Moving forward with renewed optimism

T

he transition from summer to autumn is traditionally a time for renewal and setting new objectives. This is certainly the case at Bespoke Media – publishers of Beautiful Home and Society Living. The success of the magazines, launched in spring, has prompted us to open wellappointed, and conveniently located, new offices in the La Colonia commercial plaza at the western end of San Pedro de Alcántara. Society Living is now consolidated as the most widely read lifestyle magazine for Englishspeaking expatriates on the Coast; and this latest edition of Beautiful Home builds on the popularity of the launch issue as a veritable bible for home owners wanting to stay abreast of latest trends in decoration and general propertyorientated services.

At the same time, of course, we are well aware of the difficult times facing many businesses. With that in mind, and after conversations with clients and associates, we decided to amend the publishing schedule of Beautiful Home for the next year: we will now publish the magazine on a quarterly basis (Society Living remains monthly). This decision was made primarily to ease clients’ budgetary pressures over the coming year. Unfortunately the home interest market remains seriously affected by the economic downturn but we know advertisers are still keen to maintain their promotions in the local area. To that end, we are already working with clients on creating less intensive schedules over the next few months.

Our personalised marketing support will remain constant throughout the year and we will be printing a further 5,000 copies per issue to ensure the magazine is visible throughout the quarterly period. We will also be able to dedicate even more time to working with clients on new features and sections. In the meantime, we hope you find this issue useful in providing creative ideas and valuable tips for the home. Our cover, once again shot locally by photographer CJ Hadlow, features former Miss Ireland and model Louise Doheny (fashion designer and owner of Starlet) in a stunning El Corte Inglés bedroom – the kind of state-of-the-art furnishings that highlight the Coast’s ongoing position at the forefront of contemporary interior decoration.

CREATIVE HEATING This new design of heater is the perfect accessory for outdoor living – something all of us are doing at this time of year. With the nights now drawing in and slowly cooling down, there comes a time when we need a little heat to keep us warm while enjoying dinner on the terrace or drinks under the stars. Available in different colours and made in a high quality of stainless steel this patio heater, from Pias Chimeneas, is stylish, classic and a little more chic than the usual “mushroom” heaters. Whereas they only give heat from the top downwards, the new design distributes heat in all directions around the glass cylinder and gives light as well as heat – another big advantage for those with only a few outdoor lights. www.pias-chimeneas.com

CONTEMPORARY CREATIONS When the sun is beating down in the middle of the day and it’s too hot to sit indoors then some shade outside is exactly what is needed. The Shade Sail Company offers beautiful and contemporary designs in shade sails that look spectacular. The combination of tension in the sails and the curved design means that little support structure is required and it can be installed into any part of the garden and taken down when not needed. With the triangular sails it is usually best to use two or more to increase the size of the shade. They are made from a new product that is self-cleaning and requires very little maintenance, withstanding winds of 100kph. www.theshadesailcompany.com

Whether you are

decorating and furnishing your first-born’s room or are making a special place for later arrivals, you know that each child is magical and unique. Therefore the rooms you build for them symbolise all your hopes and dreams for them. On a rational level, you know that a perfect room won’t ensure your child a perfect life but, emotionally, it’s a different story. If you have an endless budget, the sky’s the limit. But for most parents today the question is how to provide rooms that nurture and protect your offspring, stimulate them and grow along with them. Children and their special spaces are constantly evolving. One moment they are babies sleeping peacefully in their cosy nurseries and then, as if by magic, they become boisterous children in their vibrant, toy-filled playrooms for several years before changing into sulky adolescents with rooms filled with teenage self-expression. Designing a child’s room can be fun but for a baby and for new parents serenity is the key. Start with a pared-down look and use subdued colours for the walls, floor and major furniture pieces. You may think that once you’ve got the crib, comfy chair and changing table the rest is child’s play – well, think again. Any experienced parent can tell you that babies beyond the newborn stage seem to be able to move farther and faster than you’d think possible. Look for a changing table with one or two open lower shelves that let you grab nappy changing supplies with one hand — and fast. Nursery furniture should be multifunctional and multi-

stage. Good long-term investments include a bassinet that transforms into a toy basket, a crib that turns into a toddler bed or a rocking chair that you can pull into the living room once your rock-a-bye days are done. Focus on providing safe, sturdy furniture and play structures, easily accessible storage, and appealing colours and patterns. The kids will supply the magic of imagination. All children need rest, so storage places or bins to put away toys and crafts when playtime is over help signal the brain it’s time for sleep. Clean lines and basic form-meets-functionality are hallmarks of modern design – and are especially appropriate for an infant’s room, where they form a simple backdrop for the ever-changing array of toys, art and decorative objects that will take up residence as your child grows. When decorating your kid’s bedroom or playroom one element you might want to consider including is a room divider. Unlike room dividers for other rooms in the home, these ones are child-sized and can perform many functions that are both decorative and practical. Room dividers can be used to section off a large room or separate children’s play from their sleeping space. You can use them in a child’s room or in a playroom. Setting up a kid’s room divider in the corner can add interest and can also give you a little extra storage space behind the divider. Just about any colour scheme can work, but it’s usually best to keep colours the clear and cheerful tints such as mint green, yellow and timeless white, combined with a variety of special accents, which can look fresh and w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

15

trend españa delightfully personal. However, if your taste tends toward the lively and modern, a baby’s room in black and white with red accents may be just the ticket. If not, you can provide short-term toys and board books that stimulate your baby just as well and decorate in a way that better suits your style. The use of warm colours is a welcoming baby nursery decorating idea. Kids love warm colours, and even a young baby can recognise red. If you’ve been reluctant to use conventional fire engine red in large doses, consider one of the alternative reds such as coral and cranberry, and other ruby hues that inject a feeling that’s both exciting and cosy. The trick to keeping red manageable is balance. If you opt for red walls, keep the ceiling, floor, furniture and accessories cool and light. White, cream, pale blue and light green add serenity to

16

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

offset red’s stimulation. If you choose red furniture that covers a smaller area of the room, you can easily use warm tints on the walls and floor; yellow, pink, peach or melon continues this warming trend. White wicker furniture has its own woven pattern that contributes subtle interest. What’s more, these wicker furniture pieces will retain their charm long after the baby has outgrown the crib. When a room scheme is based simply on cheerful colour combinations and patterns, tomorrow’s favourite toys and collectibles will fit in as easily as today’s. In fact, since most kids don’t make a clean break from one phase to the next, an easygoing design based on

colour will let several eras and enthusiasms coexist peacefully. Then, fill in with fun, low-cost novelties like beanbag chairs in jellybean colours, funky lamps and dramatically coloured bedding that you won’t mind replacing when a new look comes along in a few years. One of the best things about decorating an older child’s room is that it gives you a chance to open a dialogue with them about who they are. By asking questions and talking to them about what they want their room to look and feel like, you will develop a better understanding of who they are as people. For almost the first decade of life, most children’s best-loved decorating accessory is you. It’s a sad child who is expected to make a fancy toy-filled room take the place of a loving adult’s presence.

trend españa PLAYROOM IDEAS Good playrooms have different areas for different activities. Based on the size and the layout of the room, you may want to include areas for music and dancing, reading, arts and crafts, active play, building and construction, a kitchen set, dressing up or playing with action figures. Having multiple areas of focus will make the room more versatile. But, if you don’t have a lot of space, you can create some flexible areas that can serve more than one purpose, depending on what toy bin or bag is out for play

Storage Shelves and bins are very popular in playrooms because you can group toys and supplies into different bins. One bin for building blocks, one for action figures, one for markers and crayons, etc. Consider storage benches that serve a double purpose. But decide early since storage will be a big part of the design.

Furniture For the most part, a child-sized table and chairs will be the most important furniture needs. Many playrooms also include rocking chairs, a white board and an easel for artwork, as well as some corkboard on the walls for displaying finished projects. Make sure that you have something that will be comfortable for adults, like a rocking chair, love seat or daybed so when you visit or watch a play or puppet show you can enjoy the time you spend there with the kids.

Walls Walls provide a great surface for chalk board painted area of the wall or stick sheets – simply peel off the backing and children have an instant whiteboard on which to write and draw using a dry marker pen. When they have finished they can simply wipe clean with a soft cloth. Murals, posters, decal, the children’s art work and family photos of fun days out will soon fill up bare walls. The latest vinyl murals come in squares with a peel off backing and have thousands of designs to choose from depending on the child’s age. These can be easily peeled off when ready for a change. Children also need shelves or ledges on which they can build Lego, for instance, and then display their handiwork.

Floors Make sure the flooring is easy to clean up and safe for children by planning different zones with wipe-clean flooring for messy play and softer floor coverings for active play and lounging around. Brightly coloured beanbags increase the comfort level

Safety Really do your research and make sure you remember all the child safety considerations that are necessary in making your playroom safe and secure. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Adding an artistic touch Commissioning an

artist to paint a mural in your child’s bedroom or playroom sets the children’s territory apart. A mural is not only a great catalyst for storytelling and imaginative play it is also an original piece of art that will add character to your home. Conrad C Jones designs and paints murals for children, which perfectly reflect their unique interests and personalities. Conrad is originally from Torquay (England) where he studied art and photography; he is now living happily in Marbella where he is a fulltime artist. Your artwork is quite diverse. How did you get into painting for children? I got into the children’s side of things when I was back in the UK. A friend of mine, whose wife had just had their first child, asked if I could paint some characters from Winnie The Pooh in their little boy’s room and it just grew from there. Now I get a lot of my work by recommendations and from interior designers. Which themes and characters are the most popular at the moment? The most popular characters for murals for boys would have to be Jungle Book and Transformers due to the popularity of the films… and for girls, Snow White and Bambi. Parents always like Winnie The Pooh. It often depends on what films Pixar and Disney have out at the time. Incorporating the child’s names into the paintings goes down well. Are you ever asked to incorporate painting the furniture into the theme? Yes, it all depends on how far the clients want me to go. But I try to tie in as much of the room as possible into the mural.

18

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

How much of the chosen design reflects the parents’ preference? Not a lot if the kids get their way. Children tend to know exactly what they want. The parents only seem to be able to get a word in if it’s for a baby’s room. To give the parents and children a better understanding of how the room will look when finished, I always produce sketches of the characters, layout of the mural, etc. What can you tell us about your children’s portraits? I paint them in oil on canvas, in any kind of style from traditional, pop art to expressionist. I usually work from a photograph. Once I have done one portrait for a family I am usually asked to do another when a new baby comes along. One client had her first son painted in an expressionist style and when she had another baby two years later she requested another exactly the same size and portrait style for the new child. She has them either side of her fireplace and now the boys constantly argue over whose portrait is better. Children’s portraits make great presents. If the child grows out of the mural or wants a change, or another child comes along are you asked to paint over it and change the theme? Yes, all the time. Children’s tastes obviously change as they get older. I enjoy seeing the change in the children and how their tastes have changed when I am asked to paint over the old ones and start with the new.

This reformed villa has been turned into a state of the art architectural dream.

This casa located in Cancelada (on the beach of Los Flamingos) needs to be seen to be believed. With a fingerprint scanner at the entrance, four cinema screens and fibre optic lighting, it wouldn’t be out of place in a Mission Impossible movie. I keep thinking any moment now Tom Cruise is going to crash through the window, or something is going to self-destruct when I touch it. Maurizio Sardo, the director of Domosat Home Cinema & Automation Centre, has lived on the Coast for the last 30 years. Three years ago he and his wife, Emma, decided to completely renovate his parents’ old house. “I thought it would be the perfect place to show off my products,” he explained. “I basically wanted to create a demo house. The original villa was only one storey high, so we knocked it down, redesigned it and added a second floor. I have always wanted to do a project like this; it was kind of a trial for me. Over the years I have picked up ideas from different architects and designers that I have worked with and this is a combination of them all.” The couple, though they deny it, are modernists at heart. They have created a seamless mix between a contemporary interior

that respects the simple spaces of the building and their treasured pieces which they have collected over the years. The grand entrance sets the tone for the rest of the house, combining an oriental flavour with modern elements. The highlight is the small moat running along the front of the property filled with carp and terrapins. “My passion is the outdoors,” explains Maurizio. “If I could be outside all the time I would. Lighting and water are very important to me and I wanted the entrance to the house to reflect that.” He then introduces me to Mummy terrapin, who is quite a character, following Mau wherever he goes. “She thinks she is getting food,” comments Emma. “The rest of the fish and turtles have cottoned onto the fact that if they follow her they get food; look how fast she can move,” she adds, laughing. Moments like this show you this is actually a family home and not just a platform to showcase Domosat’s products. “It actually got too much having customers come to the house all the time. This is why we decided to build our new showroom,” says Maurizio. Inside, a floor to ceiling wall fountain bathed in ever changing LED lighting dominates the hallway. The addition of 22

an oversized chair (which the cat sits on), sleek chrome accessories and the classical stain glass window (Emma’s Christmas present) all vie for attention, yet still work in harmony. “The wall fountain adds a bit of a rustic feel,” comments Maurizio. “We have even found fossils in it. What a nightmare it was to get it in here though; we had to use a crane and bring it in through the roof.” A last minute addition was the sunken living room. Originally it was supposed to be all one level. “A lot of things were done at the last minute. Every night I would sit with a huge pile of papers from the architects and start changing things about,” he admits. “I couldn’t make any sense of the drawings and what Mau was doing,” admits Emma. “I would be asking, ‘So where are we?’ I needed to be in the building and shown to understand the changes Mau was making,” she grins. The living room’s custom-made sofa is chic yet welcoming, while the elegant built-in fireplace only enhances the overall appearance. Using the same stone in the living room and outdoor terrace creates a link between the two spaces. inspired living accentuating pivotal features throughout the room. This is all controlled by tiny Vantage keypads on the walls. With Vantage, complex settings involving lighting, music, video, window treatments and temperature are activated with a single touch. Remote access enables you to activate, change or monitor your home and home systems from anywhere. Next door is the Danespan kitchen, where industrial style stainless steel appliances contrast starkly with the organic slate worktops and rough-hewn wooden table. Emma says, “I chose to have the green feature wall. My husband thought that green would never look good in here; I guess he was wrong.” Mau then hands me what I can only describe as a gigantic touch screen remote control fit for the land of giants.

A refreshing, contemporary approach, this living room is boutique chic yet still welcoming. Numerous cushions in contrasting colours add a serene and elegant feel.

Colour takes centre stage in this Danespan kitchen. Emma chose an eyecatching, lime green for the feature wall.

He explains that his company are the official distributors of these AMX control systems. If like me you get fed up with trying to find which of your 10 remote controls will turn on the DVD player then this will solve all those problems. Amx Technology can work anywhere and control any equipment. They can be successfully integrated and automate literally thousands of electronic devices. I’m sold: no more arguing over who lost the switcher; this one is so big you couldn’t lose it if you tried. Taking you to the second floor is a staircase which, like so many of the best designs, stemmed from a startlingly simple idea. The couple wanted the stairs to look like they were hanging, creating something that was a bit different but not too over the top. The top floor is a mind-blowing free-flowing space broken up into various zones by partial Venetian stucco finished walls. Large windows flood the area in light and, with the addition of a concrete ceiling, you are left with a very 24

American loft apartment feel. I love the walkin wardrobe with one-way mirrored glass and the bedroom with its own contemporary fireplace, but the real wow factor has to be the open plan bathroom. I have never seen anything like it. In the centre sits a Teuco hydro massage bathtub which looks out onto the terraced garden. The indoor/outdoor shower, complete with a sauna, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase inspired living. Surrounded by a Zen garden and with views of the sea, you feel at one with nature. “I have never known someone spend as much time in the shower as Mau. Any excuse, cleaning his teeth, washing his hair… he just loves the fact it’s outdoors,” laughs Emma. 26

After checking out the sumptuous indoor pool I head out to the garden. It has been carefully landscaped so that there are plenty of places for the family to relax. The gazebo provides a structured focus, while sparse corners are transformed by chic planters brimming with greenery. But it is at night that the garden really comes alive with a wide spectrum of different lighting effects. “I have always wanted to buy plots of land and build incredible houses like this one,” shares Maurizio. “If I could have my time again that is what I would do. I really enjoyed designing and building this place; it was what I was born to do.” ■ For more information call Domosat on Tel. 952 787 357, or visit www.domosat.com

Celebrities including Céline Dion and Rod Stewart clamour for high-end kitchens such as this architectural kitchen in ivory and black oak. The colour palette evokes a sense of cool luxury with solid black oak flooring and island worktop offset by the contrasting cabinetry finished on ivory and laced with a 200-year-old British Antique Grey glaze.

Clive Christian is in a class of his own. With a passion for the ultra-luxe, every piece is created without reference to cost or trends – ultimate quality and timeless design are paramount. “My father has a very particular view of how he likes his environment to look,” explains Victoria, the face of the brand. “Whether he is in a hotel or at home, he is acutely aware of space, the feel and personality of a room. It was only natural that a man with this level of awareness might turn to design.” He founded the company over 30 years ago and Clive is happy to acknowledge that he was the first designer to put chandeliers into kitchens, which labelled him as “eccentric” in the 1990s. Yet, nowadays this is a coveted signature of a Clive Christian kitchen. He has been described by the commissioning editor of The Sunday Times Style magazine as “someone who has strengthened British brands”, and I wanted to know how Clive’s journey started. Victoria recalls, “He began his career in furniture design and interior architecture out of frustration. In the 1970s he bought a 19th century manor house in Cheshire; it had beautiful structure and architecture externally but the interior design was totally incongruent. What he wanted the interior of his family home to look like didn’t exist and wasn’t available to buy, so he set about creating a harmony between the exterior and the interior and built a factory in the UK that was able to create what he saw in his head. That factory is still there today and still produces every piece of Clive Christian furniture.” His kitchens are credited with revolutionising the way that society viewed “the heart of the home”, not just a functional work space, but a 32

Clive Christian’s daughter is the spokeswoman for the brand… “I have always felt a part of the Clive Christian world; having the privilege to grow up surrounded by these beautiful environments, sitting in front of the fireplace with my father talking about what was coming next and of course knowing many of the people in the company who have been a part of Clive Christian for many, many years.”

perfect accompaniment to the ultimate opulent lifestyle. “In the 1970s, the fashion and the style for interiors was totally opposite to what we know as the Clive Christian design style today,” she comments. “There was no stainless steel, but beautifully carved, elegant lines. A space that was deigned to cater to the functional aspect of cooking and preparing, but also beautiful enough to entertain and spend time in. The cherry on top was the crystal chandelier over the island, totally impractical in a kitchen but a fabulous visual to remind you to enjoy every moment in life, not to ‘save things for a rainy day’. I’m not sure that a Clive Christian kitchen is always used for cooking though. I was at a party in Texas where the caterers almost set the house on fire as they turned on the oven, which was full of delivery menus,” she laughs. Soon clients wanted to extend this look beyond the kitchen; thus Clive created his Architectural Design Style, which formed a seamless flow throughout the home. Combining his architecture, panelling and floor-to-ceiling furniture resulted in the entire room feeling like a work of art. Strong features such as the frieze and the mantel have been enhanced while the elegance and grandeur of the Clive Christian design signature is shown through barrel-backed alcoves which centre the softly-lit glazed dressers and vast black crystal chandeliers. I asked Victoria what inspires her father to create such mesmerising designs. “Great architecture and sculpture. The elegance of the Victorian era and the grandeur of the Regency period with fluted columns and gold leaf w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

detailing, reminiscent of the magnificent Prince Regent himself, who had Regent Street, London, created and built for his debut into society. Mostly he inspires others, certainly myself, to live their best life, to take great pleasure out of the simplest things; a beautiful view, the ocean, a peaceful garden, a great wine, fresh seafood.” As well as being known for his remarkable interiors, Clive also created the world’s most expensive perfume, officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records. “When I was four years old,” Victoria recalls, “my father and I discovered an original bottle from the Crown perfumery between the floor boards of our Victorian family home. Since that day we have both been smitten. Not only did this bottle have a special personal, family significance, it so happened that in 1872 Queen Victoria had given the image of her crown to this company as her mark of approval for the quality and excellence of the house. It was a piece of British history. Twenty years later it came to my father’s attention that the very same perfumery was going out of business and he became the custodian. He restored the original values to the perfumery: pure perfume only in high concentrations for longevity on the skin and 34

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

made from the most precious natural ingredients in very complex formulas. It was my father’s mission to restore luxury to the fragrance world and I believe he has achieved this. The perfumes speak for themselves so if you haven’t tried them – you should!” Such a success was this new venture that he was asked to create a tiara-shaped crystal perfume bottle filled with No.1 The World’s Most Expensive Perfume to be exhibited at the Victoria & Albert museum in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee. He considers this the highlight of his career. I asked Victoria why they had decided on Marbella as a location for one of their prestigious showrooms. “We partner with great people all around the world who understand the Clive Christian philosophy. Usually it so happens that these people are situated in the most glamorous parts of a country, Monte Carlo in Monaco, Beverly Hills in California and Marbella in Spain.” Clive Christian has always aspired to make any product which bears his name the very best in its class, a true reflection of British luxury, and as his daughter so aptly puts it, “He enjoys life and I think it is evident in what he creates. It is a celebration of beauty.”

“My father hasn’t tried to become successful: he has simply created the things that he loves. I would describe his designs as timeless luxury with a respectful lack of regard for convention.”

interior designer to the A-List, not to mention luxury retailer, author. educator and innovator. She is just the kind of inspirational figure our youth of today should be aspiring to replicate, instead of idolising the Wag culture. We should be celebrating successful, glamorous, alpha females like her, a woman who started her career in her teens. “I got my first job when I was 16, which was designing a kitchen for my stepfather’s friend,” she recalls. “It basically involved buying a kitchen and having it fitted. I was paid about £1,500 or so, which seemed like a lot back then. Since then, I have only ever worked in my own business; this has probably resulted in my success.” She was born in Cape Town, South Africa, where her father worked in the fashion industry and her mother was a businesswoman specialising in antique maps of Africa and books. While still a child, she and her family moved to London where she continues to reside. She has been twice divorced. Her first marriage was to restaurateur Graham Corrett, father to her daughter Natasha, now 25. Her second marriage to investment banker Ed Miller brought stepdaughters actress Sienna and fashion designer Savannah Miller into her life. Since then Kelly’s relationships have included footballer Sol Campbell, hairdresser Nicky Clarke and, recently, reports of a liaison with Guy Ritchie. Now with over 25 years in the industry, her name has become synonymous with an aesthetic of simple sophistication and a lulling play of textures. “I love neutrals and think that a home needs to have neutral colours on the walls for tranquillity and calm,” she says of her signature style. “I use a lot of vintage pieces, art and flowers to accessorise and bring life to a room.” Kelly Hoppen Interiors saw a turnover of 18 million pounds last year. While the world has fallen into recession, she shows no signs of slowing down. About 80 per cent of her work is abroad: the Middle East, Russia, Europe and North America. “I have so many projects, which I’ve loved designing, including BA’s first class cabin and Yoo Properties at The Lakes. For BA, taking inspiration from the style and quality of a Rolls-Royce car interior, I used Connolly leather, burr walnut effect, velvet and cashmere-soft fabrics in a colour palette of deep blue, rich red and camel to design the first class cabins.” Her fierce and dedicated work ethic won her the “Oscar” of the design industry, the Andrew Martin Interior Designer of the Year award, in

1996; but she is most noted for her celebrity clients such as Elton John and the Beckhams. I am dying to ask her about working with Victoria. Was she a nightmare? Was she completely controlling or would Kelly even be able to talk to me about it? We all know how celebs like to slap down those confidentiality contracts. Luckily she was happy to share. “It is always a challenge working with celebrity clients… In our initial discussions, she told me she wanted the house done similar to my own place in London. We only had five weeks to transform the Beckhams’ place, so it was a lot of

pressure but it was amazing that we were able to pull it off! Victoria is one of my best friends and I really wanted everything to be perfect.” So was that the highlight of her career? “I’ve had a really amazing career and to this day I love what I do, but receiving an MBE was definitely the most incredible experience of my career – a proud moment. I was thrilled when I heard and it was hard keeping it a secret as I couldn’t tell anyone for days. When I went to meet the Queen in March, it wasn’t actually my first time as I’d met her before, but when I walked up to her to receive my award I felt honoured. The Queen was very pleasant and said I had done well – an incredible moment.” I bet many of you don’t even realise that Kelly has even worked her magic here in our own Puerto Banús: she designed the celebrity jewellery store Stephen Webster. “Marbella is a beautiful place full of tradition and culture. Puerto Banús is a great place to shop,” she 38

comments. “There are many collaborative projects between Stephen and I; our most recent one is his London flagship store on Mount Street. It has been a fantastic experience working with Stephen; he is a genius and one of my closest friends so it was natural for us to work together again on the London store. The design is totally eclectic at Mount Street and different to the Marbella and Hong Kong shops whilst still reflecting Stephen’s personality and rock star chic.“ Many interior designers do not actually practise what they preach. They fill their clients’ homes with a diverse mix of styles all vying for attention while their own abode completely opposes this ideology. I was eager to find out if her home was basked in neutral colours and a juxtaposition of different textures. “I have really enjoyed designing my home in Notting Hill – it was a challenge designing it all in just five months but I’m really happy with the results. There have been many collaborative design projects between Stephen Webster and Kelly Hoppen, the results of which heighten the distinctive brand ambience that Stephen Webster is renowned for: high luxe glamour with a rock and roll edge The Stephen Webster Boutique in Puerto Banús exudes luxury, with his stunning jewellery displayed among blackened coral within floating glass fish tanks; while chain embellished chairs, mother of pearl framed art work and dramatic chandeliers create a truly opulent setting

house is a Georgian townhouse, which I gutted completely. I wanted to make my own mark in the interior. It is now very eclectic; every room has a sliding door with a six-foot vertical handle running from the top to the bottom. I have also used a lot of black wood and neutral colours. On top of this I have gone for concealed lighting wherever possible – with shafts of light coming up from behind walls.” With her over-subscribed design school and successful opulent product range is there anything left for her to conquer? “To carry on doing what I love for as long as possible and hopefully have a TV show in the near future. We have 50 new products out in September from furniture to accessories at Maison et Objet. I have a new range of candles and taps and I’m launching a range of Shutters soon at B&Q and Utterly Shutterly.” It seems nothing can stop this ambitious woman; she proves that the world of design has no boundaries.

KELLY HOPPEN STYLE TIPS ■ Walls should be objects of beauty in their own right. If this involves wallpaper, then so be it! My personal favourite is bold flocked wallpaper. However, just remember that whatever colour or style of wallpaper you use, it must blend well with the ceiling and be neutral. ■ Up-lighters are really popular at the moment because they cast beautiful shadows in the home. People are using fewer lamps and have more “hidden” lighting setting the atmosphere for any occasion. ■ Invest in vintage pieces! Vintage is unique, beautiful and you can always sell it on in the future. It’s a little bit like owning art.

■ You can improve your home simply by re-arranging accessories and moving around furniture, which will result in a whole new look. It is exactly like makeup – have the confidence to try something you’ve never done before and you’ll be really surprised at the difference. ■ A great tip is to use silk flowers; it’s a great money saver instead of buying fresh flowers regularly. ■ Contacts: www.kellyhoppenretail.com www.stephenwebster.com Tel. 952 816 976 w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Small designs SMALLER HOMES OFFER UNIQUE CHALLENGES IN DECORATING BUT – AS TRISH DYNES EXPLAINS – YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE SPACE TO HAVE STYLE: SIMPLICITY AND CLARITY INEVITABLY LEAD TO GOOD DESIGN

Before you start

planning a brand new room or make changes to an existing one, determine if making your room look larger is really the way you want to go. Maybe you want your living room to be comforting and wrap people with warmth when they enter by using soft, snugglysnugly upholstered pieces, dark, warm tones and dramatic lighting. Your tiny corner can become a wonderful private space so don’t be quick to assume bigger is always better –- you might just be creating a problem where none exists. When decorating your small space, always focus on simplicity. Visual unity among decorations enables the room to maintain a sense of class, without becoming cluttered and closed in. The details, furnishings and decorations should be simple and balance each other. One method of balance is to make the surfaces of the room consistent: paint and colour achieves this consistency. Cooler colours such as greens and blues tend to recede from the eye, while warmer colours such as reds and yellows seem to close in a room.

Use colour combinations that refract a lot of light. They don’t have to be pastel colours – - you can use a deep yellow or a rich cream. Paint one wall a deeper colour or, because smaller wall surfaces require smaller budgets, why not treat the room to some beautiful wallpaper? A large print can look fabulous on one wall, even in a limited space, but keep it light and bright and avoid small busy prints. When searching for custom framed art for a small space, one large print is better than many smaller prints. Now traditional rules about scale in a room would lead you to believe a small room needs small scalesmall-scale furniture, but the opposite is true. Using just a few larger scale pieces reduces clutter and gives the eye a smoother trip across the room. Use two love seats rather than one long sofa where everyone sits as if they are in a receiving line. Consider having at least some of the furniture pieces the same colour as the walls. Even the bigger items, such as a chest of drawers, will begin to blend in and widen out the room. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Perspex as a medium for innovative furniture evolved in the 1970’s and is still considered to be stylish and perfect for a small contemporary style room. Many famous designers such as Kartell make Perspex tables, stools and chairs which give the appearance of an open and free space. Another option is to choose a sofa and chairs with open arms and exposed legs; this allows light to filter under the furniture, making the room appear airier. Slim and streamlined pieces, such as armless Parson chairs, are beautiful space savers. Stick to clean lines in furniture that can have dual functions. A table can be used as a desk by day and a dining table by night, or try using one large coffee table that can double as an oriental style low-level dining table. Use an extendable dining table, folding tables and nest of tables, which can be tucked away when you don’t need them. A chest of drawers can hold a TV, and store all your magazines and games. Consider building an open shelf about a foot below the ceiling all around the room, it’s a great storage solution for books and draws the eye up. Don’t let your furniture and accessories block the view into a room and out to open spaces. By moving furniture out and away from walkways, you’ll open up the space and make it feel larger. If

you can see the floor, the room will look larger;, setting your furniture at an angle works because the longest straight line in any room is its diagonal. When you place your furniture at an angle it leads the eye along the longer distance, rather than the shorter wall, and you can use the space behind the piece in the corner to place good looking storage baskets or boxes.

Remember that windows are an extension of the walls and cover a substantial decorating space. If you want the room to look bigger, you have to keep the window treatments as simple as possible. Avoid layering the window treatments and make sure that all the curtains in the room are the same. Another way to make a small room look larger is to make the colour of the window treatments closely match that of the walls. That way, they will blend with the walls instead of causing contrast. Contrast causes your eye to 44

stop, and therefore makes a small space seem even smaller. Blinds are perfect for making a room seem larger because they can be pulled totally clear of the window, which will allow more light to enter the room. However, if you want eyecatching bold print curtains to add a bit of panache to a monochromatic room go for it’s your room but remember to extend the curtain rods beyond the window frames to allow in more light and draw the eye outward. The trick that everyone knows is to use a large mirror or collage of small mirrors across from a window to bounce light around the room, an illusion that enlarges almost any space. You can also use mirrored cabinet doors to make spaces feel large and uncluttered. Avoid single overhead lighting in small spaces as it has a tendency to draw the walls in. Instead, increase the number of light sources, placing them near walls to reflect glow. To avoid glare common in a smaller space, conceal your sources of light creatively with lampshades, directed spotlights or recessed lighting. Changing the lighting can alter the way a

room looks, particularly the dimensions, just as much as changing the colour of the walls. Light all four corners of the room. Use wall washers on a large expanse of light- coloured ceiling. Use uplighters to bounce light onto the ceiling and walls. Create panels of light at one end of the room –- your eye will be pulled along towards it, making the space appear longer. There’s nothing that makes a small space feel cramped more than having too much stuff. With things neatly arranged and out of sight, the space will feel orderly and open. Think about taking a large box and removinge all clutter from the room, and then movee out accessories and cushions. Take a well earned break and then bring things back one at a time and stop when the room looks perfect. The key here is restraint and willpower. So now that you have got rid of your trash to make room for your treasures let the things that are important take centre stage. Remember, it’s not the size of the room – it’s the size of the heart that creates the room that is important. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

BEDROOM TIPS To make use of the space in a small bedroom the main principles apply. However, here are a few extra tips to make your small bedroom a pleasure to be in.

The Walls Minimise pattern: flowers, stripes, plaids and polka dots will seem to swim toward you from a rug, curtains, wallpaper or a bed cover. If the bed is to be in the centre of the room make a feature of the wall or headboard. Consider a shoji screen for the Chinese or Japanese characters on the wall for a super minimalist room. Wallpapering a panel at the head of the bed eliminates the need for a headboard, or hang a simple textile such as some shears, a quilt or a tapestry from a decorative rod. Be sparing with art work or try grouping pictures low on the wall above the bed.

The Bed Be creative: make your bed the ultimate in luxury and the focus of the whole room. Think about having the bed extend from the corner of the room to free up more wall space, Instead of nightstands you can build a table top/nightstand that fits into the corner behind the bed. Consider different styles of bed such as a futon or a Murphy bed that folds into a cupboard so you can have can have more living space during the day, while still having plenty of space to sleep at night. Or maybe a loft bed would be useful for a teenager, with sitting space underneath.

The Storage Ideally the flatter and lower the bed the more spacious the room looks; however, if you want the bed to be the focus of the room choose one with plenty of storage space underneath. Fit the wardrobe with a storage system of drawers, shelves and rods to optimise storage. If you cannot afford built-in storage try putting an old chest of drawers inside the fitted wardrobe to provide extra storage space and keep the bedroom floor clear.

And so to bed NICOLA MCGEORGE TAKES A SNEAKY PEEK AT THREE OF THE COAST’S TOP INTERIOR DESIGNERS’ MOST PRIVATE SPACE – THEIR BEDROOMS THE BEDROOM IS YOUR PERSONAL SANCTUARY, ONE THAT EPITOMISES YOUR TASTE AND STYLE, WHILE SOME SAY IT IS A REFLECTION OF YOUR SOUL. IT IS A SACRED ROOM THAT IS CUSTOMISED TO MAKE YOU RELAX AND UNWIND, WHICH IS WHY WE COULDN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW “THOSE IN THE KNOW” HAD DECORATED THEIR BOUDOIRS

THE KING OF GLAMOUR First up is Jonty Richard Lewis Healey, creative director of Richard Lewis Interiors and renowned for his imaginative and distinctive style. Having revamped his bedroom just in time for our shoot, it would obviously be bang on trend. His monochrome masterpiece, where quality materials have been used throughout, results in a liberating feeling rather than stark. “I was always going to go for black and white, but originally I also wanted to include colour,” he says. “This went out the window. Now if I want colour I just add it with accessories. This way I can change the palette whenever I fancy.” The room has a high-end luxury feel with faux pony skin lampshades, Wenge wooden flooring and the quirky motif wallpaper. “I chose this wallpaper as the design echoes the shape of the large tree outside my window. As for the focal point, well I have always wanted a four-poster bed and now I finally have one,” he grins. Other key pieces are the Rambulle side tables and very masculine dressing table, while the windows are decadently dressed with Yutes

natural fabric voiles, allowing maximum light into the room. I comment on what I feel is Jonty’s trademark large, free-standing mirrors that bounce light around the room; he never hangs them on the wall. He laughs, “I think they look better at that angle. This bedroom contains many of my favourite things. I love shiny chrome; see the champagne cooler and the large urn filled with orchids. I just adore orchids. It’s very hard to get beautiful accessories on the Coast, which is why I have now opened my own shop selling just that.” I had to ask, where had all the Buddhas gone? I could only see one. “Yes, I did have rather a penchant for Buddhas but I think I scared Seb, my partner, with them. He has now got rid of them all. Even the very expensive one that was on the stairs has been relegated to the garden.” In my opinion this room has it all: a perfect balance of indulgence, elegance and calm – the perfect recipe for a good night’s sleep. ■ Tel. 952 89 69 01; www.richardlewisinteriors.com

his decadently dressed bedroom was designed by Bianca Medina, one of the team from Patricia Darch Interiors – Sotogrande’s leading interior decoration company for more than 20 years. Catering for bespoke and pre-designed schemes, they have an expansive showroom just outside the port, carrying exclusive furniture and textile lines from luxury Italian companies and top Spanish designers. With such experience this bedroom was going to be anything but ordinary. “Nature is present throughout the whole apartment,” she explains. “Therefore this was then continued into the master bedroom. The other main inspirations were the powerful elements of light and brightness.” To set off this attribute she played with silver and white, with a slight accent of purple. “The silver tones are picked up in the silk curtains by Christian Fishbacher and the hand-painted wallpaper by Paper’s, whereas the splash of purple comes from the fluid Athenea Diseno painting.” By choosing to

hang this over the white lacquered chest of drawers by Horm, she has created quite a focal point. “The chest is an undulating form, reminiscent of the flowing tide.” She wanted the large Malerba bed with a one-piece headboard in white leather and lacquered noir to occupy the centre of the room. The same company provided the bedside tables and lamps which round off the relaxing ambience. Also featured is a glorious Pierre Frey bedspread in linen, hand-blocked in silver and black. The “Glas” mirror which simulates an accordion is every woman’s best friend. You can see yourself from every angle, so no more walking out the door with your label sticking out of your trousers. Other cutting-edge touches are the Schöbel wall lights and VG New Trend lamp. These are just a few of the many clever details which make this such an extraordinary bedroom. ■ Patricia Darch Interiors Tel: 956 615350 www.interiorsinspain.com

hen you walk into Deborah Harford Corbett’s bedroom you are definitely in for a surprise. Expecting the usual magnolia and tapes with Ikea style furniture I was taken back by this incredible romantic, 18th century styled bedchamber with beautiful painted vaulted ceilings, akin to that of the Sistine Chapel. It is beautiful, poetic even. “Oh, I really don’t like creams and beiges,” she exclaims. “If a client requests it, well of course, but for my own home I prefer colour and lots of wallpaper. If this was England I would have paper on every wall, but I would never try and turn my Spanish villa into a English one.” The whole room was inspired by her Balzarotti Paris bed which she brought over from her home in the UK. The tones were then incorporated into the ceiling mural. “I requested angels and cherubs from the local artist Mathew Brett. He gave me a few different options before I decided on this one. It then took him six weeks to complete.” I bet he really needed a chiropractor after that job.

64

What is really exquisite about this space is that you can see Deborah’s personality in every aspect of it: the eclectic collection of antique photo frames, the black and white photograph of Vivien Leigh (Deborah loves Gone With The Wind) and her ornate perfume bottles. “I am a bit of a hoarder,” she admits. “If something is still in great condition, why not recycle it? In my house in England I had lots of Islay Lace and this was the only room it worked with, so I used it to dress the windows. The dressing table was originally an old ‘40s, kidney-shaped base which I have recovered with some leftover material from the bed.” While the interview is taking place a procession of cats continue to walk in and out. She has 12 in total, all rescued, and they play a big part in her life. As I leave I see one of the tabby cats curled up on the bed, which in truth is fit for a queen. Somebody certainly landed on their feet. ■ Kristina Szekely-Sotheby’s International Realty: Tel: 952 81 01 02; Deborah Harford Corbett: Tel. 658 204 229; deborah@marbella.com

Supplies (available from your local garden centre) Potting compost/sustrato Fertilizer/abono Herb plant/hierba (easy-to-grow plants: thyme, mint, parsley, basil, sage, marjoram, oregano) Container/maceta Spade/pala Step One Drill holes into the bottom of the container and then add a handful of pebbles for drainage. Next fill three-quarters with soil. If you are using seeds follow the planting instructions for the types of herbs you are planting. If you are using already established plants follow replanting instructions. We decided on the latter. Make sure you can see the roots at the bottom of the pot; otherwise they may only last a week or two.

Step Two Make holes, then place the herbs in the potting soil. Start in the centre with tall plants of an upright habit. We decided on coriander (cilantro), chives (cebollino), parsley (perejil) and basil (albahaca). Add top soil and then press firm. Step Three Follow the instructions on the fertilizer bottle and then mix the relevant amount into a watering can. Water plants till the soil is moist. Clip herbs as you need them, and water the basket two or three times a week. Step Four If you want dry herbs spread them in a single layer on trays or hang them in bundles using rubber bands to hold the stems together. Place the herbs in a dark, well-ventilated place until they are completely dry. Store them in the dark in air-tight containers.

arbella is known for its stunning properties but even in such stellar company some homes still manage to stand out. For example, the exotically stylish villa featured here. Located in Reserva de Los Monteros, just a two-minute walk from one of Marbella’s finest and quietest beaches, the villa is well-divided, spacious and directed to the south-east. The ground level comprises an expansive hallway and corridor leading to the living room, dining room, kitchen and one bedroom with bathroom.

An eclectic vision of the diverse pleasures of art

Painting has always

been a part of Cristian Stancu’s life and work. Born in Bucharest in 1967, his interest in painting began when he was just a child: he started his art education at the age of 10. He studied arts at the “Nicolae Tonitza” high school in Bucharest, and gained a bachelor of arts at the Faculty of Plastic Arts in Bucharest, where he eventually ended up teaching painting. The city where he was born is known as the “Little Paris”, due to the architecture of its buildings, its great cultural amenities and its intellectual community, though nowadays these buildings no longer exist and the intellectuals have moved to western Europe or North America. At the University of Bucharest Cristian taught the study of colours and all techniques of painting – oil, acrylic, watercolour, etc. – and pictorial arts such as Venetian, Flemish and Byzantine. He is keen on the Byzantine arts for cultural reasons; and he dominates the strict cannon of this ancestral historic art. The use of gold in his artwork can be seen not only in his icons but also in other media, objects and surfaces. Known for his eclectic style, Cristian does not like to be pigeon-holed. His key quality is versatility: he paints figurative and abstract art, portraits, mural painting, oil on canvas and wood, watercolours, etc. He is a perfectionist and meticulous, with a steady but gentle hand. The artist has been living in Marbella since 2006, having left Rumania to fulfill the increasing demand of commissions elsewhere in Europe. 72

w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

Over the last three years he has been working on mural paintings and decorations with gold-leaf or silver-leaf on walls and ceilings. This style has become especially trendy among the owners of luxury houses where Cristian has worked in Berlin, Paris and Marbella. What was your first painting? I used to paint a lot of horses; I loved painting them. I cannot remember my first painting but I suppose it had to be a horse. You work in various forms of artistic expression... Photography is a hobby for me. I sculpt with earth and with wood but in small dimensions. My stronger dedication is painting. Is there any particular artist who has influenced your work? Or any particular style? El Greco, who started painting Byzantine art. My teacher at university, Vladimir Zamfirescu, gave this advice: “Even with very few materials or colours you can create a great work of art; more is not necessarily better.” My favorite epochs are Renaissance and Impressionism.

What encouraged you to takeup teaching? It was never my goal to become a teacher. I was very talented as a student at university and years later, after gaining my bachelor of arts, I received an invitation from the department of plastic arts in the Faculty of Art in Bucharest to collaborate with them. That was an honour for me that I could not reject. Can art be taught to someone without a natural talent? The theory can be taught, but without talent you cannot “learn” art. What prompted you to develop other decoration works such as mural painting and gold leaf? My wish to express myself in other media. An artist must be complete. What is involved in gold leaf decoration? You need a very good knowledge of the technique and a lot of patience to cover an extension of wall with gold leaves, placing them carefully one by one.

art file

Is it a complicated process? It is indeed very complicated, and overall is a delicate process that means you also have to be physically fit to stand long hours in uncomfortable postures. For example, ceilings are especially difficult.

Gold leaf has started to become especially trendy in Marbella.

And expensive? It depends on the surface and the square metres to cover: a wall, a ceiling, a small object, etc., and the kind of gold – 24 kl, 20 kl, 18 kl. Once it is done it will last forever, and it does not need maintenance. Has it taken off in Marbella? I have done a few houses here in Marbella, but I have worked more in Paris and Berlin. Why did you decide to move to Marbella (in 2006)? I flew to Marbella to do a mural painting in a villa; and later, restoration at the El Calvario church in Marbella. I decided to stay here after receiving various commissions. There were other decoration works at the time in Berlin and Paris but, after finishing them, I always came back to Marbella. My intention is to stay here. What is it you especially like about living in Marbella? The weather, the place, I find it a privilege to live next to the sea and the mountains. Now I speak fluent Spanish but when I first moved here I only spoke English, which was not a problem at all on the Coast. In what special ways does living in Marbella inspire your art? The light of the town stopped me painting with dark colours. How would you define the Marbella art scene? There are talented artists here on the Coast. Unfortunately, nowadays there are no private people or public institutions that invest in art;

they are very conservative and they don’t take any risks, even when the art work is good. The value of art depends on the name of the artist, on his or her popularity, more than the value of the art work itself. Does people’s appreciation of art vary depending on their nationality? No, definitely not. It depends on their education, their cultural background. It is true that in some regions they promote art and people have closer contact to it. But I don’t think it has anything to do with nationality. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

WILL OVERSIZED FURNITURE FIT ON MY TERRACE?

I really want to get one of those big round beds that I have seen at Puente Romano, but I live in a penthouse… Suzie, 33, Marbella

A

We have delivered our beds to some very awkward places, but have always managed to complete the job. We have used furniture lifts to put our beds onto top floor terraces here in Marbella and even in Madrid. These lifts come on a trailer, which can be hired by the hour here in Marbella complete with an operator for approximately €100. We would be happy to arrange this for our clients, and all of our beds can be put in place this way if necessary, so if you want to chill out on the roof it is not a problem for us. HOW DO I GIVE MY EVENING GARDEN PARTY THE WOW FACTOR?

I am having a garden party that will be starting at dusk. I have a pool and large terrace area and want my party to be a real talking point. Emma, 50, Mijas

A

To have an evening garden party it is always nice to have lights and fire. To get a wow effect we recommend: 1. Place one or two of the fire bowls (with bioalcohol ) in the entrance area and provide a feeling of a “burning portal” into the garden. 2. On the terrace/garden, for ambience and for a long cosy night, the Falo patioheater will accompany guests with light and warmth. As you have a pool, floating candles might be a good idea to give some additional atmosphere. Very important: as you are using gas, bio-alcohol and paraffin for burning, there will be no smoke or smell. Eduard, Pias Chimeneas, Fire and Design Tel. 951 275 693 www.pias-chimeneas.com

Q

HOW SHOULD I STORE SHOES?

I have a really expensive shoe collection that would rival Carrie’s in Sex And The City. If I have them on display I am worried about the dust.

Maria, 41, Marbella

A

There are various ways of storing shoes: level shelves, slanted shelves, pull-out shelves, bars, drawers, etc. But when you’re talking about a serious “collection”, meaning lots and lots of shoes, as well as having them on display you do need to take into account the “dust factor”. The first thing that you have to think about is how many pairs you regularly use, and how many are really for long-term storage. The regularly used shoes and purses can be stored in an open area with no door, as you will automatically be cleaning them more often. The long-term storage should be enclosed behind doors, and if you want them on display the doors should be transparent glass. It does not matter if the doors are sliding, bi-folding or hinged doors. If you’re at a large quantity, it is best to have level shelves and place a pair of shoes with one heel facing out and one toe facing out so that

you remember both parts. This also lessens the width used for each pair of shoes, thus getting more shoes into the same space. The shoes should be grouped by heel size: i.e. high-height heels together, medium-height heels together, flats together, etc., and they should be colourcoordinated. The area used for the shoe storage should not be near a radiator or other source of heat as it can damage the leather. Also, if the wardrobe has too high a humidity, you need to provide ventilation and/or anti-humidity bars so that mould does not form on the collection. For a final touch, add lavender sachets to keep things smelling sweet! Amy Thomas Metropolitan Closet Co. Tel. 915 782 001 www.metrocloset.com
