A fresh, fashionable and funky start to the New Year

W

hen this latest issue of Beautiful Home first hits the streets many of us will be in full festive season mode and not thinking too much about home improvements in 2010 – other than installing a larger medicine cabinet in the bathroom to accommodate an expanded range of hangover remedies. By early January, however, perhaps inspired by New Year resolutions to dabble in a little DIY in 2010, or upgrade the kitchen or turn a semiabandoned corner of the garden into a trendy outdoor socialising area in time for spring, our thoughts once again turn to the everyday concerns of making sure our house is a true home – both comfortable and stylish. With that in mind, this issue we once again look at stunning new trends in home décor, from the sophistication of adding black and white drama and spark to living areas, through the

fascinating history of chairs and how this has influenced contemporary styles, to the convergence of fashion couture into furniture design and architecture – as epitomised in such a timelessly elegant way by Fendi Casa. Moving outside the traditional design idea sources, we also step inside 10 top boutique hotels in Spain to see how their contemporary innovations can be incorporated into home decoration. Elsewhere this issue, we review striking design concepts to give that special room a new look, as well as state-of-the-art home automation and consumer electronics; the experts answer your questions on such diverse property-related matters as fireplaces, accessories, alternatives to the ubiquitous magnolia, and even the dreaded red palm weevil; and we feature two more magnificent Costa homes: a luxurious villa offering

panoramic views over the Istan lake; and an elegantly comfortable Moroccan-Spanish styled property perfectly suited to family living. Finally, as it is the festive season – at least for those readers picking up a copy during the magazine’s first pre-Christmas distribution (outlets will be replenished throughout January and February) – we have included a special feature on table settings: from multi-functional pieces that are ideal for sharing, or “grazing style” dining, to the versatility of clean-line designs – and, for the truly adventurous, a less formal mix-and-match approach. However you choose to entertain this Christmas-New Year – and whatever plans you have to revamp your home over the next few months – we hope you find some fresh inspiration in these pages and are able to fulfil your aspirations in 2010.

STRIKING AND INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS TO GIVE YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM, OR CORNER OF THE HOME, A STUNNING AND ORIGINAL NEW LOOK COMPILED BY JESSICA WHITE

BRIGHTENING THE MOOD Spruce your home up this winter with some bright prints and stunning colours, perfect for getting rid of those winter blues. With friends, family and many guests undoubtedly visiting over the festive period you may want to change the décor of a room or simply update a room with some new curtains or cushions. This black and white lounge area is a great way to update your living space; by maintaining the flower theme through the sofa and the wallpaper you can keep accessories such as cushions to a minimum. For a more colourful living space chose one colour – for example, pink – as your main one and then add complementary colours. Cushions can be the same pattern as the curtains to maintain the main theme, but you can also add other cushions in block colours to give the room some added life. www.gancedo.com (Images from Sanderson and Gancedo – Sanderson is exclusively distributed by Gancedo in Spain.) 08

FOR THE PERFECT KITCHEN… Redesigning a kitchen is not only a massive task but also something that should be undertaken with care, consideration and a strong idea of what you want. With so many choices of kitchen available now, it’s not a case of just modern or traditional; it goes much deeper than that. Colours play a very important part in the design of your kitchen. Remember, this kitchen is a room that you probably won’t re-design for a few years, maybe even longer, so you need to choose something that is practical yet stylish and, most importantly, easy to live with. If you are a minimalist then you don’t want bright colours and lots of kitchenware on show, whereas a more traditional kitchen could have exposed brick and an island in the centre where pots and pans hang for that all important family feel. To find your perfect kitchen and receive ideas about how to make your kitchen suit you, and not the other way round, contact The Kitchen Room. www.thekitchenroom.com

black&white SIR EDWARD LUTYENS ONCE SAID, WHILE GIVING A TALK AT THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION: “BLACK IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN ALL DECORATION. I OFTEN WONDER WHY BLACK IS NOT MORE FREQUENTLY USED. IF YOU WANT GREAT DIGNITY IN DECORATION, USE BLACK. IT IS CONDUCIVE TO MAGNIFICENCE.” POLLY JACKSON ARGUES THE CASE FOR BLACK – AND WHITE

Using black

will add a focal point of colour that anchors and adds a sophisticated look to a room. Black by itself is striking but, to get real drama and spark, pair black with white. When used with splashes of colour as accents and with variations in tone and design, as well as touches of grey, the black and white approach can create truly life-long masterpieces of design. Black and white style has long been a design concept both in fashion and in interior decorating and its recent resurgence shows that it will continue to add drama and elegance with its minimalistic approach to making a statement. For some, design that features the stark contrast between black and white is both modern and classic and is increasingly popular today among decorators or designers, who incorporate its classic patterns in upholstery, wallpaper, bed linen and fabric. So, if you are considering the idea of a black and white room, decide on the style you would like to draw from before you choose fabrics and furniture for your new look. Do you want to use solely jet black and pure white to recreate the graphic Mary Quant look? Or are you inspired by the Laura Ashley look of graphic black and white florals? Another alternative is a glamorous Art Deco feel with mirrored pieces set against a black and white scheme.

Once you’ve decided on a style, create a mood board by collecting black and white fabric samples along with pictures of furniture and accessories. Spread them out on the floor or on a table and separate them into different looks. Pick out your top two fabrics, one or two favourite images of furniture and accessories, and decide which items you are most drawn to. From here you can build up on the theme, adding furniture and accessories that work together and editing as you go. Finally, it is important not to overfill the interior. Be selective and make sure you leave plenty of clear wall space as well as room between furniture – this will help to create a restful atmosphere. A good place to start is the floor. A black and white tiled floor, an elegant black marble with inlayed white marble accents or maybe black stained wood with tall white baseboards can create a solid and luxurious floor. Consider a luxurious black and white rug to create warmth and interest. Paint is not the only option for the walls of your black and white room. There is a wealth of materials that will allow you to show your personality and exquisite taste. Consider real mother of pearl tiles or one of the latest designer wallpapers or maybe a giant black

decal to dominate one wall. If you decide to paint use ivory on walls; it makes a wonderful canvas for artwork, prints and hanging sculpture. Consider hanging large pictures in black and white or artwork in a black frame, which add can add dramatic impact to an otherwise modest piece of art work. A black and white themed room always has more impact when you add in a third accent colour; yellow can be great as an accent colour and of course red, but remember to use only a little splash of your chosen colour in a cushion or a striking object such as a vase or elegant sculpture.

The sofa is the main focus of your living room, so are your only choices black, white or a black and white pattern? Surprising as it may seem, a chocolate colour leather sofa will enhance your room by notching up the colour to a warmer shade without losing your overall plan. A coffee table, or any other table, can be glass-topped with black wrought-iron legs. A black vase with white lilies or other white flower makes a striking centrepiece over the fireplace or in the middle of a table. Black 16

lacquered furniture, glass and mirrored furniture and brushed steel creates a warm and rich, yet stunning and contemporary, design that would look perfect in any area of your home. A bedroom should be conducive to restful sleep. While the contrast of black and white can be a dramatic one, these are colours that can also share a gentler interplay. White is the perfect backdrop in any bedroom, making confined spaces seem larger and bestowing a

sense of uncluttered calm. When used in isolation, white can, however, seem overly clinical, and so the careful use of black can create a contrast that adds a subtle spark to your white canvas. Choosing a theme for your black and white bedroom can add a personal hint to your space – choose the sultry feel of a Hollywood boudoir, or go for a more playful touch with polka dots or stripes. Selecting black furniture can create a grounding feeling in your bedroom; a black-framed bed can make a w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

dramatic centrepiece. Iron is a sophisticated material that creates a truly elegant bedstead – and iron candlesticks, or an iron-framed mirror, can be beautiful accenting pieces. Crisp white bed linens are perfect for the bedroom. Add a black and white striped bed skirt, pillows and a comfortable black chair. For seasonal changes, have a variety of pillows in different colors on hand. Pink, yellow or soft green works great for summer; while red, leaf green or shimmering gold or silver looks great for winter. Everything in the world is saturated with colour. The world is colour. Industrial and interior designers know that bright colours and bold images naturally draw our attention. Most designers understand colour well enough to choose palettes to create harmony in our homes. However, there is also harmony in black and white. In the words of Coco Chanel, “Black has it all; white also. Their beauty is absolute.”

HOME COMFORTS... par excellence

DESCRIBED AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HOME ON THE COSTA DEL SOL, VILLA LA MADRUGADA TAKES THE TERM “MAKING A HOUSE A HOME” AND – AS JESSICA WHITE DISCOVERS – TURNS IT INTO A REALITY

Designed in a Moorish-Spanish style, the house is traditional yet has modern touches here and there which make it an easy villa to imagine yourself living in. The dramatic entrance to the villa is through impressive glass and wrought iron doors that lead to a magnificent courtyard which is flanked by a remarkable 51 carved stone arches and stately palm trees. The arch theme is continued throughout the villa and doors leading from the courtyard take you to more imposing rooms and out to the gardens. 20

To the side is a vaulted al fresco dining area capable of seating more than 20, while extensive stone terraces overlook the beautiful mature gardens, gazebo and large pool – which ends with a Moroccan-styled pool house. Another notable feature in the gardens is the private lake, while views from the gardens stretch out across to the sea in the distance. Sitting on an estate of 31,000 square metres and situated four kilometres from the sea, between the lively atmosphere of Puerto Banús and Estepona, the villa is completely

French doors from the courtyard lead you to the drawing room: a light, spacious room that lends itself to family gatherings or parties for friends in their hundreds. A large dining room provides a fabulous and capacious entertaining space for the grand feasts that will certainly take place. The villa also comprises a breakfast room which is located close to the large traditional Moroccan-style kitchen and pantry – for those who enjoy preparing delicious cuisine – and many other seating areas are dotted around the house… great for relaxing. The accommodation in the house is more typical of what you would find in a boutique hotel, stylish yet charmingly cosy – rooms that you feel instantly at home in while still being chic enough to fit in with the rest of the house. 24

There is also a separate guest/staff wing containing two bedrooms, and a bathroom, kitchen, sitting room and patio. For those who like exercise but want to do it at home, there is a private gym ready to use at your own convenience; while a garage for three cars allows for ample parking. The latest trend in the

design world is convergence, or crossover: a blurring of the lines between runway fashion, furniture and architecture. This convergence means that the latest home furnishings collections are adopting the same decorative trends from the fashion house’s latest line and the same high-quality workmanship expected of a couture item. No one does this better than Fendi Casa. The Fendi Casa Home Collection is designed to dress up a room. As trendy as Fendi’s baguette bags and wraparound shades, this range of furniture, sofas, armchairs, poufs, chaise-longues, consoles and day-beds is interpreted with the typical Fendi style and ethos. Great attention is paid to the past while tending towards the future, with considerable concern for evolution in modern design, which is interpreted, enjoyed and shared in the spirit of today’s culture. With 25 years experience specialising in design and decoration of villas, apartments and full renovation projects, Patricia Darch is always ahead of the trends in the world of interior design. Carrying exclusive furniture and textile lines from luxury Italian companies and top Spanish designers, Fendi Casa was a perfect, natural partnership. “Fendi Casa is by far the most exciting and innovative company in the world of interior design,” explains Patricia. “I considered it a huge compliment to be approached by them to represent sales for Andalucía and Gibraltar. I chose the beautiful pieces displayed in our showroom for impact. I always feel that, if I love something enough to buy, then it should be easy to convince others to do the same. 32

“Fendi Casa

brings an element of supreme luxury and timeless elegance to the design of a home. We also have a new collection of Fendi Casa decorative items so hopefully we can bring a little Fendi Casa to everyone.” Beautiful Home were delighted to have the opportunity of interviewing Jose Forriols, the agent for Fendi Spain: When did Fendi decide to go into home furnishings? In 1989, with the idea of exploring other creative fields we collaborated with Club House Italia, a company which has been established since the 1970s and is run by D. Alberto Vignatelli. Describe Fendi Casa’s style… A contemporary style, personalising the everyday habitat with style, without forgetting the legendary “F” logo which appears on rugs, cushions, upholstery, etc. Illuminating and furnishing with a unique and personal style. Tell us about Fendi Luce… With Fendi Luce we are talking about an elegant and sophisticated design in which light is the main protagonist: a diverse range of glass lamps; Swarovski crystal; lamps such as the Icelight which conjure up the transparency of ice. How much do fashion trends influence Fendi Casa? Fendi aims to dress the home in the same way it presents fashion. Fendi is more than a decoration concept. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Personalising the everyday habitat with style, Fendi Casa home furnishings collections adopt the same decorative trends from the fashion house’s latest line and the same high-quality workmanship expected of a couture item.

What are the trends for 2010? Transferring fashion to décor, while remaining loyal to its style. Describe the new collections… A revamped classic, presenting the latest materials and maintaining a luxury finish. Which pieces are the best sellers and why? There are various, but what Fendi sells is the whole ensemble, the complete decoration of a dwelling. Southern Spain enjoys a particular al fresco lifestyle and outdoor furniture is very important. Does Fendi cater for this? In September 2009, at Maison Object Paris, Fendi presented its outdoor collection, featuring different concepts and the brand’s traditional philosophy. 34

Why should someone invest in a piece of Fendi Casa? Because buying Fendi is like buying a piece of jewellery you can show off every day, creating a feeling of wellbeing. Describe your typical client… Refined, with a special sensitivity, a perfectionist and a superb decorator. You have taken Fendi Casa into the world of luxury boats. Tell us more? Fendi has been fitting out boats for a long time now, both interior and exterior. The idea is to transfer to the sea the same luxury you enjoy at home. designer in focus By harmoniously mixing styles and influences, shapes and luxurious textures Roche Bobois has created and designed products that express a very personal sense of style. With 240 stores and four brands in nearly 40 countries, the Roche Bobois Group has reached a leading position in the interior furnishing and decoration business.

Gilles Bonnan explains how it all began…

ROCHE BOBOIS INVENTED THE SUBTLE ART OF COUNTERPOINT FOR TODAY’S INTERIORS. NICOLA MCGEORGE TALKS TO CEO GILLES BONNAN ABOUT THE ECO MOVEMENT, FUTURE TRENDS AND WORLD DOMINATION

“The company was formed in 1960, so we are going to celebrate our 50th anniversary next year. It was a family business, two families actually. The Roches and the Chouchans. The Chouchan family used to have a store called Au Beau Bois, meaning ‘the nice wood”, which was contracted into Bobois and then Roche Bobois. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Distinct styles are now blurring at the edges. Wenge is less and less appreciated by people

Future trends?

How did they go on to become so successful? At first they started importing Scandinavian furniture, which was fashionable in the ‘60s. They wanted to have exquisite furniture and found the only solution was to design their own collections. The next move was to start working with designers, and in fact they started franchising Roche Bobois without even knowing what franchising was. The Roche brothers told me that they went to Lyon and Marseilles and proposed their concept and brand name to the local furniture retailer. This was franchising. They then did the same in other countries. Now Roche Bobois has 240 stores in 40 different countries.

What did they bring to interior design that was different? First the diversity. We have three different collections: Les Provinciales, Les Voyages and Les Contemporains. The latter is very cutting edge, while Les Provinciales is a reinterpretation of the classic French style from the 18th and 19th century. The Les Voyages is a contemporary collection with inspiration from other cultures. 38

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

This diversity is a great force, teamed with the constant renewal of the collections. We have two new collections per year. I think the creativity of the brand makes us different as well. We work with a lot of designers, and stay ahead of the trends. It goes without saying the quality is outstanding. We only use the finest materials and techniques.

What has been the highlight of the brand? We have done some very big projects in different countries, hotels such as the Hilton, palaces and huge houses.

Why did Roche Bobois chose to have a showroom in Marbella? We had some demand from people in Marbella. The market and potential was here. In Marbella we have a lot of customers that come to us as we can propose a global project; we can decorate the whole house. We have created awareness of the brand locally and Marbella is one of the most important stores for us in Spain.

There is a major trend for respecting the environment, and Roche Bobois was one of the pioneers for eco conception. Another trend which is related is that people are going more and more for natural wood, with no specific treatments. It is also going to be very popular to mix styles, and with our diversity at Roche Bobois this is something that we can do, especially with big projects. People do not want a total look at home any more.

Tips For recession? Invest in durable, great quality furniture. However, people nowadays do not seem to see furniture as an investment but more as pleasure.

What trends are we moving away from? The total look; people want to mix styles. Distinct styles are now blurring at the edges. Wenge is less and less appreciated by people.

What is next for the company? We want to work more and more with talented designers. We are very ambitious for our development, especially internationally. This year (2009), which is a year of recession, we have opened 15 new stores and we will do even more next year. We have projects in Asia, China and the US. Even in Africa, we are going to open one on the Ivory Coast. Two years ago we opened in Kazakhstan. At first I was very sceptical about the potential, but the people were so convincing and really wanted Roche Bobois. The project is great.

THE NATURAL WAY “I imagined Legend as a manifesto for environmental concern” – Christophe Delcourt. Roche Bobois are very proud of their commitment to using natural resources in a sustainable way. As part of their efforts to go green they created the Legend collection, a range of eco-friendly pieces featuring the Legend bookcase. Designed by Christophe Delcourt, this is a clever new interpretation on the everyday bookshelf. With a fairytale form – think enchanted forest – its tree-like frame branches out among playfully askew shelves. This handsome limited edition piece is made from solid Bourgogne oak (from forests managed to conserve biodiversity) and is assembled without the use of hardware, glue or stains. It is finished with a water-based varnish.

Each piece is signed and numbered. The Legend collection revived the traditional cabinet-making “savoir-faire”. “We initiated the eco trend four years ago with the Legend collection,” explains Gilles. “We are very respectful of the environment and wanted to launch an eco collection. Christophe came up with his bookshelf; we then worked with our factory to conceive this eco process. Legend was a real manifesto of Roche Bobois and Christophe for the environment, and every feature of the bookshelf is eco orientated. We paid a lot of attention to the transporting of the wood from the forest to the factory. When you see the bookshelf it is incredible to believe there is no hardware in it. Little by little we are improving the respect for the environment.”

SINCE HUMANKIND FIRST STOOD UP TO SEE OVER THE TALL SAVANNAH GRASSES, WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO SIT BACK DOWN…TRISH DYNES TAKES US ON A FASCINATING JOURNEY THROUGH THE HISTORY OF CHAIRS – AND A LOOK AT HOW THEIR DESIGNERS INFLUENCED MORE CONTEMPORARY STYLES

ta

r i a a ch

When early migratory

peoples first settled into a domesticated lifestyle, the mark of a civilised person was a seat that raised the body away from the cold, damp floor. By the simple act of constructing a place to sit, humans began the long tradition of distinguishing themselves from the animal world. Until the mid-19th century, most chairs were made by hand, but the new industrialists were experimenting with modern production techniques to manufacture high quality furniture swiftly and cheaply in large quantities. Among the most successful was the Austrian manufacturer Michael Thonet, who pioneered the mass-production of bentwood furniture. His simply styled Side Chair No. 14, produced in 1870, became the first chair to be used by both aristocrats and factory workers. The 20th century saw a range of intriguing chair design influenced by various artistic movements, beginning with Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Art Deco emerged with the Machine Age, which included austerely styled but wellcrafted pieces by names such as Le Corbusier 42

and Bauhaus. Those early 20th century chairs have become admired classics and have been adapted by contemporary designers. Among the most elegant and imposing of chairs is the opulent Barcelona Chair, a Bauhaus classic modelled on an ancient stool used by Roman magistrates. Designed by Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with the interior designer Lilly Reich in 1929, it is one of the most recognisable early 20th century chairs and is still a familiar sight not only in corporate foyers but in many stylish homes. So if you think your bottom is worthy of a seat made for a king (it was designed for the Spanish royals) the Barcelona chair is for you. In the same year Le Corbusier turned the traditional club chair inside out and created a design icon. The LC3, also known as Le Grand Confort Armchair, was part of the work of a ground breaking furniture group that took the humble furniture frame out of hiding and put it on display as a component of the design.

Ray and Charles Eames are two of the most important designers of the 20th century. In the 1950s, Charles Eames set out to design a modern answer to the Edwardian English club chair as a birthday gift for his good friend, the Academy Awardwinning film director Billy Wilder. The famed designer wasn’t out to change the world. All he wanted was to make his friend a comfortable chair that had “the receptive look of a well used first baseman’s mitt”. The Eames chair is still synonymous with retro, laidback living. In 1958 Vernon Panton returned to his native Denmark, after travelling across Europe in a Volkswagen bus, full of unconventional ideas. One of Panton’s chairs was the first cantilevered chair to be made from a single piece of plastic that epitomised the optimism of the 1960s. stacked neatly on top of each other, Verner Panton had struggled with ways of constructing a plastic cantilevered chair since the 1950s. When the Panton Chair was finally unveiled in the Danish design journal Mobilia in August 1967, it caused a sensation. Equally memorable was its appearance as a prop in a 1970 issue of Nova, the British fashion magazine, in a fashion shoot entitled “How to undress in front of your husband. Twenty-five years later the magazine Vogue featured a naked Kate Moss draped across this sleek and sexy chair, which continues to represent the ultimate in cool modern design.

The Tulip chair was designed by Finnish born Eero Saarinen in the mid fifties for Knoll, a pioneer of open living. The chair has the smooth lines of modernism and was experimental with materials for its time. The award-winning chair is considered a classic of industrial design and was considered at the time to be “space age for its futuristic use of curves and artificial materials. The design was popularised by its use on the original Star Trek television series (1966-69). The French designer Andre Courreges, considered w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

to have invented the miniskirt, used the chairs as statement art to show off his designs. With playfulness and sophistication in one minimalist design, the Tulip chair is perfect for a modern apartment or to add eclecticism to a more traditional home. Philippe Starck emerged as one of the world’s most famous furniture designers in the 1980s by distilling an everyday product, such as a chair, into a bold form often inspired by cartoon imagery that the public could recognise – and smile at. Best known as the post-modernist prankster who made his name by designing notoriously unstable three-legged chairs, and a lobster-shaped lemon squeezer that sold in tens of thousands yet squirted lemon juice without fail into the eyes of its users, Starck described his

creations as “surrealist or Dada objects” intended to liberate the user “from the humdrum reality of everyday life”. New technologies have transformed the way we lead our lives and designers such as Berlinbased designer Jerszy Seymour has designed a comfortable armchair-cum-chaise longue. The PlayStation Chair combines a soft, circular seat with an upholstered leg rest on which you can rest your legs while watching television, or position a Sony PlayStation console to play a video game. The ultimate in up to the minute design must surely be the Venus Chair, which is constructed from natural crystals that are submerged in a tank full of water. The water allows the crystals to grow while attached to a fibre structure. The shape of the chair then evolves as the crystals multiply. Challenging the way in which the making of objects is reliant on man-made applications and processes, the Venus Chair conforms to the power of nature. 48

Some chairs manage to be purely works of art but Tom Dixon’s Crown Chair treads a fine line between art and design, sculpture and furniture. “If it’s a comfortable chair then I’m a designer,” Dixon once said, “but if it’s an uncomfortable piece of scrap metal, then I’m an artist.” This throne-like chair fulfils the function of a seat, but comes closer to Dixon’s definition of art, because it can be sat upon, but certainly not in comfort. There is no doubt that some of this eclectic mix of chairs has enriched our lives, sometimes for their comfort and design and often because they were just made to push the boundaries of furniture design and make us smile. But in the end what we all want is a comfortable chair to sit in. either at work or when we come home to relax in the evening. However, what you might think is the latest design in chairs may well be based on one of these iconic chairs that not only have made it into furniture history books but will continue to influence what we sit on for years to come.

DINING in style THE DAYS OF BALMY EVENINGS AND AL FRESCO DINING ARE ALMOST A DISTANT MEMORY – NOTES TRISH DYNES – AND WITH COLDER WEATHER AND A BIG FREEZE IN THE ECONOMY MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE DINING AT HOME

Long gone are the days when dining meant dusting off your best china and serving up several courses on a full dinner service. Now we’re more likely to take our cue from a local gastropub and enjoy hearty meals from rustic earthenware or an Asian pick ‘n’ mix banquet from glossy lacquered bowls. Trends in tableware are influenced by fashionable foods and the way in which we eat them. The popularity of foods from around the world means meals are far less likely to be brought ready plated to the table. Large platters and bowls allow everyone to help themselves, a trend that translates well into contemporary social settings such as the gathering of friends and family in the modern kitchen. Sharing is a lot less formal so bountiful plates, bowls and serving dishes are a must to enable everyone to tuck in at will. Big oval platters are great for piling up food to look generous without being messy, as well as a multitude of sizes and shapes to reflect the grazing style of eating, tapas having been the

forerunner of this style for many years. A collection of multi-functional, medium-sized bowls is an essential and a favourite with foodies everywhere; these bowls can be used to serve anything from soups and salads to pasta and puddings, with deeper versions being ideal for casual eating when food is balanced on laps. Mini-saucepans are a popular way of serving individual portions of sauce or vegetables; while using shot glasses and porcelain spoons is a fun way of serving canapés. Not so long ago a matching set of patterned tableware was a must on every table at home, and white plates were either the cheapies or were fine white china gathering dust while waiting for that special occasion. Now the tables of chic eateries everywhere have increased the popularity of simple white serving ware in our own kitchens. A plain white plate can provide a frame for food and chefs are collaborating with tableware companies when they’re developing new products such as Jamie Oliver’s collection for Royal Worcester and the w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Gordon Ramsay range by Royal Doulton. Leaders in this field are designers such as Terrance Conran and Villeroy and Boch. Clean line designs in white are the dinnerware sets that are most favoured at the moment. In a very practical sense of breakage, a broken white piece can be replaced even with a different range. Buying key patterned pieces though, to use with a plain white set, is an excellent way to introduce colour or patterns while still keeping to predominantly white. A way to introduce your personality is by mixing basics with well-loved, vintage hand-medowns or flea-market finds, if you are not keen on all-white dishes. China is also an art and antique pieces from one cup to a whole service regularly come under the hammer. The beautiful designs by Vera Wang are the antiques of the future and as such are collectable and can be bought one at a time. Your home may be conservative and safe but one way to have fun is through cheeky, colourful mugs, collectable teapots and off the wall tea plates to brighten up your kitchen and the plainest of cheese sandwiches. However, modern eating dictates that we don’t need complete dinner services any more and we can be adventurous with a less formal mix-and-match approach. Space and storage limitations make today’s kitchen essentials work harder and, as a result, we are more likely to need flexible items and dishes that can double up. Don’t waste your money on the cups and saucers often included in a complete service if you always drink out of mugs. On the other hand, if you’re a coffee lover, proper espresso cups will be a good investment if they make your morning shot or after dinner cup that much more enjoyable. Glasses can be one of the most expensive parts of a dinnerware set and wine glasses especially can be pricy, particularly if a glass is bought for each type of wine served. Granted, the majority of wine connoisseurs will profess a need for a separate type of glass for red, white and speciality wines, but this is simply not needed if on a tight budget. In most cases a simple globe-shaped glass will suffice for serving most types of wine. Remember that it is easy to add to a glassware collection after the initial items have been purchased. Glass is becoming an increasingly popular form of serving dishes. It is an extremely elegant dinnerware and frequently used for special occasions, it can, however, be expensive so for some the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. As you begin to make plans for entertaining guests, make sure that your priority is always the company and the conversation. After all, it is likely that these are the things people will remember for years to come. Let the setting and the decorating issues take second place. 52

A guide to buying crockery CERAMICS are some of the most widely available and most commonly used forms of crockery. It is a broad term, however, that covers many different types of materials. Fundamentally anything that is made from pottery is deemed to be ceramic; this includes porcelain, earthenware and stoneware. Collectable crockery is generally made of PORCELAIN. Porcelain has a beautiful finish and comes in several grades, some more hardwearing than others. BONE CHINA is a kind of porcelain that is made with animal bone ash – some vegans and vegetarians may be unaware of this. It breaks and chips easily, so keep expensive pieces for display or only occasional use. If you buy an expensive bone-china dinner set, stack pieces with paper in between to prevent scratching when storing. Some kinds are okay for the dishwasher. Maxwell & Williams does a big range of bone china designed for everyday use. Also try Mud Australia 54

for its beautiful porcelain dinnerware. However, you can buy porcelain that is oven, microwave, dishwasher and food safe, with a vitrified finish that becomes smooth with use. STONEWARE is highly versatile crockery fired at extremely high temperatures, which makes it suitable for use in the freezer, oven, microwave and sometimes the stovetop. It’s also nonporous so is perfect for use with liquids. The majority of cheaper crockery is made of EARTHENWARE. It’s not fired at such high temperatures as stoneware, which means it’s not as strong. Some kinds of earthenware crockery are not suitable for the microwave – they’ll actually heat up. If a certain plate or bowl doesn’t say “microwave safe” on the back, don’t use it in the microwave. Earthenware chips, breaks and scratches more easily than stoneware. It’s sometimes not suitable for use in the oven – it could crack. Factor this in when you’re buying crockery because chances are you’ll have to replace it sooner.

Vitrified ceramic crockery is also known as HOTELWARE. It’s designed for stacking and repeated use in the dishwasher and oven. If you are prepared to fork out a little more and will be happy with the one kind of crockery for a long time, this is a good bet. GLASS crockery is made out of tempered glass. Bodum and Pyrex both have a large range. Duralex latte glasses are excellent kitchen basics that last forever. METAL crockery goes in and out of vogue so make sure it’s stainless steel. You can buy cups and plates, but the cheaper ranges as they lose their looks over time. Avoid metallook pieces as the metal coating will soon peel away. MELAMINE is a hardy kind of plastic crockery which is great for picnic sets, travelling and kids. Don’t put GILDED crockery in the microwave, and only put it in the dishwasher if the piece says it’s okay on the back.

10 OF THE BEST “Hotel chic” for the home EVEN THOUGH WE ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO LIVE ON THE COSTA DEL SOL, OR ARE FREQUENT VISITORS TO SPAIN’S SOUTHERN SHORES, WE ALL NEED TO GET AWAY SOMEWHERE NEW FROM TIME TO TIME. DESTINATIONS SUCH AS DUSSELDORF, PARIS, VIENNA OR THE MUCHADVERTISED CITY BREAKS IN EASTERN EUROPE ARE POPULAR BUT POLLY JACKSON RECOMMENDS THAT, BEFORE YOU BOOK YOUR TRIP, YOU CONSIDER SOME OF SPAIN’S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES AND STAY IN ONE OF THE TOP BOUTIQUE OR DESIGN HOTELS

One of the popular

trends in interior design is “hotel chic”. This style is inspired by the décor found in boutique or design hotels that use designers and architects for the best in design. So maybe during your stay at your chosen hotel take some time out to take photos of the wonderful and diverse design ideas created by some of Spain’s top designers.

Barcelona Within the past 25 years, Barcelona has become the headquarters of numerous celebrated architects and designers, each building on and working off the artistic heritage of such masters as Gaudí, Miró, Picasso and Tàpies, ultimately making Barcelona one of the most dynamic and important design capitals. 66

GRANADOS 83 is a modern concept of luxury, mixing flowing space and high technology with creature comforts and Asian art influences. Regarded as a stunning experiment in remixed Neo-classical architecture, the hotel brings highend materials and design to its Old City location. The lobby is built around a central courtyard and has a glass ceiling girded by the original colonnades, now enhanced by steel, red marble, glass and iron. Images are constantly projected onto the walls, giving a sense of constant lowlevel movement. Flooring is black and white stone slabs that provide the visual texture of carpeting, and the motif of light and dark continues elsewhere; while the halls are covered in pale marble and zebrano wood.

Of the 77 guest rooms, several are splitlevel loft-style spaces, using the same materials as the halls. Furnishings are leather sofas and chairs and raw leather inserts on headboards. Further use of marble, steel and glass continues in the guestrooms, enhanced by bare slabs of brick. The bathrooms are an oasis of purity through the extensive use of white Thassos marble. All furnishings are covered in phosphorescent iron plating in order to create visual and tactile consistency. Antiques from the building’s original epoch have been masterfully combined by the interior designer with lushly rough furnishings to create a contemporary but luxurious style for the NERI HOTEL. In the hotel’s elegant restaurant and bar lounge even the vases match the sheer, crinkled silver metallic fabric that serves as a blind in front of arched floor-to-ceiling windows. Gold and silver leaf artworks, rich velvets and iridescent fabrics and the rough grain of quartzite bathrooms are offset by the smooth minimalism of Arne Jacobsen fittings. The silvers, reds, blacks and blues of the Renaissance are emphasised on the first floor, a more neutral colour palette has been chosen for the second floor, and gold and green accents highlight the third. If you fall in love with a piece of furniture at the Neri hotel, you can commission a bespoke piece especially made for your own home. Designer: Cristina Gabás

Madrid Madrid’s modern architecture and design are often enhanced by a touch of the traditional; a good example of this is Phillipe Starck’s Restaurant Teatritz, built into a theatre dating to the 1920s. HOTEL URBAN was designed to display the collection of owner Jordi Clos, a noted art collector and head of an archaeological society. A basement gallery houses a permanent collection of ancient Egyptian artworks, and the guest rooms are furnished with antique Hindu and Chinese pieces, complete with explanatory notes in the manner of a museum program. The interior design in the public spaces has an emphasis on unusual lighting effects such as a glowing alabaster column that descends the height of the atrium to the lobby floor as if a stream of molten rock is being poured. The reception desk is also made from the same luminescent material. Elsewhere six-foot fluorescent tubes line the walls, and globes dangle behind bar countertops, lit from within, again replicating the effect of white-hot stone or metal. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Valencia One of Spain’s most lively cities, Valencia contains a dense monumental heritage including the Llotja de la Seda, a World Heritage Site since 1996, but its landmark is undoubtedly the City of Arts and Sciences, an avant-garde and futuristic museum complex. The HOSPES PALAU DE LA MAR is an immaculately developed and advanced concept and work of prestigious interior designers who have created a welcoming space that surprises and delights. Original features, such as the colossal wooden doors, the impressive stone staircases and polished marble lobby floors offer hints of bygone grandeur. Alicante The city has a number of fine Baroque buildings, among them the Museo de la Asegurada, which is currently being extended by architects Sol Madridejos and Juan Carlos Sancho.

Granada This historic city is dominated by the Alhambra palace and the equally impressive Sierra Nevada mountains. The HOSPES PALACIO DE LOS PATIOS, converted from a late 19th-century palace, is now an urban oasis combining dramatic classical design with stunning modern architecture. The designers have retained the splendour of the original elements such as the grand staircase, while the guest rooms and suites are decorated in vivid, sultry contrasts fusing the city’s Moorish influence with a Spanish-Iberian flavour. Modernist comfort is provided in the heart of the palace as well as a new construction housing 12 rooms plus restaurant and spa. The subterranean area connecting the two structures is ingenuously covered with water tanks, allowing natural light to shimmer through. Interior design: Hospes Design Team

The HOSPES AMÉRIGO has been through a series of previous lives before being refurbished and updated by Elvira Blanco. Parts of the historic façade have been preserved as well as some old stones salvaged from the original convent structure that now form parts of the walls on each floor. The modern light-filled lobby gleams with polished white marble and glass surfaces, but the past is present again in the wrought iron work that surrounds the balcony above it. Guest rooms have been decorated using a warm cosy palette of neutral colours and simple textures. Cordoba This Andalucian city was the birthplace of the Roman philosopher Seneca and later became the capital of a powerful emirate and one of the largest cities in the world back in the 10th century. HOSPES PALACIO DEL BAILIO was built between the 16th and 18th centuries and has been meticulously restored and finely balanced with contemporary design. Original detailing such as wrought-iron balcony railings, terracotta tiles, Moorish decorative elements and a lavishly painted ceiling have been artfully combined with understated modern touches. Rich fabrics and textures in champagne and copper tones are offset by dark walnut wood and light polished marble floors throughout the interiors – solid slabs of local black stone lead to the gardens outside, thus creating a stylistic

bridge from the interior to the exterior. Hospes Palacio del Bailio is composed of several buildings arranged around a total of five patios. The main patio is also the most spectacular as the traditional paving has been replaced with a glass floor, revealing a dramatic perspective on the Roman ruins buried four and a half metres below. The restoration of paintings and frescos from the 19th century is a further example of the care and attention given to the revitalisation of the palace’s past beauty. Sevilla The capital of Andalucía looks back on 2,000 years of history. Its cathedral, built on the former site of the city’s mosque, holds the remains of Christopher Columbus. HOSPES LAS CASAS DEL REY DE BAEZA shows a reserved, sophisticated side of Sevilla, a city made famous by stereotypes of hot-blooded inhabitants and fiery passions. Amalgamating the best elements of Arabic and European design that have influenced the Andalucian capital over centuries, the designers have created a 70

contemporary fusion of past and present. Bright, whitewashed walls blend with the ochres and reds of southern Spain’s bullrings in the hotel’s courtyards, which are shaded by arcaded walkways. Indoors, cool stone flooring and natural tones lead into the 41 guest rooms where a gracious modernity takes over. Dark chocolatecoloured furnishings, sisal mats, over-sized floor cushions and soft lighting take the scene in interiors reminiscent of chic, urban apartments. Interior design: Hospes Design Team

MIRÓHOTEL is located between the Museum of Fine Arts and Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao. The hotel’s façade makes a simple but strong statement – a grid of large windows atop six white columns that create a light-box effect at night. An in-house collection of art and photography juxtaposes old and new works, as do wengéfinished tables and Flexform chairs in the bar. Guest rooms feature the luxury of soothing colour palettes and textures, continuing the beige-and-black scheme of the hotel’s public areas. A novel feature is the curtains, rather than walls, which separate work and living areas, creating a fluid, multifunctional space. The hotel’s Miró bar features long, low-slung lines that suggest a sleek version of modernity while providing Bilbao with a truly chic watering hole. Fashion designer: Antonio Miró

The effect is an artful composition of historic and contemporary design – one which reflects the different centuries in which the buildings were born.

Q

MODERN FIREPLACE OPTIONS

I am revamping my fireplace and want to make it the focal point of my living room. I want it to be ultra modern. Do you have any suggestions? Mathew, 51, Mijas

A

There are some very modern options that we can offer you, but first I would like to know: is your preference heat or only ambience? For efficient heat I suggest a built-in fire as a log burner or gas fire in a very modern design, which is easy to install. If you are open to spending more money, we offer fires with three-sided glass, a tunnel as a room divider and many more. For ambience I suggest elegant stainless steel fire bowls, to place into the existing fireplace. They burn with bioalcohol, a liquid which burns with almost no smell or smoke while giving you heat. Pia from Chimeneas, Fire and Design Tel. 951 275 693 pias-chimeneas.com

Q

FOCUSING ON ACCESSORIES

I have just bought my first apartment and do not have the budget to completely renovate it. I am, instead, going to invest in accessories. Do you have any advice? José, 45, Sotogrande

A

I would suggest that we sit down in our office together with our interior decorator and go through our database of furniture and accessories, working from the top down rather than from bottom up. To have a budget is the best way to start; it gives the interior decorator much more leeway. Obviously, product and pricing play a huge role. Don’t expect to get the best possible product but there are plenty of great ones available with a smaller budget. Thomas Unger from Loft Design Tel. 951 969 179, loftdesign.es

Q

DEALING WITH RED PALM WEEVIL

Is there any way to conserve palms affected by Picudo Rojo?

Michael, 58, El Rosario

A

There are only four species of palm found around Marbella and the Costa, the biggest and the most beautiful of which is fast disappearing. Since autumn 2005 we have lost over 5,000 Canary Island Palms to Picudo Rojo, or the Red Palm Weevil. This fat orange-yellow worm munches away at the “cogollo”, the very heart of the palm, the only place from which the plant regenerates. The damage done, the central leaves of the canopy fold down and break; hence the flat-topped appearance of the stricken palms which have become a sad feature of the Marbella landscape. So voracious is the weevil it can kill a palm in as little as two weeks. Job done, it rolls itself into a cocoon from which it hatches as a pretty orange and black beetle about five centimetres in length. This adult typically searches out a new palm where it lays eggs... which hatch into more fat yellow worms. The cycle of destruction moves on – a large infested palm left untreated produces around 1,000 adult beetles which go on to affect, on average, seven more trees. Picudo Rojo has amplified itself in this way since leaving its origins as far away as Indonesia in

Q

the early 1980s. From there it has eaten its way through south-east Asia, Sri Lanka and the Middle East. It arrived in Spain on a consignment of date palms, imported from northern Africa. Red Palm weevil is a tough, highly adaptable adversary with no natural predators. Laboratory work is ongoing with lasers and biological treatments but, for now, Arbolista undertake straightforward insecticide fumigation on a regular basis. While we offer no guarantees, we have had remarkable success in protecting Canary Palms and controlling the “bicho”. We look after palms from Torremolinos to Tarifa. This year we have not lost a single tree that we have fumigated on a regular basis. Kit Hogg from Arbolista Tel. 600 260 534 / 686 888 409 (Penny)

MOVING AWAY FROM MAGNOLIA

I’m bored with magnolia walls and would like an up-to-the minute makeover.”

Jackie, 23, Puerto Banús

A

White is tight. Inspired by NYC lofts, the architecture found in Ibiza and Greece, the trend is getting back to crisp white walls, using large artwork to contrast, decorate and bring in colour. The other ongoing trend is to use wallpaper on an accent wall and to choose a tone from the wallpaper to paint the remaining walls so they are visually in harmony. Before choosing a wallpaper or paint, keep in mind already existing colours in your home, such as in your soft furnishings (curtains, throw cushions, fabrics) or artwork. By doing this you help prevent colour clash. Take a cushion to your

paint shop, for instance, to see how colours can harmonise. Having said this, colour is all about visually enhancing the space and making it feel right for you. For a long-lasting solution, I suggest you choose from a neutral colour swatch for a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Bring in colour with plants, fabrics, art and accessories which can easily be replaced according to your taste or the season.
