Letter from the editor “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—/ I took the one less traveled by,/ And that has made all the difference.” These lines are from Roberts Frost’s poem entitled “The Road Not Taken.” The speaker in the poem tells us that one day he is traveling through a wood, and he comes upon a fork in the road. He takes a bit of time to decide which road to take, looking down each of them as far as he can see. Eventually, he chooses to venture down the road that looks like few people have journeyed on, as it is “grassy and wanted wear.” Frost concludes his poem with the speaker telling us that he will be recounting his life’s story someday “ages and ages hence,” and he will say that he chose to take the “road less traveled,” and that choice “made all the difference.” Automobiles – the theme for this months’ issue of So6ix. As I contemplated the theme for June, I began thinking about everything related to cars, and I inevitably began musing about roads. We have all heard the cliché: “Life is a journey,” and we have heard numerous metaphors comparing our lives to roads. Robert Frost’s comparison is one of my favorites. If you haven’t read the poem in its entirety, read it! And form you own interpretation. Personally, I love his conclusion. And whether or not you view the speaker in the poem telling others
at the end of his life that he took the road less traveled because he actually believes he did, or that he believes he will recount his life’s story to others as a journey down the less traveled road regardless of whether or not he believes that to be accurate, the message remains the same: Our lives are like roads; each choice we make takes us in a direction that leads us one way and closes the possibilities of the other ways. And each time we have options as to which “road” to take, we shouldn’t choose a particular road simply because that’s what most of the people around us are doing. We should strive to be thoughtful and conscientious about our choices, and make sure we choose something because we believe it to be the best choice for us at the time. Turn the pages, and you’ll find plenty of pictures and information related to automobiles. And as always, we offer interesting and fun articles featuring art, music, fashion, self help, beauty, fitness, health and more. Enjoy your read of the June issue of So6ix!

The Pretty Black Chains
A concoction of the ashes from expired reputable bands has provided for a rebirth of the local talent that was once cherished. Individual strands of success have intertwined and resurrected through the fresh identity of The Pretty Black Chains. Kellen McGugan (Vocals), Derek Knowlton (Guitar/Vocals), Jonathan Martin (Bass/Vocals), and Kurt Freudenberger (Drums/Vocals) have merged independent energies to create the prominent force that has commanded recognition and celebrity stature from peers. The relatively young band does

not have a single infantile characteristic, but rather an attitude of profound professionalism due to their past lives with other groups. Attendance at one of The Pretty Black Chains shows opens a world of nostalgic vintage garage rock, with classic rock subtitles, punk rock liveliness, and a large quantity of pop. Evolution to the sound has added massive guitar riffs, nods to the 60’s, 70’s, and 90’s grunge, yet still retains the original pop-oriented elements that originally defined The Pretty Black Chains. Although the notoriety of The Pretty Black Chains is commendable within itself, the guys have been able to share the stage with nationally known groups such as 311, Smashing Pumpkins, Band of Skulls, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Locally, the band has played at almost every concert venue, bar, and club in the metro area. Festival participations include SXSW in Austin, the Norman Music Festival, DFest in Tulsa, and many more in surrounding states.

What do you know? The famous Galileo Galilei once said, “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.” Nothing could be truer than that statement when it comes to relationships. One of the most common reasons for broken relationships is excessive fighting. People feel misunderstood, neglected, or avoided during arguments and fights with their significant other. These feelings explain the core issue that really needs to be addressed. How well do you really know your partner? Sure, you know the all the things they like, what makes them happy, and their personality when things are going well. But when things are rough, how well do you know them? Do you know the reasons for their fears, stress, worrying, or anger? The truth is that the majority of us don’t take the time to really understand our partner when things aren’t good. We are the first to point the finger, blame others, and get defensive. In counseling, the way you help people is by really understanding how and why a person feels the way they do. The problem is the problem; the person is not. Everyone has reasons for the way they feel, whether they are accurate or not. Their feelings are legitimate; if they weren’t then they wouldn’t be having them. So what can we do in our relationships in order to truly understand our significant other? First, we need to realize that fighting is not a bad thing. Whoever tells you that your relationship is not healthy because you fight too much is wrong. Fighting and arguing can be one of the best ways to really understand someone, their feelings, thoughts, thought patterns, and personality. What makes an expert an expert on a certain topic? Isn’t it because they know the material inside and out? They rarely make any mistakes in the field in which they are an expert. Likewise, we can be experts in our relationships by really taking the TIME to understand and get to know our

partner. This includes fighting and possibly even numerous fights, but as more time and experience goes by, the more knowledge and understanding we have of our partner, which will help us be able to better communicate, treat, and empathize with our significant other. Learning is power, especially in relationships. So what does this require of us? To understand someone, you must first be patient. Don’t be hasty to defend yourself or to point the finger. Second, you need to listen to the other side of the story. This means actually paying attention to what your partner is saying and not thinking about your next response. And thirdly, LEARN from the information they give you. Apply the new understanding you have in the way you deal with your significant other. Understand their feelings, fears, and thought patterns and work with them, not against them. The two of you should be a team in a relationship, and a team knows and understands one another. This means they can read each other and work together to win! So what do you know? Ask yourself that question when problems arise.

In 2010, the Tulsa public schools converted their entire fleet of diesel busses to compressed natural gas vehicles. This change is slated to save the district nearly one million dollars a year. In 2009, then House Speaker Chris Benge authored a bill extending and enlarging tax credits for buying or converting CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles, upping the credit by fifty percent. Oklahoma businessmen who choose to invest in cleanburning fuel stations receive a seventy five percent tax credit. If you buy equipment that allows you to fuel your CNG car at home, you can receive tax credits up to $2,500.00. Benge also wrote the Oklahoma Energy Security Act with the goal of having one public access CNG station at every hundred mile point on our interstate system by 2015. “In Oklahoma,” he said, “we made great progress by pushing a locally available, plentiful and cheaper option in natural gas, which not only helps reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil, but creates jobs and wealth right here in America instead of shipping our money overseas.” There are two ways to convert or “retrofit” a vehicle. One is a dedicated conversion. This means that your car would run on natural gas only. The other option is known as bi-fuel or dual-fuel conversion, and it allows the car to run either on gasoline or from compressed natural gas. in less than six months. The Honda Civic GX CNG is a gorgeous machine. It has a sleek, aerodynamic exterior with a six-sided grille. For around $25,000.00, this vehicle creates nearly zero emissions, is equipped with MP3 playback and all modern media components, and has 16-Valve, 4 cylinder engine. The two-tier instrument panel lets you feel like you’re in your own private cockpit. It sits at the top of the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy’s list of “greenest vehicles.” The rear floor is flat, providing ample cargo room. The GX has a 5-speed automatic transmission and state of the art i-VTEC technology, which give this car a lot of power. Daytime running lights, electronic brake distribution, an internal tire pressure monitoring system, and airbags make this sporty car a very safe bet. You will never have to stop at a regular gas station. The technology used in creating the GX has also allowed Honda to produce a fuel-cell powered electric vehicle, the FCX Clarity. American Honda Motor Company, Inc., has given Oklahoma dealerships the option of selling their CNG powered Honda Civic GX. Take one for a spin here in Oklahoma City at Bob Howard Honda, or check it out on the Magnificent Mile in Norman at Fowler Honda. The only other states given the go-ahead to sell this vehicle retail are Utah, California, and New York. Once again, Oklahoma is ahead of the game.

Honda and Subaru top the charts on the overall consumer report card with Ford coming in with a large gain. When shopping for your new ride, a Honda or Subaru might not be the hottest sports car of choice on the market, but the overall ratings will satisfy the needs of your discerning car connoisseur.

As we progress down the roads of life, and find competition towards reaching our new and future goals, it becomes important and in fact crucial to investigate ways of traveling more effectively. We can take examples from life and use them as metaphors to inspire our thought and innovation. “Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision.” - Ayn Rand Vision, creativity, and imagination are three skills and abilities that will help you achieve some of the most original, potent, and amazing ideas. You must have passion and enjoy what you love. Embrace and focus on what you are pursuing in order to achieve the bigger goals in life. “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing that’s why we recommend it daily.” - Zig Ziglar Goal setting is one of the first vehicles of transport that we have to build ourselves and accelerate our arrival at greatness. We can learn from others that have been there, and through their wisdom and experience, we can build better plans and vehicles ourselves. It is important to realize that change is a constant of life. Because of the

fact that others have achieved great things, they can give us guideposts towards pursuing similar or bigger goals. You must keep in mind the seasons and influences of nature and other forces. A road may change, and if not maintained it can become difficult to travel. The destination can have a different form than it did for someone who arrived at it before you. Have the courage to take the time to consider different perspectives and see the bigger picture. If you stay on one side of a mountain your entire life, how will you ever know what is on the other side? If you never take the time, travel, or do the research, then you may never know. Especially when pursuing something new, there are times we have to take the road alone. As an artist, there are times that I may explain the vision in my mind, but others are not able to see it in their vision until it is completed or I create the images for them. Quality communication can help others envision what you are presenting. However, there are ideas and visions we must have faith in. People will not always see what you see. Faith in your dreams and ideas can itself take you to great heights. Develop a consistency in your work and progress, and people will start to have more faith in you and your ideas. Once your style becomes recognizable, those that were not able to see before may now have an idea or faith in your future endeavors. People often give up before they get their engines started. But just as you have to maintain your car and other vehicles, change the oil, have good tires for proper traction, balance and breaks to avoid obstacles, so should you take a similar care of yourself and your goals. Do pre-maintenance and check-ups regularly. Review your progress, philosophy and results. If something is not working, consider other actions, strategies, methods, and philosophies. It can be very easy at times to reach points that frustrate, overwhelm, and seem to work at breaking you. Some of the greatest inventors, entrepreneurs,

and visionaries in human history are the ones that kept going. What is the strength of your character and abilities? Do you give up as soon as things get difficult? I know many people who cannot deal with conflict; they would rather part ways or give up than work on problems that can simply be misinterpretation or miscommunication. The best teams are those that communicate. I encourage you all to find groups, associations, and organizations that you can become a part of to help you learn and give you a peer group of mentors and motivation. You have skills and abilities that no one else has, and when you take the time to surround yourself with others that compliment your talents, what do you think can happen? Remember that by yourself you can achieve a many things, but with more eyes, experience, and feedback, you can achieve even more. What vehicles of transport do you have? Several weeks ago, I joined an organization called Toastmasters. This is just one of many avenues and choices that you can find in your own life to help you reach greatness. What I like about toastmasters is that they are focused on building a team-based environment that educates and inspires you to learn leadership skills and public speaking. No matter who you are or where you come from, their organization gives you a peer group of people from all aspects of life. One of the first things they do is assign you a mentor to help you as you begin. Shortly after becoming a member, I received two manuals in the mail: one book for competent communication and the other on leadership. Each book has several projects designed to help you build your skills from the beginning level to the more advanced. As you progress, you are able to obtain other manuals for more specific avenues of learning and focus. I could go into more detail, but I encourage you to do your own research. There are many groups and opportunities out there for you to learn about and become a part of that can help you achieve. I am a member of such organizations as The Professional Photographers of America, The World Body Painters Association, Toastmasters In-
ternational and several others. As an artist, photographer, promoter and entrepreneur, these organizations allow me the resources, colleagues, mentors and support groups that help their members learn, educate and improve but also be a part of something bigger than one’s self and help others along the way. Is it easier to start from scratch when you know very little, or is it better to find others that have been there and learned lessons before you? What about those that made mistakes? Can you learn from them? What kind of respect do you earn by helping others and what can that do for your self-esteem? Take the time my friends, do your research and think about what vehicles are out there for you to utilize in pursuit of your goals in life. If the tools you need do not exist, find ways to create them. Not only will you help yourself, you will potentially help others as well.

5 Tips to Get You Started As the economy improves, more and more employees are looking at making job and career changes. In fact, a 2011 Manpower survey puts the number at 84 percent. The Oklahoma City job market is also an interesting place, insulated and protected, making jumping into the job market truly unique. But before you begin searching the classifieds or job boards, consider the following tips before you send your resume off to faraway lands. Clean Up Your Social Profiles. Recruiters and hiring managers are using social media as a form of an online background check or as part of the candidate sourcing process. Remove profanity and questionable pictures from your pages. If your profiles are public, consider posting and sharing relevant industry and job information on your pages, making a positive impression. Create a Home Base on the Internet. Companies have websites online to give consumers a place to go to learn more about their products as well as their company. Consider setting up a website or blog to allow visitors to download your resume or view your portfolio of work. Your website serves as an opportunity to share your story beyond the standard resume and cover letter. Fine Tune Your Marketing Materials. Just like a business, a candidate is marketing a product—themselves. It’s important to make sure your marketing materials make a positive impression, especially in the Oklahoma City marketplace where job seekers are actively looking and finding work. Showcase of 1930’s Art at the Oklahoma Museum of Art It’s June! Kids across the state will finally be breaking loose from the rigor of the school classroom and will soon begin their summer vacations. Many students plan to “veg” on the couch, watch television, play video games, or live for months within the ever-expanding world of Facebook. As much as this break from schoolwork is needed each year, it is important to keep your child’s brain stimulated throughout the sweltering summer months. Or perhaps you have just completed your last final for the semester, and your once-bustling and busy campus now looks like a deserted ghost town. Fortunately for Oklahomans, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art always has planned exhibitions in order to entertain, and more importantly, educate Oklahomans through the complexity and joy of art. This summer, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art is showcasing a collection, which started at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, dating back to the 1930’s. FDR spawned the idea of the Public Works of Art during the Great Depression. The purpose of the project was to help American artists by paying them to paint “American scenes” for public buildings. This would not only embellish the building and add popularity, but it would also support local artists. The majority of the paintings had an “American” theme. Styles were both rural and urban, depicting everything from cityscapes to farming, city folk to hardworking harvesters. The exhibition itself is organized into different categories: American people, city life, leisure, labor, industry, the city, country, and nature. Everything about this exhibition exemplifies the struggles and hardships of the 1930’s. America was still deep in the Great Depression, and FDR was working hard to pull the country out of its financial devastation. The New Deal policy was being enforced, but 10,000 starving

artists still found no work until the Public Works of Art Project began. Soon after the project was enforced, thousands of artists began working again, and Roosevelt’s plan of inspiring the nation through art was beginning to work. Over 15,000 paintings were created in a matter of months, and the artists generated over $1.3 million. Thirty-two of these paintings were even chosen by Roosevelt and the first lady themselves to be displayed at the White House. What is so great about the collection is the variety along with the sense of diversity. Different mediums were used, such as paintings, sculptures, murals, prints, and drawings. And since the collection was derived from many artists, the style changes from piece to piece. Many children just completed a year of learning about American history, probably covering the New Deal specifically in the process. What better way is there to reinforce what they learned and

at the same time spark their continuing interest in history than to show them through art? With the presentation of the New Deal artists at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, students will get to see first-hand the face of the Great Depression and how it affected Americans all over the country, regardless of occupation, status, or environment. The Oklahoma Museum of Art website even has a link to the Smithsonian educational, interactive website, which allows those interested to explore the 1930’s even further. I would suggest taking a look at what the site has to offer before visiting the exhibition. It really helps to allow the viewers to place themselves in the mindset of America at that time. There will also be several lectures related to the exhibition throughout the summer (from June to August). The exhibition begins May 26th and runs until August 21st, so don’t miss it! This is a special and unique treat for the Oklahoma Museum of Art, and it is worth the trip.

Every few decades a royal wedding occurs and it reminds the world how amazing fashion can be. There were so many hats of all colors, shapes, and sizes. This vintage styling can be inspiring to anyone’s wardrobe. So how about going back in time, where your parents and grandparents were considered cool? Yes, we are talking about retro clothes. On the surface retro clothing might seem a bit outdated, however wearing retro clothes is fun and it’s a surefire way of getting noticed. The best thing about retro clothing is that you can mix and match them up the way you like. Retro clothes give you the opportunity to experiment with your looks and come up with something that’s unique and out of the box. Having a hairstyle like Elvis Presley, wearing a party shirt and pair of jeans would definitely bring out a new you, wouldn’t it? Moreover, retro clothing is not so expensive as compared to some of the designer clothes available in the market today, which is why you should give retro clothing a shot! Mixing retro with the current seasons’ trends will certainly guarantee a unique style and personal expression. If you have a look at retro clothes you’ll notice that they mostly contain

Locally, you can shop and try on some great retro clothing at Bohemian Spirit Vintage in Oklahoma City. This is a cool little boutique with some great finds. Another great little treasure is Shop Good on 9th Street in OKC. Every purchase you make there gives back to a charity in some way or another. So when shopping either for yourself or someone special, you can feel good about yourself and your purchase by giving back. Simple Tips for Easy House Cleaning How many times have you found, just days after a deep cleaning, that your house is a mess again? It is incredibly easy to slip from order and cleanliness back into disorganization and grime. This is an especially common problem at this time of year, after the intensity of spring-cleaning is over and regular habits resume. It is discouraging to think that all of your effort and hard work may have been in vain. However, with a few additions to your daily routine, you can make spic-and-span the new household norm. The unfortunate truth is that most clutter is self-inflicted. It is common to get distracted from a small task and set

it down, promising yourself you’ll come back to it later. Or maybe you fix yourself a snack or a meal, and then leave the kitchen askew with the intention of cleaning up “in a bit.” The problem comes when you do these things several times in a row without ever finding the time to return to the original task: before you know it you have a full-fledged mess! An easy way to fight this tendency is to pick up after yourself and clean as you go. If you make sure to only have one small task going at a time, and you tidy up after that task before starting the next one, you will eliminate messes that come from the accumulation of clutter. You will also find that the kitchen is much easier to clean immediately after a mess is made, as food only becomes harder to deal with as it sits. Another tip for easy cleaning is to keep cleaning products accessible. It is much harder to convince yourself to clean something if you have to walk to another room and hunt for your cleaning supplies. If each room has a hidden tote or bucket with the tools necessary to keep it clean, then cleaning the room is a simpler and less intimidating task. That makes it easier to clean frequently without it being a big production. Assigning each room a cleaning day is another way to make cleaning less daunting. If you straighten as you go every day, then each room will only need concentrated attention once a week. If you assign each room a particular day and stick to the schedule, then you will soon have a routine that yields a sparklingly clean house with very little forethought. The key to a consistently clean and tidy house is to make cleaning and straightening a part of your daily routine. If you can come to do these things unthinkingly as you go about your day, you will find that your house stays clean without conscious attention. You’ll spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying your summer, just as you should.

Spreading the sticky, wet Chia slime on top of the porous clay figurines and waiting the few days it took to sprout the first Chia hairs was more exciting than the Space Shuttle launch. You were mesmerized by the power of the tiny, little seeds. When the full Chia “fro” developed, your attention span likely directed you to other interests. As a kid, I admit, my house resembled a Chia Rainforests for a while. For the “weird” kids, who have a penchant for putting things in their mouths that they shouldn’t, Chia was a hazard. There were probably plenty of Emergency Room visits related to Chia. The instructions were pretty clear on the Chia Pet box about not ingesting them. Ironically, the “weird kids” were right about this one. They probably will live longer than the rest of us and have less heart attacks and strokes than the ones of us who follow instructions. It turns out that Chia is one of nature’s best superfoods for health and wellness.

The June Female Professional of the Month is Carey Guthmiller-Cline, business owner, personal trainer, and nutritionist Carey has been in the health and fitness industry for over 15 years. She is currently certified through NASM, ISSA, and NFPA as a fitness instructor, Dance through Pregnancy—pre & post natal, and Yoga/Pilates instructor. In addition to personal training, she has worked as a strength and performance conditioning coach for many dancers and athletes. Carey says that throughout her journey of working as a professional in fitness and health, her biggest joy is working with families and overweight children. Carey’s education includes a Bachelors degree in performing arts with a minor in Anatomy and Kinesiology from Oklahoma City University. Her motto is: “You must create the change you wish to see.” Quality of life is extremely important to Carey, and she believes in encouraging this notion in lives she gets to be a part of. Approximately 5 years ago Carey opened Fitness Together, a nationwide franchise. Their clients train in their own fully-equipped, private training suites with a professionally certified trainer. In addition to the progression of their clients in their individualized 45-minute workout, Carey provides monthly evaluations, custom nutritional menus, and cardiovascular programming. A normal day for Carey includes training, setting up corporate accounts, grocery trips, cooking classes for clients, and even babysitting for her clients children. The June Male Professional of the Month is Rob Stanley, the current Vice President of the David Stanley Auto Group. David Stanley has remained a locally based and family operated company that has evolved into an industry powerhouse. The automotive authority has incorporated the labels of Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GEM, Jeep and Hyundai. Locations extend from Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, Midwest City, Choctaw, Moore, Mustang and Yukon. Traditions embedded with work ethic, professionalism, and dedication to customer service has situated David Stanley above the competition as the premiere dealer in the state, a title that has been held for nearly ten years. Rob started his employment for David Stanley at the early age of thirteen working on the car lot on weekends and during his summer breaks. Increased experience and training allowed Rob to become a car dealer at the age of sixteen, which became the starting point for his professional career. Today his position involves all levels of activity: policy creation, internal operations, external relations, overseeing the various branches involved and many other responsibilities. Being a pinnacle figure for a large entity is a daunting task, yet Rob is able to manage his duties while balancing his family life and social life with proficient ease. Generations of principles have been passed down through the Stanley line, allowing a legacy of notable success to be reigning today. Years of hard work and honest business practices have been accumulated to grow the boy who picked up trash for extra cash on weekends to become the revered Vice President, redefining procedures to best serve his community, employees, and ultimately the customer. In addition to all of his efforts for the business, Rob actively incorporates the David Stanley brand name with local community groups; currently they are sponsoring a baseball team from Moore, OK with their generous donations.
