n a changing world over the past year or so one important truth has remained constant: the Costa del Sol is still a highly coveted destination for both expatriates and visitors. The reasons are many – including exceptional climate, first-rate infrastructure and services, and convenient transport links – but a key conclusion can be drawn. In spite of the current economic situation, the local homes and interiors industry is likely to be the first to sprout the green shoots of recovery that an increasing number of market observers are referring to lately. People are still moving to and settling on the Coast and the rental market is starting to show signs of new-found buoyancy – and that is welcome news. In fact, the mood is so positive that Bespoke Media, the Marbella-based publishing company that launched Society Living magazine in May, is also pleased this month to present the first issue of Beautiful Home. Bespoke is committed to providing readers with a magazine, published bi-monthly, that – while offering news about latest style trends around the world – principally focuses on the renowned southern Spanish lifestyle. To that end, the cover for this launch issue was shot in Marbella by CJ Hadlow, featuring a splendidly Baroque chair and organza provided by House Interiors, jewellery by Stephen Webster and a corset by Agent Provocateur – all exquisitely modelled by Nicola McGeorge. Also this issue, Trish Dynes explains how to invigorate our homes in white, reveals ways of creating a superb garden area and gives an in-depth insight into house plants for health and beauty; while the main featured property is the magnificent Admiralty House – considered Gibraltar’s most prestigious property. You will need to choose pieces of furniture that are a slightly different shade of white or if you have mismatched pieces of furniture just paint them white. With a room that is heavily reliant on white, you can play with colour by tossing a few colourful cushions around; citrus orange or turquoise look stunning against a white backdrop. However, there are practical considerations when furnishing with white so consider buying sofas and chairs with removable covers that can be machine-washed so your room will always stay crisp.

chalk white, and that’s just for starters. In fact one British-based paint company boasts 50 shades of white. Using a preponderance of white in your home is a matter of balance and lifestyle. If you have fallen in love with a white room in a glossy magazine think really hard about who will use the room before you try to copy it. Will everyone in your home love white and how soon will it be before your beautiful room is covered in scuffs, stains and mucky paw prints? However, if the children have all grown up and left your colourful nest you can now celebrate with a white on white room that is just for you. If you decide to go ahead be sure to plan every detail; it’s not just a matter of sloshing a few litres of brilliant white paint on the walls, so before you get your painting gear on, buy a few tester pots of different whites and see how they look in natural and artificial light. The precise shade of white is dictated by the undertone. When decorating with fine antiques and rich wood floors, opt for whites that are slightly yellowed. This adds an authentic patina to traditional rooms since the white pigments used prior to the 20th century had a tendency to darken and yellow with age. In an ultra modern space such as an urban loft or apartment, nothing defines the space like a crisp white. Brilliant whites often have a blue undertone which is stunning paired with gun metal silver, icy blue and charcoal; or try adding a shot of black to a white scheme for a chic, edgy look. Romantic whites are grey-based and bring a dreamy, ethereal presence to walls, and work well in both traditional and contemporary interiors. A grey white marries well with any greytoned colour, as well as Wedgwood blue, sage green and a dusky rose. White provides a blank canvas that you can dress up or down according to your preference.

You can change your cushion covers and throws in line with your mood or the seasons and watch your white room change before your eyes. You can place a simple bowl full of water with grey-green stones on a table and see how it stands out. Add texture wherever you can such as grainy woods, tufted rugs, plush throws and woven baskets to make the room snug and inviting. A white background is most often the best way to show off any stunning work of art, whether it’s a painting, photographs, a sculpture or a piece of well-loved furniture. Layering objects and textures creates depth and adds interest; piled up cushions and overlapping picture frames, for example, soften stark tones. Wooden floors look wonderful with white. Window treatments should be cream or white and sheer to let in lots of light; light has a magical way of bouncing around a white room and creating warmth. If you do have a family and pets why not create a timeless white on white bedroom with goose down duvets and pillows covered with broderie anglais covers. Using white in a bedroom can have surprising depth – use several shades of white to bring out the architectural details in your room and layer the space with strong forms in different tones and textures of white and then use some strong contrasts to outline and bring the white into focus. The quality of light will come through your white curtains as the morning sun rises, making a wonderful start to your day. Colour saturates our world and affects our physical and mental well-being. An all-white interior is not the absence of colour; it’s a backdrop against which colour is free to play and reflect, soothing our hearts and calming our minds. 16

State-of-the-art contemporary style… and awe-inspiring views Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson was the most famous inhabitant of Admiralty House in its previous incarnation as a hospital – though unfortunately for him he did not have much opportunity to enjoy the stunning setting. Nelson had been fatally injured in the Battle of Trafalgar, and the HMS Victory was towed to Gibraltar with his body preserved in a barrel of brandy before being returned to England for a state funeral. The bright library benefits from two sash windows and features fitted bleached oak book shelving, two large brass lanterns and exquisite craftsmanship. This leads to a formal dining room, with oak flooring and walls decorated with Wedgwood medallion mouldings in a soft blue and cream. An elegant Adams fireplace in cream inlaid with terracotta-coloured granite has a mirror/concealed television above. A crystal chandelier, which is matched by four wall-mounted crystal chandeliers, is suspended from the ceiling. A hallway, which features a striking wrought iron spiral staircase to the first and second floors, leads to a huge, sunny, square family room which has sandstone flooring and extends through four sets of French doors leading onto the covered terrace – having the effect of bringing the garden area into the room. All walls have been decorated with trompe l’oeil motifs to create the impression of gazing at various Mediterranean landscapes. A contemporary, L-shaped kitchen features dark grey slate flooring and ample fitted cherry wood units with grey granite worktops and a glass-topped central island. The ceiling features intricately carved cornicing gilded with 24-carat platinum and a contemporary style silver and crystal chandelier. Two sash windows flank a set of French doors which open onto a large balcony and give sweeping views across the private swimming pool to the sea. Doors lead to a fully-fitted dressing room with natural light and a bathroom fully tiled in black Zimbabwe marble. It has a wash hand basin set into a marbled tabletop, a large walk-in glass shower unit and a freestanding bath. The fourth, 45 square metre bedroom suite has sandstone flooring, ornate cornicing and ceiling decorations, picked out in 24-carat gold leaf. A plasma TV is recessed into one wall. Three sash windows give sunny views across the courtyard towards Marina Bay and the Spanish coastline. A door leads to a fully-marbled bathroom which is fitted with a wash hand basin set into a marble table top with mirror/concealed television above, a walk-in glass shower unit and a bath. Sash windows give views across the courtyard. The upper floor houses staff quarters consisting of: three double bedrooms, all with

fitted wardrobes and dormer windows giving views across the garden and pool directly to the sea; a large, black marbled bathroom with walkin shower, freestanding bath, wash hand basin, bidet and lavatory; an additional lavatory in black marble; an extensive loft storage area; and a laundry room housing an industrial washing machine and tumble dryer. A fullyequipped security control room with screens showing views from the security cameras strategically positioned throughout the property is also located on this floor. The guest villa is accessed by walking across an attractive courtyard. An en suite marble-tiled shower room has a window onto the courtyard. The mature, south-facing gardens which surround the property are skilfully landscaped with a vast selection of seasonal flowers. The property has a carport for two vehicles with ample open-air parking for more cars. Exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail are the hallmarks of Admiralty House. It has been finished to the highest standard throughout with – not surprisingly – no expense spared. The villa is tiled in a combination of Tuscany Travertine marble, parquet and natural stone; and is fitted with a state-of-the-art Crestron home automation system A central sound system with 68 bespoke speakers enables sound to be transmitted through the cornice details so that there is no need for speaker grilles. Sixteen discreetly placed sub woofers give a “live” sound. Extensive use of plasma screen technology allows televisions to be cleverly concealed in strategically placed wall mirrors in the principal rooms throughout the property. A concealed temperature control system means heat and air-conditioning can be delivered through the cornice details, thus avoiding unsightly units and grilles. There is under-floor heating to ensure a consistent temperature throughout the property. The Spanish Garden garden and Patio Spain has one of the most important gardening legacies, with examples from the Roman age up to today which have affected many international trends. Because many Spanish gardens are hidden behind garden walls layered with stucco or screens of cypresses they are intensely personal affairs and reflect the personality and aesthetics of the gardener. This luxury Andalucian villa, regally situated on top of a hill near Estepona, was bought as a shell in 1997 by a well-known Irish personality on the Costa del Sol. It truly is an aesthetic delight, with nearly every wall adorning beautiful paintings that are eclectic in style and theme. HOUSE PLANTS for health and beauty DURING THE LAST TWO MLLION YEARS PEOPLE EVOLVED IN OPEN SPACES, SETTLING AROUND CLUSTERS OF VEGETATION. AS TRISH DYNES REPORTS, SCIENTISTS THINK THAT PLANTS REMIND US OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE EVOLVED AND MAYBE, ON A SUB-CONSCIOUS LEVEL, PLANTS STILL SIGNIFY WATER, FOOD AND PROTECTION – AND AN INCREASED CHANCE OF SURVIVAL

Research into the

beneficial attributes of plants was first conducted by NASA in the 1970s. NASA scientists discovered that house plants were able to purify polluted air and water. Since then many countries and authorities have developed their own research programmes. In Germany a research programme, funded by the Bavarian state, was started in January 1998, which studied the effect plants have on people who

spend a lot of time indoors. In 1994 CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia’s national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world, found that the indoor environment may be five to seven times more polluted than the exterior. It seems that the result of all this research is that plants are the best natural air filter

there is. The spider plant, the original ‘60s house plant, is perfect as a desktop plant if you are one of the thousands who spend long hours at the computer each day. Other top plants are the Peace Lily, English Ivy, Ficus and Philodendron, which all work during the day to keep pollutants out of the air. For night time the newly fashionable Sansavieria (mother-in-law’s tongue) will breathe in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen to refresh the air as we sleep. To get the benefit from these natural filters you will need at least one large house plant for every 10 square metres of living space. Foliage plants not only have a smaller environmental footprint than manufactured products, but will also produce the additional benefit of removing harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and ammonia from the air, chemicals found in paints, varnishes and some carpets and furniture. They also absorb noise and minimise dust in the home. Plants lower blood pressure, help concentration and improve memory, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety, anger and sadness. House plants not only improve our health and wellbeing: they also transform any room in the home. The choice of plant is obviously a matter of personal choice but generally there are some plants that complement a contemporary scheme and some that suit traditional styles better. Most interior plants, particularly palms, look good in almost any setting. The environment in which you place your plants can be important, but there is a plant for any location provided there is at least a glimmer

of natural light and you place your plants away from radiators and draughts. While most house plants are tolerant of quite a wide range of conditions many will not tolerate too much direct sunlight; nevertheless, some plants such as Beaucarnea (ponytail palm), Yucca and Annas (pineapple) will thrive in a sunny spot. Good plants for darker corners are Philodendron, Blechnum (hard fern) and Epipremnum (devil’s ivy) but there are many more. Think of the plants as an integral part of your living space and decorate the whole room with plants. Many house plants look fabulous when a number of the same variety of plant is grouped geometrically in the same container; this is particularly effective in contemporary designs. Some plants look stunning when one or two are placed singly along a plain wall; chose an architectural species such as Dracaena or a big blousy plant such as Alocasia Portadora – a hybrid with bright green ruffled leaves and graceful stems that can grow to over two metres high. Some house plants, like garden plants, can look stunning when arranged in mixed groups but consider how the colour, size and form of the plants complement each other. While you are happy that your plants will care for you remember to care for them. Lack of humidity is a problem when our homes are closed up. Without moisture in the air the leaves begin to dry, and as they do, the tips turn brown. Soon the margins of the leaves will turn brown and eventually the lower leaves will become yellow and fall. No amount of extra watering will correct the problem of low humidity. Moisture meters can be an effective tool in determining BEAUTIFULHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

Dracaena when your plants need water; just make sure you push the probe down towards the bottom of the pot. One way to provide humidity for your plants is to set your plants on oversized saucers filled with fine gravel; the gravel will also prevent the plant from sitting in the water. Grouping plants together indoors also helps to keep the surrounding air moist; while spraying your plants with a fine mist of water helps to stop them from drying out. Leaves that wilt and curl then become brown and dry are a sure sign of not enough water. Feed your plant with fertiliser in its growing period to boost its minerals – usually six to eight weeks after purchase or re-potting. Potting on to a larger pot in a plant’s growing period is necessary for plants such as ferns. Don’t pot on when the plant is resting as no new roots will grow. Re-potting a plant usually occurs in spring to add fresh potting mixture, but is not necessary for all plants. Monitor your plants for pests and disease and treat them immediately if you spot any problems. Some plants are sensitive to the fluoride and chlorine in tap water. Spider plants and Spathiphyllum (peace lilies) are most commonly affected by fluoride, developing brown leaf tips as a result. Excess salts from fertiliser and water can also cause leaf tips to brown. Occasionally, accumulated salts need to be leached out of the soil. To do this, apply large amounts of water repeatedly, to dissolve the salts and wash them out the bottom of the pot. Plants growing outdoors are washed regularly by rain and feather dusted by the wind. But it’s up to us to clean indoor plants, especially the

hard-working ones – the ones that clean our air. Dust, grease, oil and other airborne particles settle on leaves, making them unattractive and dull-looking. Leaves that are dirty can’t absorb as much sunlight as clean ones. Feng shui (pronounced fung’ shwa’) is the Chinese art of positioning objects based on the principle that arrangement affects the balance of yin and yang and the flow of chi within an area, which can have positive or negative effects, including effects on health. Whether you believe in feng shui or think it’s too fanciful to be true the fact is that for centuries the Chinese have successfully used house plants to create living energy in their homes and workplaces. So why not suspend your disbelief for a while and, as you water your house plant, visualise the plant as strong and healthy and with every drop of water you see it becomes more vibrant. Give a purpose to your house plant. For example, make it responsible for bringing wealth and abundance into your home. As you water the plant, visualise each flower or plant leaf as a €500 note. For the wealth to grow you must care for it so it will grow into a vibrant and healthy plant. Name your house plants and as you personalise them you are more likely to give them more tender loving care. If a child names a plant watch them say hello to it as they pass by. As you watch your plant grow you watch your self esteem grow, and with each new leaf you release your old negative thought patterns and replace them with positive ones.

Light-emitting diodes, or energysaving lights to you and I, are growing in popularity due to their use by famous architects. However, Nicolas Donici saw their potential long before this and decided to become part of Micronetics Inc Ltd, a company which designs and manufactures high-power, high-brightness LED lighting products uniquely marketed to the commercial and industrial main lighting and auxiliary markets. Though British, he has spent the majority of his life between Spain and Switzerland. “My family were originally involved in the music industry,” he explains. “We supplied them to the music industry and still to this day are the biggest supplier of traditional electron valves.”

Eventually he wanted to find his own path and began looking for a different direction. “I wanted to find something that was not perishable, that I wouldn’t need a degree in space science to understand, yet also had a long shelf life and that everybody needs. When it comes down to it, LEDs are basically another electronic component, aren’t they? Instead of giving off sound, they give off light. Therefore it was simply a natural progression for us.” The company now has offices in Switzerland, Bahrain, Qatar, Argentina and Panama, and new representatives in Russia. “We went to China and bought into a group of factories. Each factory has its own speciality. For instance, one is for the emergency lightings, another is for day to day lights, others for street lighting and the last BEAUTIFULHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

advertorial one is for pretty amazing radar sensor lighting. In fact, arriving next week from that particular factory will be lighting for a new car showroom in San Pedro. The building will be illuminated and change colour.” Nicolas has worked on many remarkable projects. In 2005, after the earthquake in Pakistan, they supplied the LED lights to assist the helicopters in landing at night. As LED’s are constantly evolving at an incredible rate, it means they are becoming more accessible to the general public. They represent many advantages over traditional light sources including lower energy consumption (saving between 80 and 95-plus per cent on your lighting bill), longer lifetime (50,000-plus hours), improved robustness, smaller size and faster switching. The light is mostly cool, even during operation, which will save from having to use so much air-conditioning. Finally, most lights and lamps come with a two-year unlimited hours warranty. However, they are relatively more expensive than traditional light sources. So, why did he decide to bring his company to Spain? “The Spanish government said by 2010 everyone will have to change to eco lighting. This means we have a captive audience: either you buy it or you won’t have any light,” he laughs. “It has been harder to convince the Spanish than say the Swiss. They are used to the whole green movement. Electric cars are the norm in Switzerland. However, Spain is changing. For example, Seville requested that all government buildings and hotels reduce their energy consumption by 40 per cent.” Here on the Coast, Micronetics have already worked with Manolo Santana Racquets Club and will soon be putting LEDs on the courts. Other Spanish projects include a hotel in Valencia, a five-star hotel in Madrid and a couple of town hall buildings. “Soon we will set up an office in Marbella employing local staff. We will try to spend as much time as possible here but we can’t neglect my other companies. “Our overall mission is to provide the best lighting solutions to meet all the requirements of our valued customers. To bring long life span and other benefits of LED lighting to general lighting applications, etc. It’s a win win situation for our customers and partners. hat made you decide to get into the lighting industry? It has been in the family for three generations; it’s what I know. Both my mother’s side and my father’s were involved with lighting. That’s how they met. Why did you choose Spain to launch KSR Lighting? We sold the business in the UK and, having a family home here, I realised there was a gap in the market. I saw the opportunity to provide good quality lighting at good prices to the whole of southern Spain. Was it difficult to set up the business here? I already had all the contacts for the products; I just had to find the right location. We ended up turning what was an empty shell at San Pedro polígono into our showroom. The only problem is that we are probably the only lighting store that doesn’t have electricity at the moment. We are running on temporary electricity. What makes KSR different? We import directly from the manufacturers, selling directly to the electrical trade and the general public. By cutting out the middleman we can offer fantastic prices. We also keep our products in

stock; therefore nine times out of 10 you can walk out with your lighting there and then. We are a customer-friendly service and offer next-day delivery anywhere in southern Spain. Most recent jobs in Spain? We just did all of Ocean Club with LED strip lights. For Novelli’s (restaurant) we supplied all the lighting for the outdoor area, restaurant and bar. What is the importance of lighting within a home? Lighting creates the mood, the ambience, and sets the feeling within the home. If you are wanting to relax in your living room, just turn down the lights with your dimmer and you have a totally different setting. Describe the lighting you have chosen for your own home… I have just finished the outside. I used all LEDs to make it more energy efficient. We put an LED strip on the roof of the gazebo to light it, which looks really funky. We also used some green LEDs just to soften it and give it some colour. Then we have white and green highlighting the shrubs and palm trees, bringing out the colour of the plants.

Future trends? Definitely LEDs. As they get brighter and more usable, as in dimmable (we have samples coming) they will replace normal lighting. They are small, cheap… LED is the future, watch this space! Proudest moment? Oh, there have been a few. We lit the first ever Rolls-Royce Phantom up. There was Armani in Harrods, the O2 contract, all the outdoor lighting in Victoria and David Beckham’s place in England. We have also done some work to Roman Abramovich’s place and even sent products to the Queen’s Sandringham house. What is next for KSR We are already focussing on the Middle Eastern and Asian markets. A: Over a bath or shower you must use a minimum of a IP65 down light. This is a weather-proof rating. If you have an open fitting over a bath and say, for example, your child is playing with the shower and flicks it into the down light, water could get in there, set a spark or even cause an electric shock.
