONES

J

oakim and Jennifer Nerman opened Nerman’s restaurant earlier this year to create a place where customers could go for personal service, great food and value for money – and they have certainly delivered. Diners get the whole experience when visiting the restaurant, from Joakim personally greeting all the guests as they enter to walking them out when they leave – and everything in between. The contemporary restaurant is decorated with the signature colours of fuscia pink, purple and black while the walls are adorned with art that inspires emotion – which are painted by Joakim’s friend Alejandro Hermann. With indoor and outdoor dining the restaurant is perfect all year round, with a cosy atmosphere inside and a quaint terrace area outside. What has been created is a restaurant where diners feel comfortable and relaxed, enjoying traditional cooking with a few twists. The menu is internationally inspired and is very creative, offering half portions of most dishes for diners who aren’t as hungry as others or perhaps have a smaller appetite – ultimately giving guests exactly what they want as they can choose the quantity. Luckily we were able to visit the restaurant for dinner and we invited to sample a Nerman’s mojito – which is made with pear and cinnamon and is absolutely to die for and very more-ish. As we took our time looking at the menu I was able to have a peek at what other diners were ordering and my mouth was

watering just watching the dishes come out of the kitchen. As there were four of us we decided to share starters so we could try a little of everything and eagerly awaited the arrival of mixed salad with sautéed wild mushrooms, sautéed goat’s cheese and a balsamic dressing; a dish of curry herring, mustard herring, onion herring with marinated salmon, skargaard prawns and Scandinavian cheese; fois gras with seasonal fruit marmalade and brioche; and gambas pil pil – none of which disappointed and they were all delicious. For the main course I had decided what to have the minute I saw someone else’s order arrive at their table – barbecued ribs with the chef’s family recipe for the sauce, served with chips which were tender and succulent – Joakim insisted they should be served with a beer and a shot of Jack Daniels, which also were the perfect accompaniment. My fellow diners decided on ox cheek in a red wine sauce with potato and horseradish mash and patron peppers; oven baked cod on lukewarm potato, onion and herb salad accompanied by sweet tomato marmalade and green asparagus sauce; and confit of duck with sautéed pak choi and wild mushrooms accompanied by soy barbecue sauce and wasabi crunch. Between the four of us we shared two desserts: white chocolate and mango

ne of the top beach clubs on the Coast, Ocean Club is a firm favourite of both residents and visitors who want a day of relaxation, good food and a great party atmosphere. The beach club, for those who may have not visited, is situated on the beach in Puerto Banús and includes a large dining area and swimming pool in the centre, with crisp white beds surrounding this area to enable guests to enjoy the best of both worlds when going to the beach. During the week the beach club remains cool and relaxed with tunes played out by the resident DJs but on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the party atmosphere is turned up a notch and you can enjoy the amazing sounds of the Brazilian drummers and their equally outstanding dancers who congo around the pool, creating that all-important party mood for guests. Luckily we were able to visit the club on a Friday so we enjoyed some great cuisine then moved to the bar to watch the amazing dancers and drummers – really impressive and exciting to watch.

The kitchen, run by head chef Stephane Bruylant, who has worked all over Spain and has extensive experience with fine dining, creates some fabulous dishes that make the mouth water just reading the menu. These include many different fish dishes such as salmon, Alaskan king crab, cod and sole; salads including the original chicken Caesar and Maine lobster salad with Xeres vinegar dressing; and sharing platters such as the Ocean sushi mix, the Royal seafood platter, chateaubriand and sea bass “gros sel” baked in a crust of salt. There were three of us dining so we decided to share starters as we couldn’t decide on one each and wanted to sample as much as possible from the delectable menu. The sushi menu is also extensive and after much deliberation we settled on California roll sushi with crab meat, cucumber, avocado and flying fish roe to accompany the tempura prawns with sweet and sour sauce and the Japanesescented Vietnamese nems wrapped in lettuce and mint leaves.

To accompany the meal we chose drinks from the cocktail list and had three variations of mojitos: classic mint; raspberry; and elderflower – all of which were delicious. The main courses were equally as sumptuous as our starters and, having decided not to share, we each chose something different. The OC burger with caramelised onions, cheddar cheese, salad garnish and hand-cut French fries and the Asian chicken satay served with basmati rice, vegetable mix and fresh coriander sauce were savoured by my dining companions. My choice was the truffle-perfumed fillet of sea bass “in papillotte”, which was cooked to perfection – and I have to say probably the best fish I have ever tasted. After two fabulous courses we thought perhaps it was best to share a dessert and one that would cleanse the palette, so we enjoyed the assortment of sorbets with fresh fruits served in a flower cookie – an excellent choice for dining beside the beach and the perfect end to a great meal.

ROUND-UP OF BUSINESS, CHARITY, CULTURAL AND OTHER GENERAL NEWS FROM THE COSTA DEL SOL AND ELSEWHERE IN SPAIN

REMEMBERING PHILIP BURROWS His many friends on the Coast were deeply saddened last month when Philip Burrows died after stoically battling illness. A long-time resident of the Coast with his wife Wendy and family, Philip was remembered in the way he would have particularly appreciated: with a special and moving informal ceremony in a natural place of beauty, the mountains where he enjoyed so many enjoyable and pleasurable experiences walking with his dearest friends. SNAPSHOTS As it is not always possible to cover every party, launch or general celebration we would like to in our Society pages, the Snapshots section features other events along the coast – and further afield. If you would like your special occasion featured in the magazine, send us a selection of high-resolution photos and a brief write-up about the event (maximum 50 words), by 10 August (for the September issue) to: editorial@societylivingmagazine.com

MUSIC FESTIVAL SKA AND REGGAE IN COIN A one-day Ska and Reggae Festival will be held on the outskirts of Coin to mark the pending end of summer with a “musical big band bang”. Headlined by the Costa del Sol’s Looney Toonz it will be supported by Absalut Pantz from Orgiva and Polish group Skadictator, plus others. The event will begin at 2pm on Saturday 28 August with stalls, bouncy castle, artisan stalls and food, and music kicking off around 5pm until 2am. It is being organised by a local group of music lovers in conjunction with local radio station Heartfm Spain and will be held in the function room at Venta Los Arcos on the Coin to Cartama A355 road. The idea behind the event is to promote ska and reggae music in a bid to lure hugely popular south Londonbased ska band The Dualers over to southern Spain next year. Flavours of Jamaica will be providing traditional food while Los Arcos will be hosting their barbecue platters. Tickets are ?5 in advance or ?7.50 on the door (children under 12 free) and proceeds will go to the Have a Heart charity, which works with needy people within the Heartfm 95.7 broadcast area. Tickets are available from: Pogs Irish Bar, Funky Cutz Hair Salon (behind Leslies), Heartfm studios (Alhaurin el Grande) and Los Arcos.
